Demo slots age verification has been required in Great Britain since 7 May 2019: a licensed online casino must confirm you are 18 or over before you can open the free-to-play version of any of its gambling games. Demo play uses play credits and pays no prizes, but the Gambling Commission decided there is no legitimate reason for children to have access to it.
Since 7 May 2019 licensed operators must age-verify customers before they can use free-to-play versions of gambling games.
The Commission accepted that free-to-play is not technically gambling, but said it should not be available to children.
Verification uses your name, address and date of birth, usually checked electronically, with documents only if needed.
The same rules mean you must be verified before you deposit or gamble, including with a bonus or free bet.
Demo results tell you nothing about future real-money spins; each spin is independent.

Demo slots age verification: the short answer
If you want to try a slot in demo mode at a UK-licensed online casino, you have to prove you are 18 or over first. That has been a Gambling Commission requirement since 7 May 2019. The Commission’s announcement, new rules to make online gambling fairer and safer (opens in a new tab), said customers must be age verified before they can access free-to-play versions of gambling games.
In practice this means registering an account and passing an identity check before the demo button works. It is part of the wider set of online rules collected on our UK rules hub, and it explains why many casino lobbies show a log-in prompt where a demo button might be expected.
What the demo slots age verification rule says
The 2019 changes did three things at once. Online gambling businesses must verify a customer’s age and identity:
before the customer can deposit money;
before the customer can gamble, including with a free bet or bonus funded by the operator;
before the customer can access free-to-play versions of the operator’s gambling games.
The Commission said plainly that free-to-play games are not technically gambling, because no prize is involved, but that there was no legitimate reason for them to be available to children. The government minister at the time described the change as a way to close a possible gateway to gambling-related harm. Before 2019, operators had up to 72 hours to complete age checks, which left a window in which an unverified person could play.
Why demo slots need age verification
A demo slot is the real game with play credits instead of money. The reels, symbols, sounds, bonus rounds and big-win animations are identical. That is useful for an adult deciding whether a game suits them, and it is exactly why the Commission did not want children to have access through gambling operators’ websites.
Three concerns sit behind the rule:
Familiarity. Repeated play builds comfort with a gambling product before someone is old enough to gamble.
Misleading impressions. Demo sessions can produce runs of wins that make a game seem generous; real-money play is no more likely to repeat them.
Easy conversion. A demo sits one click away from the cashier, so an unverified player is one step from depositing.

Often instant
Documents (if needed)
If the electronic check fails, you may be asked for a passport, driving licence or household bill
Can take longer; no fixed timescale
Self-exclusion check
Your identity is also used to check whether you have self-excluded

Access
Once verified, demo mode and real-money play become available
Immediately after verification
The Commission notes there is no fixed timescale, because electronic checks can be instant while document checks take longer. Once you are verified, the casino should not ask you to prove your age and identity again as a condition of withdrawing money if it could have asked earlier, although anti-money laundering checks can still require information.

A demo is a fair way to learn how a game’s features work, but it cannot tell you what will happen next in real-money play. The random number generator treats every spin independently, so a bonus that landed twice in demo is no more likely in the next paid session. Our page asking whether free slot games are the same as real ones looks at this in more detail.
Using a demo to plan real-money costs: a worked example
Demo play is most useful for understanding a game before you spend anything. Here is one way an adult might use it:
Open the demo after verifying your account, and read the paytable and rules in the game help screen.
Note the stated RTP, for example 96%.
Decide what a real session would cost: 100 spins at 20p is £20 staked.
Work out the long-run average cost: £20 × 4% = 80p. A single session can be well above or below that.
Use the demo to see how often the game goes quiet between features, without reading anything into the demo’s actual results.
Set a deposit limit before you switch to real money, if you decide to play at all.
Who the demo slot age rule applies to
The requirement applies to Gambling Commission licensees offering gambling to customers in Great Britain. The Commission’s announcement framed it around free-to-play versions of gambling games on licensees’ websites. In practice that covers the casino lobbies, apps and mobile sites of UK-licensed operators, including their mobile slot apps.
The 2019 announcement did not deal with every place a slot demo might appear, such as game review sites or developer showcase pages, and we don’t assume the rule does or doesn’t reach them. If you are unsure about a site, check the Gambling Commission public register (opens in a new tab) to see whether it is licensed.
What demo slots age verification does not cover
Land-based machines. Venue age rules come from the Gambling Act 2005; Category D machines have no statutory minimum age at present. See Category D age rules.
Stake limits. Demo play stakes no money, so the online slot stake limits only bite once you play for real.
Social casino and non-gambling games outside the licensed operator’s own site, which the 2019 announcement did not address.
Blocking access for others in your household, which is better handled with device controls and blocking software; see blocking slot sites.

Using demo slots sensibly as an adult
Demo play is a tool for understanding a game, not practice for winning. Nothing you do in demo mode improves your chances later, and the mood of a demo session (a string of features, a big animated win) can be a poor guide to how the real version feels when your own money is at stake. Our slots for beginners guide covers the basics without the hype.
If you notice demos pulling you back towards real-money play you had decided against, that is worth acting on. GAMSTOP lets you self-exclude from all UK-licensed gambling sites, and the National Gambling Helpline (GamCare) is free and open 24/7 on 0808 8020 133.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I have to verify my age to play demo slots?
Because the Gambling Commission has required it since 7 May 2019. Licensed operators must age-verify customers before they can access free-to-play versions of gambling games, as well as before they deposit or gamble. The Commission accepted that free-to-play games involve no prize, but said there is no legitimate reason for them to be available to children. Verification normally uses your name, address and date of birth. See our demo slots guide for how to use demos once verified.
When did age verification for free slots start?
On 7 May 2019. The Gambling Commission announced the change on 7 February 2019, and from May operators had to verify age and identity before customers could deposit, gamble or play free-to-play versions of gambling games. Before then, operators could take up to 72 hours to finish age checks, during which time an unverified customer could play. Our rules hub lists the other online rules that followed.
What information do I need to give to play a demo slot?
At minimum your name, address and date of birth. The casino checks these electronically, usually against credit reference and electoral roll data, and the result is often instant. If the electronic check can’t confirm you, you may be asked for documents such as a passport, driving licence or household bill. The same check confirms whether you have self-excluded. Read how to play online slots for the steps from sign-up to first spin.
Are demo slots the same as real-money slots?
They are usually the same game with play credits instead of money and no real prizes. The reels, features and paytable work the same way, but demo results tell you nothing about future paid spins, because every spin is independent. The RTP that applies to real play is the figure in the game’s help screen at the casino you use. Our page on whether free slot games are the same as real ones covers the differences.
Can under-18s play free slot games on casino sites?
Not on UK-licensed operators’ sites. Since 7 May 2019 those operators must verify that a customer is 18 or over before allowing access to free-to-play versions of their gambling games. An under-18 cannot open an account, so cannot reach the demo. Land-based rules are different: Category D arcade machines have no statutory minimum age at present. See can under-18s play arcade machines? for the venue rules.
Does age verification for demos mean I’ve signed up to gamble?
No. Registering and verifying your age opens your account, but you choose whether to deposit. You can use demo mode, where the casino offers it, without putting money in. That said, a verified account is one step from the cashier, so set a deposit limit at sign-up if you think you might play for real. Since 31 October 2025 casinos must prompt you to set one before your first deposit. Our guide to setting limits on slots explains the options.
Do demo slots have the same RTP as the real game?
The game is usually the same build, but the figure that matters for real play is the RTP shown in the game’s help screen at the casino you use, because many slots come in more than one RTP version. A demo can’t show you this in practice, since a short demo session is far too small a sample to reveal the long-run return. Our guide on how to find a slot’s RTP shows where to look.
Why can I find slot demos on websites that don’t ask my age?
The 2019 rule was framed around free-to-play games on licensed gambling operators’ websites. Demos that appear elsewhere, such as on review or developer sites, were not addressed by that announcement, and we don’t assume either way whether the rule reaches them. If you want to check whether a site is a licensed gambling operator, use the Gambling Commission’s public register. See free slot machines for more on free play generally.
Can I use a demo to find out when a slot will pay?
No. A slot’s random number generator decides each result independently, so demo play cannot reveal timing, patterns or a slot that is about to pay. A run of features in demo mode is just chance, and the next real-money spin starts from scratch. Demos are useful for learning how features work and how often a game tends to go quiet, nothing more. Read do slot machines have patterns? for the maths.
Does GAMSTOP block demo slots too?
GAMSTOP is a self-exclusion scheme for UK-licensed gambling websites and apps, and all online operators have had to take part since 31 March 2020. Because those sites must verify your identity before you use free-to-play games, and the check includes whether you have self-excluded, a self-excluded person should not be able to reach demo play on a participating operator’s site. Our page on how to block slot sites covers GAMSTOP and other tools.
Gambling can be addictive. Free, confidential help is available 24 hours a day from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. Visit GamCare.org.uk and GamCare, or block yourself from all UK-licensed gambling sites with GAMSTOP.
