Collect button meaning in slots

On a slot, the collect button means cash out: press it and the machine pays your remaining balance as coins or a printed ticket instead of keeping it for more play. In a gamble feature, collect has a second meaning: take the win as it stands rather than risk it. Online slots have no cash-out button; you withdraw through the casino's cashier.

Key takeaways

  • On a machine, collect empties the credit and bank meters as coins, a ticket or a staff payout.
  • In a gamble or ladder feature, collect banks the win offered instead of risking it.
  • Online, your balance stays in your account and you withdraw through the cashier.
  • Collecting and starting again never resets or improves the odds.

Collect button meaning in slots: the two uses

The collect button does one of two jobs depending on when you press it. Between games on a pub, arcade or casino machine, it pays out whatever is on the credits meter and, on many fruit machines, the bank. During a feature that offers a gamble, it means stop here and keep what you have. Both uses appear on this page; the wider vocabulary is in our slot glossary.

A third use of the word causes confusion. In bonus rounds such as cash collect, a collector symbol gathers the cash values shown on other symbols. That is a game mechanic, not a cash-out, and it is decided by the reels like any other feature. Relax Gaming's Money Cart 2, for example, has collector symbols in its respin round.

How a slot machine pays out when you press collect

What happens next depends on the machine's payout hardware. Older and many pub machines drop coins from a hopper, a coin reservoir with a counting mechanism. Bally's Money Honey, dated to 1963 or 1964 depending on the source, is credited with bringing automatic hopper payouts of up to 500 coins; accounts differ on whether it had a true bottomless hopper, as the Las Vegas Advisor (opens in a new tab) notes. Newer cabinets print a barcoded ticket instead, a system known as ticket-in, ticket-out (opens in a new tab).

  1. Finish the current game; the button is usually disabled mid-spin or mid-feature.
  2. If the machine has a bank meter, decide whether to collect it or transfer it to credit.
  3. Press collect and wait for coins or a ticket.
  4. If the machine shows a hopper-empty or fault message, do not walk away; ask staff to pay the balance.
  5. Cash a ticket at the kiosk or counter promptly and keep it safe until you do.

Our pages on bill validators and hoppers and ticket-in, ticket-out explain the hardware. If a machine fails to pay, read what to do if a slot machine malfunctions.

Collect versus gamble: the maths of taking a win

Many fruit machines, and some online fruit-style games, offer a gamble after a win: double or nothing, higher or lower, or a climb up a gamble ladder. The collect button ends the gamble and banks the current amount. A fair 50/50 double-or-nothing leaves the average value unchanged; anything less than fair lowers it.

Average value of collecting £4 versus gambling it (illustrative)
ChoiceOutcomesAverage value
Collect£4 for certain£4.00
Fair double or nothing50% £8, 50% £0£4.00
Ladder step to £6 at 50%50% £6, 50% £0£3.00
Double at a 45% chance45% £8, 55% £0£3.60

Gambling only adds variance, never value, so collecting is the lower-risk choice. On a compensated fruit machine the odds offered on a gamble may also depend on the machine's position against its target payout; our page on compensated machines explains that. The hi-lo gamble feature covers the card-based version.

Collecting winnings from an online slot

Online slots pay wins straight into your account balance, so there is nothing to collect inside the game. To take money out, close the game and request a withdrawal. Under the Commission's responsible product design standards (opens in a new tab), a casino must not give you the option to cancel a withdrawal once requested, and its guidance says you should not be offered the chance to deposit those funds instead.

The Commission's page for players who can't withdraw their winnings (opens in a new tab) sets out what to do if a payout stalls. Processing times differ by casino and method; check the cashier, or see our partner pages such as Ladbrokes withdrawal times.

Collect button myths

  • Cashing out and re-inserting does not reset the odds. A random machine treats each game independently; see do slot machines remember past spins.
  • Leaving a balance on does not keep a machine warm. No machine is hot or due; read about loose and tight machines.
  • Collecting early is not a strategy to beat the machine. It simply fixes your result for the session; no button press changes the built-in payout percentage.

Frequently asked questions

What does the collect button do on a slot machine?

It pays out your remaining balance. On a pub or arcade machine that usually means coins from the hopper; on many casino and adult gaming centre machines it prints a ticket you cash at a kiosk or counter. If the machine cannot pay, staff settle the balance by hand. In a gamble feature the same button means take the current win instead of risking it. Our page on whether pub machines pay out in cash explains how payment works in different venues.

Should I collect or gamble a win on a fruit machine?

Collecting keeps the full value of the win. A gamble can at best leave the average value unchanged, if the odds are exactly fair, and often lowers it, for example when a ladder step is smaller than double. So gambling a win adds risk without adding value. Some machines also compensate gamble outcomes against their payout target. Our fruit machine features guide explains each type of gamble and what the odds usually look like, so you can decide in advance.

Is there a collect button on online slots?

Not in the cash-out sense. Online wins go straight into your casino balance, and you take money out through the cashier with a withdrawal request. Some online fruit-style games do have a collect button inside a gamble feature, meaning keep the win. UK rules stop casinos offering to cancel a withdrawal once you request it. See our guide to how to play online slots for where the balance, cashier and help screen sit in a typical game.

What happens if a machine runs out of coins when I press collect?

The machine normally shows a fault or hopper-empty message and stops paying, holding the remaining balance on the meter. Stay with the machine and call a member of staff, who can pay the rest by hand or refill the hopper. Do not leave the balance unattended. If there is a dispute about the amount, ask the venue to check the machine's records. Our page on getting your money back from a slot machine explains the next steps if it is not resolved.

Is collect the same as the cash collect feature?

No. The collect button cashes out or banks a win. Cash collect is a bonus mechanic in which a collector symbol lands and adds up the cash values shown on other symbols in view. It is triggered and paid by the game's random outcome like any other feature, so you have no control over it. Our cash collect feature page explains how collectors work and why the bonus round is often where most of a game's return sits.

Does cashing out and starting again change my luck?

No. A random slot gives every game the same chances regardless of what happened before, so collecting and re-inserting money resets nothing. On compensated fruit machines the machine tracks its own payout position, not yours, so swapping in and out does not help either. The only thing cashing out changes is how much you have staked. Our guide to slot machine myths covers this and other common beliefs about timing and luck.
