Slot machine questions answered

Slot machine questions answered plainly

This hub collects the slot machine questions people ask most, each answered in its first sentence and then explained with numbers, examples and the UK rules that apply. Some are about mechanics (how does a machine decide who wins?), some about money (how long does £100 last?), some about the law (how old do you have to be?), and some about history (why are there cherries on the reels?). Online slots and the machines in pubs, arcades and casinos are both covered, because the honest answer often differs between them.

Every answer is written from published sources: developers’ game rules, the Gambling Commission’s technical standards and guidance, and legislation. If a figure cannot be confirmed, the answer says so and tells you where to check, usually the game’s help screen or the label on the machine. Nothing here promises a way to win, because slots are designed to return less than they take over time.

Questions also cross-link. A question about near misses leads naturally to one about whether machines remember past spins, and both lead back to how random number generators work. Follow the links at the end of each answer if you want the longer explanation behind a short reply.

How to find your answer among the slot machine questions

The cards below are sorted into six themes. Scan the theme that fits your question, or use the quick answers further down this page for the questions that come up most. If a term in an answer is unfamiliar, the glossary has a short definition, and the How slot machines work section explains the machinery in depth.

Many questions have a different answer online and in a venue, so check which one a page is describing. A question such as how much a slot pays out has one answer for an online game, where the help screen states a theoretical return, and another for a pub machine, where the label shows a target and the machine may be compensated. Pages that cover both say so near the top and split the answer into two parts.

Quick answers to common slot machine questions

Short versions of the answers people look for most. Each one links to the full page, which explains the reasoning and the exceptions.

Short answers leave things out. The full pages explain the exceptions, such as fruit machines that offer holds and nudges, or games whose bonus features change how stakes are counted. They also show the arithmetic, so you can apply the same reasoning to a game we have not covered.

Myths behind many slot machine questions

A large share of the questions we answer start from a belief that sounds reasonable but is wrong. Four come up again and again.

• A machine is due to pay. Online slots decide each spin independently, so a long losing run does not make a win more likely. Our page on the gambler’s fallacy explains why.
• A near miss means a win was close. The result is fixed before the reels stop, and two jackpot symbols with a third just off the line are no nearer a win. See near misses.
• Some machines are loose or hot. Every licensed game runs to a set target return; there is no hidden setting that changes through the day. Read loose and tight slot machines.
• Stopping the reels takes skill. Online it changes nothing, and on fruit machines only an offered hold or nudge gives any real choice. See is stopping the reels a skill.

The Commission’s standard on how online games generate random outcomes (opens in a new tab) also rules out adjusting results to hit a target, which is why online slots cannot be compensated.

Myths last because slots are built to feel eventful. Lights, sounds and close calls make random results seem meaningful, and memorable wins stick in the mind more than the steady run of small losses. Knowing how the result is chosen takes most of the power out of those signals, which is why the mechanism pages and the myth pages link so closely.

Recent UK changes behind new slot machine questions

Rule changes create new questions. Since April 2025 the most common one has been about stake limits: online slots are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over (from 9 April 2025) and £2 for players aged 18 to 24 (from 21 May 2025). Others follow from the 10x bonus wagering cap of 19 January 2026, and from the rule, in force since 31 October 2025, that new online customers are asked to set a financial limit before they first deposit. On the land-based side, the Commission published final gaming machine technical standards on 30 September 2026, with the first part taking effect on 30 March 2027.

Some announced changes are still not law at 21 October 2026, which causes confusion. Debit cards still cannot be used directly on gaming machines, and the planned offence for under-18s playing cash-paying Category D machines has not yet been created. Our page on the maximum stake on a slot machine sets out the current limits for every category, and the rules hub has a page for each change.

When the right answer is to stop

Some questions are really about control: how to stop, how to block sites, how to set a limit. Those answers are practical and free of any promotion. Calls to the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 cost nothing and are answered day and night, GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) blocks every GB-licensed gambling site and app, and the NHS (opens in a new tab) runs gambling clinics you can refer yourself to. Start with how do I stop playing slots or how do I set a limit on slots.

Warning signs include spending more than planned, chasing losses, hiding play from people close to you, or feeling restless when you try to cut down. If any of those sound familiar, the answer to most slot machine questions matters less than taking a break. Online casinos must offer time-outs and deposit limits, and venues can arrange self-exclusion across several premises at once.
