Line bet or total bet
A symbol paying "500" on a ten-line machine at a 10p total bet pays 500 times the 1p line bet: £5, which is 50 times the stake. The same "500" as a total-bet multiple would be £50. The paytable says which.
On old machines
The paytable was printed on the glass above the reels, which is why the top panel of a slot machine is still called the glass.

What the other pages hold
Beyond symbol values, an online paytable usually has a page for each feature, a diagram of the paylines or an explanation of ways, the minimum and maximum stake, the maximum win, and a line on what happens if a game is interrupted. The RTP is often on the last page.
Dynamic paytables
Many machines update the paytable as you change the stake, showing prizes in pounds. That makes the top prize at your chosen stake easy to see.
