What Megaways Is
Megaways is a slot game engine developed by Big Time Gaming (BTG), an Australian studio acquired by Evolution Gaming in 2021. The engine generates a variable number of symbols on each reel for every spin, producing anywhere between 324 and 117,649 ways to win on a standard 6-reel layout.
The first Megaways slot was Dragon Born (2015), but the mechanic broke through with Bonanza (2016) — still one of the most-played Megaways titles in the UK. BTG licenses the engine to other studios, so today Megaways slots exist from Pragmatic Play, Blueprint Gaming, Red Tiger, iSoftBet, Relax Gaming, ReelPlay, and dozens of others. All pay a royalty to BTG and follow the underlying mathematical framework.
How the Mechanic Works
On a standard 5-reel slot, each reel shows three rows of symbols, producing 243 ways to win (3^5 = 243). On a 6-reel Megaways slot, each reel independently shows between 2 and 7 symbols on each spin. The ways to win are calculated by multiplying the symbols on each reel: at maximum (7 symbols on each of 6 reels), this gives 7^6 = 117,649 ways. The variability is what makes the mechanic distinctive — every spin produces a different reel layout and a different number of ways to win.
Many Megaways slots add a cascading reels mechanic on top: winning symbols disappear and new symbols drop in from above, potentially producing further wins on the same spin. Combined with the variable reel structure, this creates the characteristic chaotic energy of a Megaways base game.
Volatility
Megaways slots run high-volatility by design. The variable reel structure produces big swings — long stretches of dead spins punctuated by occasional huge wins, almost always in the bonus round. Bonanza Megaways tops out at 12,000x bet, Sweet Bonanza Megaways at 21,000x bet, Money Train 4 (extreme volatility, not technically Megaways but the same volatility class) at 150,000x bet.
UKGC Restrictions
Many Megaways slots include a "bonus buy" feature in non-UK versions, allowing players to pay 70x–100x bet for instant bonus round entry. UK Megaways slots have these features disabled by UKGC rule, since they were judged to encourage harmful play patterns. You can still trigger the bonus round through normal play. Some Megaways slots are released in modified-RTP "UK-compliant" versions, so verify the displayed RTP on screen before committing to a session.
Recommended Megaways Titles
Start with Bonanza Megaways for the original. Dog House Megaways for a modern Pragmatic take. White Rabbit Megaways for the highest RTP in the category. All are widely available on UK sites — see our Megaways slot sites comparison for where to play.
