Free spins on slots explained

Free spins on slots come in two forms: a bonus round built into the game, and casino offers that give you a set number of spins at a fixed stake, usually after you deposit or bet. This page explains both, shows what a pack of spins is worth in pounds, and sets out the UK rules that now shape every offer.

Key takeaways

  • A promotional free spin has a fixed value set by the casino, typically 10p, and you cannot change the stake.
  • Face value is spins × spin value: 100 spins at 10p is £10 of play, and the long-run average return is a little under that.
  • Since 19 January 2026, UK bonus wagering is capped at 10x; all three spin offers listed here have no wagering at all.
  • Every offer here needs a qualifying deposit or bet, is 18+ and comes with terms on games, expiry and payment methods.

Free spins on slots: the feature and the offer

The phrase covers two quite different things, and mixing them up causes most of the confusion people bring to search engines. The first is the in-game feature: a round inside the slot itself, usually started by landing three or more scatter symbols, in which the reels spin without taking anything further from your balance. The stake for those spins is whatever you were betting when the round began. Our free spins feature explainer covers how those rounds are built, and how free spins work on slot machines answers the common questions about them.

The second meaning is the promotional free spin. A casino credits a number of spins to your account, each one locked to a set value and usually to a short list of games. You did not choose the stake and you did not pay for each spin directly, but you almost always had to deposit or bet to receive them. These promotional spins are what the rest of this page is about, because they are the ones with terms, conditions and a value you can work out in pounds.

How promotional free spins on slots work

Behind the screen, a promotional spin is an ordinary paid spin that the casino funds instead of you. The slot's random number generator picks the result in exactly the same way, the paytable is the same and the RTP is whatever version that casino runs. Nothing about the spin is weaker or stronger because it came from a promotion.

What changes is the wrapper around it. The casino decides the spin value, which games accept the spins, how long you have to use them and what happens to anything they return. On a 10-payline game such as Big Bass Bonanza, a 10p spin is a 1p line bet on each of the ten lines; you cannot raise it to chase a bigger payout and you cannot lower it to stretch the spins further.

  1. You meet the trigger condition, for example betting £10 on slots or making a first deposit of £10 or more.
  2. The casino credits the spins, sometimes with a short window in which you must accept them.
  3. You open one of the named games; the spins load at the fixed value instead of your own stake.
  4. Each spin plays out normally, with the UK minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin and no autoplay.
  5. Anything you win is added to your balance as cash or bonus money, according to the terms.
  6. Unused spins disappear when the validity period runs out.

What a pack of free spins is really worth

Two numbers matter: face value and expected return. Face value is simply spins multiplied by spin value. Expected return is face value multiplied by the game's RTP, which tells you what the spins pay back on average over a very large number of identical packs. It is not a forecast for your own pack, which could return nothing or far more than average.

Face value and long-run average return of common spin packs
SpinsSpin valueFace valueAverage return at 96% RTP
5010p£5£4.80
8010p£8£7.68
10010p£10£9.60
50010p£50£48
10020p£20£19.20

The averages hide a wide spread. On a high-volatility slot, most packs return less than face value and a few return much more; the occasional large result pulls the average up. On a low-volatility game the results bunch closer to the average. That is why two people claiming the same 100 spins can end up with £2 and £40 respectively and both be seeing normal behaviour.

Spin values and RTP figures above are illustrative. Check the offer terms for the real spin value and open the game's help screen for the RTP the casino actually runs.

The cost of qualifying for free spins on slots

None of our partner offers is a no-deposit deal, so the honest sum includes what you stake to qualify. If an offer asks you to bet £10 on slots and you play a game with 96% RTP, the long-run average cost of that £10 is 40p. Some sessions lose the whole £10; some finish ahead. Adding the qualifying stake to the value of the spins gives a truer picture than the headline number alone.

There is also the cost of time. With the 2.5-second minimum spin time, 100 spins take at least four minutes and ten seconds of play, and the qualifying £10 at 10p a spin is another hundred spins on top. Treat both as part of an entertainment budget, decided before you start, rather than as a route to profit. Our slot budget planner shows how to set that figure.

UK rules that shape free spins on slots

Several Gambling Commission rules sit behind every free spins offer you see on a UK-licensed site. The most recent is the wagering cap: since 19 January 2026, the Commission's rewards and bonuses code (opens in a new tab) stops operators asking you to play bonus funds through more than ten times, and a single promotion may no longer mix products such as betting and casino. Our page on the 10x wagering cap works through examples.

  • Age and identity checks must be completed before you can deposit or play, including with a bonus or free spins.
  • Credit cards cannot be used to gamble in Great Britain (since 14 April 2020), so spins cannot be funded on credit.
  • Stake limits of £5 per spin (25 and over) and £2 per spin (18 to 24) apply to your own spins; a 10p promotional spin sits well inside both.
  • Slot design rules since 31 October 2021 apply to promotional spins too: no autoplay, no turbo and no celebrating a return that is equal to or less than the stake.

Advertising rules matter as well. The ASA's guidance on significant conditions in promotions (opens in a new tab) expects the key terms, such as the deposit needed and the spin value, to appear alongside the offer itself rather than only in the small print.

Types of free spins offers on UK slot sites

Offers differ mainly in what triggers them and how the spins arrive. Knowing the type tells you which questions to ask before you sign up.

Common structures for free spins on slots

Bet and getStake a set amount on slotsWhich games count towards the qualifying bet
Deposit and getFirst deposit above a minimumExcluded payment methods, minimum deposit
Daily dripSpins released in batches over several daysDaily claim deadline and validity of each batch

No depositRegistration onlyNone of our partners currently offers this

Our partners cover the first four. Coral's bet £10 and get free spins structure, Ladbrokes' batch-a-day release and PlayOJO's first-deposit spins are compared later on this page.

Free spins terms to read before you claim

The terms decide whether an offer suits you far more than the number of spins in the headline. Five clauses do most of the work.

  • Payment exclusions. E-wallets and prepaid cards are commonly excluded from welcome offers; both Coral and Ladbrokes list several.
  • Acceptance window. Some spins must be accepted within a set time, such as Coral's 48 hours.
  • Validity. Spins usually expire a few days after they are credited; seven days is common among our partners.
  • Game list. "Selected games" means exactly that; check the list before you assume a favourite is included.
  • Winnings. Whether they arrive as cash or as bonus money with wagering attached.

Free spins myths that need retiring

"Casinos make promotional spins lose." Licensed games use the same certified RNG whether the spin is paid or promotional; the testing regime checks the game, not the source of the stake.

"Use the spins straight away, while the game is warm." No slot warms up or cools down. Every spin is independent, as our page on slot machine myths explains.

"More spins always means a better offer." Not if the spins arrive in batches you have to claim daily, if several are lower value, or if winnings carry wagering. Compare face value and conditions, not headcount.

Comparing three free spins offers side by side

All three partner offers below use 10p spins and none puts wagering on spin winnings. They differ in trigger, delivery and the games you can use them on. Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited, part of Entain, so check each brand's terms before assuming you can open new accounts at both.

Keeping free spins in proportion

Promotional spins are a small extra on top of money you have chosen to spend, and the house edge still applies to everything you stake afterwards. Set a deposit limit at sign-up (operators must prompt you to do so before your first deposit since 31 October 2025), use reality checks, and walk away when the spins are gone if that was the plan. Our guide to slot safer gambling tools shows where to find each control.

If gambling stops feeling like entertainment, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24 hours a day, run by GamCare (opens in a new tab). GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) blocks you from every GB-licensed gambling site for a period you choose, and our safer gambling page lists further support.

Where to play with free spins on slots

The offers below are the only ones we list, and all three involve free spins on slots with no wagering on spin winnings. Coral gives 100 spins at 10p when you deposit and bet £10 on slots between 1 October 2026 and 1 February 2027; Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards don't qualify. Ladbrokes releases 50 spins a day for ten days after you deposit and spend £10, with PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill, Moneybookers and prepaid card deposits excluded. PlayOJO gives 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza for a first deposit of £10 or more, excluding Northern Ireland.

Apart from PlayOJO's spins, which are tied to Big Bass Bonanza, the games your spins can be used on are chosen by the casino and can change, so search the lobby and read the current list. All offers are for new customers aged 18+, and terms apply. For more ways to compare, see the offers hub and our list of all five partner casinos.

Frequently asked questions

What are free spins on slots?

Free spins on slots are either a bonus round inside the game or spins a casino credits to your account as a promotion. In-game free spins are triggered by symbols such as scatters and use the stake you were already playing. Promotional spins come with a fixed value, often 10p, and are usually limited to named games and a validity period. You normally have to deposit or bet to receive promotional spins. Our free spins feature page explains the in-game version, and how to claim free spins covers the promotional kind step by step.

Are free spins on slots really free?

Promotional free spins usually aren't free in the everyday sense, because you have to deposit or bet to receive them. Each spin is funded by the casino once you qualify, but the qualifying stake is your own money and carries the normal house edge. On a 96% RTP game, betting £10 to qualify costs 40p on average over the long run, although any single session can lose the full £10. That is why we always show the condition next to the word free. Our guide to deposit £10 get free spins offers works through the full cost.

How much are 100 free spins worth?

One hundred free spins at 10p each have a face value of £10. The long-run average return is face value multiplied by the game's RTP, so at 96% the spins pay back about £9.60 on average across many identical packs. Your own pack could return nothing or several times that, depending on the game's volatility and luck. Spin value is the figure to check: 100 spins at 20p would be worth twice as much. Our 100 free spins page covers this size of offer in detail, including Coral's current deal.

Can I choose the stake on free spins?

No, promotional free spins are locked to the value the casino sets, and you cannot raise or lower it. If the terms say 10p, every spin plays at 10p whatever stake you normally use. On a ten-line slot that means 1p per line. The fixed value also stops you spreading the pack's face value across more or fewer spins. If you want to understand how total bet and line bet relate, see our glossary entries for total bet and coin value, which explain how stakes are built on most online slots.

Do free spins winnings have wagering in the UK?

They can, but since 19 January 2026 any wagering on bonus funds is capped at 10x by the Gambling Commission. Before the cap, requirements of 35x or more were common. All three free spins offers we list (Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO) state no wagering on spin winnings, so whatever the spins return can be withdrawn subject to the casino's normal checks. Other casinos may still attach wagering up to the cap. The no wagering free spins guide compares paid-as-cash and wagered winnings with worked numbers.

Do free spins have a lower chance of winning?

No, a promotional spin uses the same random number generator, paytable and RTP setting as a paid spin on the same game at the same casino. The game cannot tell whether the stake came from a promotion or your balance. What can differ is which RTP version a casino has chosen to run, because many slots are supplied with several settings. That applies to all spins on that site, not just promotional ones. The guide to slot RTP variants explains why, and are slot machines rigged covers testing.

What happens to free spins I don't use?

Unused free spins are removed when their validity period ends, and they are not replaced or converted into cash. Coral's spins must be accepted within 48 hours and used within seven days; Ladbrokes' daily batches each last seven days; check PlayOJO's terms for its window. There is no penalty beyond losing the spins themselves. If you know you won't play within the period, it is simpler not to claim. See free spins expiry for the timings and what usually counts as using a spin.

Can I get free spins on slots without depositing?

Some UK casinos run no-deposit free spins, but none of our five partner casinos offers one at the moment. Every offer we list needs a qualifying deposit or bet. No-deposit offers still require age and identity verification before you can play, and they often come with low spin values, short expiry or wagering up to the 10x cap. Read the terms as carefully as you would for any other offer. Our free spins no deposit page explains how those offers are usually structured and what to check.

Which payment methods don't qualify for free spins?

It depends on the casino, and e-wallets and prepaid cards are the usual exclusions. Coral's offer excludes Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards. Ladbrokes excludes prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers deposits. Credit cards cannot be used to gamble in Great Britain at all. Check the cashier and the offer terms before you deposit, because a deposit through an excluded method usually means no spins. Our pages on Coral payment methods and Ladbrokes payment methods list what each accepts.

Are free spins on slots worth claiming?

They can be worth claiming if you were going to deposit and play anyway, and not worth it if the offer would push you to spend more than you planned. A no-wagering pack of 100 spins at 10p adds around £9.60 of average return to a £10 qualifying bet on a 96% game, which is a real but modest extra. Think about expiry, the game list and the time it takes to use the spins. Our best slot offers UK page compares all five partner offers on cost and conditions.

Can I play free spins in demo mode?

No, promotional free spins are real-money spins and only work in the real-money version of the named games. Demo play is a separate thing: free demo play, after age verification, lets you try a slot with play credits that can't be withdrawn. Demo play is a sensible way to learn a game's features before you use a pack of spins on it. UK rules have required age verification before demo play since May 2019. See our demo slots guide and the page on demo slot age verification.
