Streak features in slots

Streak features slots reward wins that follow one another, either within a single spin through chains of cascades and rising multipliers, or across games on UK fruit machines, where a 'streak' is a run of wins paid from money the machine has set aside. Online, each link in the chain is random, and the chance of a long streak shrinks fast with every step.

Key takeaways

  • Online streak features reward consecutive wins inside one paid spin: cascades, climbing multipliers and progress meters.
  • On compensated fruit machines a streak is a run of wins funded by money the machine has held back.
  • Long chains are rare: if each step has a 35% chance, reaching a fifth step happens about 1.5% of the time.
  • A winning run never means the next spin is more likely to win.

What streak features in slots are

A streak feature pays more, or opens something new, when wins arrive back to back. The word covers two quite different mechanisms, and confusing them causes most of the myths around it.

  • Online streaks inside one spin. A win removes symbols, new ones fall in, and another win may follow. Each link in that chain can raise a multiplier, fill a meter or, after enough links, start a bonus. You pay once; the chain runs for as long as wins keep landing.
  • Fruit machine streaks across games. On many UK fruit machines the controller can hold back money and later award it as a series of wins. Wikipedia's slot machine article (opens in a new tab) describes this: machines are known to set money aside and award it later in a series of wins, known as a streak.

Both are listed with the other mechanics on our slot features hub. This page takes each in turn, with the maths behind them.

How online streak features work, step by step

Most online streaks are built on cascading reels, also called tumbles or avalanches. A typical sequence:

  1. You stake and spin. The random number generator fixes the whole sequence that follows, including any refills.
  2. A win lands. The winning symbols are paid and removed.
  3. Symbols above drop down and new ones fall into the gaps. The game checks for a new win.
  4. If another win lands, the streak counter moves up: a multiplier climbs, a meter fills or a stage on a ladder lights.
  5. The chain ends when a refill produces no win. Any multiplier usually resets for the next paid spin, unless the rules say it persists, as some free spin rounds do.

Because the outcome is settled when the spin starts, the chain is a way of showing one result in stages, not a run of separate games. The Gambling Commission treats a game cycle as running from pressing start until everything staked or won is lost or made available, so a whole cascade chain counts as one cycle under the 2.5-second spin rule.

Types of streak feature in online slots

Main streak mechanics
MechanicWhat builds with each consecutive winWhat it pays or opens
Multiplier ladderA multiplier steps up with each cascadeLarger wins further into the chain
Progress meterA bar or counter fills with each win or symbol removedA bonus or modifier when full
Consecutive-win triggerA count of wins in a rowA bonus game after a set number
Persistent spots or multipliersPositions that held a win gain a multiplier that can growBigger wins when symbols land there again
Grid growthRows or ways expand with each winMore ways to win on later cascades

Multiplier ladders are a form of progressive multiplier, and grid growth overlaps with expanding reels. In free spins, many games keep their streak progress from spin to spin, which is covered under increasing multipliers in free spins.

See Deal or No Deal Megaways, Gonzo's Quest 2, Extra Juicy Megaways, Sugar Rush Xmas and Blood & Shadow 2. The original Gonzo's Quest is the classic example of an avalanche multiplier that rises with consecutive wins.

The maths of a streak: why long chains are rare

Suppose, for illustration, that after any win the refill produces another win 35% of the time, and each refill is independent. The chance of reaching each stage of the chain multiplies down quickly.

Illustrative chance of reaching each stage of a chain (35% continue rate)
Stage reachedCalculationChance, given a first winAbout 1 in
1st win—100%1
2nd consecutive win0.3535%3
3rd0.35 × 0.3512.3%8
4th0.35³4.3%23
5th0.35⁴1.5%67
6th0.35⁵0.5%190

Now attach a multiplier ladder of 1x, 2x, 3x and 5x for the first four wins. If each win in the chain pays 0.5x your stake before the multiplier, a four-win streak pays 0.5 + 1 + 1.5 + 2.5 = 5.5x the stake, or £1.10 at 20p. The ladder makes the rare long chain worth far more than the common short one, which is the definition of higher volatility. The overall return is still fixed by the design: 100 spins at 20p cost £20, and at 96% RTP the long-run average cost is 80p however the wins are bunched.

Streaks on UK fruit machines and pub machines

On a compensated fruit machine a streak is a planned release of money. The machine tracks takings and payouts and, when it has paid out less than its target percentage, can award a run of wins over several games. That is why pub machines can feel cold for a long time and then pay several times in quick succession; our page on why fruit machines pay out in bursts explains it in detail. A related behaviour, paying the same win over and over, is covered on repeat chance slots.

Streaks on machines stay inside the category limits set out on the Gambling Commission's gaming machine categories (opens in a new tab) page. Each game in a streak is a separate paid game with its own maximum prize.

Limits that apply to each game in a fruit machine streak

B3£2£500Bingo halls, adult gaming centres
B4£2£400Members' clubs, bingo halls
C£1£100Pubs, clubs
D (money prize)10p£5Arcades and family entertainment centres

Watching a machine to catch its streak is not a plan. The internal bank is invisible, other players change it, and no technique beats the built-in payout percentage. Categories B and C are 18+ only.

Streak myths: hot machines, hot hands and due wins

Advantages

  • Fact: an online cascade chain is fixed when the spin starts.
  • Fact: each paid online spin is independent of the last.
  • Fact: streak features raise volatility, not the RTP.
  • Fact: fruit machine streaks depend on a hidden bank you can't read.

Drawbacks

  • Myth: a slot on a winning run is 'hot' and will keep paying.
  • Myth: after a long losing run a streak is due.
  • Myth: raising the stake during a streak catches more of it.
  • Myth: a streak meter that is nearly full will finish on the next spin.

The first two myths are mirror images of the gambler's fallacy. Online, a meter that persists between spins will fill eventually, but the chance of each spin adding to it doesn't change, and you pay for every spin while you wait. Our page on whether slot machines remember past spins explains what is and isn't carried over.

UK rules that shape streak features online

Since 31 October 2021, online slots in Great Britain must not celebrate a return that is equal to or less than the stake, under the Commission's RTS 14 responsible product design (opens in a new tab) standard. That affects streak features directly: a chain of small cascade wins that adds up to less than your stake cannot be shown with win fanfare, however many links it has. Our page on the losses disguised as wins rule gives examples.

The same package removed autoplay and turbo, set a 2.5-second minimum per game cycle, and requires your net position and session time to be on screen. Any spin that starts a chain is limited to a £5 stake for over-25s, the rule since 9 April 2025, and to £2 for younger adults aged 18 to 24, the rule since 21 May 2025.

Who streak feature slots suit

Streak features suit players who accept long quiet periods in exchange for the occasional long chain, and who play with a fixed budget. They suit less well anyone who finds that near-complete meters or almost-chains pull them into extra spins. If that sounds familiar, set a deposit limit and a time limit first; our guide to slot session limits shows how. Players wanting steadier play may prefer low volatility slot machines.

Where to play cascade and streak feature slots

Cascade slots with streak features are common in UK lobbies, though availability changes, so search the casino for the game before joining. Check the RTP inside the game, since several titles above come in lower versions.

Frequently asked questions

What is a streak feature in a slot?

A streak feature rewards wins that come one after another. Online, that usually means a chain of cascades inside a single paid spin, with a multiplier that climbs, a meter that fills or a bonus that starts after enough consecutive wins. On UK fruit machines a streak is a run of wins across several games, paid from money the machine has set aside. Read about cascading reels and progressive multipliers for the online mechanics behind most streaks.

Are slots streaky?

Wins do cluster by chance, and some slots are designed to deliver returns in bunches, but an online slot has no memory of a winning or losing run. Each paid spin is independent, so a streak tells you nothing about the next spin. Fruit machines on a compensated model are different: they can pay in bursts because they steer towards a target payout. Our pages on whether slots have patterns and why fruit machines pay out in bursts explain the difference.

How likely is a long cascade streak?

Unlikely, and less likely with every step. In our illustration, where each refill wins 35% of the time, a second consecutive win follows 35% of first wins, a fourth about 4.3% and a sixth about 0.5%. Real games set their own rates, which are not usually published, but the shape is always the same: each extra step multiplies the chance down. Our pages on hit frequency and slot maths models explain how designers set these rates.

Does a winning streak mean a slot is hot?

No. Online slots don't heat up or cool down; every paid spin is a fresh random result, and a run of wins changes nothing about the next one. Words like hot, loose and due describe feelings, not how the software works. Fruit machines on a compensated model do respond to past play, but you can't see their position and no method beats their payout percentage. Read loose and tight slot machines and the slot machine myths guide.

What is a streak on a fruit machine?

On a UK fruit machine a streak is a series of wins over consecutive games, funded by money the machine has set aside. Compensated machines track takings and payouts, and when they have paid out less than their target percentage they can release money in a run of wins. Each game in the streak is a separate paid game, limited to the category's maximum prize, for example £100 on a Category C pub machine. See our compensated machines page and the pub fruit machine guide.

Do streak meters carry over between spins?

It depends on the game. Many streak multipliers reset at the end of each paid spin, while some meters and multiplier spots persist through a free spins round, and a few save between base-game spins. The help screen says which. A persistent meter will fill eventually, but each spin's chance of adding to it doesn't change, and every spin costs a stake. Read our guides to the game help screen and what triggers a bonus round.

Why doesn't my slot celebrate a small cascade streak?

Because UK rules stop it. Since 31 October 2021, online slots in Great Britain must not celebrate a return that is equal to or less than the total stake. If a chain of cascades adds up to less than you staked, the game can show the wins but cannot use win sounds or animations that suggest you came out ahead. Our pages on the losses disguised as wins rule and why a slot win did not celebrate explain more.

Do streak features make slots more expensive?

Not on average. The RTP sets the long-run cost: 100 spins at 20p stake £20, and at 96% RTP the average cost is 80p, with or without a streak feature. What changes is the spread of results. Streak features push value into rare long chains, so most sessions see little of it and a few see a lot. That higher volatility can make a budget run out faster. See which volatility suits my budget and the slot cost calculator.

Can I improve my chances of a streak?

No. Online, the whole chain is decided when the spin starts, and nothing about stake, timing or how long you have played changes the probability of the next win. On fruit machines the controller decides streaks using information you can't see. Raising your stake only makes each win, and each loss, larger. The honest approach is to treat streaks as entertainment and set limits first. Our guides on how to win on slot machines and slot machine tips explain what genuinely helps.
