Bet level meaning in slots

Bet level meaning in slots: the setting that decides how many coins you stake on each payline, usually from 1 to 10. Your total stake is bet level × coin value × number of lines, so raising the bet level multiplies the cost of every spin and every prize by the same amount; on most games it doesn’t change the odds.

Key takeaways

  • Bet level = coins per line; total stake = bet level × coin value × lines.
  • Different bet level and coin value pairs can reach the same stake, with the same cash prizes.
  • On most slots the bet level scales stakes and prizes but not the odds; a few games differ, and the help screen says so.
  • UK games block any setting above £5 a spin (25+) or £2 (18–24).

Bet level meaning in slots: coins per line

Older-style online slots, especially from studios that built games around coins, split your stake into three dials. The coin size sets what one coin is worth. The number of lines sets how many paylines are in play. The bet level sets how many coins go on each line. Turn the bet level from 1 to 2 and every line carries twice as many coins, so the spin costs twice as much and every prize doubles.

Some studios call the same dial ‘coins per line’, ‘bet multiplier’ or simply ‘level’. Many newer games hide it entirely behind a single stake button in pounds, but the maths underneath is the same. This glossary entry shows how the dial works and how to use it sensibly; the neighbouring entries on line bet and total bet cover the other two sides.

How bet level works: the stake formula, step by step

  1. Check the number of lines: say 10 fixed lines, as on Starburst, whose ten lines pay both ways.
  2. Choose a coin value, for example 2p.
  3. Choose a bet level, for example 5. That is 5 coins on each line.
  4. Multiply: 5 coins × 2p × 10 lines = £1 a spin.
  5. Read the prize side the same way: a line that pays 20 coins per coin bet pays 20 × 5 × 2p = £2.

If the game shows the total in pounds, use that figure; it already includes all three settings. Our guide on how to play a slot machine walks through the controls on a typical screen.

Different bet levels, same £1 stake

Bet level and coin value are interchangeable routes to the same stake. On a 10-line game, these four settings all cost £1 a spin:

Four ways to stake £1 on a 10-line slot
Bet levelCoin valueCoins per spinStake per spin100 spins at 96% RTP: average cost
101p100£1£4
52p50£1£4
25p20£1£4
110p10£1£4

The coin count on the win meter differs between rows, but the cash value of every prize is identical. That is why it helps to switch a game’s display to cash where the option exists: coins make the same win look bigger or smaller depending on the setting.

Does a higher bet level change your chances?

On most slots, no. The random number generator picks the same outcomes whatever the bet level; the level just multiplies the payout. A few games are built differently, and their help screens say so. Mega Joker is the classic case: our facts list an RTP of up to 99%, reached at the top stake with its Supermeter mode. Some jackpot games also link jackpot chances or prize size to the stake.

Don’t confuse bet level with an ante bet, an optional extra stake that changes the game, typically making a bonus more likely in return for a higher cost per spin. That is a different control with its own rules; our ante bet glossary entry explains it. For the general question, see should you bet max on slots.

Bet level and UK online slot stake limits

In Great Britain, the bet level can never push the stake above the legal cap. Players aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 a spin, under the Gambling Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab), in force since 9 April 2025. Players aged 18 to 24 are limited to £2 a spin from 21 May 2025, as the government confirmed (opens in a new tab).

So on a 10-line game with a 10p coin, a 25-year-old can pick bet level 5 (£5) but not 6 (£6), and a 20-year-old can pick level 2 (£2) but not 3. Games handle this by greying out or removing settings above the cap. The limit applies to the whole game cycle, so any extra stake placed within the same cycle counts too. More on the £5 limit and the £2 limit for 18–24s.

Choosing a bet level for your budget

Work backwards from what you are prepared to spend. With a £50 session budget, a 20p stake gives 250 spins before any wins are counted, while £1 gives 50. The average cost per spin at 96% RTP is 0.8p at 20p and 4p at £1, so a lower level makes the same budget last roughly five times as long on average. High-volatility games can still empty a budget quickly, whatever the level.

Frequently asked questions

What does bet level mean in slots?

Bet level is the number of coins you stake on each payline. Your total stake is the bet level multiplied by the coin value and the number of lines, so on a 10-line game at a 2p coin, bet level 5 costs £1 a spin. Raising the level raises the stake and the cash value of every prize in proportion. Some games call it coins per line or bet multiplier. Our coin size entry covers the other half of the calculation, and line bet explains the per-line view.

Is it better to raise the bet level or the coin value?

For the same total stake, it usually makes no difference to cash prizes or odds. Bet level 10 at 1p and bet level 1 at 10p both stake £1 on a 10-line game and pay the same in pounds. Only the coin count on screen changes. A few games treat higher stakes differently, for example by improving the return at the top setting, and the help screen will say so. Our game help screen entry shows where to check.

Does max bet level increase my chance of a bonus?

On most modern slots, no: the bonus trigger chance is the same at every bet level, and only the payout scales. Some games do link features or jackpots to the stake, and an ante bet, where offered, raises the cost to change the trigger rate; both are explained in the help screen. Choosing the maximum just because it is there raises your average cost per spin. Our answer to should you bet max on slots gives worked examples, and bonus trigger odds explains what sets the trigger rate.

What is the highest bet level allowed in the UK?

There is no rule about the level itself, only about the total stake. A UK online slot can’t accept more than £5 a spin from a player aged 25 or over, or £2 from a player aged 18 to 24, so whichever levels push the stake above that are blocked. On a 10-line game at a 10p coin, that means level 5 for 25s and over and level 2 for 18–24s. Our online slot stake limits page explains the rules.

Why do my wins look different when I change the bet level?

Because many games count wins in coins, and the number of coins depends on your settings. A line paying 20 coins per coin bet shows 100 coins at bet level 5 and 200 at level 10; at a 1p coin that is £1 or £2. If you then change the coin value, the same win can show fewer coins but the same cash. Switching the display to cash, where the game allows it, removes the confusion. Our credits meter entry explains how balances are shown.

Should I lower my bet level when losing?

Lowering your stake can make a budget last longer, but it doesn’t change your chances on the next spin, because each spin is independent. What matters most is deciding your budget and stop point in advance and keeping to them. Raising the level to win back losses is chasing and usually makes the losses bigger. If you are finding it hard to stop, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24/7. See our guide to slot session limits.

Is bet level the same on every slot?

No. The range, the name and even whether the control exists vary by studio and by game. Some offer levels 1 to 10, others fewer or more, and many newer games replace bet level and coin value with a single total stake selector. The help screen or bet panel tells you the options for the game in front of you. Our guide on how to play online slots shows the main control layouts you are likely to see.
