Random wilds slots

Random wilds slots add wild symbols to the reels without them landing in the normal way: a character, effect or bonus drops extra wilds onto chosen positions, or turns whole reels wild, at random. The surprise is real for you but not for the game, because the outcome is fixed when the spin starts. This guide explains how that works, the maths, the main types and UK examples.

Key takeaways

  • Random wilds are extra wilds placed by a feature, on top of the wilds the reels might land naturally.
  • They can appear as scattered single wilds, whole wild reels or wilds spread by another symbol.
  • The decision is made by the RNG with the rest of the spin; the animation only reveals it.
  • A random wild feature is a share of the RTP, not a bonus on top of it.
  • UK rules mean you trigger every paid spin yourself, at no faster than 2.5 seconds per spin.

What random wilds slots are

In a normal spin, a wild symbol only appears if a reel happens to stop on it. Random wilds bypass the reel strip. Something in the game, usually an animated character or effect, places wilds on selected positions before the reels finish, or turns entire reels wild. Because there is no visible trigger such as scatters, it feels like it comes from nowhere.

Random wilds belong to the broader group of random features, alongside random multipliers, symbol transformations and mystery prizes. They are most common in the base game, where designers use them to break up long runs of quiet spins, but plenty of free spins rounds use them too.

How a random wild is decided before the reels stop

Online slots use a random number generator that produces the full result of a spin, feature and all, when you press spin. The order of events inside the game looks like this:

  1. You press spin; the stake is deducted.
  2. The RNG draws a number that decides whether the random wild feature activates on this spin.
  3. If it does, further draws decide how many wilds (or which reels) and where they go.
  4. The RNG also draws the ordinary reel stops.
  5. The game combines the two, applies the wilds and counts the wins.
  6. Only then does the animation play: the reels spin, the character appears and the wilds drop in.

Steps 2 to 5 happen in a fraction of a second. The 2.5-second minimum game cycle that applies to UK online slots is mostly presentation of a result already settled, which is also why a random wild can’t be ‘caught’ or encouraged by how or when you press anything. Our page on how slot machines decide who wins covers the same process in general.

Types of random wilds in online slots

  • Scattered random wilds: a set number of single wilds land on random positions, often thrown by a character.
  • Random wild reels: one or more whole reels turn wild, which works like several wild reels at once.
  • Raining wilds in free spins: each free spin gets a fresh batch of wilds in new places, rather than a single feature.
  • Spreading or shooting wilds: a special symbol creates wilds along a row, column or path. In Hacksaw Gaming’s 2 Wild 2 Die, revolver symbols shoot multiplier wilds onto the reels (opens in a new tab), and in Beam Boys, Laser Cat wilds spread across rows (opens in a new tab).
  • Random wilds with multipliers: the dropped wilds carry values; see wild multipliers.

Thunderstruck II is the reference design: its Wildstorm feature can strike on any base-game spin and turn several reels fully wild on a 243-ways grid, so a single activation affects every way through those reels. Immortal Romance uses the same idea under the name Wild Desire, alongside its four character free spins rounds.

The Dog House Megaways offers a choice at the start of free spins, and one option drops random wilds onto the reels each spin instead of keeping wilds sticky. Hacksaw Gaming’s 2 Wild 2 Die and Beam Boys are newer takes, where a symbol on the reels creates the extra wilds rather than an off-screen character.

Random wilds and RTP: a worked example

Every feature’s share of the RTP follows one formula: how often it happens multiplied by what it pays on average. Designers use this to balance a game. The figures below are invented to show the method; studios don’t publish feature frequencies.

Illustrative RTP contribution of a random wild feature
Feature frequencyAverage payout when it hitsShare of RTP from the feature
1 in 100 spins5x stake5%
1 in 200 spins20x stake10%
1 in 500 spins50x stake10%
1 in 1,000 spins150x stake15%

If a slot’s total RTP is 96% and the random wild feature supplies 10 points of it, the rest of the game supplies 86. Make the feature rarer and richer and the slot becomes more volatile without the RTP changing at all. This is why two games with identical RTP figures can feel completely different to play.

How often a random wild feature might show up in a session

Using the illustrative 1-in-200 feature from above, the chance of seeing it at least once grows with the number of spins, but never reaches certainty. The table pairs that with what the spins cost at 20p and a 96% RTP.

Illustrative 1-in-200 feature: chance of seeing it, and session cost at 20p
Paid spinsChance of at least one activationStaked at 20pAverage cost at 96% RTP

300About 78%£60£2.40
500About 92%£100£4
1,000About 99%£200£8

Even a feature built to appear once every 200 spins on average misses six sessions in ten that last 100 spins. And seeing it doesn’t mean a profit; many activations pay less than the spins it took to reach them. The bonus trigger odds guide uses the same arithmetic for free spins.

Random wild myths

  • ‘The feature hits more after a long dry spell.’ Each spin’s draw is independent. A long gap doesn’t raise the chance on the next spin.
  • ‘Random wilds that fail to win are rigged to miss.’ Wilds are placed by one draw and the reels by another; sometimes they simply don’t line up with matching symbols. That is part of the RTP calculation.
  • ‘Pressing spin at the right moment triggers it.’ The result is set when the spin starts. Timing makes no difference (is stopping the reels a skill?).
  • ‘Teaser animations mean it was close.’ Some games show build-ups that don’t activate. They carry no information about future spins.

Random wilds and fruit machine random awards

Pub fruit machines have long used random awards: a light runs round the feature trail and lands on a prize, or the machine offers nudges and holds out of the blue. Modern Category C machines (£1 maximum stake, £100 maximum prize, 18+) often add video features, and random wild effects can appear there too.

There is one important difference in history. Some land-based machines have been designed as compensated machines, adjusting what they award to stay near a target payout percentage, whereas online slots draw each spin independently. Either way, the built-in percentage decides the long-run result, and no way of using holds, nudges or timing beats it.

UK rules that apply to random wilds slots

The Gambling Commission’s remote technical standards (opens in a new tab) for slots, in force since 31 October 2021, shape how random wild features can be presented.

  • No autoplay: every paid spin is started by you, however often features fire.
  • At least 2.5 seconds per game cycle, with no turbo or slam-stop, so animations can’t be skipped to speed play up.
  • A random wild that produces a return equal to or less than the stake must not be celebrated as a win (why a win might not celebrate).
  • £5 per spin maximum for players aged 25+, £2 for 18–24s; no feature buy in slots supplied to Great Britain.

Frequently asked questions

What are random wilds in slots?

Random wilds are extra wild symbols that a slot adds to the reels through a feature, rather than wilds landing from the reel strip in the usual way. They might appear as single wilds dropped onto random positions, whole reels turning wild, or wilds spread by another symbol. They can trigger on any spin with no scatter needed. See our random features page for related mechanics.

When is a random wild feature decided?

At the moment the spin starts. The RNG decides whether the feature activates, how many wilds appear and where, and the ordinary reel stops, all before the animation begins. The character or effect you see is a display of a result that is already fixed. That is why timing your press or stopping early can’t influence it. The RNG explainer covers the process.

Which slots have random wilds?

Well-known UK examples include Thunderstruck II, whose Wildstorm feature turns reels wild, and Immortal Romance, with its Wild Desire feature. The Dog House Megaways offers a Raining Wilds free spins option, and Hacksaw Gaming’s 2 Wild 2 Die and Beam Boys create extra wilds from special symbols. Game availability varies by casino. Read our Thunderstruck II page for detail.

Do random wilds make a slot more generous?

No. The feature is part of the slot’s published RTP, not an addition to it. If the feature delivers, say, 10 points of a 96% RTP, the rest of the game delivers 86. What changes is how the return is spread: rarer, richer features raise volatility. Our RTP guide explains why the long-run average is fixed.

Is a random wild feature more likely after many losing spins?

No. Online slots draw every spin independently, so a long run without the feature doesn’t make it more likely on the next spin. Thinking otherwise is the gambler’s fallacy. Some games show a progress meter for other features, and that is different: a meter follows stated rules that the help screen explains, and it is reset or carried over exactly as described. The random draw has no such memory. The gambler’s fallacy page explains the trap.

What is the difference between random wilds and wild reels?

Wild reels are one result a random wild feature can produce: a whole reel turning wild. Random wilds is the wider term, and also covers single wilds scattered across the grid or wilds spread by another symbol. Some wild reels are not random at all, appearing through stacks or expansion instead. See wild reels for that specific feature.

Why did random wilds land and not pay anything?

Because the wilds and the reel symbols are drawn separately, the wilds sometimes fall where they can’t connect matching symbols. A wild on reel 4 does nothing if reels 1 to 3 have no match, for example. Those empty activations are part of the maths that sets the feature’s share of RTP. Our slot paylines guide shows how wins are connected.

Do fruit machines have random wilds?

Some modern video fruit machines include random wild effects, but the traditional pub machine tends to use random nudges, holds and feature trail awards. Category C pub machines are limited to a £1 stake and £100 prize, and you must be 18 or over to play. However the award appears, the machine’s built-in payout percentage still decides the long-run return. See fruit machine features.

Can I play random wilds slots free in the UK?

Yes, as free demo play after age verification. Since May 2019 UK-licensed sites must check you are 18 or over before letting you play any demo. A demo uses the same rules as the real game, so you can watch how a random wild feature looks, though a short demo can’t tell you how often it activates. See the demo slots guide.

Does a bigger stake trigger random wilds more often?

Not in standard modern slots, where feature rules and odds are usually the same at every stake and only the cash value of wins scales up. A few games vary their RTP by stake, and the help screen would say so. Raising your stake raises your cost per spin in direct proportion. Our should you bet max page covers stake choices.
