Feature meaning in slots: a feature is any special mechanic that goes beyond matching symbols on a line, such as wilds, cascading reels, multipliers, free spins or, on fruit machines, holds and nudges. Some features act on every spin in the base game; others are bonus rounds you have to trigger first.
“Feature” is the umbrella word for any mechanic beyond plain symbol matches.
Base-game features act during normal spins; bonus features need a trigger.
Features redistribute the RTP; they do not add to it.
On fruit machines, “the feature” often means the trail or bonus board.

Feature meaning in slots, in plain terms
In slot language, a feature is anything the game does beyond paying for matching symbols. Wild symbols are a feature. So are tumbling reels, random multipliers, collect symbols and free spins. The word has a broad sense, covering all of these, and a narrow one: players often say “I got the feature” meaning a bonus round has started. The help screen usually lists features one by one, and our features hub does the same across hundreds of games.
The narrow sense overlaps with bonus game, while the broad sense includes plenty of things that happen in the base game. Both are covered in the slot machine glossary.
Cascades, also called tumbles or avalanches, show how one feature can stretch a single stake. Here is a made-up sequence on a 20p spin.
The spin lands a win of 10p. Winning symbols disappear.
New symbols fall into the gaps and form another win of 15p.
Those symbols clear and a third drop pays 25p.
No further win forms, so the sequence ends.
Total return: 10p + 15p + 25p = 50p from one 20p stake, a net gain of 30p.
Add a multiplier that rises with each cascade and the last step could pay 75p instead. That compounding is why cascade games can produce rare large results and long runs of small ones, and why they tend to be rated higher volatility.
How features change a slot's cost and volatility
Features do not create money. The game's RTP is fixed by its maths model, and every feature's average value is already inside that number. What features do is move the return around: from many small base-game wins towards fewer, larger feature wins. The more value sits in a rare feature, the more the game swings.
Compare Starburst, whose expanding wild respins happen in the base game and which is rated low volatility, with Book of Dead, whose free spins with an expanding symbol hold much of the return, rated high. Both return around 96%, but a session on each feels very different. If you want to know why slots have so many features now, part of the answer is that features give designers more ways to shape that experience.
Features on fruit machines: holds, nudges and the trail
On British fruit machines, “the feature” traditionally means the board or trail around the reels where you climb towards cash prizes. The machine also offers holds and nudges, and sometimes a skill stop, which let you act on what the machine has offered. Using them well can avoid missing a win the machine is presenting, but it does not beat the built-in payout percentage, and many such machines are compensated. Our fruit machine features guide explains each one.
Some games let you risk a win on a higher-or-lower or red-or-black choice. The hi-lo gamble feature does not improve your long-run return; at best it is roughly neutral on average and it adds risk. On fruit machines a gamble ladder works similarly. Treat it as optional and skip it if you are trying to keep a session steady.
UK rules on slot features
UK-licensed online slots cannot offer autoplay, turbo or slam-stop, must not celebrate returns equal to or less than the stake, and must take at least 2.5 seconds per spin, all since 31 October 2021. They also do not offer feature buys; see bonus buy in the UK. Game rules, including how each feature works, must be available to players under the remote gambling and software technical standards (opens in a new tab).
Slot features and the partner offers
Offer spins at the two partner casinos play every feature a game has, at a fixed stake of 10p. Coral gives new players aged 18+ who deposit and bet £10 or more on slots 100 free spins on selected games; accept within 48 hours, use within 7 days, no wagering on winnings. Ladbrokes gives new customers aged 18+ who deposit and play £10 on slots 50 free spins a day for 10 days (up to 500), 10p each, claimed before 23:59 daily, no wagering. Certain payment methods do not qualify and terms apply. The same company runs both, so read the terms on holding accounts with each, and search each lobby rather than assuming a particular game is listed.
Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open a new account with another; check the terms before signing up.

Frequently asked questions
What does feature mean in slots?
A feature is any special mechanic in a slot beyond paying for matching symbols. That includes wilds, scatters, cascading reels, multipliers, respins and bonus rounds like free spins. Players also use “the feature” to mean a bonus round in particular. On fruit machines it often refers to the trail board. Every feature's average value is included in the game's RTP. Our features hub lists them with explanations of how each one works.
What is the difference between a feature and a bonus?
A bonus is one kind of feature: a separate round started by a trigger, such as free spins or a pick-me game. Features also include things that happen on ordinary spins without any trigger, such as wilds, tumbling reels or random multipliers. So every bonus is a feature, but not every feature is a bonus. Casino bonuses are different again: promotions with terms, not game mechanics. The bonus game entry covers the in-game kind.
Do more features mean a better slot?
No. More features make a game busier, but they do not raise the RTP, which is fixed by the maths model. Features change how the return is delivered: more of it in rare, larger wins usually means higher volatility. A simple slot with few features can return as much as a complex one. Pick games by RTP, volatility and what you enjoy. Our guide on how to choose a slot machine suggests what to compare.
What is a random feature on a slot?
A random feature is one that can activate on any spin without a visible trigger, such as wilds added to the reels, a multiplier applied to a win, or symbols upgraded. It is still decided by the RNG at the start of the spin, so it is not a sign that the machine is about to pay. Random features keep the base game lively. Our page on random features gives examples from well-known studios.
Can I buy a slot feature in the UK?
No. Slots at UK-licensed casinos do not offer feature buys, so features can only be reached through normal play. Some versions of the same games available elsewhere include a buy button, which is why you may see it in streams or videos. A site offering feature buys to players in Great Britain is unlikely to hold a UK licence. Read our explainer on bonus buy in the UK for how games are adapted for this market.
Are fruit machine features random?
Not always in the same way as online slots. Many British fruit machines are compensated, which means the machine adjusts what it offers, including features, to stay near its target payout percentage, and it must say whether it is random or compensated. Holds and nudges give you choices, and making the most of an offered nudge can avoid missing a win, but no technique changes the machine's long-run percentage. Our page on how fruit machine nudges work explains the details.
Where can I see what features a slot has?
In the game's help screen or paytable, usually behind an i or menu icon. It lists each feature, the trigger, what it pays and the game's RTP. On UK-licensed sites this information must be available before you play. Developer websites and our own game pages also describe features, but the in-game rules are the version that applies. See what a slot game help screen shows for a guided tour.
