What the Tower Quest slot is in one paragraph

Tower Quest is a sword-and-sorcery video slot from Play'n GO, released in 2015. It runs on a standard five-reel, three-row grid with 20 lines that are always active. The top prize is capped at 500 times the stake, and the volatility is medium, so it's built for a steady stream of modest results rather than rare, enormous ones.

How the Tower Quest slot machine works

Each spin follows the same order. Nothing you do once the reels are moving changes the outcome, because it has already been picked.

  1. Choose a stake. All 20 paylines are fixed, so the stake covers them all.
  2. Press spin. The random number generator selects where each reel stops.
  3. The reels spin for at least 2.5 seconds, the UK minimum.
  4. Lines with three or more matching symbols from the leftmost reel pay, with the tower wild substituting where needed.
  5. Bonus scatters, if enough land, take you into the bonus game or the free spins.

Fixed lines mean you can't make a spin cheaper by playing fewer of them, which also stops the old mistake of switching off lines that then show a winning combination. Most modern games work this way, for reasons covered in should you play max lines.

Tower Quest paytable and symbols

The low-paying symbols are card ranks from ten to ace, a familiar choice covered on our card royals symbol page. The higher-paying symbols are fantasy characters. The tower itself is the wild, substituting for regular symbols to complete lines, and the bonus scatters are separate symbols that the wild doesn't replace.

High paysFantasy charactersLarger line wins
WildThe towerSubstitutes for regular symbols
Bonus scatterWizard-themed scatterStarts the bonus game
Free spins scatterPotion-themed scatterStarts the free spins

The paytable inside the game shows every combination in pounds at your stake. It's worth reading once at the stake you actually use, because it shows how small the card-rank wins are compared with the character symbols.

Tower Quest free spins and the wizard bonus

Tower Quest has two separate bonus routes. One is a bonus game themed around an evil wizard, in which you reveal prizes in a card-style contest; the other is a free spins round started by its own scatter, which can add extras such as multipliers or wilds that stay in place. The help screen gives the exact trigger counts, the number of free spins and the modifiers for the version you open; we don't list them because they aren't in the sources we can verify.

Any choices you make in a bonus game, such as which card to reveal, don't affect the expected prize. As with every pick-me bonus, the result is decided by the RNG, and the reveal is presentation.

Neither bonus can be bought in the UK. Slots supplied to Great Britain don't offer a bonus buy, so you reach the features only through normal spins.

Tower Quest max win: what 500x means

A max win of 500x is low by modern standards, where many games quote several thousand times the stake. It limits the very best outcome but tells you that more of the game's return is paid out in smaller amounts. That's consistent with the medium volatility rating.

StakeStake bandMax win
10pLow stake£50
£1Mid stake£500
£2Cap for 18–24s£1,000
£5Cap for 25+£2,500

Stakes are limited in Great Britain to £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over (since 9 April 2025) and £2 for players aged 18 to 24 (since 21 May 2025), as explained in the Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). How caps are applied is covered under max win caps.

A pub-machine comparison

To put 500x in context, a Category C fruit machine in a pub has a £1 maximum stake and a £100 maximum prize, set out in the Commission's gaming machine categories (opens in a new tab). That's a top prize of 100 times the maximum stake. Tower Quest's ceiling is five times higher as a multiple, but both are designed around frequent smaller results rather than life-altering sums. The land-based rules are set out in our guide to pub slot machines.

Tower Quest RTP: 96.24% and lower versions

Play'n GO lists Tower Quest at up to 96.24% RTP, and lower versions exist. The casino chooses which one to run, and the help screen states the figure. At 96.24%, the house edge is 3.76%.

Tower Quest cost per 100 spins at 96.24%
StakeStakedAverage costAverage returned
10p£1037.6p£9.62
20p£2075.2p£19.25
50p£50£1.88£48.12
£1£100£3.76£96.24
£2£200£7.52£192.48
£5£500£18.80£481.20

On a lower version the average cost rises. For example, if a casino ran a 94.24% setting, 100 spins at £1 would cost £5.76 on average instead of £3.76. Our guide to RTP variants explains why versions exist, and reading slot RTP in the UK shows where to find the number.

Tower Quest volatility and small budgets

With medium volatility and a low ceiling, Tower Quest tends to move a balance in smaller steps than high-volatility games. That makes it a reasonable option for adults with modest budgets who want time on the game rather than a shot at a huge prize. It's still a game with a negative average: over enough spins you should expect to lose money.

Wins recycled into more spins will usually stretch play further, but losing runs happen at any volatility. Our best slots for small budgets guide has more ideas, and slot session limits explains how to cap time and spend.

The UK version of Tower Quest

Tower Quest predates the 2021 game-design rules, so the version supplied to Great Britain has been adapted. Since 31 October 2021 there's no autoplay, every spin lasts at least 2.5 seconds, turbo and slam-stop are gone, and returns that don't exceed the stake aren't celebrated with sounds or animations. The Commission's summary of changes to the technical standards (opens in a new tab) lists each rule, and our page on losses disguised as wins explains the last one.

Tower Quest demo: what to look for

Free demo play is available after age verification at UK-licensed casinos that list the game. Use it to see both bonus routes and how often small line wins appear. Because the game is medium volatility with a low cap, a demo gives a reasonable feel for its rhythm, but it doesn't predict real-money results. Our demo slots guide explains more.

Tower Quest myths

  • 'A low max win means it pays more often, so it's a better bet.' It pays differently, not more: the RTP sets the average.
  • 'The wizard bonus rewards good choices.' The prize is decided before you pick.
  • 'You can feel when the free spins are close.' Each spin is independent; there's no build-up.
  • 'Older slots are looser.' No licensed slot is 'loose' or 'tight' by age; see loose and tight slot machines.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Tower Quest?

Tower Quest has an RTP of up to 96.24%, and lower versions also exist. The casino picks which version to run, so check the help screen to see the figure that applies. At 96.24%, the game keeps an average of £3.76 per £100 staked over the very long run; on a lower setting it keeps more. Short sessions can land far from these averages in either direction. To see where to look, read how to find a slot's RTP.

What is the max win on Tower Quest?

The maximum win is 500 times the stake. At 10p a spin that's £50; at £1 it's £500; at the £2 limit for players aged 18 to 24 it's £1,000; and at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over it's £2,500. That's a lower ceiling than most modern slots, which is in line with its medium volatility. Very few spins reach the cap. Casinos may also set payout limits in their terms. See max win caps.

How do Tower Quest free spins work?

The free spins round starts when enough of its own scatter symbols land on one spin. It's separate from the wizard bonus game, which has a different scatter. During free spins the game can apply extras such as multipliers or wilds that stay in place; the help screen lists the exact rules, number of spins and trigger count for your version. As with any bonus, the trigger is random every spin. Our page on what triggers a bonus round explains why.

Is Tower Quest high or low volatility?

Tower Quest is rated medium volatility. Wins come at a moderate rate and size, and the 500x ceiling means there's no single enormous prize holding back a big share of the return. Sessions tend to swing less than on high-volatility games, though losing runs still happen. Volatility doesn't change the long-run cost, which is set by the RTP. For a fuller picture, see our page on medium volatility slot machines.

Who makes Tower Quest?

Tower Quest is made by Play'n GO, a Swedish studio, and was released in 2015. Play'n GO is known for titles such as Book of Dead, Reactoonz and Rise of Merlin, and it often supplies games in several RTP versions so casinos can choose a setting. Tower Quest is one of its older fantasy-themed games. You can read about the studio, its signature mechanics and its best-known slots on our Play'n GO page.

Can I play Tower Quest for free?

Yes, as free demo play after age verification, at UK-licensed casinos that carry the game. Since May 2019, operators have had to confirm your age before letting you play any free version. The demo runs the same maths as the real game, so it's useful for learning the bonus rounds and how the tower wild works. Demo wins aren't real and don't predict real-money play. Our demo slots guide explains what a demo can and can't show.

How many paylines does Tower Quest have?

Tower Quest has 20 fixed paylines across five reels and three rows. They're always active, so you can't lower the cost of a spin by switching some off. A win needs three or more matching symbols on a line starting from the leftmost reel, and the tower wild can substitute for regular symbols to complete a line. The paytable shows the line patterns and the payout for each combination at your stake. Our paylines guide has diagrams in words.

Is Tower Quest good for a small budget?

Its medium volatility and low 500x ceiling make it gentler than many games, so a small budget often lasts longer in spins. At 10p a spin, £10 buys 100 spins with a long-run average cost of about 38p. That's still a loss on average, and a run of dead spins can use the budget quickly. Set a limit you're comfortable losing and stop when you reach it. Our budget planner guide helps you work out sensible stakes.

How does Tower Quest compare with a pub fruit machine?

Tower Quest's top prize is 500 times the stake, while a Category C pub machine has a £1 maximum stake and £100 maximum prize, so its top prize is 100 times the maximum stake. Both are built around frequent smaller wins rather than huge jackpots. The main differences are that pub machines use holds, nudges and feature boards, are limited by category rules and allow cash play, while online slots like Tower Quest have their own UK stake limits. See the difference between slots and fruit machines.
