How a Blood & Shadow 2 spin plays out

Blood & Shadow 2 is a ways game: matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left pay, with no fixed lines. The base grid is five reels tall enough for four rows of symbols, and a bottom row is held in reserve for wilds that the Ritual Bar switches on. Each win clears its symbols and new ones drop in, so a spin can run as a chain of tumbles.

  1. Set your stake and press spin; the RNG fixes the result for the whole chain.
  2. Symbols land on the five reels; ways wins from reel 1 are paid.
  3. Winning symbols disappear and new symbols fall in from above.
  4. Scatters and certain wins add points to the Ritual Bar beneath the reels.
  5. Each time the bar fills a level, the reels change and a wild switches on in the bottom row.
  6. xSplit symbols, if they land, split rows or reels and apply multipliers.
  7. Reaching a high enough Ritual level starts a free spins round; otherwise the spin ends and pays.

Each tumble, level-up and split is part of one paid spin. UK rules treat the whole chain as one game cycle of at least 2.5 seconds.

The Ritual Bar: how Blood & Shadow 2 levels up

The Ritual Bar is the heart of the game. It sits along the bottom of the reels and fills with points from scatters and from mid and high-value wins. When it fills, it moves up a level, resets, and carries any excess points into the next level. Each level does three things, according to published descriptions.

What each Ritual Bar level changes
ChangeEffect on the reelsWhy it matters
Lowest low symbol removedOne fewer low-paying symbol on the reelsRemaining symbols land more often, so wins form more easily
Lowest mid symbol upgradedBecomes its possessed top versionThat symbol now pays at a higher rate
Wild switched onA wild activates in the bottom rowAdds substitutions to later tumbles

This is a version of symbol upgrades and symbol removal tied to a meter. It means the game gets steadily stronger during a long chain, which is why a single spin that keeps tumbling can escalate. The help screen states how many points each level needs and whether anything carries over between paid spins.

xSplit: the Guillotine and the Dagger

Blood & Shadow 2 uses two xSplit symbols. The Guillotine splits the symbols on its reel; the Dagger splits the symbols along its row. A split symbol becomes two and gains a multiplier, and the xSplit symbol then turns wild. Where a Guillotine and a Dagger cross, a symbol can be split more than once and its multiplier compounds.

This is how the ways count climbs. With five rows on each of five reels, the most paths possible are 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 = 3,125. Splitting a symbol adds a position on that reel, so a reel with four symbols and one split has five: in ways terms that multiplies every win through it by 5/4. Our split symbols page explains the idea, and the ways to win slot machines guide covers the arithmetic.

Blood & Shadow 2 free spins: Candle Spins and Reign of Terror

There are two free spins modes. Candle Spins are awarded as the Ritual Bar levels up, giving a few spins during which the bar keeps filling. Reign of Terror is the main bonus, reached by taking the bar high enough. It plays on the full 5 × 5 grid with the low and mid symbols removed, leaving the high payers and special symbols, and scatters can add spins.

In both modes, wilds drop to the bottom row and stay there until they are used in a win, a form of sticky wilds. That combination, a bigger grid, only top symbols and wilds that wait to be used, is where the 16,161× cap becomes reachable. The help screen states the spin counts and the level needed; we don’t quote trigger rates.

Blood & Shadow 2 RTP and what it costs

The top Blood & Shadow 2 RTP is 96.09%, and lower versions exist. Casinos choose which version to run, so read the figure in the help screen; our page on RTP variants explains why one game can have several. At the top version:

Blood & Shadow 2 cost per 100 spins at 96.09%
StakeTotal stakedAverage returnAverage cost
20p£20£19.22£0.78
50p£50£48.05£1.95
£1£100£96.09£3.91
£2 (limit for 18–24s)£200£192.18£7.82
£5 (limit for 25+)£500£480.45£19.55

Those are averages over a very long run. With high volatility, a few hundred spins can lose far more than the table suggests, because so much of the return is held back for Reign of Terror. See RTP explained for why short sessions swing so much.

Blood & Shadow 2 max win at UK stakes

The Blood & Shadow 2 max win is 16,161× stake. A round that reaches it stops and pays the capped amount.

Blood & Shadow 2 max win by stake
StakeMax win (16,161×)
10p£1,616.10
20p£3,232.20
£1£16,161
£2 (limit for 18–24s)£32,322
£5 (limit for 25+)£80,805

The cap is a ceiling the game’s maths allows, reached on a vanishingly small share of spins. The max win caps page explains how it fits with the RTP.

Blood & Shadow 2 symbols and paytable

The paytable has low symbols, mid-value character symbols and possessed top versions that the Ritual Bar creates by upgrading. Values are shown as multiples of your stake. Because the reels change during a chain, the effective paytable on a long spin is better than the one you start with, which is part of why the game is so volatile. Open the paytable in the game to see the current values; they can differ by RTP version.

How to check the Blood & Shadow 2 RTP version

  1. Load Blood & Shadow 2 at the casino and open the menu.
  2. Choose the rules or game help screen.
  3. Find the return to player figure, usually near the end of the rules.
  4. Compare it with 96.09%; a lower figure means a lower version.
  5. Check the stated maximum win and the Ritual Bar rules while you are there.

Published game pages such as SlotCatalog’s Blood & Shadow 2 listing (opens in a new tab) and gambling.com’s game page (opens in a new tab) differ on some details, which is another reason to trust the help screen first.

The UK version of the Blood & Shadow 2 slot

Outside Great Britain, the game is sold with several buy options, including entry straight into Reign of Terror and enhanced bets. Those aren’t part of versions supplied to British players; see bonus buy in the UK. Every UK spin follows the responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab) in force since 31 October 2021: no autoplay, no turbo, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no celebration of returns at or below the stake and your net position on screen.

Stakes are capped at £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over (since 9 April 2025) and £2 for those aged 18 to 24 (since 21 May 2025). The free demo, after age verification, follows the same game rules with play credits. See our summary of UK slot machine rules.

Blood & Shadow 2 myths

  • A high Ritual level means Reign of Terror is coming. Whether it is reached on this spin was decided when you pressed spin.
  • Wilds waiting in the bottom row mean a big win is coming. They stay until used in a win or until the next paid spin, and they only add substitutions.
  • Higher stakes fill the bar faster. The bar responds to symbols, not to your stake.
  • The game is ‘hot’ after a big win. No slot runs hot or cold; see loose and tight slot machines.

  • Ritual Bar gives each spin a sense of progression

Frequently asked questions

What is the Blood & Shadow 2 RTP?

The top Blood & Shadow 2 RTP is 96.09%, meaning about £96.09 returned for every £100 staked over millions of spins. Lower versions also exist, and the casino chooses which to offer, so read the figure in the game’s help screen. Because the game is high volatility, a single session can end far from the average. Our guide on reading slot RTP in the UK shows where the figure appears and what it does and doesn’t tell you.

What is the Blood & Shadow 2 max win?

The Blood & Shadow 2 max win is 16,161 times your stake. That is £3,232.20 at a 20p stake, £32,322 at the £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds and £80,805 at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over. When a round reaches it, play stops and the capped amount is paid. It is reached only on an extremely small share of spins. Compare other caps on our what slot has the biggest max win page.

What is the Ritual Bar in Blood & Shadow 2?

The Ritual Bar is a meter beneath the reels that fills with points from scatters and from mid and high-value wins. Each time it fills, it levels up: the weakest low symbol is removed, the weakest mid symbol is upgraded to its top version and a wild is switched on in the bottom row. Higher levels award free spins, and a high enough level starts Reign of Terror. See our symbol upgrades page for the general mechanic.

How do you trigger Reign of Terror in Blood & Shadow 2?

Reign of Terror starts when the Ritual Bar reaches a high enough level during play. You get there by levelling the bar through scatters and good wins, often passing through Candle Spins on the way. In the UK it can’t be bought, so the only route is through normal paid spins. The help screen states which level is needed and how many spins you get. Our page on what triggers a bonus round explains how triggers work generally.

How many ways to win does Blood & Shadow 2 have?

Blood & Shadow 2 can reach up to 3,125 ways. That is the number of left-to-right paths when all five reels show five symbols: five multiplied by itself five times. The base grid offers fewer, and xSplit symbols and the bigger free spins grid push the count towards the maximum. Every spin covers all available ways, so there are no lines to choose. Our 243 ways slots page explains how ways are counted.

What do the Guillotine and Dagger do?

They are the game’s two xSplit symbols. The Guillotine splits symbols on its own reel and the Dagger splits symbols along its row. Each split symbol becomes two and carries a multiplier, and the xSplit symbol then turns wild. Where a reel split and a row split cross, a symbol can be split more than once and its multiplier compounds. Our split symbols page explains the mechanic with examples from other games.

Is there a Blood & Shadow 2 demo?

You can try it with play credits at most casinos that list it. As with every demo offered in Great Britain since May 2019, age verification comes first. It uses play credits and shows the Ritual Bar, xSplit symbols and both bonus modes, so it is a good way to learn the game. Results are random and don’t predict real-money play, and they don’t tell you anything about your next spin. Our demo slots guide explains how to use demos sensibly.

Is Blood & Shadow 2 high volatility?

Yes, it is rated high volatility. Much of its return is concentrated in long chains and the Reign of Terror bonus, so many spins return little or nothing and a small budget can run out before the bonus appears. Plan your session with that in mind and set limits in advance. If you want a steadier game with a similar mood, look at a medium-volatility title instead. Our volatility explainer shows how this affects a budget.

Can I buy the Blood & Shadow 2 bonus in the UK?

No. Outside Great Britain the game is sold with buy options, including direct entry to Reign of Terror and enhanced bet modes, but versions supplied to British players don’t include them. You reach the bonuses only by filling the Ritual Bar during normal paid spins, within the £5 and £2 per-spin limits. Read bonus buy in the UK for how feature buys are treated.

Who makes Blood & Shadow 2?

Nolimit City, the studio behind Mental, San Quentin and the Tombstone games, made it. Evolution owns the studio after a deal announced in June 2022, and its games are carried by many UK casinos, often in more than one RTP version. Blood & Shadow 2, released in 2024, is a sequel to the studio’s earlier Blood & Shadow. The studio is known for high-volatility games and x-branded mechanics such as xSplit. Our Nolimit City provider page lists more of its slots.
