Sticky wilds slots use a wild symbol that locks onto its reel position and stays there for several spins, usually for a respin sequence or a whole free spins round. Each locked wild keeps substituting on every following spin, so the grid gets friendlier as the feature goes on. Below is exactly how it works, what it does to the maths and which UK slots use it.
A sticky wild stays fixed in its position for a set number of spins or until a feature ends, then the grid resets.
Most sticky wilds appear only in free spins or respins, so their value is concentrated in rarer rounds.
That concentration usually pushes a slot towards higher volatility; it does not change the RTP printed in the help screen.
Every spin is still decided by the RNG; a grid full of sticky wilds does not mean a win is due.
UK rules apply as normal: no autoplay, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, £5 stake limit (£2 for 18–24s).

What sticky wilds slots are
A wild symbol normally lasts one spin: it lands, substitutes for other symbols to complete wins, and disappears when the reels spin again. A sticky wild is a wild with memory. Once it lands, it is locked to that exact reel position and carried into the next spin, and the one after, until the game’s rules say it is released.
The word ‘sticky’ is a modifier, not a symbol of its own (the glossary entry for sticky covers other things that stick, such as multipliers and cash values). So in sticky wilds slots you will see the ordinary wild artwork, and the help screen will say something like ‘wilds that land during free spins remain in place until the end of the round’. That single sentence changes how the whole bonus behaves.
Sticky wilds sit in the wider family of slot machine features that persist between spins, alongside sticky symbols (where a paying symbol locks) and hold and win rounds (where cash symbols lock). The difference is that a sticky wild helps every payline or way that passes through its position, not just one symbol.
How sticky wilds work, spin by spin
Under the artwork, an online slot is a set of virtual reel strips and a random number generator. For each spin the RNG picks a stop on each strip. The sticky feature adds one extra layer: before the result is drawn, the game overwrites any locked positions with a wild, then evaluates wins on the combined grid.
A trigger starts the sticky phase, usually three or more scatter symbols opening free spins, or a wild landing that awards a respin.
The RNG chooses new stops for every reel, exactly as on a normal spin.
Any position already holding a sticky wild is overwritten with that wild before wins are counted.
Any new wild that lands is added to the list of locked positions.
Wins are paid on the combined grid, then the next spin repeats steps 2 to 4.
When the spins or respins run out, every sticky wild is cleared and the base game resumes.
Two points follow from this. First, the locked wilds don’t make the RNG ‘try harder’ on the other positions; the free reels are drawn the same way as before. Second, the benefit compounds: a wild locked in spin 2 helps spins 3, 4, 5 and every spin after, so wilds that land early in a round are worth more than wilds that land late.
A worked sticky wilds example on a 5×3 grid
Take an illustrative 5-reel, 3-row slot with 10 paylines and a £1 stake, so each line is worth 10p. Free spins have started and wilds are sticky until the round ends. Here is how the locked positions build up over four spins.

Look at spin 5 onwards. With wilds locked in the middle row of reels 3 and 4, plus one on reel 2’s top row, the straight middle payline only needs a symbol on reel 2’s middle row to match reel 1 to make three of a kind, and the wilds then carry it further. If the slot had 10 equally weighted symbols (real reels are weighted, so this is a simplification), the chance of reel 5 matching reel 1 on that line would be about 1 in 10, far better than the base game’s chance of five matching symbols.
These numbers are illustrative only. Real symbol weights, line shapes and pay values come from the game’s maths model, and the paytable shows what each combination actually pays.
Variants of sticky wilds in online slots
Developers use the same idea in several shapes. The help screen names the version, and the details matter more than the label.
Round-long sticky wilds: every wild that lands in free spins stays until the round ends. This is the classic version.
Respin sticky wilds: a wild lands in the base game, locks, and the other reels respin once or until no new wild arrives.
Timed sticky wilds: a wild stays for a fixed number of spins, sometimes shown as a counter on the symbol.
Sticky wilds with multipliers: the locked wild carries a value such as 2x or 3x that also stays. See wild multipliers.
Sticky expanding wilds: the wild grows to cover its reel and the whole reel then locks, overlapping with wild reels.
Moving sticky wilds: the wild stays on the grid but shifts position each spin, which is the walking wilds idea.

Dead or Alive is the slot most players picture: its free spins are all about wilds that land and refuse to leave, which is why the game swings between very quiet rounds and very strong ones. Its sequel, Dead or Alive 2, splits the idea into three modes with different sticky wild rules. Pragmatic Play’s Wild West Gold and The Dog House add multipliers to the locked wilds, which raises the ceiling further.
Sticky wilds and the maths: RTP, volatility and max win
Sticky wilds never add return on top of the published RTP. The designer fixes the total RTP first, then decides how much of it each feature delivers. If sticky wilds make free spins richer, the base game is made leaner to pay for it, usually through fewer wins or lower pays.
That trade is why sticky wilds slots tend to sit in the high volatility band. Value is concentrated in a feature you might trigger rarely, and inside that feature the outcome depends heavily on when the wilds land. A round where wilds lock on spin 1 behaves very differently from one where the first wild lands on the last spin. Both outcomes are part of the same RTP average.
Sticky wilds also explain many headline max win figures. When several reels end up covered in locked wilds, and those wilds carry multipliers, the theoretical top prize can be very large. The help screen states the maximum; anything above it is cut off by a max win cap.
What a session on a sticky wilds slot costs
Feature labels don’t change the basic arithmetic. The long-run average cost of play is the amount staked multiplied by the house edge. At a 96% RTP that edge is 4%, so 100 spins at £1 means £100 staked and an average cost of £4. Real sessions vary widely around that figure, and high-volatility sticky wild slots vary more than most.

The average hides the shape. On a sticky wilds slot, most of those 100 spins return less than the stake, and a single free spins round can decide the result of the whole session. The standard deviation guide shows how wide that spread can be.
Sticky wild myths, checked
‘A locked wild means the next spin is about to pay a large prize.’ The next spin is more likely to pay something, because the wild substitutes, but the free reels are drawn exactly as before. Nothing about the locked position steers the RNG.
‘If the round starts badly, the wilds are coming later.’ The game does not track a quota. Spins are independent, and a round can end with no sticky wilds at all.
‘Sticky wild slots pay more.’ They pay differently. The RTP is the RTP; sticky wilds just move more of it into the feature.
‘You can tell when the feature is close.’ Teasing animations and near misses are presentation, not information.
Sticky wilds vs holds on a fruit machine
Pub players will recognise the idea from hold buttons. On a Category C fruit machine (maximum stake £1, maximum prize £100, players 18+), a hold keeps a reel still while the others spin, so a symbol you already have stays on the win line. That is the same effect as a sticky symbol.
The difference is who decides. A hold is offered by the machine and chosen by you; a sticky wild is placed by the game’s rules automatically. And neither changes the long-run return. A fruit machine’s payout percentage is built in, and using an offered hold well only avoids throwing away a win the machine has already made available.
UK rules that shape sticky wilds slots
Since 31 October 2021 the Gambling Commission’s remote technical standards for online slots (opens in a new tab) have banned autoplay, turbo and slam-stop, and set a minimum of 2.5 seconds per game cycle. A respin sequence driven by sticky wilds still has to respect that pace, and each base-game spin must be started by you.
Wins equal to or smaller than the stake can’t be celebrated as wins, so a sticky wild respin returning 60p on a £1 spin should not play a fanfare (losses disguised as wins rule).
Slots supplied to Great Britain don’t offer a bonus buy, so you can’t pay to go straight to a sticky wilds round.
Free demo play is available only after age verification, which has applied since May 2019.
How to check a sticky wild in the game’s help screen
The game help screen is the only reliable source for how a specific sticky wild behaves. It is short work to read before you spin.
Open the menu or ‘i’ icon and find the feature rules, not just the pay table.
Look for the trigger: does the wild stick in the base game, in respins or only in free spins?
Check how long it lasts: a fixed number of spins, until no new wild lands, or until the round ends.
See whether locked wilds carry multipliers and whether those multipliers add or multiply.
Note the RTP shown for this version and the stated maximum win.
Our guide to finding a slot’s RTP shows where the figure usually sits in each studio’s layout.

Frequently asked questions
What does a sticky wild do in a slot?
A sticky wild locks onto its reel position and stays there for later spins instead of disappearing. While it is locked it substitutes for other symbols on every spin, so each payline or way passing through that position has a better chance of completing a win. The help screen says how long the wild stays, which is usually until a respin sequence or free spins round ends. Read more on the wild symbols page.
Are sticky wilds only in free spins?
No, but that is where you will most often find them. Many slots, including Dead or Alive, make wilds sticky only during free spins. Others use a base-game respin: a wild lands, locks, and the remaining reels spin again. A few add a timer so the wild stays for a set number of spins. The feature rules in the help screen tell you which version a game uses, and the free spins feature page explains how those rounds start.
Do sticky wilds increase a slot’s RTP?
No. A slot’s RTP is fixed by its maths model, and sticky wilds are one of the ways that fixed return is delivered. If the sticky wild feature is generous, other parts of the game pay less to keep the total the same. What sticky wilds do change is the spread of results, usually making a slot more volatile. See how RTP works for the long-run average idea.
What is the difference between sticky wilds and sticky symbols?
Sticky wilds are wilds that lock in place and keep substituting for other symbols. A sticky symbol is an ordinary paying symbol, or a cash or bonus symbol, that locks so later spins can add matching symbols around it. Sticky wilds help every line through their position; sticky symbols only help combinations of that symbol. Our sticky symbols guide covers the second type in detail.
Which slots are famous for sticky wilds?
NetEnt’s Dead or Alive is the best-known example, with sticky wilds in its free spins, and Dead or Alive 2 builds three modes around the idea. Pragmatic Play’s Wild West Gold and The Dog House add multipliers to locked wilds, and Hacksaw Gaming’s Stormforged uses them in its free spins. Game availability varies by casino. Start with our Dead or Alive page for a full walkthrough.
Can sticky wilds make a slot more volatile?
Yes, in most designs. Because sticky wilds compound over a round, the outcome of the feature depends heavily on how early wilds land, and the base game is usually leaner to pay for that. The result is long quiet periods with occasional strong rounds. That shape suits a bigger budget relative to stake. Our page on high volatility slot machines explains what to expect.
Is a sticky wild a sign that a big win is coming?
No. A locked wild raises the chance of some win on the spins it covers, but the other positions are still drawn independently by the RNG. There is no quota of wins the game has to meet, and a round can finish with nothing. Animations that build tension are presentation. The slot machine myths guide covers this and similar beliefs.
Do fruit machines have sticky wilds?
Not usually by that name. The nearest equivalent on a pub fruit machine is the hold button, which keeps a reel still while the others spin, so a symbol stays on the win line. The machine offers the hold and you choose whether to use it, whereas a sticky wild is placed automatically. Neither changes the built-in payout. See fruit machine holds for how they work.
Can I play sticky wilds slots for free in the UK?
Yes, through free demo play, after age verification. Since May 2019, UK-licensed casinos and game sites have had to verify that you are 18 or over before letting you play demo versions. The demo uses the same rules as the real-money game, so it is a fair way to see how sticky wilds behave before staking anything. Our demo slots guide explains where to find them.
Can I buy a sticky wilds bonus round in the UK?
No. Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos don’t include a feature buy, so you can’t pay a multiple of your stake to go straight into free spins with sticky wilds. You reach the round only by triggering it during normal play. Versions of the same games sold in other countries may differ. Our bonus buy page explains the background.
