The effect on RTP

If a progressive machine returns 94% and four points of that is jackpot contribution, the game you actually play returns about 90% unless the jackpot lands.

How a jackpot is triggered

Usually at random, sometimes through a bonus wheel or by collecting symbols. On most progressives a larger stake gives a proportionally better chance, so the cost per chance is the same whatever you stake.

Seed and reset

After a win the pot resets to a seed amount funded by the operator or developer, then climbs again. A pot far above its usual level is better value than one just reset, though still a long shot.
