The Rave slot in numbers

The Rave borrows its look from a warehouse party, with smiley-face wilds, strobe-lit characters and a soundtrack to match. Underneath sits one of the plainest grids Nolimit City uses: five reels of three symbols. All of the complexity is layered on top through enhancer cells, x-mechanics and two bonus tiers.

How The Rave slot machine counts 243 ways

A 243-ways slot pays any matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from reel 1, whatever row they sit on. With three positions on each of five reels, the count is 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243. If two of a symbol land on one reel, both count, so a single spin can pay the same symbol several ways at once.

Nolimit City's xWays symbol makes a reel taller by revealing a stack of matching symbols. Say xWays on reel 3 reveals four symbols. The count becomes 3 × 3 × 4 × 3 × 3 = 324 ways. Two xWays symbols revealing four each on reels 2 and 4 would give 3 × 4 × 3 × 4 × 3 = 432. Those numbers are illustrations of the multiplication; the help screen gives the range each xWays symbol can reveal.

  1. Set a stake; the game charges a single total bet per spin.
  2. Spin; the RNG decides every symbol, scatter and enhancer outcome immediately.
  3. If exactly two Drop the Bass scatters appear, their positions become enhancer cells and reveal a bonus symbol.
  4. Any xWays or xSplit symbols resolve, changing reel heights or splitting symbols.
  5. Ways wins are totalled and paid; three or more scatters start free spins.

Drop the Bass scatters and enhancer cells

Scatters can land anywhere in the base game. One alone does nothing; three or more start the bonus. Exactly two is the interesting case: the positions they occupy become enhancer cells, which reveal one of several symbols. According to the help screen these include an xWays symbol, an xSplit wild that splits symbols on its reel, a regular wild or a premium character. That turns a near miss on the bonus into a small base-game boost, which is a sensible design choice but not a sign that the bonus is close; see near misses.

xWaysExpands the reel with a stack of matching symbols
xSplit wildSplits symbols on the reel and acts as a wild

The Rave free spins: Murder on the Dance Floor

Three or four scatters trigger Murder on the Dance Floor. Enhancer cells sit along the bottom of the grid and stay active on every free spin, so the boosts that are occasional in the base game become constant. Above reels 2, 3 and 4 sit symbol multipliers, which activate when character symbols land in enhancer cells; xSplit symbols on those reels push the multipliers up. Random modifiers can also fire. The round length is shown in the help screen and on the trigger.

Scatters keep counting during the round. A further scatter adds an enhancer cell and an extra spin, and reaching five scatters in total upgrades the round to God is a DJ with two more spins. The upgrade path matters, because God is a DJ guarantees a modifier on every spin. For the general structure of tiered bonuses, see free spins.

UK versions have no bonus buy, so both rounds can only be reached through scatters. Nolimit City's xBet option, which raises the stake for a better scatter chance, may also not be present; check the help screen.

God is a DJ: the top bonus and its modifiers

Five scatters in the base game start God is a DJ directly; otherwise you reach it by upgrading. It begins with five enhancer cells and applies one of three modifiers on every spin.

God is a DJ modifiers
ModifierWhat it doesRelated mechanic
MashupTurns all characters on screen into the top-paying characterSymbol upgrades
CrossfaderTurns low-value symbols on reels 2, 3 or 4 into wildsRandom wilds
SidechainLinks two to five reels so they show matching symbolsLinked reels

Each modifier works differently. Mashup concentrates value in one symbol, much like symbol upgrades. Crossfader floods the middle with wilds. Sidechain behaves like linked reels, which can produce full-width wins across many ways at once. Combined with symbol multipliers, these are the route to the top of the payout range.

What extreme volatility means for a session

The Rave is rated extreme, the harshest label most studios use. Practically, the share of RTP paid by ordinary base-game wins is small, and the share paid by rare bonus outcomes is large. Many sessions will end without a bonus, and many bonuses will pay modestly; a few pay a great deal. Our page on volatility explains the idea in full.

How far a fixed budget goes on The Rave
BudgetStakeSpins if nothing is wonLong-run average cost of those spins
£2020p100about 78p
£20£120about 78p
£5050p100about £1.96
£50£225about £1.96

The average cost of the same amount staked is identical whatever the stake. What changes is how many chances you get. Twenty spins at £1 gives far fewer opportunities to see a feature than 100 at 20p, which is why lower stakes suit extreme games better. The table assumes 96.09%; on a lower version the costs rise.

The Rave RTP and max win at UK stakes

The Rave RTP is 96.09% at its published standard setting, a house edge of 3.91%. Because lower settings are available, read the figure at the bottom of the game rules at your casino; the Gambling Commission requires that information to be provided. UK rules that apply to The Rave online slot

The UK version of The Rave plays under the Commission's design rules from 31 October 2021: no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, a minimum 2.5 seconds per spin, no win celebration for a return at or below the stake, and a running net position. The stake limits of £5 (25+) and £2 (18–24) apply from 2025. Operators must also offer reality checks and session time information under the Commission's standard on time requirements and reality checks (opens in a new tab), which is useful on a game designed to keep you waiting for a bonus.

On land, nothing compares. A pub fruit machine is a Category C machine with a £1 maximum stake and £100 top prize; its features are holds, nudges and a feature trail, not multipliers measured in tens of thousands.

The Rave myths and facts

Advantages

  • Fact: two scatters giving an enhancer cell is a designed consolation, not a hint.
  • Fact: modifiers in God is a DJ are decided by the RNG, not by how long the round has run.
  • Fact: the demo uses the same maths as the paid game.

Drawbacks

  • Myth: the bonus is 'due' after a long dry spell.
  • Myth: higher stakes trigger the bonus more often.
  • Myth: quiet times of day make extreme slots pay better; see best time to play.

Who The Rave suits, and playing the demo

The Rave suits adults who enjoy high-variance games, play small stakes and treat every penny as the cost of entertainment. It does not suit anyone hoping to make a balance last a long time or to recover a loss. Free demo play is available after age verification at UK casinos, and it is the best way to see the God is a DJ modifiers in action. More options sit on our slot machines hub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of The Rave slot?

The Rave has a published RTP of 96.09% at its standard setting, which means a long-run house edge of 3.91%, or about £3.91 per £100 staked. Lower settings exist, and the casino chooses which to run, so check the figure in the game rules where you play. On an extreme-volatility game, RTP describes the average over an enormous number of spins and tells you very little about a single session. The page on what a good RTP for a slot is puts 96.09% in context.

What is The Rave max win?

The Rave max win is 41,500 times the stake. That works out at £41,500 at £1 a spin, £83,000 at £2, which is the highest stake allowed for players aged 18–24, and £207,500 at £5, the limit for players aged 25 and over. It is most likely to come from God is a DJ, where modifiers and symbol multipliers combine, and it is very rare. If a round reaches the cap it ends there. Casinos can also set their own payout limits. See the max win glossary entry for how caps work.

How do you get God is a DJ on The Rave?

You get God is a DJ in two ways: land five scatters in the base game, or start Murder on the Dance Floor and collect enough extra scatters during it to reach five in total, which upgrades the round and adds two spins. God is a DJ starts with five enhancer cells and applies Mashup, Crossfader or Sidechain on every spin. There is no way to buy it in the UK. The what triggers a bonus round page explains why trigger chances can't be influenced.

Is there a demo of The Rave?

Yes. Many UK casinos offer free demo play of The Rave, available only after age verification, which has been required since May 2019. The demo shows the same 243-ways grid, enhancer cells and both bonus tiers, using play credits. It is useful for learning what each modifier does, but demo results can't predict paid results, because each spin is random and independent. The are free slot games the same as real ones page explains what demos can and can't show you.

What does extreme volatility mean on The Rave?

Extreme volatility means The Rave pays most of its return through rare, large outcomes, mainly in the bonus, while ordinary spins return little. You should expect long runs without a feature and sessions that end with nothing to show. The flip side is the 41,500× ceiling. Volatility doesn't change the RTP; it changes how unevenly that return is spread. Lower stakes give more spins from a fixed budget, which suits this profile. Our page on what the most volatile slots are compares it with similar games.

What are Drop the Bass scatters?

Drop the Bass scatters are The Rave's scatter symbols. They can land anywhere, and three or more trigger free spins. When exactly two land, the positions they occupy turn into enhancer cells that reveal an xWays symbol, an xSplit wild, a regular wild or a premium character, giving the spin a boost. During free spins, extra scatters add spins and enhancer cells and can upgrade the round. Scatters pay regardless of position, unlike regular symbols. The scatter symbols page explains the general role of scatters.

How many ways does The Rave have?

The Rave has 243 ways on its standard 5×3 grid, because three positions on each of five reels gives 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243. Any matching symbols on adjacent reels from reel 1 pay, regardless of row. xWays symbols can make a reel taller for that spin, which raises the count; one reel of four, for example, gives 324 ways. The figure resets to 243 on the next spin. The explainer on what 243 ways means works through more examples.

Can I use autoplay on The Rave in the UK?

No. Online slots in Great Britain haven't been allowed to offer autoplay since 31 October 2021, and The Rave's UK version follows that rule. Each spin must be started by hand, takes at least 2.5 seconds, and can't be sped up with turbo or slam-stop. Win celebrations for returns that don't exceed your stake are also banned. These rules slow play and help you keep track of spending, but they don't change the game's RTP. The slot game design rules page lists every rule with its date.

Is The Rave slot fair?

Yes, in the regulated sense. At UK-licensed casinos The Rave's random number generator and published return must meet Gambling Commission technical standards, and testing labs check games before release. That doesn't mean it favours the player: at the standard 96.09% setting it keeps about 3.91% of all stakes over the long run, more on lower versions, and its extreme volatility means many sessions end in a loss. No pattern or timing changes those odds. The are slot machines rigged page explains how fairness is checked.
