Online fruit machine bonus guide

An online fruit machine bonus can mean the bonus features inside a fruit-style slot, such as a feature trail, cash pot or nudges, or a casino offer you play on fruit machine games. This guide covers both: how the in-game bonuses work and what they are worth, how online versions differ from the pub machine, and how to check whether a UK offer can be used on a fruit slot.

Key takeaways

  • In-game fruit machine bonuses (trails, cash pots, nudges, holds) are part of the game’s RTP; they don’t add value on top.
  • Casino offer spins are tied to selected games; check whether any fruit-style slot is on the list.
  • Pub fruit machines are Category C: £1 maximum stake and £100 maximum prize, with no casino-style welcome bonus.
  • Classic fruit slots are often lower volatility, so 10p offer spins tend to produce more frequent small wins. 18+, terms apply.

What an online fruit machine bonus is

In British slang a fruit machine is the reel game in the pub, and online “fruit machines” are slots that copy its look: cherries, lemons, bells, BARs and sevens on three or five reels. When people search for an online fruit machine bonus they usually mean one of two things. Some want to know how the bonus features inside these games work, the trails and cash ladders that pub players know. Others want a casino offer, such as offer spins or a deposit match, that they can use on a fruit-style game.

This page deals with both, in that order. The first half explains features using the pub machine as the reference point; the second half covers offers, their maths and the checks to make. For the background on the format itself, start with our guide to fruit slots online.

Fruit machine bonus features online and in the pub

Online fruit slots borrow features from the pub machine and add their own. The table lists the common ones. Some are only found on land-based machines or on online games built by makers of pub machines; plain online fruit slots often have none of them and rely on paylines alone.

Common fruit machine bonus features
FeatureHow it worksWhere you see it
Feature trailSymbols move you along a board towards cash or feature prizesPub machines; some online fruit machine conversions
Cash potA pot that builds and can be collected or gambledPub machines; online fruit conversions
NudgesMove a reel one position up or down after the spinPub machines; a few online games
HoldsKeep chosen reels in place for the next spinPub machines; a few online games
Hi-lo gambleStake a win on a higher-or-lower guessPub machines; some online slots
Free spinsSpins at no extra stake, triggered by scattersMostly online
Number reelsA reel of numbers that sets moves or prizesPub machines

Our feature pages go into each one: the feature trail, cash pot, nudges, holds and the hi-lo gamble. The fruit machine features guide puts them together in play order.

Are fruit machine bonus features extra value?

No. A bonus feature is a way of delivering part of the game’s return, not money on top of it. If a fruit slot lists 96% RTP, that figure already includes whatever the trail, cash pot or free spins pay on average. A game with lots of features doesn’t return more because of them; it spreads the same return across different events.

Pub machines go one step further. Many are described as compensated: the machine’s software keeps track of how much it has paid against what it has taken and adjusts towards its target percentage over a cycle. That is why pub players talk about machines “paying out in bursts”. Online slots are not compensated: each spin is independent and drawn by the random number generator. Our page on compensated fruit machines explains the difference.

Using a nudge or hold well on a pub machine can stop you missing a win the machine has already offered, but no technique beats the machine’s built-in payout percentage. Online, stopping reels early changes nothing.

Using a casino offer on fruit slots: the maths

Casino offer spins are valued at their stake, and the three free spins offers we list all use 10p spins. A batch of 100 spins is therefore £10 of play. On a 96.15% game such as Fire Joker the long-run average return is about £9.62; on a 95.66% game about £9.57. Medium-volatility fruit slots tend to pay smaller amounts more often than high-volatility video slots, so the result of a short batch usually sits closer to that average, though nothing is fixed.

10p offer spins on fruit slots: average return by RTP
SpinsStake valueAt 95.66% RTPAt 96.15% RTP
50 (one Ladbrokes day)£5£4.78£4.81
80 (PlayOJO offer size)£8£7.65£7.69
100 (Coral offer size)£10£9.57£9.62

Those rows are illustrations only: offer spins can only be played on the games the terms name, and PlayOJO’s spins are on Big Bass Bonanza, not a fruit slot. Max win also matters at 10p. Fire Joker’s 800x top win is £80 at 10p; Sizzling Hot Deluxe’s 5,000x is £500. Our 10p free spins page has more spin-value sums.

How the fruit machine bonus developed

Fruit symbols arrived on American machines in the early twentieth century, and British fruit machines later grew their own bonus features: holds, nudges and then the feature boards and cash ladders that set UK machines apart. Electrocoin’s Bar-X (opens in a new tab), created in 1981, is one of the best-known British machines of the era. Dransfield Novelty Co of Leeds has claimed to have originated the nudge, a company claim reported in 2019.

Fruit machine bonus myths, online and in the pub

  • Myth: an online fruit slot that hasn’t paid is ready to. Online games aren’t compensated and have no memory between spins.
  • Myth: a pub machine that just paid a jackpot is now “empty”. A compensated machine works towards a percentage over a long cycle; nobody watching can know where it is in that cycle, and the percentage stays below 100%.
  • Myth: taking every gamble increases what you win. A gamble feature can only redistribute the game’s return; it never adds value to it.
  • Myth: a 10p offer spin plays a different version of the game. The casino’s chosen RTP version applies to cash and offer spins alike.

How to check an online fruit machine bonus before you claim

  1. Decide whether you want in-game features (read the game’s help screen) or a casino offer (read the promotion terms).
  2. For an offer, open the full terms and find the eligible games list.
  3. Search the list for fruit-style titles; if none are named, the spins can’t be used on them.
  4. Check spin value, expiry and whether winnings are cash or bonus funds with wagering (capped at 10x since 19 January 2026).
  5. Check the excluded payment methods, which include several e-wallets and prepaid cards at our partners.
  6. Set a deposit limit before your first deposit; casinos must prompt you to since 31 October 2025.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bonus on a fruit machine?

A bonus on a fruit machine is a feature that pays outside the normal line wins, such as a feature trail, cash pot, number reel or set of free spins. On pub machines the trail is the classic version: symbols move you round a board towards cash prizes or extra features. These bonuses are part of the machine’s payout percentage, not extra money on top. Online fruit slots may copy them or use simple free spins instead. Our how to play fruit machines guide explains each feature in order.

Can I use a casino bonus on online fruit machines?

You can only use a casino bonus on an online fruit machine if the offer’s terms allow that game. Free spins offers are usually limited to a short list of selected games, and the list may not include any fruit-style title. Deposit-match bonuses give more choice, though some games may be excluded or count less towards wagering. None of our partner offers is aimed at fruit machines, so read the eligible games section and then search the lobby. Our how to claim free spins guide walks through the checks.

Do pub fruit machines have bonuses or free spins offers?

In the pub, a fruit machine has in-game bonus features but no casino-style welcome offers. A pub machine is a Category C gaming machine with a £1 maximum stake and a £100 maximum prize, and its features, such as the trail, holds and nudges, sit inside those limits. You must be 18 or over to play one. Pubs don’t run deposit bonuses or offer spins on their machines. Our pub slot machines page explains what pubs are allowed and how many machines they can have.

Are online fruit machines the same as pub fruit machines?

Online fruit machines look like pub machines but work differently. Most online versions are not compensated, so every spin is independent, while many pub machines track their payouts over a cycle. Online slots can take up to £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over, or £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds, against £1 on a pub machine, and their prizes are not capped by a category. Holds and nudges are rarer online. Our page on the difference between slots and fruit machines goes into detail.

What is the best online fruit machine for a bonus?

There is no single best fruit machine for a bonus, because the casino’s eligible games list decides where you can use it. Among fruit-style games in our facts, Fire Joker lists 96.15% RTP and Sizzling Hot Deluxe 95.66%, both medium volatility, which suits small offer spins that you want to last. Mega Joker can reach up to 99% only at its top stake with the Supermeter, so it suits higher stakes rather than 10p spins. Our high RTP slot machines page explains how to compare figures.

Do nudges and holds improve your chances online?

Nudges and holds on an online slot don’t change the game’s overall return, because their use is already built into the published RTP. On pub machines, using an offered nudge or hold correctly can stop you missing a win the machine has made available, but it can’t beat the machine’s payout percentage. Online, the outcome is set by the random number generator before the reels stop, and stopping early isn’t allowed in the UK anyway. Our how to use nudges guide explains what a nudge really does.

How much does a fruit machine pay out?

A pub fruit machine must display a theoretical target return, but the law sets no minimum percentage, so the figure varies by machine and is shown on the machine’s label. Online fruit slots in our facts list between 95% and 96.15% for standard play, with Mega Joker quoting up to 99% at its top stake. Whatever the figure, it is a long-run average and losses are likely over time. See how much does a fruit machine pay out for how to read the label.

Are fruit machine free spins really free?

Fruit machine free spins are free only once you have earned them. In-game free spins are triggered during paid play at your stake, and casino offer spins come after a qualifying deposit or bet, such as betting £10 on slots for Coral’s 100 spins at 10p each. Demo versions are free demo play, after age verification, and pay nothing out. Offer spins also expire, for example within 7 days at Coral and Ladbrokes. Our free spins on slots page explains every condition attached to offer spins.

Can under-18s play online fruit machines?

No. Every online slot, fruit-style or not, is for adults only, and UK-licensed casinos must verify your age and identity before you can deposit or play, including free demo games. Fruit machines in pubs are Category C and are also 18+. The only machines without a statutory age limit are Category D low-stake machines, and the industry has applied a voluntary 18+ policy to cash-paying ones since 2021. Our page on how old you have to be to play slot machines has the details.

Is a feature trail on an online fruit machine random?

Yes. On an online fruit slot every result on the feature trail, including how far you move and what prize you land on, comes from the random number generator, and any choice you make is already priced into the game’s RTP. Pub machines can behave differently because many are compensated, but you can’t see the machine’s position in its cycle, so you can’t use that to your advantage. Our feature trail page explains how boards are built.
