Split symbols in slots

Split symbols in slots are single reel positions that hold two or more copies of a symbol, so one landing counts as two (or three) for paying wins. Some arrive printed as doubles; others are created mid-spin by features such as xSplit or Razor Split, which divide symbols and add ways to win.

Key takeaways

  • A split symbol counts as two or more matching symbols in one position.
  • On ways slots, splitting a symbol adds positions to that reel and multiplies the number of ways.
  • On line slots, a double symbol lets a three-reel landing count as four or five of a kind.
  • Nolimit City’s xSplit and Razor Split are the best-known modern split features; both appear in extreme-volatility games.
  • Pub fruit machines used the idea first, with double and triple BAR symbols.

What split symbols in slots are

A split symbol is one cell on the reels that holds more than one copy of the same symbol. Picture a single position showing two cherries side by side. For paying wins, the game reads it as two cherries rather than one, so it can complete a longer combination or count twice towards a ways win.

There are two broad families. Printed splits are part of the reel strip from the start, such as a ‘double’ version of a symbol that lands like any other. Created splits happen after the reels stop: a modifier lands and divides every symbol on its reel, or a whole reel is marked to split. The second family is far more common in modern online slots, and it sits alongside other slot machine features that reshape the grid after the spin.

How split symbols count on paylines and ways

The counting rule depends on how the slot pays. On paylines, a split symbol on reel 2 adds an extra symbol to the line, so cherry, double cherry, cherry reads as four in a row across three reels. On ways to win slots, a split adds a position to its reel, and the ways total is recalculated with the extra position.

  1. The RNG picks the stops and the symbols land as normal.
  2. Any split modifier or split reel is applied, dividing the affected symbols.
  3. The game counts positions per reel again, with each half or third treated as its own position.
  4. Ways are worked out by multiplying the matching positions on consecutive reels from the left.
  5. Each way or line pays the paytable amount, then any multipliers are applied.

Because the extra copies come from the same cell, split symbols do not need more room on screen. That is why studios can add thousands of ways to a small grid without making the reels taller.

Worked example: one split on a 243-ways slot

A standard 5-reel, 3-row slot has 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243 ways. Split one symbol on reel 2 into two halves and that reel now has four positions.

How splitting changes the ways count on a 5×3 slot
SituationPositions per reelWays to win
No splits3, 3, 3, 3, 3243
One symbol split on reel 23, 4, 3, 3, 3324
Every symbol on reel 2 split3, 6, 3, 3, 3486
Every symbol on reels 2 and 4 split3, 6, 3, 6, 3972
Every symbol on reel 3 split into thirds3, 3, 9, 3, 3729

Now the win. Suppose reel 1 has one crown, reel 2 has a split crown (two halves), and reel 3 has one crown. That is 1 × 2 × 1 = 2 ways of three crowns. If three crowns pay 50p at your stake, the spin pays £1 instead of 50p. Add a crown on reel 4 and the same split doubles a four-crown win as well.

xSplit, Razor Split and Reel Split in Nolimit City slots

Nolimit City made split mechanics part of its identity, listing xSplit among its signature features. Each version works a little differently, so the help screen matters.

  • xSplit (Mental): Mental adds ways through xWays and xSplit on a 3-2-3-2-3 layout with 108 base ways. Reference listings for Mental 2 describe the xSplit symbol splitting symbols on the reels it affects and then turning into two wilds; check the help screen of each game for its own version.
  • Fire Frames and Fire Reels (Mental 2): Slotcatalog’s Mental 2 listing (opens in a new tab) describes symbols landing in a burning position splitting in two, while a Fire Reel splits every symbol on it into three.
  • Razor Split (San Quentin 2): OLBG’s San Quentin 2 listing (opens in a new tab) says Razor Split doubles the positions of every symbol on its reel, and splits twice if it lands in both enhancer cells on that reel.
  • Reel Split (True Grit Redemption): True Grit Redemption pairs Reel Split with free-spin rounds that open extra grid positions.

Splits stack with Nolimit City’s xWays feature, which expands a reel with extra matching symbols. When both hit the same reel, positions multiply quickly, which is how the San Quentin xWays slot rises from 243 base ways.

Read the RTP column carefully. Each of these games is supplied in more than one RTP setting, and a casino picks which one to run; San Quentin 2, for example, also exists at 94.03% and 92.11%. Our guide to RTP variants explains why the same slot can return different amounts at different sites.

Splitting on grid slots: Megaclusters

Split logic is not limited to reels. Big Time Gaming uses it in Megaclusters, the mechanic behind Star Clusters Megaclusters. Our spec sheet lists a 4×4 grid that expands as symbols split, with cluster pays and a 96.54% RTP. When a winning block breaks into smaller blocks, the grid gains positions, giving later cascades more room to form clusters.

The principle is the same as xSplit: more positions from the same screen area, which means more ways for a matching group to form. The difference is that on a cluster grid the split usually follows a win, rather than being a modifier that lands beside the reels.

Split symbols and the cost of play

Splitting features are expensive for a game’s maths budget, because a full reel of splits can multiply a win several times over. To pay for them, slots with heavy split mechanics usually have sparse base games and very high volatility. The RTP stays where the developer set it; the swings get wider.

San Quentin 2 at 96.13% RTP: 100 spins at UK stakes
Stake per spinStakedAverage cost over 100 spinsMax win at 200,000×
20p£20about 77p£40,000
£1£100about £3.87£200,000
£2 (18–24 limit)£200about £7.74£400,000
£5 (25+ limit)£500about £19.35£1,000,000

These averages only describe the very long run. Over 100 spins of an extreme-volatility slot, losing most or all of the £20 at 20p a spin is a normal outcome, and the max win is a rare ceiling rather than a realistic aim.

Double and triple BARs: the fruit machine split symbol

Split symbols are older than video slots. Pub and arcade fruit machines have long carried double BAR and triple BAR symbols alongside the single BAR. On those machines, though, a double BAR is usually its own symbol with its own prize, and many paytables also pay ‘any BAR’ mixes.

Modern split symbols changed the rule: a double now counts as two of the same symbol rather than as a separate symbol. The idea of packing more value into one position is the same, but the counting is different, so do not assume a fruit-style slot online treats a double the way a pub machine does. Check the paytable.

Split symbol myths and facts

  • Myth: more ways means better odds of profit. Fact: ways are a counting system. The RTP is fixed by the maths model, so adding ways spreads the same return across more combinations.
  • Myth: a split symbol that just missed means a split win is close. Fact: near misses mean nothing; the next spin is independent.
  • Myth: you can choose which reel splits. Fact: split modifiers land by the RNG like any other symbol, and the stop button changes nothing online.
  • Myth: split symbols pay double the paytable value. Fact: they count as extra symbols, which can make a longer or wider win; the paytable amount per way stays the same.

UK rules for split-symbol slots

Split slots follow the same UK design rules as any other online slot: since 31 October 2021, no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop and at least 2.5 seconds per spin, plus a £5 maximum stake (£2 for 18–24s). Games that offer optional bets elsewhere still cannot include bonus buy in their UK versions. The Commission’s standard on game rules and the likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab) requires clear game descriptions, which is where each split rule is set out. For a summary of every rule, see our UK slot rules guide.

Frequently asked questions

What are split symbols in slots?

Split symbols are single reel positions that contain two or more copies of a symbol and count as that many for wins. A split cherry on reel 2 counts as two cherries, which can turn a three-reel landing into four of a kind on a line, or double the number of ways on a ways game. Some splits are printed on the reels; others are created by a modifier after the reels stop. See ways to win slots for the counting basics.

How many ways does a split add?

A split adds one position per extra copy, and the ways total is recalculated. On a 5×3 slot with 243 ways, splitting one symbol on reel 2 makes that reel four positions high, giving 3 × 4 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 324 ways. Splitting every symbol on reel 2 gives 486. Splitting into thirds adds more. The rise is only useful if the split symbols match the combination you have. The base calculation is set out in what 243 ways means.

What is xSplit in Nolimit City slots?

xSplit is a Nolimit City modifier that splits symbols on the reels it affects, creating extra positions and more ways to win. In Mental, xSplit works alongside xWays on a 3-2-3-2-3 layout that starts at 108 ways; in Mental 2, reference listings say the xSplit symbol also turns into two wilds. Exact behaviour differs between games, so read each help screen. Our Nolimit City provider page covers the studio’s other ‘x’ mechanics.

What does Razor Split do in San Quentin?

Razor Split doubles the positions of every symbol on the reel where it lands, which adds ways to win. In San Quentin 2, it can split twice if it appears in both the upper and lower enhancer cells on the same reel, according to reference listings. The game starts on 1,024 ways and lists a 200,000× max win with a 96.13% default RTP. Our San Quentin 2 page has the full specification.

Do split symbols change a slot’s RTP?

No, split features are part of the RTP the developer sets. The maths model already includes how often splits land and how much they add, and the base game is tuned so the overall return matches the published figure. What splits change is how the return arrives: usually more quiet spins and a few large results. Check the game’s help screen for the RTP your casino runs, as several split slots come in different RTP versions.

Are split symbols the same as stacked symbols?

No, a stack fills several reel positions with one symbol, while a split fits several copies into one position. Both can make a reel full of matches, but a split adds positions and ways, whereas a stack fills positions that already exist. A reel can have both: a stack of three crowns where each crown then splits gives six crown positions. Stacks are covered in detail on the stacked symbols page.

Did fruit machines have split symbols?

In a sense, yes: double and triple BAR symbols packed extra value into one position long before video slots. On most fruit machines, though, a double BAR is its own symbol with its own prize rather than two single BARs, and many paytables also pay mixed ‘any BAR’ lines. Modern split symbols count as two of the same symbol instead. Our pages on the double BAR and triple BAR cover the history.

Can I make a split land by stopping the reels?

No, online the outcome is fixed by the RNG before the reels stop, and UK slots no longer have a slam-stop anyway. Split modifiers land at random in line with the game’s maths, and nothing you press changes where they fall. Timing, stake changes and session length have no effect either. Read whether stopping the reels is a skill for why, including the different rules for nudges on pub machines.

What is the biggest max win on a split-symbol slot?

Among the games in our database, San Quentin 2 lists the highest cap at 200,000× the stake, followed by San Quentin xWays at 150,000×. At the UK £5 limit for players aged 25 and over, 200,000× would be £1,000,000; at the £2 limit for 18–24s, £400,000. Those are theoretical ceilings that almost no rounds approach. Our page on max win caps explains how caps are set and what happens when a round reaches one.

Are split-symbol slots good for small budgets?

Usually not, because most split slots are high or extreme volatility. Their returns arrive in rare, large features, so a small balance can run out before a feature lands. At 20p a spin, £20 lasts 100 spins at most, and losing most of it is a normal result on these games. If your budget is small, lower-volatility games stretch it further. See the best slots for small budgets and set a limit before you play.
