xNudge slots use a Nolimit City wild that lands only partly on screen, nudges step by step until it fills its reel, and adds one to its win multiplier with every step. The more it has to move, the bigger the multiplier on any win it joins, which is why one tall stacked wild can change a spin’s result.
xNudge is a Nolimit City mechanic: a partly visible stacked wild nudges until it covers the whole reel.
Each nudge raises that wild’s multiplier by one, so the wilds that move furthest pay the most.
The final position and multiplier are set by the RNG before the animation starts.
El Paso Gunfight (96.06% RTP, 44,440× max win) uses xNudge wilds, including sticky ones in free spins.
In the UK, xNudge games run at 2.5 seconds or more a spin, with no autoplay and no bonus buy.

What xNudge slots are
An xNudge slot is an online slot from Nolimit City that contains the studio’s xNudge wild. It is one of the studio’s branded “x” mechanics, listed alongside xWays, xSplit and xBomb on our Nolimit City provider page. The idea borrows from two older features at once: the stacked wild, which fills several positions on one reel, and the nudge, the button on a British pub machine that moves a reel one step.
On its own, a stacked wild that lands with only its bottom tile showing does little. An xNudge wild instead slides into view one row at a time until the whole reel is wild, and each step it takes adds one to a multiplier attached to it. A wild that needed three nudges carries a bigger multiplier than one that needed one. The feature sits in the wider family of nudging wilds; what makes xNudge different is the growing multiplier.
xNudge is a Nolimit City name. Other studios build similar nudging wilds under different labels, and the multiplier rules vary. Always read the game’s help screen for the exact version.
How the xNudge wild works, step by step
The sequence on screen looks like a chain of events, but the random number generator has already chosen the full result, including how far the wild moves, before the reels stop. The animation is a way of showing that result. In order, this is what happens:
You set a stake and press spin. The RNG picks the stop position for every reel, which fixes where the tall wild stack sits.
The reels stop. Part of the xNudge wild stack shows at the top or bottom of a reel, with the rest above or below the window.
The wild nudges one position at a time towards the centre until every row of that reel shows wild.
With each nudge step, the multiplier attached to that wild goes up by one.
Wins are counted. Any winning combination that runs through the wild reel is multiplied by that reel’s final multiplier.
In free spins on some games, the wild stays in place (sticky), keeping its multiplier for later spins.
A press report on the launch of El Paso Gunfight described it in one line: every time the special wild nudges, the win multiplier increases by one. The starting value, and what happens when two xNudge reels share a win, is set out in each game’s rules, so check the help screen rather than assuming.
A worked xNudge example on a four-row reel
Take an illustrative reel four rows high, holding a wild stack four symbols tall. The figures below show how the number of nudges, and so the multiplier, depends on how much of the stack was visible when the reel stopped. The starting value of x1 is an assumption for the example.

The counter-intuitive point is in the last row. A wild that barely scrapes onto the reel is worth more than one that lands neatly, because it has further to travel. That is the opposite of how a normal stacked wild behaves, where a full stack in view is the best result.
The multiplier only matters if the wild reel forms part of a win. A x4 wild on a spin where nothing else lines up pays nothing. On a ways to win layout, where wins only need matching symbols on adjacent reels, a whole wild reel takes part in a lot of combinations, which is why the studio pairs xNudge with ways and xWays grids.
Which xNudge slots can you play in the UK?
The xNudge slot in our verified data is El Paso Gunfight, released by Nolimit City in 2021. Its free spins round comes with jumping wilds and sticky xNudge wilds, and the base game lets you choose a High or Extreme reel set before you play. Other Nolimit City titles also use the mechanic; the safest way to confirm is the paytable or help screen of the game in front of you.

How xNudge changes the maths: RTP, volatility and max win
A feature never adds return on its own. The RTP of an xNudge slot is set for the whole game, and the multipliers are paid for by the rest of the maths: more blank spins, smaller base wins or a rarer bonus. What xNudge does is push value into fewer, larger results, which raises volatility. Nolimit City labels many of its games High, Extreme or Insane for that reason.
At 96.06%, the long-run average cost of El Paso Gunfight is about 3.94p for every £1 staked. That average only shows up over a very large number of spins; a single session can end far above or far below it. The table puts the figures in pounds.

The max win is a ceiling, not a target. The guide to max win caps explains how studios stop a game when it reaches its cap, and why the chance of getting there is tiny.
xNudge compared with other wild features
Several wild mechanics look alike in a short clip. The differences are in what moves and what grows.
Standard nudging wild: slides to fill its reel but carries no multiplier, so the gain is the extra wild positions.
Expanding wild: a single wild grows to fill its reel instantly, with no step count.
Wild multiplier: a wild carries a set or random multiplier that doesn’t depend on movement.
Sticky wild: a wild that stays put for later spins; El Paso Gunfight combines this with xNudge in free spins.
xNudge: a nudging wild whose multiplier is tied to the number of steps it takes.
xNudge and the fruit machine nudge
The word nudge comes from British pub and arcade machines. On a Category C fruit machine, the game may offer a set number of nudges after a spin, and you press a button to move a reel down one position at a time. Dransfield Novelty of Leeds has claimed to have originated the nudge feature, a claim reported in 2019; our history of nudges and holds covers the background.
The difference is who does the nudging. On a fruit machine you choose where to spend offered nudges, and choosing well can avoid missing a win the machine has offered, although no technique beats the machine’s built-in payout percentage. On an online xNudge slot you choose nothing: the wild moves automatically to a result already decided. Our page on fruit machine nudges explains the pub version in detail.
xNudge myths and what is actually true
Advantages
True: the multiplier rises with every nudge step.
True: the wild’s final position comes from the RNG result for that spin.
True: sticky xNudge wilds in free spins can hold their multiplier for later spins.
Drawbacks
Myth: a wild that nearly nudged in last spin is “due” to land fully next time.
Myth: stopping the reels quickly changes the nudge (UK slots have no slam-stop).
Myth: higher stakes make xNudge wilds appear more often. The help screen sets the rules; stake normally just scales the wins.
Every spin is independent. A part-visible wild that fails to join a win is a near miss, not a sign that the next spin will pay.
Before playing any xNudge game, open the game help screen, usually behind an i or menu icon. Look for the wild’s starting multiplier, whether multipliers on different reels add or multiply, whether the wild is sticky in free spins, the RTP figure and the max win. If you are unsure which RTP version a casino runs, our guide to finding a slot’s RTP explains where to look.

Frequently asked questions
What does xNudge mean on a slot?
xNudge is Nolimit City’s name for a wild that lands partly visible and then nudges until it fills its reel, gaining one multiplier step for each position it moves. The bigger the move, the bigger the multiplier applied to any win that passes through that reel. It is a branded version of the wider nudging wilds idea, and the studio lists it among its signature “x” mechanics on our Nolimit City page. Each game’s help screen gives the exact starting value.
How does the xNudge multiplier increase?
The multiplier goes up by one each time the wild moves a position. A wild that needs three steps to cover the reel ends three higher than it started. A press report on El Paso Gunfight’s launch described it in exactly those terms. Whether two xNudge reels in the same win add or multiply together depends on the game, so read the help screen. The wild multipliers page compares other ways slots attach multipliers to wilds, and multipliers covers the general maths.
Which slots have xNudge wilds?
The xNudge slot in our verified facts is El Paso Gunfight from Nolimit City, released in 2021, which uses sticky xNudge wilds in its free spins. Nolimit City has used the mechanic in other titles too, but game details change between releases, so confirm in the help screen of the slot you open. Our El Paso Gunfight guide covers that game in depth, and the Nolimit City provider page lists the studio’s best-known slots.
Can I make an xNudge wild move further?
No. The distance the wild moves is part of the spin result chosen by the random number generator before the reels stop, and nothing you press changes it. UK online slots have had no slam-stop or turbo since 31 October 2021, and stopping reels early made no difference to the result anyway. That is the key difference from a pub fruit machine, where you choose how to use offered nudges. The answer on whether stopping the reels is a skill explains why.
Does xNudge increase a slot’s RTP?
No. RTP is fixed for the whole game, so the value paid through xNudge multipliers is balanced by other parts of the maths, such as more losing spins or smaller everyday wins. The feature changes how wins are spread, not how much the game returns over millions of spins. El Paso Gunfight, for example, lists a 96.06% RTP, and lower versions exist. Our guides to RTP and RTP variants explain why the same game can run at different settings.
Is xNudge high volatility?
Usually, yes. Multipliers that depend on a wild landing in an awkward spot concentrate value into rare, larger results, which pushes volatility up. Nolimit City rates many of its games High, Extreme or Insane, and El Paso Gunfight is listed as High with an Extreme reel option. In practice, that means long runs of small or no wins between bigger hits. Read our volatility guide and the page on high volatility slots before choosing a stake.
What is the difference between xNudge and a fruit machine nudge?
On a fruit machine, the machine offers nudges and you choose which reel to move, one step at a time, to line up a win it has offered. On an xNudge slot the wild moves automatically, and its multiplier grows with each step. Nothing is left to choose. Neither feature beats the payout percentage built into the game. Our guide to fruit machine nudges and the answer on how fruit machine nudges work explain the pub version.
What is the max win on an xNudge slot at UK stake limits?
It depends on the game. El Paso Gunfight lists a 44,440× max win, which is £88,880 at the £2 limit for players aged 18 to 24 and £222,200 at the £5 limit for those aged 25 and over. At 10p a spin the same cap is £4,444. Reaching the cap is extremely rare, and most sessions return far less than the stake. Our pages on max win and UK stake limits give the background.
Can I buy the xNudge bonus in the UK?
No. Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos don’t offer a bonus buy, so you can only reach free spins with sticky xNudge wilds by triggering them during normal play. Some versions supplied to other markets include a buy option, which is why overseas videos can look different. You also won’t find autoplay or turbo spins in the UK version. The bonus buy in the UK page explains how games are supplied to Great Britain.
Can I play xNudge slots in demo mode?
Many casinos offer free demo play, after age verification, which has been required in Great Britain since May 2019. Demo play uses the same rules as the real version, so it is a good way to see how the nudge animation and multiplier work before you stake money, though you won’t win cash. Make sure the demo’s RTP matches the real-money version. Our demo slots guide and the page on demo age verification explain how it works.
