Ted slot by Blueprint Gaming

The Ted slot is Blueprint Gaming’s licensed game based on the Ted films: a 5×3, 20-payline slot with a 95.8% RTP. Its value comes from random modifiers that fire when Ted wakes up during the base game and from the Thunder Buddies bonus, where a wheel chooses one of five different bonus features.

What the Ted slot machine is

Ted belongs to the family of branded slot machines built on a film licence. The theme borrows the foul-mouthed teddy bear, his friend John and the films’ running jokes, but underneath, the design follows a pattern that will look familiar to anyone who knows UK pub machines: a plain lines game in which random features drop in without warning, and a bonus that sends you to a board or wheel rather than straight into free spins.

It comes from Blueprint Gaming, the studio behind Fishin’ Frenzy and King Kong Cash, which has made a speciality of licensed and feature-packed titles. Ted later got a Megaways follow-up, Ted Megaways, with a very different maths profile, covered below.

How a spin works on Ted

The reels are five wide and three high, with 20 paylines. Line wins pay left to right from the first reel. The symbols are film characters and props for the higher pays and card ranks for the lower ones, plus a wild and a Thunder Buddies bonus symbol. The paytable in your casino’s copy shows each symbol’s value at your stake.

  1. Set your total stake for all 20 lines. In Great Britain this is capped at £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18–24s.
  2. Press spin. The RNG fixes the result immediately, including whether a random modifier will fire.
  3. If Ted wakes up, one of the modifiers plays out on screen before the result settles.
  4. Line wins pay. Three or more Thunder Buddies bonus symbols start the bonus wheel.

Ted’s random base game modifiers

The base game has a set of random features that can fire on any spin when Ted wakes up. Published descriptions list the following:

Ted base game modifiers and what they do
ModifierWhat happensFeature type
Laser Gun WildsA laser turns random symbols into wildsRandom wilds
Psychedelic Super SpinExtra Ted symbols are added and all transform into the same symbolSymbol transformation

Psychedelic Colossal SpinThree reels merge into one colossal reel for a giant symbolColossal symbols
TV Remote Symbol StreakWinning symbols hold while other positions respin until no new win formsRespins
Psychedelic Bonus BoostBonus symbols are added to improve the chance of Thunder Buddies on that spinBonus helper

Each of these maps onto a feature we explain elsewhere: random wilds, symbol transformation, colossal symbols and respins. Their average value is part of the 95.8% RTP. A modifier firing on one spin says nothing about the next.

Ted bonus: the Thunder Buddies wheel and its five features

Three or more Thunder Buddies bonus symbols start the bonus. A bonus wheel spins first and lands on one of five features. Published sources name and describe them slightly differently, so treat the summary below as a guide and use the game rules for the exact behaviour in your version.

  • Wheel bonus: you pick between options that lead to multipliers, more spins of the wheel or an arrow towards an inner wheel; reaching the centre leads to the Big Money feature.
  • Bar Crawl Bonus: a board-game style trail where you move by picking bottles; stops include cash prizes, multiplier boosts, Big Money counters and an Arrested space that ends the feature.
  • Big Money Bonus: a multiplier carousel spins, then you pick to reveal either another go or a collect.
  • S*Mart Free Spins: a short round of free spins on special reels, with a conveyor belt delivering Ted wilds.
  • Flash Free Spins: free spins with a bonus grid above the reels that awards cash prizes, extra spins and wilds as you climb it, with Big Money at the top.

If you know fruit machines, the Bar Crawl will feel familiar. It is a digital version of the feature trail printed on the glass of a pub machine, where you move along a board towards higher prizes and risk an exit square. The picks are a pick-me bonus presentation: the value is set by the RNG, and the choice is there to make the round feel interactive.

Two of the five outcomes are free spins rounds, so the term Ted free spins can mean either S*Mart Free Spins or Flash Free Spins, depending on where the wheel stops.

Ted RTP and what it costs to play

The Ted RTP is published at 95.8%. Over a very large number of spins that means the game returns £95.80 for every £100 staked and keeps £4.20. It is a little below the 96% figure many players use as a yardstick, and below Ted Megaways’ 96.03%.

Ted average long-run cost per 100 spins at 95.8% RTP
Stake per spinTotal stakedAverage long-run cost
20p£2084p
50p£50£2.10
£1£100£4.20
£2 (18–24 limit)£200£8.40
£5 (25+ limit)£500£21.00

Published sources give conflicting volatility ratings, so we leave it out of the summary box. The structure, with frequent random modifiers and five quite different bonus outcomes, spreads the return across more events than a single big-bonus game, but individual sessions still swing widely. See what is a good RTP for a slot for context.

Ted max win: why we do not quote one

Published figures for the Ted max win disagree with each other: some quote a cap in coins, some a multiple of the stake and some a pound amount, and they do not match. Rather than repeat a number we cannot confirm, we suggest you open the paytable and rules in your casino’s version, which state the maximum exposure for the copy you are playing.

What we can say is how a cap works. If a game’s cap is, say, 1,000× (an illustrative number, not Ted’s), that would be £100 at 10p, £1,000 at £1, £2,000 at the £2 limit for 18–24s and £5,000 at the £5 limit. Our max win entry explains how caps are applied and why rounds stop when one is reached.

For a land-based comparison: a Category C pub machine has a £1 maximum stake and a £100 top prize, and the machines in adult gaming centres and betting shops (Categories B3 and B2) top out at £500. See UK slot machine categories.

The Megaways version has a slightly higher RTP and a far higher published ceiling, which normally means a spikier distribution. The original suits players who want a fixed-line game with frequent small events; the Megaways slot machines version suits those who accept bigger swings for a higher cap.

Is the Ted slot worth playing?

Advantages

  • Six random base game modifiers keep ordinary spins varied
  • Five different bonus outcomes, including two free spins rounds
  • Board-style Bar Crawl will feel familiar to fruit machine players
  • Simple 20-line structure

Drawbacks

  • 95.8% RTP is below many modern slots
  • Published max win figures conflict
  • Bonus outcome is chosen by the wheel, so the round you want may not come
  • Crude humour from the films will not suit everyone

Ted suits adults who like the films and enjoy feature variety more than chasing a single high ceiling. If you prefer a film and TV slot with a better published RTP, compare the alternatives before choosing.

Ted slot myths and facts

  • Ted wakes up more after a run of losses. Fact: modifiers fire at random and each spin is independent; see do slot machines remember past spins.
  • You can steer the wheel by timing your press. Fact: the wheel’s result is decided before it spins.
  • Choosing different bottles in the Bar Crawl changes the result. Fact: the outcome is set by the RNG; picks reveal it.
  • Licensed slots pay less because of the licence fee. Fact: the RTP shown is what the game returns, whatever the studio pays for the brand.

Checking the RTP and playing the Ted demo

Open the game’s menu, choose the help or rules section and scroll to the return-to-player statement. If it differs from 95.8%, note the figure before playing. Our guide to how to find a slot’s RTP explains where it usually sits.

A Ted demo, where available, is free demo play after age verification. Since May 2019, UK operators have had to confirm that players are 18 or over before they can use free-to-play games. A demo is a sensible way to see the modifiers and wheel before you spend money; see our demo slots guide.

UK rules that shape the Ted slot

In Great Britain, slots must run without autoplay, turbo or slam-stop, with at least 2.5 seconds per spin, under rules in force since 31 October 2021. The Gambling Commission’s responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab) sets out those requirements. Stake limits of £5 (25 and over) and £2 (18–24) per spin apply, as described in the Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). UK casinos do not offer a bonus buy. Frequently asked questions

What is the Ted slot RTP?

The published RTP for Ted is 95.8%. Over millions of spins the game keeps about £4.20 of every £100 staked; in any single session the result can be far higher or lower. That is a little below Ted Megaways at 96.03%. Check the help screen in your casino’s version, where the figure is stated in the rules. Our guide on reading slot RTP in the UK explains what the number does and does not tell you.

How do you trigger the Ted bonus?

Land three or more Thunder Buddies bonus symbols in one spin. A wheel then spins and lands on one of five features: a wheel bonus, the Bar Crawl, Big Money, S*Mart Free Spins or Flash Free Spins. The Psychedelic Bonus Boost modifier can add bonus symbols to a spin, but it fires at random, so you cannot trigger it on demand. See what triggers a bonus round for how scatter-style triggers work.

Does Ted have free spins?

Yes, but only as two of the five possible outcomes of the Thunder Buddies wheel. S*Mart Free Spins gives a short round with a conveyor belt of Ted wilds, and Flash Free Spins adds a bonus grid above the reels with prizes, extra spins and wilds. If the wheel lands on one of the other three features, you get a pick or board bonus instead. Our page on how free spins work on slot machines explains free spins generally.

What is the max win on the Ted slot?

We cannot confirm a single figure, because published sources disagree: they quote different multiples, coin amounts and pound caps that do not match. The reliable answer is in your casino’s version of the game, where the rules or paytable state the maximum. Whatever the cap, reaching it would be extremely rare. Our max win glossary entry explains how caps work, and what slot has the biggest max win puts caps in context.

What are the random features on Ted?

When Ted wakes up during the base game, one of several modifiers can fire. Published descriptions list Laser Gun Wilds, which turns symbols wild; a Psychedelic Super Spin that transforms symbols into a match; a beer feature that shuffles symbols into new wins; a Colossal Spin with a giant symbol; a TV Remote Symbol Streak that holds wins and respins; and a Bonus Boost that adds bonus symbols. Our random features page explains how these are built into a game’s maths.

Is Ted the same as Ted Megaways?

No. Both are Blueprint Gaming games based on the Ted films, but Ted uses five reels and 20 paylines with a 95.8% RTP, while Ted Megaways has six reels with up to 117,649 ways, a 96.03% RTP, a medium-high volatility rating and a 50,000× maximum win. The Megaways version is built for bigger swings. If that suits you, see our Ted Megaways page; otherwise the original is the simpler game.

Can I play Ted for free?

Where a demo is offered, you can use free demo play after age verification. Since May 2019, UK-licensed operators have had to verify that you are 18 or over before letting you play free-to-play games. A demo has the same rules and maths as the paid game but uses play credits, so its results do not carry over. It is a good way to see the five bonus features. Our answer to are free slot games the same as real ones explains the differences.

Is the Bar Crawl bonus like a fruit machine feature trail?

Yes, closely. On a pub fruit machine, a feature trail is the board printed on the glass that you move along towards bigger prizes, with exits that end the feature. The Bar Crawl copies that idea on screen: you pick bottles to move, land on prize spaces or Big Money counters and can be sent out by the Arrested space. As on a fruit machine, the outcome is set by the machine, not your picks. Our feature trail page explains the original.

Who makes the Ted slot?

Blueprint Gaming makes Ted. The studio is known for Fishin’ Frenzy, King Kong Cash and a long run of licensed titles based on films and TV shows, and it also produced a Megaways follow-up to Ted. Licensed slots use a brand under agreement with its owner, which is why they can appear and disappear from casinos when agreements change. Our Blueprint Gaming page covers its catalogue, and what is a slot provider explains how studios supply casinos.
