Slot Glossary — UK Slot Terms Explained

Every term you will encounter on UK slot sites, explained in plain English. From the basic concepts (RTP, volatility, wagering) to UK-specific regulatory terms (UKGC, GAMSTOP, affordability checks).

Affordability Checks

UKGC-required checks that an operator must run when a player's losses exceed certain thresholds. Designed to identify players who may be gambling beyond their means. Light-touch checks apply at lower thresholds (open-source income data); enhanced checks at higher thresholds (financial documentation). Operators that fail to apply affordability checks face significant UKGC enforcement action.

AML (Anti-Money Laundering)

Legal framework requiring operators to identify, monitor and report suspicious financial activity. UK operators must comply with the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 and UKGC AML rules. AML checks happen at registration, on large deposits, and during withdrawals. AML is why operators may request proof of funds for substantial transactions.

Autoplay

A slot feature that spins the reels automatically for a set number of spins. The UKGC restricted autoplay on UK slot sites in 2021 — the player must press a button before each new spin on UK-facing slots. Effectively, autoplay no longer exists on UKGC-licensed sites in the form it had previously.

Bet Levels

A staking system on some slots where the player chooses both the "coin value" and the "number of coins per line", giving fine-grained stake control. Less common on modern slots which usually offer a simple "stake per spin" slider.

Bonus Buy (Banned in UK)

A feature on some slots that lets the player pay a multiple of the stake (typically 50x to 100x) to enter the bonus round directly, skipping the base game. UKGC banned bonus buys on UK-facing slots in 2022 because they were judged to encourage harmful play patterns. The feature still exists on slots offered in other jurisdictions.

Bonus EV (Expected Value)

The genuine retained value of a slot bonus after the wagering requirement is accounted for. Calculated using the formula: EV = Bonus − (Wagering × Bonus × 4% house edge). A £100 bonus at 10x wagering has £60 EV; a £100 bonus at 35x has approximately zero EV. Bonus EV is the single most useful metric for comparing welcome offers.

Bonus Round

A separate game-within-the-game on a slot, usually triggered by a combination of scatter symbols. Bonus rounds typically include free spins, multipliers, sticky wilds or other features that raise the win potential above the base game. On high-volatility slots, the bonus round usually accounts for more than half the slot's total RTP.

Cascading Reels (Avalanche)

A slot mechanic where winning symbols are removed from the reels and replaced by new symbols dropping in from above, potentially creating new wins on the same spin. The mechanic was pioneered by NetEnt's Gonzo's Quest in 2011 and has since been used on dozens of major slots including most Megaways titles.

Cluster Pays

A win-evaluation system where matching symbols pay when they touch each other in a connected cluster, rather than along a defined payline. Used on slots like Aloha! Cluster Pays (NetEnt) and Reactoonz (Play'n GO). Cluster Pays slots typically pair the mechanic with cascading reels.

Coin Value

On bet-level slots, the value of each "coin" used to stake. Multiplied by the number of coins per line and the number of active lines to produce the total stake per spin. Less common on modern slots.

Expanding Wild

A wild symbol that grows to fill an entire reel when it lands, increasing win potential significantly. A defining feature of Book of Dead and similar Egyptian-themed slots.

Free Spins

Spins of a slot at no stake to the player. Can be a bonus round triggered inside a slot, or a promotional offer from an operator (typically 10–25 spins at £0.10 each on registration or deposit). Free spins outcomes follow the same RNG and RTP as paid spins.

GAMSTOP

The UK national online self-exclusion scheme. Free to use. Players register at gamstop.co.uk and select a self-exclusion period (6 months, 1 year or 5 years). Once active, GAMSTOP blocks the player from registering or logging in at every UKGC-licensed gambling site simultaneously. The exclusion cannot be reversed during the chosen term.

Hit Frequency

The percentage of spins on a slot that result in a win of any size. A 25% hit frequency means one in four spins wins something (often less than the stake). Hit frequency is independent of RTP — a high-hit-frequency slot can have low RTP if most wins are small.

Jackpot (Progressive vs Fixed)

A large prize pool funded by player stakes (progressive jackpots) or paid as a fixed top prize (fixed jackpots). Progressive jackpots grow until won — Mega Moolah's record stands at €18.9 million. Fixed jackpots pay a set amount regardless of when triggered. Slots funding progressive jackpots have lower base RTP because some stake contributes to the jackpot pool.

KYC (Know Your Customer)

The process of verifying a player's identity and address. UKGC-licensed operators must complete KYC before crediting any gambling product — including no-deposit bonuses. KYC typically requires a photo of ID (passport or driving licence) and a proof of address (recent utility bill or bank statement). Most operators complete KYC in minutes; complex cases can take 24–48 hours.

Maximum Bet (Per Spin)

The largest stake allowed per slot spin. UKGC sets a £5 per-spin cap for players aged 25 and over, and a £2 per-spin cap for players aged 18–24 (from February 2025). The age-banded caps reflect UKGC research showing slots-related harm concentrates in younger cohorts. Operators verify age at registration and apply the relevant cap automatically.

Maximum Cashout

The maximum amount a player can withdraw from a bonus. Common on no-deposit bonuses (typically £20–£50 cashout cap) and some deposit bonuses. Wins above the cap are forfeited at withdrawal. Always check the bonus T&Cs for a max cashout figure before claiming.

Megaways

A slot game engine that produces a variable number of symbols on each reel for every spin, generating anywhere between 324 and 117,649 ways to win on the standard 6-reel layout. Created by Big Time Gaming (BTG) and licensed to dozens of other studios. Megaways slots are almost always high or extreme volatility.

Multiplier

A value that multiplies a win amount. Multipliers can apply per-spin (2x, 3x, 5x), to specific symbols, to the bonus round overall, or progressively (rising with each consecutive win on cascading reels). The largest single-spin wins in slot history have come from compound multipliers in bonus rounds.

Paylines

The patterns across the reels that must contain matching symbols for a win to register. Classic slots have a single payline (middle row); modern slots commonly have 10, 20, 25 or 243 ways. Megaways slots have variable ways instead of fixed paylines.

Reels

The vertical columns of symbols on a slot. Classic three-reel slots have three reels; modern video slots typically have five reels. Megaways slots commonly have six reels with a variable height each.

RNG (Random Number Generator)

The software that produces slot outcomes. UKGC-licensed slot RNGs must be independently certified by labs such as eCOGRA, GLI or iTech Labs. RNGs produce statistically random, unpredictable outcomes that cannot be influenced by recent history, the player's identity, or external factors. Each spin's outcome is independent of every previous spin.

RTP (Return to Player)

The percentage of total wagers a slot is mathematically configured to return to players over its lifetime. A 96% RTP slot returns 96p per £1 wagered, on average, across millions of spins. RTP and house edge sum to 100% — a 96% RTP slot has a 4% house edge. RTP says nothing about individual session outcomes.

Scatter Symbol

A symbol that pays out anywhere on the reels regardless of payline alignment, and usually triggers the bonus round when enough scatters land in a single spin (commonly 3+). Scatter wins are calculated separately from line wins.

Sticky Wild

A wild symbol that remains in place on the reels for multiple spins, usually during a free spins bonus round. Sticky wilds dramatically increase win potential because they multiply the chance of subsequent paying combinations.

UKGC (UK Gambling Commission)

The statutory regulator of gambling in Great Britain. Established under the Gambling Act 2005, the UKGC licenses every gambling operator that takes bets from British consumers. UKGC rules include: 10x maximum bonus wagering, £5 maximum slot stake (£2 for 18–24s), mandatory affordability checks, segregated player funds, certified RNG, GAMSTOP compliance, and no autoplay on UK slots. Every operator we list holds a current UKGC licence — verify on the UKGC public register.

Volatility (Variance)

How a slot distributes its RTP through wins. Low-volatility slots return small wins frequently; high-volatility slots return rare large wins separated by long dry stretches. Volatility and RTP are independent — a 96% RTP low-volatility slot and a 96% RTP extreme-volatility slot have the same long-run return, distributed completely differently.

Wagering Requirement

The amount a player must bet through an operator before bonus winnings can be withdrawn, expressed as a multiple of the bonus. 10x on a £50 bonus = £500 in cumulative wagers. UKGC caps wagering at 10x for UK-licensed sites since April 2023. Wagering requirements above 10x are non-compliant on UK sites.

Wild Symbol

A symbol that substitutes for any other paying symbol on a slot, except (usually) scatters. Wilds increase win frequency and value. Variants include expanding wilds, sticky wilds, walking wilds and multiplier wilds.
