The random number generator
The part of a slot machine that decides everything.
Key takeaways
- Runs continuously.
- Your press picks the number.
- Each spin is independent.
- Tested before release in Britain.
In shortA random number generator produces numbers constantly. When you press spin, the machine takes the number at that instant and maps it to where each reel stops.
What happens when you press spin
- The generator is already producing thousands of numbers a second.
- Your press captures the current ones, one per reel.
- Each number is mapped to a stop position on that reel.
- The reels animate to those positions.
- The paytable is checked and any win is paid.
What follows from that
- The result is fixed the moment you press; the spinning is theatre.
- No spin knows about the last one.
- Stopping the reels early changes nothing.
- Time of day, stake size and how long you have played change nothing.
Testing
Slot machines offered online in Britain must be tested by an approved test house, and operators must monitor live games against their expected return.
Before the RNG
Mechanical machines relied on the physical reels: the odds were the number of symbols on each strip. The electronic RNG arrived with video machines and let designers set odds independently of what the reels appear to show.

Pseudo-random, and why that is fine
A slot machine's generator is an algorithm, so strictly its output is pseudo-random: a sequence produced from a starting value. It runs so fast, and is sampled at such an unpredictable instant, that the result is unpredictable in practice. Test houses check the output statistically across millions of spins.
Near misses
Two jackpot symbols on the line and a third just above it is an ordinary losing spin. The reels do not "almost" stop anywhere; each was given its position independently.
