Can you play fruit machines online? Yes. UK-licensed casinos offer online fruit machines: classic fruit slots, pub-style games from British makers and fruit-themed video slots. They are online slots, not pub machines, so different rules apply: random results, £5 or £2 stake limits and age checks before any demo play.
Online fruit machines are legal at casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission, for players aged 18 and over.
They are online slots, so they follow online rules: £5 stake limit (£2 for 18–24s), 2.5-second spins, no autoplay.
Results come from a random number generator; online games are not compensated like many pub machines.
Holds, nudges and feature trails appear in some online titles, but check the help screen of each game.

Yes, you can play fruit machines online in the UK
Online fruit machines are widely available at casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission. What you get is a fruit slot: a game that copies the look of a pub machine or a classic three-reel slot, with cherries, lemons, bells, bars and sevens, running on a casino website or app. You must be 18 or over, have a verified account, and play within the online rules that apply to every slot in Great Britain.
The important point is that an online fruit machine is legally an online slot, not a pub fruit machine. It does not belong to Category C or any other land-based category, it is not limited to a £1 stake or a £100 prize, and it is not compensated. This page explains what changes when the fruit machine moves online and how to pick a game sensibly. More answers to common questions are in our slot machine questions hub.
Types of online fruit machines you can play
‘Fruit machine’ covers several quite different online games. Knowing which kind you are looking at tells you a lot about the maths.
Classic fruit slots. Three or five reels, a handful of paylines, fruit and sevens. Simple, often medium volatility, few bonus features. See classic slot machines.
Pub-style games from British makers. Online titles from companies with roots in UK pub machines, often with pick bonuses, trails or stake-linked returns.
Fruit-themed video slots. Modern grids with fruit symbols but video-slot mechanics such as cluster pays and cascades.
Jackpot fruit slots. Simple fruit games that add a progressive or random jackpot on top.
Barcrest is the best-known British link between the two worlds. The company was a major UK fruit machine maker in the 1980s and now produces online slots for Light & Wonder. Our Barcrest provider page covers its online games, and who makes UK fruit machines? covers the land-based makers.
Online fruit machine examples and their RTP
The table lists fruit-style online slots from our verified slot facts. Figures come from developers’ game sheets or reference listings; casinos can run different RTP versions, so always confirm in the game’s help screen.
Two quirks stand out. Mega Joker’s headline figure applies only when playing the Supermeter mode at the top stake, so the return at lower stakes is less. Several Barcrest games tie the return to the stake level, a habit carried over from machine design: our Barcrest page notes typical returns of around 94% to 96%, often linked to stake. If you want the highest figure, the help screen tells you which stake earns it.
Pub fruit machine vs online fruit machine: the key differences
The cabinet in the pub and the game on your phone may share symbols, but the rules behind them differ in almost every respect.

The payout model is the biggest practical change. A compensated pub machine can deliver runs of features as it catches up with its target, which many players recognise as paying out in bursts. An online fruit slot has no such memory: each spin is drawn independently by a tested random number generator. Our broader online vs land-based comparison covers the rest.
Do online fruit machines have holds and nudges?
Some do. Online games inspired by British pub machines can include holds, nudges, feature trails and cash ladders, and some add a hi-lo gamble on wins. Many classic fruit slots, however, are simple spin-and-pay games with none of these. There is no way to tell from the thumbnail; open the paytable or help screen before you play.
Where holds and nudges exist online, they work differently from the pub. The outcome is still decided by the random number generator, and using a hold well only helps you take what the game has offered. Nothing you do with the buttons changes the RTP. Our guide on how to use nudges explains the decisions that do matter.
UK rules for playing fruit machines online
Every online fruit machine offered to players in Great Britain must follow the Gambling Commission’s online rules. The main ones:
Stake limits. A maximum of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over from 9 April 2025, and £2 per spin for players aged 18 to 24 from 21 May 2025, as set out in the Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab).
Game design. Since 31 October 2021: no autoplay, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no turbo or slam-stop, no celebrating a return equal to or below your stake, and your net position and session time always on screen. See slot game design rules.
Age and identity. Casinos must verify your age and identity before you deposit or play, including free-to-play demos, under rules in force since May 2019.
Payments. Credit cards cannot be used to gamble in Great Britain, including through e-wallets funded by a credit card, since 14 April 2020.
Features. Slots at UK-licensed casinos do not offer bonus buy, so features are reached through normal play only.
Choose a casino licensed by the Gambling Commission; check its licence on the Commission’s public register.
Open an account and complete age and identity verification.
Set a deposit limit before your first deposit; casinos must prompt you to do this.
Try the game in demo mode if it is offered, which is free demo play, after age verification.
Open the help screen and note the RTP, volatility and how any holds, nudges or trails work.
Pick a stake that suits your budget, remembering each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds.
Stop when your budget is used or your time is up, rather than chasing a feature.

What an online fruit machine session costs
Because online slots can be faster and can take higher stakes than a pub machine, the cost can climb quickly. The arithmetic is the same: total staked multiplied by the share the game keeps.

Frequently asked questions
Can you play fruit machines online in the UK?
Yes. Fruit-style slots are offered by many casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission. You need to be 18 or over and pass age and identity checks, and the games follow online slot rules rather than pub machine rules, including the £5 per spin stake limit for over-25s and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds. Always check the casino’s licence first. Our fruit slots online page explains the different kinds you will find.
Are online fruit machines the same as pub fruit machines?
No. They may look similar, but online fruit machines are online slots. They use a random number generator rather than a compensated payout model, have no £100 prize cap, can take stakes up to £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, and follow online design rules such as the 2.5-second minimum spin time. A pub machine is a Category C gaming machine with a £1 stake limit. See what is the difference between slots and fruit machines?
Can you play fruit machines online for free?
Some casinos offer free demo play, after age verification. Since May 2019 UK-licensed operators must verify your age before you can access free-to-play versions of gambling games, so you will need an account even for demos. Demo games use the same maths as the real-money version but no money changes hands. They are useful for learning how holds, nudges or trails work. Our demo slots guide explains how to find them.
Do online fruit machines pay out in bursts like pub machines?
Not in the same way. Many pub machines are compensated and can release runs of features as they catch up with their target return. Online fruit slots are random: each spin is independent, so any streak is ordinary variance rather than the game correcting itself. A high-volatility game can still feel streaky. Our explainer on why fruit machines pay out in bursts compares the two models in detail.
What is the best online fruit machine to play?
There is no single best one; it depends on what you want. Fire Joker and Sizzling Hot Deluxe are simple five-line games with medium volatility. Mega Joker has a very high headline return, but only at the top stake in its Supermeter mode. Barcrest games such as Rainbow Riches add bonus features and stake-linked returns. Check each game’s help screen for the current RTP. Our guide on how to choose a slot machine sets out what to compare.
Can I use nudges and holds on online fruit machines?
On some games, yes. Online titles based on British pub machines may offer holds, nudges, feature trails or a hi-lo gamble, while many classic fruit slots have none. Where they appear, the result is still decided by the random number generator, so the buttons help you take a win the game offers but cannot change its RTP. Read the help screen before you start. The hold buttons page explains how holds work on machines.
Is there a maximum stake on online fruit machines?
Yes. Online slots in Great Britain have a maximum stake of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, in force since 9 April 2025, and £2 per spin for players aged 18 to 24, in force since 21 May 2025. Many fruit slots also set their own lower top stake. Pub fruit machines, by contrast, are limited to £1 per game. Our online slot stake limits page covers how casinos apply the rules.
Why can’t I find autoplay or a stop button on online fruit machines?
Because the Gambling Commission banned them for online slots offered in Great Britain from 31 October 2021. Each spin must be started individually, must last at least 2.5 seconds, and you cannot use turbo or slam-stop to see the result sooner. The rules apply to fruit slots as much as video slots. Stopping the reels early never changed the outcome online anyway. See the autoplay ban page for the details.
Are online fruit machine winnings taxed in the UK?
No. UK players do not pay tax on gambling winnings, online or in a pub. The operator pays duty instead: online casino games are subject to Remote Gaming Duty, which rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. That duty is charged on the operator’s profits, not on what you win. Remember that over time the house edge means most players lose more than they win. The slot winnings tax page has more.
Can I play pub fruit machines online for real money?
You can play online versions of many British fruit-machine-style games, but not the actual pub cabinets. Online games are separate products built for the online rules, even when they share a name, theme or maker with a pub machine. They will have their own RTP, features and stake range, shown in the help screen. If a site claims to stream or remotely operate real pub machines, treat it with suspicion. Our online slot machines page covers licensed options.
