Background

I have been writing about UK gambling products for more than a decade — first as a freelance contributor to various comparison and review sites, then as the lead reviewer here at SlotMachines. My focus has always been the practical maths of gambling products: which welcome bonuses genuinely return value to players, which operators meet their stated payout speeds, which slot mechanics deserve their reputation, and which do not.

I started writing about gambling products specifically because the existing comparison websites were unreliable. Most ranked by commission rates dressed up as quality scoring. Most quoted RTP figures without checking the operator's on-screen version (which often differs from the slot studio's default). Most had not actually tested the operators they ranked. The point of SlotMachines is to do all that work properly.

Areas of Expertise

  • UK Gambling Commission regulation. I track UKGC consultations, enforcement actions and policy changes. I have written about every major reform: the 2020 credit card ban, the 2021 autoplay restriction, the 2022 bonus buy ban on UK-facing slots, the 2023 10x wagering cap, the 2024 £5 stake cap and the 2025 £2 cap for under-25s.
  • Bonus mathematics. The bonus EV formula used across SlotMachines is my own derivation, refined over years of operator testing. It is a simple model — bonus minus expected loss during wagering — but it produces a fairer comparison than the marketing-led headline-bonus rankings most sites publish.
  • Slot game design. I have played and tested every major slot studio's output: Pragmatic Play, NetEnt, Microgaming, Play'n GO, Big Time Gaming, Nolimit City, Hacksaw Gaming, Push Gaming, Yggdrasil, Red Tiger, Blueprint, Relax Gaming and most independents. Studio design philosophies and recurring mechanics inform my slot reviews.
  • Responsible gambling tooling. I have tested every UKGC-licensed operator's deposit limits, time limits, self-exclusion flow, reality checks and GAMSTOP integration. The quality of responsible gambling tooling varies wildly between operators and influences the trust component of our scoring.

Editorial Principles

  • Personal testing. I do not write about operators I have not personally registered with, deposited at, played at, and withdrawn from.
  • No pay-to-rank. Commission rates have no influence on my scoring. If an operator offers higher commission for higher placement, the answer is no.
  • Transparent methodology. Our scoring methodology is published in full.
  • Open corrections. If I get something wrong, I publish the correction with a date and explanation. Tell me if you spot something.
  • Responsible gambling first. Every page on SlotMachines carries responsible gambling messaging and links to BeGambleAware, GamCare and GAMSTOP. If you ever feel gambling is becoming a problem, please use them.
