How do free spins work on slot machines? Inside a game, free spins are a bonus round, usually started by scatter symbols, that replays the reels at your triggering stake without taking more money. In casino offers, they are prepaid spins of a fixed value, often 10p, on named games, with rules on expiry and winnings. Both are explained below, with the numbers.
In-game free spins are a feature: triggered by symbols, played at the stake you were betting, with no extra cost per spin.
Free spins rounds often use different reels or modifiers, which is why so much of a slot's RTP sits in the bonus.
Casino free spins have a set value: 100 spins at 10p is £10 of play, not £10 of cash.
Since 19 January 2026, any wagering on bonus winnings is capped at 10x in Great Britain.
No free spin changes the house edge; over time, slot play costs money.

How do free spins work on slot machines? Two meanings
The phrase covers two things that work very differently. The first is the free spins feature built into a slot: a bonus round the game awards when certain symbols land, during which the reels spin a set number of times without taking further stakes. The second is a casino promotion that hands you a batch of spins on chosen games, often in return for a deposit or a qualifying bet.
Mixing them up causes most of the confusion. A feature round is part of the game's maths and its RTP. An offer is a marketing incentive with terms attached. This page covers both, and the slot machine questions hub has related answers.

How the free spins feature works inside a slot machine
Most video slots start the round with scatter symbols: three or more anywhere in view is the usual trigger, though some games use bonus symbols on specific reels or a collection meter. The exact rule and the number of spins awarded are printed in the game's paytable.
A base-game spin lands the trigger symbols; any scatter prize is paid.
The game announces the number of free spins, sometimes after a pick or wheel.
Each free spin plays automatically at your triggering stake; your balance is not charged.
Wins build up in a feature total, often boosted by modifiers.
Landing the trigger again may add spins (a retrigger).
When the spins run out, the total is added to your balance and the base game returns.
Because the stake is locked at the triggering level, a round started on a 20p spin pays in 20p terms throughout. Changing your stake afterwards has no effect on a feature already under way.
What changes on the reels during free spins
Free spins rarely just repeat the base game. Developers usually switch to different reel strips with more wilds or fewer low-paying symbols, or add a modifier. That is why a large slice of a high-volatility slot's return arrives through the feature, and why long base-game stretches can feel thin.
Common free spins modifiers and slots that use them
Not every popular slot has free spins. Starburst, with its listed low volatility and 500x max win, relies on expanding wilds with respins instead, which spreads its returns more evenly. Additional rounds can also come from a free spins retrigger, and the help screen says whether there is a cap.
How casino free spins offers work on slot machines
A promotional spin is a prepaid stake. The casino sets the value (10p is common), names the eligible games, and gives you a window to claim and use the spins. Winnings then go to your cash balance or, where wagering applies, to bonus funds you must play through before withdrawing. Our explainer on 10p free spins breaks down the value, and free spins on slots covers the wider market.
Take 100 offer spins at 10p. That is £10 of stakes, not £10 of cash. If the selected game returns 96% over the long run, the average result is £9.60, but a single batch of 100 spins can return nothing or several times that. PlayOJO's 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza are £8 of play; at the game's listed 96.71% RTP the long-run average is about £7.74.

The last column shows why no-wagering offers are easier to judge: what you win is cash. With wagering, every pound of winnings needs up to £10 more of slot play, and the house edge applies to that play as well. Averages describe millions of spins; your own batch will differ, often by a lot.
Do fruit machines and land-based slot machines have free spins?
Traditional UK pub fruit machines grew up with different bonus tools: holds, nudges and a feature trail that moves you round a board towards cash or extra features. Many modern video cabinets in casinos, arcades and betting shops include free-game rounds that work like the online feature, played at the stake that triggered them. There is no land-based equivalent of a casino offer spin: a machine in a pub can't give you prepaid spins, and Categories B and C are for over-18s only.
UK rules that affect free spins on online slots
Stake limits: a free spins round plays at your triggering stake, which can't exceed £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, or £2 for 18–24s, as the Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) explains.
No buying the feature: slots supplied to Great Britain don't offer a bonus buy, so free spins must be triggered on the reels. See bonus buy in the UK.
Age checks first: demo versions and offers are only available after age verification.
No credit cards: deposits that qualify for spins can't be made by credit card, a ban in force since 14 April 2020.
No autoplay: base-game spins must be started one by one; the feature round itself plays out on its own.
Free spins myths and facts
Myth: a game is due to trigger free spins after a long dry run. Each spin is independent, so the chance on the next spin is the same as on any other. Myth: offer spins run on a weaker version of the game. Some slots exist in several RTP variants, and the casino chooses which to run, so check the help screen; but the spins use whatever version that casino offers to everyone. Fact: a bigger stake makes free spins pay more in pounds, because wins scale with the stake, but it doesn't usually make them come round more often.

Frequently asked questions
Do free spins use your own money?
A feature round never charges your balance; the spins are paid for by the base-game spin that triggered them, and they play at that same stake. Casino offer spins also don't deduct anything when you spin, but you usually had to deposit or bet first to receive them, so they aren't without cost. Any winnings from either kind are added to your balance, either as cash or as bonus funds if wagering applies. Our guide to no-wagering free spins explains which kind pays straight into cash.
What triggers free spins on a slot machine?
Most often three or more scatter symbols landing anywhere on the reels, though the rule differs by game. Some slots need bonus symbols on particular reels, some fill a meter over several spins, and a few award free spins at random after any spin. The paytable states the exact trigger and how many spins each combination gives. Every trigger is decided by the random number generator, so there is no pattern to spot. Our answer on what triggers a bonus round goes through every trigger type.
Are free spins wins paid in real money?
Wins from an in-game free spins round are always real money in a real-money game; they are added to your balance when the round ends. With casino offer spins, it depends on the terms. No-wagering offers pay winnings as cash you can withdraw. Others credit bonus funds with a wagering requirement, now capped at 10x in Great Britain, plus a time limit and sometimes a maximum stake. Read our page on free spins winnings for how each type is credited.
How long do casino free spins last?
Each offer sets its own expiry. Our partners' current deals show the range: Coral gives 48 hours to accept 100 spins and 7 days to use them; Ladbrokes asks you to claim each daily batch of 50 before 23:59 and use it within 7 days. Unused spins are lost when they expire, so claim only what you plan to use. In-game free spins have no expiry at all because the round plays out immediately. Our explainer on free spins expiry has more examples.
Can you get free spins without a deposit in the UK?
Some UK casinos run no-deposit spins, but none of our five partners currently offers one, and all of their free spins deals need a deposit or a qualifying bet first. Any genuine no-deposit offer still requires age and identity verification before you can play, and its winnings are often capped. Treat any site promising spins with no checks at all with caution, as it may not hold a UK licence. Our page on free spins with no deposit explains what to look for.
Why does my free spins round pay so little sometimes?
Because the round's outcome is as random as any other spin, and high-volatility games spread their returns unevenly. Many rounds pay a modest amount while a few pay a lot, and the average across all of them makes up the slot's RTP. A round worth 3x your stake and one worth 300x are both normal results for the same game. Modifiers raise the ceiling but don't promise a good round. Our answer on how many spins until a bonus explains the probability behind the wait.
Is it better to take free spins or bonus cash?
It depends on the terms rather than the label. Free spins fix the spin value and the game, which keeps things simple, and no-wagering spins pay cash. Bonus cash lets you choose games and stakes, within a maximum bet, but usually carries wagering, now capped at 10x, which adds play and therefore expected cost. Compare the amount of real play each offer gives and how winnings are paid. Our side-by-side of free spins versus bonus cash works through examples.
Can I choose which slot to use casino free spins on?
Usually not. Offers name the selected games, and spins only work on those. PlayOJO's welcome spins, for example, are played on Big Bass Bonanza, while Coral and Ladbrokes credit theirs to selected games listed in the terms, which can change. If you open a different slot, the spins won't be applied. Check the offer page or the promotions area of your account to see where the spins are waiting. Our guide on how to claim free spins shows the usual steps.
Do free spins rounds use a different RTP?
The feature round is part of the slot's overall RTP rather than a separate figure, but its reels often differ from the base game. Developers frequently put more wilds or bigger symbols on the free spins reels, so a larger share of the total return arrives during the bonus. That is one reason high-volatility games feel quiet between features. A few help screens break the RTP into base game and feature. Our guide to scatter symbols covers how the trigger symbols fit into that maths.
Can free spins be retriggered?
Often, yes. Many slots award extra spins if the trigger symbols land again during the round, and some add a bonus such as a higher multiplier when that happens. Others cap the total number of spins or don't allow retriggers at all. The paytable spells out which applies. A retrigger is decided by the random number generator like everything else, so it can't be planned for. Our feature page on free spins retriggers shows how different games handle extra spins.
