On slots vs roulette odds, single-zero European roulette usually costs less per pound staked: every standard bet carries a 2.70% house edge, while most online slots list RTPs of 94% to 97%, a house edge of roughly 3% to 6%. Speed, bet choice and the specific slot change the picture, and both games lose money over time.
European roulette: 37 pockets, 2.70% house edge on every standard bet (97.30% RTP).
American roulette: 38 pockets, 5.26% house edge; avoid it if a single-zero wheel is available.
Slots vary by game: Blood Suckers lists 98.00%, Starburst 96.09%, Mega Moolah 88.12% before its jackpot.
Speed matters as much as edge: UK online slots can run every 2.5 seconds, other online casino games every 5 seconds.

Slots vs roulette odds: which costs less?
Measured by house edge, single-zero roulette beats most slots. A European wheel has 37 pockets, numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero, and pays as if there were 36. That gap gives the house 1/37 of every stake on average, which is 2.70%. A slot’s edge is 100% minus its RTP, and most well-known online slots list between about 94% and 97%, so their edge is roughly 3% to 6%.
But odds are only part of the cost. How fast you play, how much each bet is and whether you choose a high-variance bet or game all shape what a session costs and how it feels. The sections below take each in turn, with pound figures.

Roulette odds: every bet has the same edge
On a single-zero wheel every standard bet has the same 2.70% house edge, however you spread your chips. The payout is always slightly less than true odds would require. A straight-up bet on one number wins 1 time in 37 but pays 35 to 1; true odds would be 36 to 1. Wizard of Odds’ roulette guide (opens in a new tab) sets out the same figures for every bet type.

American wheels add a double zero, giving 38 pockets with the same payouts. The edge rises to 2/38, or 5.26%, and the five-number bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 is worse at 7.89%. Some single-zero tables in French style return half of an even-money stake when zero lands, which halves the edge on those bets to 1.35%; check the table rules to see if this applies.
Slot odds: why every game is different
A slot doesn’t show its odds on the layout the way a roulette table does. The chance of each result is buried in reel strips and weights run by a random number generator, and the paytable doesn’t tell you how often each line lands. What you can see is the RTP, which UK-licensed games must make available before you play. That single figure tells you the long-run edge.

So a few slots, such as Blood Suckers, have a lower edge than European roulette on paper, and progressive jackpot games such as Mega Moolah are far higher in the base game. Many slots also come in several RTP versions, and the casino chooses which one to run. Our list of high RTP slot machines and the question which slots have the best odds go further.
Speed: the hidden factor in slots vs roulette
Average cost = stake × number of games × house edge. The house edge is only one part; the number of games per hour is the other. Under the Commission’s RTS 14 responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab), online slots must take at least 2.5 seconds per spin (since 31 October 2021) and other online casino games, including RNG roulette, at least 5 seconds per game cycle (since 17 January 2025). Live dealer roulette runs slower still, because a real wheel has to spin and settle.

The pace rows are assumptions, not measured averages, but the lesson is solid: a slow game with a 2.70% edge costs far less per hour than a fast one at 4%. Our slot cost per hour page and the spin speed rule explain the slot side in more detail.
Volatility: you choose it on roulette, the developer chooses it on slots
Roulette lets you set your own risk. Even-money bets win nearly half the time and pay 1 to 1, so a balance moves slowly. A straight-up bet wins 1 time in 37 and pays 35 to 1, so long losing runs are normal. The edge is 2.70% either way. On a slot, the volatility is built in. Starburst is low volatility with a 500× ceiling; Dead or Alive 2 is high volatility with a 111,111× ceiling. You can change your stake, not the shape of the game.
That difference cuts both ways. Roulette can’t pay more than 35 times a single bet on one spin, while slots can pay thousands of times the stake, which is why many players accept a higher edge. The cost of that ceiling is the long run of small or no returns that high-volatility slots produce.
UK rules for slots and roulette compared
The online stake limits apply only to slots. The Gambling Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sets £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over (from 9 April 2025) and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds (from 21 May 2025), and states that other casino games such as roulette are not covered. Roulette tables have their own minimum and maximum bets set by the casino. Autoplay is banned on online slots since 31 October 2021 and on all online casino games since 17 January 2025, and both must show your net position and time played.
In betting shops, roulette-style content often runs on Category B2 machines, the terminals once known as FOBTs. Their maximum stake was cut from £100 to £2 on 1 April 2019, with a £500 maximum prize. The Category B2 FOBT rules page and the betting shop machines guide cover that side.

Myths that apply to both slots and roulette
‘Red has come up six times, so black is due.’ Each spin of a wheel and each slot spin is independent. This is the gambler’s fallacy.
‘Doubling after a loss guarantees a profit.’ Doubling systems don’t change the 2.70% edge; they trade many small wins for occasional very large losses, and table limits stop the sequence.
‘A slot that hasn’t paid is loose now.’ Online slots don’t track your losses, and the RNG doesn’t compensate; see loose and tight slot machines.
‘Roulette is a skill game.’ Bet choice changes the variance, not the edge. Neither game can be beaten over time.
A £20 budget on slots vs roulette
Decide the stake. At £1 a game, £20 covers 20 roulette bets or 20 slot spins; at 20p, 100 slot spins.
Work out the average cost: 20 even-money roulette bets at £1 cost 54p on average (£20 × 2.70%); 100 slot spins at 20p on a 96% game cost 80p.
Consider the spread: even-money roulette moves £1 at a time, while a high-volatility slot can return nothing for 100 spins or a large win.
Set the time: the slot spins can be over in a few minutes online, so plan breaks or use a reality check.
Stop at the budget, win or lose. Our bankroll guide explains how to set one.
Slots or roulette: verdict by type of player
Advantages
Roulette: a fixed, published 2.70% edge on single-zero wheels.
Roulette: you choose the risk level with each bet.
Slots: a few games have edges below roulette’s 2.70%.
Slots: far higher top prizes, plus free demo play after age verification.
Drawbacks
Roulette: top payout capped at 35 to 1; American wheels nearly double the edge.
Roulette: no UK online stake cap, so table limits and your own limits matter more.
Slots: many games have edges of 4% or more, and progressives much higher in the base game.
Slots: fast spins mean more stakes per hour, so the hourly cost can be higher.
If you want the lowest edge and a slow pace, single-zero roulette on even-money bets is the cheaper entertainment per hour. If the chance of a large win matters, slots offer ceilings roulette can’t match, at a higher cost; pick a high-RTP title and a modest stake. If you play both, compare them by cost per hour rather than by edge alone. More matchups are on the compare hub, and the guide to slot machine odds goes deeper on slot maths.

Frequently asked questions
Do slots or roulette have better odds?
Single-zero European roulette usually has better odds than slots, with a 2.70% house edge on every standard bet. Most online slots list RTPs of 94% to 97%, an edge of about 3% to 6%. A few slots beat roulette on paper, such as Blood Suckers at 98.00%, while American roulette at 5.26% is worse than many slots. Compare the actual figures; our guide on slot machine odds explains how.
What is the house edge on roulette?
On a single-zero European wheel it is 2.70% on every standard bet, because the 37 pockets pay as if there were 36. On an American double-zero wheel it is 5.26%, and the five-number bet is 7.89%. Some French-style tables return half an even-money stake when zero lands, cutting that bet’s edge to 1.35%. For slots, the equivalent figure is 100% minus the RTP; see our house edge explainer.
Is roulette cheaper to play than slots?
Per pound staked, single-zero roulette usually is. Per hour, it depends on pace and stake. At £1 a game at the fastest UK online pace, a 96% slot averages £57.60 an hour and RNG roulette £19.44, because slots can spin every 2.5 seconds and roulette runs at least 5 seconds per game. Play slower and both fall. The sums are laid out in how much a slot costs per hour.
Do the UK stake limits apply to roulette?
No. The £5 per spin limit for over-25s and £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds apply only to online slots, which the Commission defines as reel-based casino games. Roulette, blackjack and other casino games are not covered, so their limits are set by the casino’s table rules. Your own deposit limit still applies across everything. In betting shops, roulette on B2 machines is capped at £2 a game. See online slot stake limits.
Which slots have better odds than roulette?
Only slots with an RTP above 97.30% beat single-zero roulette on house edge. Blood Suckers lists 98.00%, and Mega Joker lists up to 99% in its Supermeter mode at the top stake. Most popular slots, including Starburst (96.09%) and Book of Dead (96.21%), sit below roulette. Casinos can run lower RTP versions, so confirm the figure in the help screen. Our list of high RTP slot machines has more.
Can a betting system beat roulette or slots?
No. Systems such as doubling after a loss change how wins and losses are spread, not the house edge. On roulette you face 2.70% on every bet regardless of sequence, and table limits eventually block a doubling run. On slots every spin is independent and the RNG doesn’t respond to your history. Treat both as paid entertainment. Our page on how to win on slot machines explains what you can and can’t influence.
Why do slots have a higher house edge than roulette?
Partly because they offer much bigger prizes. A slot’s paytable funds rare wins of thousands of times the stake, plus bonus features, and the developer sets the RTP to cover that. Roulette’s top payout is 35 to 1, and its edge comes only from the zero pockets. Many slots also come in several RTP versions, and the casino picks one. Our RTP explainer covers how the figure is set and checked.
Is roulette on a betting shop machine the same as online roulette?
The maths of a single-zero wheel is the same, but the rules differ. Betting shop terminals are Category B2 machines, capped at a £2 maximum stake since 1 April 2019 and a £500 maximum prize. Online roulette has no legal stake cap, but must take at least 5 seconds per game since 17 January 2025 and cannot offer autoplay. The land-based rules are on our betting shop machines page.
Are online roulette and slots random?
Yes. UK-licensed online slots and RNG roulette must use certified random number generators, and online games may not adjust outcomes to reach a target return. Each spin is independent, so past results don’t make any number or symbol more likely. Live dealer roulette uses a physical wheel. Independent test houses check the games before release. See are slot machines rigged for how testing works.
Which is better for a small budget, slots or roulette?
For making a small budget last, even-money bets on single-zero roulette at a slow pace usually cost the least. A £20 budget as 20 £1 red or black bets costs 54p on average. Slots can match that only at low stakes and with a high RTP: 100 spins at 20p on a 96% game cost 80p on average. Whatever you play, decide the budget first. Our guide to the best slots for small budgets has more ideas.
