Wild multipliers in slots

Wild multipliers slots use wild symbols that both substitute for other symbols and multiply any win they help to form, so a 2x wild doubles that line’s payout and a 3x wild triples it. When several multiplier wilds join one win, the game either adds or multiplies their values, and that rule matters enormously. Below are worked pound examples, famous UK games and the effect on volatility.

Key takeaways

  • A wild multiplier applies only to wins the wild is part of, not to every win on the screen.
  • Two or more multiplier wilds on one win are either added (2x + 3x = 5x) or multiplied (2x × 3x = 6x); the help screen says which.
  • Multiplying multipliers escalates fast, which is behind many very high max win figures.
  • Multiplier wilds are paid for within the RTP, typically making a slot more volatile.
  • At UK stake limits, a listed max win is a cap reached very rarely, not a target.

What wild multipliers in slots do

A plain wild symbol completes wins by standing in for other symbols. A multiplier wild does the same job and then scales the result. If a line pays 50p and a 2x wild is part of it, you receive £1. If the same wild sits on a different line that doesn’t win, it does nothing there.

This makes wild multipliers a targeted version of the wider slot multipliers family. A global multiplier, such as one that grows through a free spins round, applies to every win. The wild version applies only where the wild is involved. Our short answer on what a multiplier is in slots covers the general term.

How a wild multiplier is applied to a win

  1. The RNG settles the spin, including where wilds land and which multiplier value each one carries.
  2. The game finds every winning line or way, treating wilds as whatever symbol completes the best combination.
  3. For each win, it lists the multiplier wilds that are part of that particular combination.
  4. It combines those values using the game’s rule (added or multiplied).
  5. The line win is multiplied by the combined value; wins without a multiplier wild are paid normally.
  6. All wins are totalled and added to your balance.

Step 3 is easy to miss. On a 20-line game a single 3x wild might sit on a dozen lines, but only the lines that actually win get tripled. And on ways-to-win games, the multiplier applies to each way that passes through the wild.

Added or multiplied: the rule that changes everything

Take an illustrative 20-line slot at a £1 stake, so 5p per line. Five of a high-paying symbol pays 50 times the line bet, £2.50. Here is what different wild multipliers do to that one line win.

One £2.50 line win with different multiplier wilds (illustrative)
Multiplier wilds on the lineIf values are addedIf values are multiplied
None£2.50£2.50
One 2x£5 (2x)£5 (2x)
2x and 3x£12.50 (5x)£15 (6x)
3x and 3x£15 (6x)£22.50 (9x)
2x, 3x and 5x£25 (10x)£75 (30x)
3x, 3x and 3x£22.50 (9x)£67.50 (27x)

With one wild the rule doesn’t matter. With three, multiplying can triple the result compared with adding. That escalation is how many games reach very large max win figures: several multiplier wilds on one top-symbol line can stack into thousands of times the stake, which is why the game also needs a max win cap.

The pay values above are invented for the example. Every slot’s paytable sets its own line pays, and the help screen states how multiplier wilds combine.

The fixed 2x wild is the oldest form. Thunderstruck, Cleopatra and Dolphin’s Pearl Deluxe all double any win their wild helps to form, a simple rule carried over from land-based design. Raging Rhino moved the idea into free spins on a 4,096-ways grid, where every wild carries a 2x or 3x value.

Modern games build whole bonuses around it. The Dog House uses 2x or 3x wilds on reels 2 to 4 that become sticky in free spins, while Gold Blitz Extreme (opens in a new tab) offers a free spins choice built on wild multipliers and Buffalo Blitz II (opens in a new tab) combines them with reel expansion. Playtech’s Age of the Gods: God of Storms has a moving wild whose multiplier rises by one at each step, from 1x up to 5x.

Wild multiplier slots: listed max win at UK stake limits

The maximum win is a cap, expressed as a multiple of the stake. It is reached extremely rarely, and many players never see anything close. The table simply converts the listed figure into pounds at common stakes, including the £2 limit for players aged 18–24 and the £5 limit for those 25 and over.

Listed maximum wins converted to pounds

The Dog House (6,750x)£675£6,750£13,500£33,750

2 Wild 2 Die (15,000x)£1,500£15,000£30,000£75,000

The same games average a loss over time. At a 96% RTP, 500 spins at £1 means £500 staked and an average cost of £20; the max win is part of what funds that average for the rare player who hits it, not a realistic expectation.

Why wild multipliers raise volatility

A multiplier makes rare combinations much more valuable without making them more frequent. To keep the RTP fixed, the designer pays for those boosted wins by trimming ordinary pays or making wilds rarer. The result is a wider spread: more spins return little, and a few return a lot. That is the definition of higher volatility.

Fixed 2x wilds, as in Thunderstruck, add only a little variance. Combined multipliers that multiply each other, especially in free spins with sticky or stacked wilds, add a great deal. If your budget is small relative to your stake, those are the games most likely to empty it before a feature arrives. The volatility and budgets guide explains how to match them.

Wild multiplier myths

  • ‘A 3x wild triples everything on screen.’ Only wins the wild is part of are multiplied.
  • ‘Bigger multipliers mean better odds.’ Multipliers change payouts, not the chance of a win; the RTP is the same.
  • ‘The multiplier wild is due after a near miss.’ Every spin is independent; near misses are just results.
  • ‘Higher stakes bring bigger multipliers.’ In standard slots the multiplier values and odds are the same at every stake; only the pound value of wins changes.

Do fruit machines have multiplier wilds?

Classic pub fruit machines rarely use wilds the way video slots do. Their multiplying moments usually come from the feature board or a hi-lo gamble, where you can risk a win to double it or lose it. That is a choice you make, with its own odds, and it isn’t a multiplier wild.

On a Category C pub machine the maximum stake is £1 and the maximum prize £100, so no multiplier can go past that cap, and players must be 18 or over. As with any machine, the built-in payout percentage sets the long-run return; how you use offered holds, nudges or gambles cannot beat it.

UK rules for slots with wild multipliers

  • Online stake limits: £5 per spin at 25+ (from 9 April 2025) and £2 at 18–24 (from 21 May 2025), per the Gambling Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). See also our £2 limit for 18–24s.
  • No autoplay, turbo or slam-stop, and at least 2.5 seconds per game cycle, since 31 October 2021.
  • A multiplied win that still returns your stake or less can’t be celebrated as a win.
  • Slots supplied to Great Britain don’t sell bonus buys, so multiplier free spins can only be reached in normal play.
  • Gambling winnings aren’t taxed for UK players.

Frequently asked questions

What is a wild multiplier in slots?

A wild multiplier is a wild symbol that also multiplies any win it helps to create. A 2x wild doubles the payout of a line or way it completes, and a 3x wild triples it. Wins that don’t involve the wild are paid normally. Some games use one fixed value; others assign random values each time. Our slot multipliers guide covers other multiplier types.

Do two wild multipliers add or multiply?

It depends on the game, and the help screen will say. If values are added, a 2x and a 3x wild on one win give 5x. If they are multiplied, the same pair gives 6x, and three wilds of 2x, 3x and 5x give 30x instead of 10x. The difference grows fast with more wilds. See the game help screen page for where to look.

Which slots have wilds that double wins?

Several classics use a 2x wild. In Thunderstruck, the Thor wild doubles any win it completes; in IGT’s Cleopatra, the Cleopatra wild does the same, and Novomatic’s Dolphin’s Pearl Deluxe doubles wins with its dolphin wild. Modern games often use higher or random values instead, sometimes 3x, 5x or more, and may let several multiplier wilds combine on one win. A fixed 2x wild adds less volatility than those designs. Our Thunderstruck page covers one of the best-known examples.

Do wild multipliers increase a slot’s RTP?

No. Multiplier wilds are part of how a fixed RTP is delivered. If they make some wins larger, the designer balances that by making other wins smaller or wilds rarer, so the long-run average stays where it was set. What changes is volatility: results become more spread out. The RTP explainer shows why the average doesn’t move.

Does a wild multiplier apply to scatter wins?

Usually not. Scatter pays are counted separately from lines or ways, and a wild normally can’t substitute for a scatter, so its multiplier doesn’t touch a scatter win. A few games have their own rules, so check the help screen. Wild multipliers apply to the line or way wins the wild is actually part of. See scatter symbols for how scatters pay.

Are wild multipliers better in free spins?

They are often larger or more frequent in free spins, and sometimes combined with sticky or stacked wilds there, which is where many games concentrate their biggest outcomes. That doesn’t make the free spins profitable on average: their value is already counted in the RTP you pay through the base game. Our free spins feature guide explains how rounds are built.

Why do wild multiplier slots have such high max wins?

Because multipliers that multiply each other escalate quickly. Several high-value wilds on a top-symbol win can reach thousands of times the stake, so studios set a cap, the listed max win. Reaching it is extremely rare. At the £2 stake limit for 18–24s, a 10,000x cap is £20,000; most sessions end far below that. See max win caps.

Can I choose the multiplier on a wild?

In most slots, no; the RNG assigns it. A few games let you choose between free spins options, for example fewer spins with bigger wild multipliers or more spins with smaller ones, and Gold Blitz Extreme offers a choice of feature. Those options are designed to have similar long-run value, with different volatility. The volatility guide explains the trade-off.

Are wild multipliers the same as progressive multipliers?

No. The wild kind belongs to a symbol and affects only wins that symbol is part of. A progressive multiplier is a running total, often in free spins or cascading wins, that grows step by step and applies to every win while it is active. Some slots use both. Our progressive multipliers page covers the growing type.

Does a bigger stake give bigger wild multipliers?

In standard slots, no: the multiplier values and their odds are the same at every stake, and only the cash value of the win changes. A 3x wild at 10p a spin triples a 10p-based win; at £1 it triples a £1-based win. Your cost per spin rises in exact proportion. The bet max question explains when stake size matters.
