What is a multiplier in slots? It is a feature that multiplies a win by a stated factor, so a 40p win with a 3x multiplier pays £1.20. Multipliers can sit on wild symbols, drop as random symbols, or climb during cascades and free spins, and they are already counted in the game's RTP, so they reshape how wins arrive rather than adding value.
Multipliers live on wilds, random symbols, cascades, free spins counters and grid spots.
Two multipliers may add (2x + 3x = 5x) or multiply (2x × 3x = 6x); the paytable says which.
Big multipliers raise volatility; the game's max win cap still limits the total.
They don't raise the RTP; the maths already includes them.

What is a multiplier in slots? A plain definition
A multiplier is a number, shown as 2x, 5x or 100x, that the game applies to a win before paying it. Some multiply a single line or way, some multiply every win in a tumble sequence, and some multiply the whole total of a free spins round. The important point is what it multiplies: a 10x multiplier on a 5p line win is 50p, while 10x on a £5 total is £50.
Multipliers are one of the most common slot features. This page covers how they work, the main types and the maths. For more quick answers, see the slot machine questions hub.
How a slot multiplier works: a worked example
Say you stake 20p and land a line win the paytable values at 2x your stake, which is 40p. If a 3x multiplier wild is part of that line, the game pays 40p × 3 = £1.20. If the same wild sits elsewhere on the screen and isn't part of the line, it does nothing. Rules like this are why the help screen matters.
The RNG decides the reel result, including any multiplier and its value.
The game finds every winning line, way or cluster.
It checks which wins include a multiplier symbol or fall inside a multiplier phase.
It applies the multiplier (or combined multipliers) to those wins.
It checks the total against the game's max win cap.
Cascade multipliers depend on cascading reels, where winning symbols vanish and new ones fall. Our page on progressive multipliers explains how those counters climb and reset.
Do slot multipliers add or multiply together?
When two or more multipliers apply to the same win, games handle them in one of two ways, and the gap matters. Adding them is gentler; multiplying them can grow very fast.

In many scatter-pays games, the values of random multiplier symbols that land on a winning spin are added together, while wild multipliers on a line are often multiplied. The paytable states the rule for each game.
Multipliers, max wins and UK stake limits
Every slot sets a ceiling on any single spin or round, its max win cap. Multipliers can push a win to that cap but not past it. The table converts listed max wins into pounds at common stakes, including the £2 limit for 18–24s and the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over set out in the Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab).

A max win is reached on a tiny fraction of spins, if ever, during a normal session. Treat it as the top of the range, not a target.
How multipliers affect volatility and RTP
Multipliers don't add money to a game. The developer sets the RTP for the whole design, multipliers included, so a slot with big multipliers simply pays fewer or smaller wins elsewhere. Gates of Olympus is listed at 96.50% RTP and Gonzo's Quest at 95.97%: multipliers feature heavily in both, yet neither returns more than an ordinary slot.
What multipliers change is volatility. By concentrating value into rare moments where several large factors line up, they widen the gap between a typical session and a lucky one. Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza and Sugar Rush are all listed as high volatility; Gonzo's Quest as medium. Expect long stretches of small results on high-volatility multiplier games, and budget accordingly: 200 spins at 20p is £40 staked whatever the multipliers do.
Multipliers on fruit machines and land-based slots
Traditional pub fruit machines rarely use multipliers in the online sense. The closest feature is the gamble or hi-lo gamble option, which lets you risk a prize for the chance to double it or climb a ladder; that is a choice to stake the win, not a free multiplier, and it can lose the lot. Modern video cabinets in casinos and arcades often include online-style multiplier features, but the machine's category still caps the prize: £100 on a Category C pub machine and £500 on Category B3.
Multiplier myths
‘A high multiplier means the game pays more.’ The RTP is fixed; multipliers shift when wins arrive, not how much the game returns overall.
‘Multipliers build up between sessions.’ Unless the help screen describes a persistent meter, counters reset when the feature ends.
‘Bigger stakes bring bigger multipliers.’ Multiplier values come from the RNG; a bigger stake scales the base win, not the factor.
‘A 100x multiplier landed, so the next one is far off.’ Each spin is independent.
How to check a slot's multiplier rules
Open the paytable or help screen before your first spin.
Find where multipliers appear: on wilds, as symbols, on a counter or grid.
Check whether multipliers apply to a single win or the total.
Look for the rule on combining: added or multiplied.
Note the listed max win and RTP version.
Decide a stake that gives enough spins for a high-volatility game.

Frequently asked questions
What does a 2x multiplier mean on a slot?
It means a win is doubled before it is paid. If a line win would normally pay 50p, a 2x multiplier makes it £1. Whether it doubles one line, one way or the spin's total depends on where the multiplier sits, as described in the paytable. A 2x on a small win is still small, and a doubled win can still be below your stake. The multiplied total can't exceed the slot's cap; our glossary entry on max win explains how that ceiling works.
Which slot has the biggest multipliers?
Multiplier sizes vary by game and version, and many developers list a highest symbol value in the help screen rather than a typical one. Scatter-pays games with random multiplier symbols, such as the Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza families, are known for large values, while cascade games climb more gradually. Bigger multipliers usually come with higher volatility, not better returns. Our comparison of Gates of Olympus vs Sweet Bonanza sets two popular multiplier games side by side.
Are multipliers better in free spins?
Often they are larger or more persistent in free spins, because developers save value for the feature. Some games let multipliers accumulate through the round instead of resetting after each spin, which is why feature rounds produce most of the big results. The base game pays less as a result, so the overall RTP stays the same. Sequels sometimes raise the ceiling: the Gates of Olympus 1000 page shows a listed 15,000x max win against the original's 5,000x.
Do multipliers make a slot high volatility?
They usually push it that way. Multipliers concentrate value into rare moments, so the gap between ordinary and exceptional sessions widens. A game can still be medium volatility if its multipliers are modest or frequent; Gonzo's Quest is listed as medium with cascade multipliers, while Gates of Olympus is listed as high. Check the developer's rating in the help screen. Our guide to high-volatility slot machines explains what that rating means for a budget, with worked examples.
Is the gamble feature a multiplier?
Not really. A gamble feature asks you to risk a win you already have, usually for a chance to double it on a card colour or climb a ladder. If you lose, the win is gone. It doesn't increase the overall return and often keeps it roughly the same or lower. True multipliers apply automatically as part of the game's maths. Our glossary entry on the gamble ladder shows how the fruit machine version works.
Can wild symbols be multipliers?
Yes. Wild multipliers substitute for other symbols and multiply any win they help form, often at 2x or 3x. If two wild multipliers sit on the same line, the game either adds or multiplies their values, depending on its rules. Some games put multipliers only on wilds that land during free spins. A wild multiplier that isn't part of a winning line has no effect. Our page on wild symbols covers the other wild types, including expanding, sticky and walking wilds.
Why did my multiplier land but nothing was paid?
Because a multiplier needs a win to multiply. In many scatter-pays games, multiplier symbols only count if the spin or tumble sequence also produces a winning combination; otherwise they disappear. Wild multipliers likewise only apply to wins they are part of. This is designed in and is not a fault. Check the round history if you think a payment was missed. Our glossary entry on the big win explains the on-screen banners that appear when a multiplied win does land.
Do multipliers change a slot's RTP?
No. The RTP is calculated across everything a slot can do, including multipliers, and certified before release. A game with spectacular multipliers balances them with fewer or smaller wins elsewhere. What can differ is the RTP version a casino runs, which is fixed for that casino and shown in the help screen. Our answer on what a good RTP for a slot is explains how to compare versions and what 96% means in pounds over 100 spins.
Do multipliers reset after free spins?
Usually, yes. Most feature multipliers start at their base value at the beginning of each round and are cleared when it ends. A few slots keep a persistent meter between spins in the base game, which the help screen will describe. Any meter saved between sessions should be stated clearly in the rules. If nothing says it persists, assume it doesn't. Our page on the free spins feature describes how multipliers fit into a typical round, from trigger to final total.
Are multipliers used in 243 ways slots?
Yes, often. Several 243-ways games put multipliers on wilds or apply them during free spins, which can multiply each way in a win. Because a ways win can include several ways at once, a multiplier on a shared wild can apply to all of them. The paytable explains whether it multiplies each way or the total. Our answer on what 243 ways means shows how ways are counted, with a worked example of four winning ways.
