Mega Joker slot

The Mega Joker slot is NetEnt’s three-reel fruit game with five paylines, a second set of Supermeter reels and a random progressive jackpot. Its RTP reaches up to 99%, but only when you play the top stake and use the Supermeter; lower stakes return noticeably less. This page explains exactly how that works and what it means for UK players.

Key takeaways

  • Mega Joker is a classic 3 × 3 fruit slot with five paylines and a separate Supermeter mode.
  • The headline 99% RTP applies only at the top stake with the Supermeter; lower stakes return less.
  • Base-game wins can be collected or moved into the Supermeter, which plays at higher stakes.
  • The top prize is a random progressive jackpot, so there is no fixed max win multiple.
  • High volatility means long losing runs are normal, even with a high top-end RTP.

What is the Mega Joker slot machine?

Mega Joker is a classic slot from NetEnt, the Stockholm studio that has been part of Evolution since December 2020. It looks like an old casino fruit machine: cherries, lemons, oranges, plums, grapes, watermelons, bells, sevens, a treasure chest and the joker. The screen is split into two sets of reels. The lower set is the base game; the upper set is the Supermeter, a higher-stake mode you move into with a win.

Its fame comes from one number. Mega Joker is often listed as one of the highest-RTP slots online, with up to 99%. That figure is real, but it has strict conditions, and a player who doesn’t understand them may end up on a much lower return. Explaining those conditions is the main job of this page.

We use only the RTP, volatility, layout and jackpot details in our verified records. Where a detail depends on the casino’s version (coin values, bet levels), check the game’s help screen.

How Mega Joker plays: base game to Supermeter

The game is a two-stage loop. You play the lower reels at your chosen bet. When a spin wins, you choose whether to collect that win to your balance or transfer it into the Supermeter. The Supermeter then plays its own reels at a higher bet per spin, drawing from the transferred amount, and its wins build up in the Supermeter until you collect them or it runs out.

  1. Set a coin value and bet level for the base reels.
  2. Spin the lower 3 × 3 reels; wins are paid on the five lines.
  3. After a win, choose Collect (to your balance) or move the win to the Supermeter.
  4. In the Supermeter, choose a Supermeter bet; each spin is taken from the Supermeter total.
  5. Supermeter wins are added to the Supermeter total, which you can collect at any point between spins.
  6. When the Supermeter total is too small for another spin, the game returns to the base reels.

This structure is why Mega Joker feels more like a pub fruit machine than a modern video slot: it asks you to decide what to do with each win. In the UK each spin, in either mode, still takes at least 2.5 seconds, and there is no autoplay.

Mega Joker RTP: why 99% only applies at the top stake

The Mega Joker RTP is not one number. NetEnt designed the paytable so that higher bet levels, and use of the Supermeter, pay better than lower ones. The game reaches up to 99% only when you play the top stake level and send wins into the Supermeter. At lower bet levels the return is lower, and the help screen lists the figure for each. This is a rare case where betting max changes the RTP itself, not just the size of prizes.

Why the bet level matters in Mega Joker (illustration)
Average returnHouse edgeAverage cost of £100 stakedAverage cost of £500 staked
99% (top stake with Supermeter)1%£1£5
96% (typical modern slot)4%£4£20
92% (illustrative lower level)8%£8£40

The 96% and 92% rows are illustrations to show how much the bet level can matter, not Mega Joker’s official figures for particular stakes; the help screen gives those. Even at 99% the house still has an edge, and high volatility means the 1% average says almost nothing about a single session. Our explainer on RTP and the guide to RTP variants cover the general principle.

Mega Joker under UK stake limits

UK online slots now have a maximum stake per spin: £5 for players aged 25 and over since 9 April 2025, and £2 for players aged 18–24 since 21 May 2025, as set out in the Gambling Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). On Mega Joker this interacts with the RTP structure, because the best return depends on playing the top bet level.

If the top level at your casino’s coin value would cost more than your limit, the casino must stop you staking it, so you may not be able to reach the 99% setting. Whether you can depends on the coin values and bet levels in that casino’s version. Check the help screen, and read our page on the £2 stake limit for 18 to 24-year-olds for how casinos apply it.

Mega Joker average cost per hour at 99% RTP (if the top level is allowed)

£11,440£1,440£14.40
£21,440£2,880£28.80
£51,440£7,200£72

Most people play far slower than the maximum speed. The point of the table is that a 1% edge on a large stake still adds up.

Mega Joker symbols, jokers and mystery wins

The symbols are the traditional fruit set, which our symbols hub traces back to early American machines. Cherries and lemons sit at the low end; bells, sevens and the treasure chest pay more. The joker is special: three on a line in the base game award a mystery win rather than a fixed prize, and in the Supermeter a joker can award a mystery prize too. The amounts depend on the bet and are shown in the paytable.

A mystery prize is still decided by the random number generator at the moment of the spin; the reveal is a display, not a choice the game makes afterwards. The Supermeter has its own paytable, with different symbols paying more than in the base game, which is part of how the higher RTP is built.

The Mega Joker progressive jackpot and max win

The Mega Joker max win is a random progressive jackpot rather than a fixed multiple. A share of each bet feeds the jackpot, which grows until it is won, and it can be won at random on a base-game spin. Because the prize changes all the time, there is no fixed max win figure to quote at £1, £2 or £5. The current amount is usually displayed on the game screen.

Progressive contributions are part of the published RTP: money that goes into the jackpot is returned to someone, eventually, but most players never see it. That is why a high RTP that includes a jackpot can feel lower in everyday play. Our page on how slot jackpots are funded explains the mechanics, and what happens when a jackpot is won covers the payout side.

Mega Joker volatility: high, despite the RTP

Mega Joker is rated high volatility. A high RTP and high volatility can sit together: the long-run return is generous, but it arrives unevenly, with many losing spins, occasional larger wins in the Supermeter and the rare jackpot. A £20 session can disappear quickly even at the 99% setting. Our explainer on volatility shows how variance and RTP are separate measures.

Mega Joker vs a UK pub fruit machine

Mega Joker borrows the look of a fruit machine but works under different rules. A pub machine in Great Britain is usually Category C, with a £1 maximum stake and a £100 maximum prize, and it can offer nudges and holds. Mega Joker is an online slot under the remote rules, with no nudges or holds and a progressive jackpot that is not capped at £100. Our comparison of slots and fruit machines covers the differences in more depth.

Slots similar to Mega Joker

Fire Joker from Play’n GO is the nearest modern cousin: 3 × 3, five lines, medium volatility, a 96.15% RTP and an 800x max win, without a Supermeter. Sizzling Hot Deluxe from Novomatic keeps the fruit theme on five reels. For other games with jackpots that grow, see Mega Fortune, another NetEnt progressive. Our fruit slots online page lists more.

Mega Joker myths and facts

  • Myth: the 99% RTP applies whatever you bet. It applies only at the top stake with the Supermeter.
  • Myth: a 99% game can’t lose much. High volatility means sessions swing widely; the 1% edge is a long-run average.
  • Myth: the jackpot is due when it is large. Each spin has the same chance regardless of the jackpot’s size.
  • Fact: the Supermeter is a choice. You decide whether to collect or transfer each base-game win.

How to check Mega Joker’s RTP and play the demo

  1. Pass the casino’s age verification (required before any demo since May 2019).
  2. Open Mega Joker and tap the menu or information button.
  3. Find the RTP section; note the figure for each bet level and for the Supermeter.
  4. Check which bet levels your stake limit allows.
  5. Read the jackpot rules to see how it is won.

UK rules require games to make their rules and return available to players, under the Commission’s technical standard on game rules and likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab). A Mega Joker demo uses play money, so it is a safe way to learn the Supermeter decisions before staking real money.

Where to play Mega Joker in the UK

No partner offer is tied to Mega Joker, and progressive and classic titles are not in every lobby, so search the casino’s game list. Coral gives new players aged 18+ 100 free spins after they deposit and bet £10 on slots; the spins are worth 10p each on selected games and must be accepted within 48 hours. Ladbrokes gives up to 500 free spins, 50 a day for 10 days, after a £10 slots spend. PlayOJO’s 80 no-wagering spins (first deposit of £10 or more) are played on Big Bass Bonanza. Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Mega Joker?

Mega Joker’s RTP reaches up to 99%, but only at the top stake level with the Supermeter in use. At lower bet levels the return is lower, and the game’s help screen lists the figure for each level. Even at 99%, the house keeps an average of £1 for every £100 staked over the long run, and the game is highly volatile, so short sessions vary widely. The comparison of what slot has the highest RTP compares it with other high-return games.

How does the Mega Joker Supermeter work?

The Supermeter is a second set of reels that you enter by transferring a base-game win into it instead of collecting it. Supermeter spins are played at a higher bet, taken from the transferred amount, and use a different paytable. Wins build up in the Supermeter until you collect them or the balance is too small for another spin, when the game returns to the base reels. Using the Supermeter at the top stake is what gives the highest RTP. Our guide to paytables explains how different tables change returns.

What is the Mega Joker max win?

Mega Joker’s max win is a random progressive jackpot, so there is no fixed multiple of the stake. Part of every bet feeds the jackpot, which grows until someone wins it, and the current amount is normally shown on screen. Because the jackpot changes all the time, any figure quoted elsewhere is only a snapshot. The jackpot can drop on a base-game spin at random. The explainer on what happens when a slot jackpot is won covers how payouts work.

Should you bet max on Mega Joker?

Mega Joker is one of the few slots where the bet level changes the RTP itself, so the top stake with the Supermeter gives the best return. That does not mean you should stake more than you can afford. A 1% house edge on a £5 stake can cost more in pounds per hour than a 4% edge on 50p. Your stake limit (£5, or £2 if you are 18–24) may also stop you reaching the top level. Our guide on whether to bet max sets out the trade-off.

Is Mega Joker high volatility?

Yes, Mega Joker is rated high volatility. Its return arrives unevenly: many spins lose, the Supermeter produces occasional larger wins, and the progressive jackpot is rare. That means a session can end quickly even at the 99% setting, and the high RTP only shows itself over a very large number of spins. Volatility and RTP measure different things, so a game can have both a high RTP and high swings. Read our explainer on high volatility slot machines for more.

Is Mega Joker a fruit machine?

Mega Joker is an online slot designed to look and feel like a classic fruit machine, but legally it is not one. In Great Britain, pub fruit machines are usually Category C, with a £1 maximum stake and a £100 maximum prize, and can offer nudges and holds. Mega Joker follows online rules, with stakes up to £5 (or £2 for 18–24s), no nudges or holds, and a progressive jackpot. The guide to whether you can play fruit machines online explains the difference.

What does the joker do in Mega Joker?

The joker is the game’s special symbol. Three jokers on a payline in the base game award a mystery win instead of a fixed prize, and jokers can also award mystery prizes in the Supermeter. The amounts depend on your bet and are shown in the paytable. Like every outcome, the mystery amount is decided by the random number generator at the moment of the spin, not chosen afterwards. The [joker symbol] page(/symbols/joker/) traces how it ended up on slot reels.

Can I play Mega Joker for free?

You can play a Mega Joker demo where a UK casino offers one, but only after age verification, a requirement since May 2019. Demo mode uses play money and cannot pay real prizes. It is a good way to practise the collect-or-Supermeter decision and check the RTP for each bet level before staking real money. The guide to free slot machines explains how demo play works in the UK.

How much does Mega Joker cost to play per hour?

At the top 99% setting, the average cost is 1% of what you stake. UK slots must take at least 2.5 seconds per spin, so the maximum is 1,440 spins an hour: at £1 that is £1,440 staked and about £14.40 average cost; at £5 it is £7,200 staked and about £72. At lower bet levels the RTP is lower, so the cost per pound staked is higher. Real sessions vary a lot. Our slot cost calculator works out other figures.

Who makes Mega Joker?

Mega Joker is made by NetEnt, a studio founded in 1996 and based in Stockholm, Sweden. NetEnt has been part of Evolution since December 2020, alongside Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming and Nolimit City. It is best known for Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest and Mega Fortune, and for mechanics such as avalanche reels and expanding wilds. Mega Joker is one of its classic-style titles. See our NetEnt provider page for more of its games.
