The Sugar Rush slot in plain terms

Sugar Rush is a cluster pays slot machine from Pragmatic Play. Forty-nine symbols, styled as sweets and jelly shapes, fill a seven-by-seven grid. Any group of five or more identical symbols that touch horizontally or vertically is a win. Diagonal contact doesn't count.

The game's identity comes from its multiplier spots. Rather than multipliers dropping in as random symbols, they grow on the grid itself in places where wins keep happening. That gives the game an unusual rhythm, in which a busy area of the grid can become steadily more valuable within a spin.

The bright confectionery theme doesn't change what this is: a real-money gambling game for adults aged 18 and over, with the same house edge as any other slot.

How the Sugar Rush slot machine works

As with every licensed online slot, the random number generator determines the outcome when you press spin, including what drops in after each tumble. The sequence on one paid spin:

  1. Set the stake and press spin; 49 symbols land on the grid.
  2. The game finds any clusters of five or more matching, touching symbols.
  3. Each cluster pays according to its size and symbol type.
  4. Winning symbols are removed, and the position each one occupied is marked.
  5. Symbols above fall down and new ones drop in from the top (a tumble).
  6. If a new winning cluster includes marked spots, those spots gain or double a multiplier.
  7. The tumbles continue until no new clusters form, then the spin ends.

This tumbling system is the same idea as cascading reels. One press can produce a long chain of wins, each counted within the same game cycle.

Sugar Rush multiplier spots explained

The first time a winning symbol is removed from a square, that square is highlighted. The next time a winning symbol explodes on the same square, it becomes a 2x multiplier. Every further win on that square doubles it again, up to a maximum of 128x.

How a Sugar Rush spot grows
Win on the same squareSpot value
1stMarked (no multiplier yet)
2nd2x
3rd4x
4th8x
5th16x
6th32x
7th64x
8th128x (maximum)

When a cluster covers several multiplier spots, their values are added together and the total is applied to that cluster's win. Worked example at 20p a spin: a cluster normally worth 40p covers two spots, one at 4x and one at 8x. The combined 12x turns the 40p into £4.80.

In the base game, the marked spots clear when the spin's tumbles end. That is the biggest difference from the free spins round, and it explains the shape of the game's maths. Doubling multipliers are a type of progressive multiplier.

Sugar Rush free spins: spots that stay

Three or more scatter symbols trigger the free spins, with more scatters awarding more spins. The key change is that marked spots and their multipliers stay on the grid for the whole round instead of clearing after each spin. Squares that win repeatedly across several spins keep doubling.

This is where the 5,000x ceiling becomes reachable. A round in which a few central squares climb to high values early can make later clusters pay many times over. A round in which wins are scattered across the grid may barely build at all. Scatters landing during the round can add more spins; the help screen gives the exact counts for each number of scatters.

Sugar Rush RTP and the cost of play

The published Sugar Rush RTP is 96.50%, a long-run house edge of 3.5%. Pragmatic Play offers casinos more than one RTP setting for many of its games, so check the figure at your casino; the Commission's rules on game descriptions and the likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab) require it to be shown.

Sugar Rush cost per 100 spins at 96.50% RTP
Stake per spinTotal stakedAverage returnedAverage cost
20p£20£19.30£0.70
40p£40£38.60£1.40
£1£100£96.50£3.50
£2£200£193£7
£5£500£482.50£17.50

These are long-run averages. Because so much of the return is held in free spins with sticky multiplier spots, 100 base-game spins often return far less than the table shows, and the occasional round returns far more.

Sugar Rush max win at UK stake limits

The published Sugar Rush max win is 5,000 times the stake:

Sugar Rush max win (5,000x) by stake
Stake per spinMax win
10p£500
20p£1,000
£1£5,000
£2 (limit for ages 18–24)£10,000
£5 (limit for ages 25+)£25,000

The Gambling Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) caps stakes at £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over (since 9 April 2025) and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds (since 21 May 2025). The 5,000x cap is a ceiling in the game's rules; once it is reached, the round ends.

Finding the Sugar Rush RTP in the help screen

  1. Open the game and select the information or menu icon.
  2. Page through the rules, past the paytable and feature descriptions.
  3. Find the line that states the theoretical RTP.
  4. Compare it with 96.50%; a lower number means a lower-paying version.

Our reading slot RTP in the UK guide explains why the same game can show different RTPs in different lobbies.

UK rules that apply to Sugar Rush

Tumbling games can produce many small wins in a row. In Great Britain the Commission's responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab) stops a game celebrating any result that returns no more than the total stake, so a chain of small clusters adding up to less than your bet won't be presented as a win. See our losses disguised as wins rule page.

The same standard, in force since 31 October 2021, removes autoplay and turbo spins and sets a minimum of 2.5 seconds per game cycle. There is also no bonus buy in British versions of the game; outside Britain you may see one, but bonus buy in the UK explains why it doesn't appear here.

Sugar Rush 1000, Sugar Rush Xmas and similar slots

Pragmatic Play has released follow-ups using the same grid:

  • Sugar Rush 1000: stronger multiplier spots, with very high volatility and a 25,000x max win in published figures.
  • Sugar Rush Xmas: a seasonal reskin with its own figures; see its page before assuming anything carries over.

Other sweet-themed or cluster games include Sweet Bonanza, which pays anywhere rather than in clusters (see Sweet Bonanza vs Sugar Rush), and Fruit Party. The history of the mechanic is covered in cluster pays history.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Sugar Rush RTP?

Sugar Rush has a published RTP of 96.50%, which means a long-run house edge of 3.5%. Over millions of spins it returns about £96.50 of every £100 staked to players as a group. Pragmatic Play supplies several RTP versions of many of its games, so check the rules page at your casino before playing. A single session can be very different from the average. Our page on what a good RTP is gives context.

What is the Sugar Rush max win?

The published maximum win on Sugar Rush is 5,000 times the stake. That is £1,000 at 20p a spin, £5,000 at £1, £10,000 at the £2 limit for players aged 18 to 24 and £25,000 at the £5 limit for those aged 25 and over. It typically needs a free spins round where several spots reach high multipliers, which is very rare. The reasons studios set a ceiling are covered on our max win caps page.

How do the multipliers work in Sugar Rush?

Multipliers grow on the grid itself. When a winning symbol is removed from a square, the square is marked. The next win on that square turns it into a 2x multiplier, and each further win there doubles it, up to 128x. If a cluster covers several spots, their values are added together and applied to that win. In the base game spots clear when the spin ends. Our multipliers guide compares this with other multiplier designs.

How do you trigger Sugar Rush free spins?

Land three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the grid. More scatters award more free spins, and further scatters during the round can add spins; the help screen lists the exact numbers. During free spins the marked spots and their multipliers stay in place for the whole round, which is where most of the game's bigger wins come from. You can't buy the round in the UK. Our what triggers a bonus round page explains trigger odds.

Is Sugar Rush high volatility?

Yes, published figures rate Sugar Rush as high volatility. The base game often returns little, while free spins with sticky multiplier spots can pay many times the stake. That means sessions swing a lot, and a budget can run out before the feature lands. If you want steadier play, a lower-volatility slot will usually suit you better. Our guide to slot volatility and budgets shows how to plan for it.

What is the difference between Sugar Rush and Sugar Rush 1000?

Sugar Rush 1000 is a later version with the same 7×7 cluster grid but stronger multiplier spots; the help screen gives their cap. Published figures rate it very high volatility with a 25,000x max win and an RTP of up to 96.53%, with lower versions also available. The original has a 128x spot cap, high volatility and a 5,000x max win. Check the help screen for the exact version. Our Sugar Rush 1000 page covers it.

How do cluster pays work on Sugar Rush?

A cluster is a group of five or more identical symbols that touch each other horizontally or vertically. Diagonal contact doesn't count, and the cluster can be any shape. Bigger clusters pay more, and the paytable lists prizes by symbol and cluster size. After a win, the symbols disappear and new ones tumble in, which can create further clusters on the same spin. Our cluster pays slot machines page explains the mechanic in more depth.

Can I play Sugar Rush for free?

A free demo version is usually available, but in Great Britain you can only play it after age verification, a rule that has applied since May 2019. The demo uses play credits and should behave like the real-money version, so it is a good way to see how multiplier spots build. It won't tell you what will happen in real play. Our demo slots guide explains where demos are offered.

Is Sugar Rush suitable for young people?

No. Sugar Rush is a real-money gambling game for adults aged 18 and over, whatever its bright sweets theme suggests. UK-licensed casinos must verify a customer's age before any play, including free demos, and online slots carry the same house edge and risks whatever their artwork. If you're a parent with concerns, our slot machine FAQs for parents explain the age rules and how to block gambling sites at home.
