The Star Clusters Megaclusters slot is a 2020 cluster-pays game from Big Time Gaming in which every winning symbol splits into four smaller ones, so the board keeps getting finer as wins chain together. It has a 96.54% RTP, medium–high volatility and gold wild multipliers that grow with each win they join.
Big Time Gaming released Star Clusters Megaclusters in 2020 with a 96.54% RTP.
Winning symbols are removed and the tiles split into four, so a 4×4 board can become 8×8.
Gold wilds carry multipliers that rise by 1x each time they take part in a win.
In free spins the board grows further and the gold wild multiplier no longer resets.
Published max win figures conflict, so check the help screen rather than trusting a headline number.

Star Clusters Megaclusters slot in plain English
Most slots have a fixed number of positions. This one doesn't. Big Time Gaming, the Sydney studio behind Megaways, built Star Clusters around its Megaclusters mechanic: the board starts with 16 large tiles, and each time a tile is part of a winning cluster it divides into four smaller tiles. Keep winning and the grid gets busier, with more, smaller symbols and more chances for new clusters.
Big Time Gaming describes the game as a reactor, its word for a game where wins clear away and new symbols fall in. It's a member of the cluster pays family, but the splitting tiles make it behave unlike a fixed 7×7 board such as Reactoonz.
How the Star Clusters Megaclusters slot machine works
As always, the random number generator has settled the outcome of the whole sequence before you see it. The animation simply plays it back, step by step.
Choose your stake and press spin. A 4×4 board of large tiles drops in.
The game looks for clusters of matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically; reference listings put the minimum at 5.
Each winning cluster pays, then its symbols are removed.
Every tile that was part of the win splits into four smaller tiles, and new symbols fall into the gaps.
If new clusters form, they pay and split again. This chain is called a reaction.
When no new clusters form, the sequence ends and your balance updates.
How the board grows: a worked example
Start with 16 large tiles. Suppose a win uses three of them. Each of those three becomes four small tiles, so the board now has 13 large tiles and 12 small ones: 25 positions instead of 16. If the next win uses two more large tiles, those split too: 11 large and 20 small, or 31 positions. Small tiles that win are simply replaced, because in the base game they can't divide any further. The most the base game can reach is the equivalent of an 8×8 board, 64 small tiles. More positions mean more symbols in view, which is why long reactions tend to become more productive as they go.

The idea is related to split symbols, but here it's the board itself that divides rather than one symbol counting double.
Rainbow wilds and gold wild multipliers
Two kinds of wild symbol help complete clusters. The rainbow star is a plain wild. The gold star is the interesting one: it's a wild with a multiplier attached, and reference listings say up to two gold wilds can be in play.
A gold wild's multiplier starts at 1x.
It rises by 1x each time that gold wild is part of a winning cluster.
In the base game it resets when the reaction ends.
When two gold wilds both join a win, Big Time Gaming says their multipliers multiply each other.
That last point matters. Two gold wilds at 4x and 5x in the same cluster give 20x on that win, not 9x. It's the main route to the game's biggest results, and the main reason the volatility sits at medium–high. Read more about wild multipliers.
Star Clusters Megaclusters free spins
There's no scatter symbol in the usual sense. Reference listings describe the bonus as triggered by a long reaction: five reactions in a row on one spin. You get 2 free spins, plus 1 more for every reaction above five, so a seven-reaction chain would give 4 free spins.
In the bonus, the board starts at 8×8 and can split down to 16×16. Big Time Gaming says that allows 256 symbols on screen at once. The gold wild multipliers no longer reset between spins, and reference listings say every time a multiplier climbs by 10x you get 2 extra spins. That persistence is where free spins can turn into something large, and also why a short bonus can end with little.
Big Time Gaming's own page doesn't spell out the trigger or the spin count, so treat these figures as a guide and confirm them in the game's help screen at your casino.
Star Clusters Megaclusters RTP and what it costs
The RTP is 96.54%, leaving a house edge of 3.46%. That's a little better than many modern online slots, but it's still a built-in cost: over a long run the game is designed to keep about £3.46 of every £100 staked.

With medium–high volatility, a large share of that 96.54% is paid out through long reactions, gold wild combinations and the bonus. Many 100-spin sessions will return well under the expected figure, and a few will return far more. The average is only reached across enormous numbers of spins.
Star Clusters Megaclusters max win
We don't state a max win for this game, because the published figures disagree. Different reference listings give a base-game cap of about 1,300x, a figure of about 14,400x and a single-spin figure near 24,000x, and our verified slot facts don't confirm any of them. If you want the real ceiling, the game's help screen at your casino shows the version you are playing.
Whatever the multiple, it applies to your stake, which is capped at £5 a spin if you're 25 or over and £2 if you're 18–24. Our guide to max win caps explains how studios set and enforce them.
How UK rules shape Star Clusters
Long cascade chains raise a fair question: does the 2.5-second minimum apply to each reaction? It applies to the game cycle, which is the whole spin from pressing the button to the final result, as set out in the Gambling Commission's responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab). A long reaction simply takes longer than that.
No autoplay since 31 October 2021: every spin is started by you.
No turbo or slam-stop, so the reactions play at the designed speed.
No celebrating a total that's equal to or less than your stake, even if several small clusters paid.
Stake caps of £5 (25+) from 9 April 2025 and £2 (18–24) from 21 May 2025.
No bonus buy in versions supplied to Great Britain, so free spins come only from reactions.
See our page on game cycle for how a spin's length is measured.

A free demo is a good way to watch the splitting board without staking anything, but in Britain you'll need to pass age verification first. Demo versions must follow the same maths as the paid game. Our demo slots guide explains how to use one sensibly.

Is Star Clusters Megaclusters worth it?
Advantages
High published RTP of 96.54%
Original splitting mechanic
Gold wild multipliers that multiply each other
Free spins with persistent multipliers
Drawbacks
Medium–high volatility means long quiet spells
Free spins trigger depends on long reactions
No reliable max win figure
It suits adults who enjoy watching a chain build and accept that most spins end quickly. If you prefer steady small wins, a lower-volatility game is a better fit.
Myths about splitting symbols
A bigger board after a few wins can look like the game is warming up. It isn't. The board resets at the start of every base-game spin, and the RNG decides each sequence on its own. Nor does a near-complete reaction chain mean the bonus is close next time: there's no memory between spins. Our page on slot machine near misses explains why falling just short feels more meaningful than it is.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Star Clusters Megaclusters RTP?
The RTP is 96.54%, the figure Big Time Gaming publishes for the game. That means a house edge of 3.46%, so across millions of spins the game keeps about £3.46 of every £100 staked. Your own session can land far from that average either way, especially on a medium–high volatility game. Check the help screen at your casino to confirm the version in use. How that compares with other games is covered under what is a good RTP for a slot.
How do Megaclusters work?
Megaclusters is Big Time Gaming's cluster mechanic in which each tile that's part of a winning cluster splits into four smaller tiles after the win is paid. New symbols fall into the gaps, and if more clusters form, they split again. In Star Clusters the base board starts at 4×4 and can become the equivalent of 8×8, giving more positions as a chain goes on. It's a variation on cluster pays vs paylines, with a board that changes size.
How do you trigger free spins in Star Clusters Megaclusters?
Reference listings say the bonus is triggered by five reactions in a row on a single spin, rather than by scatter symbols. You receive 2 free spins plus 1 extra for each reaction beyond five, so seven reactions would give 4 spins. Big Time Gaming's own page doesn't list these numbers, so check the help screen at your casino before relying on them. The chance of a long chain is the same on every spin. For background, see how many spins until a bonus.
What is the max win on Star Clusters Megaclusters?
We don't quote one, because published figures conflict. Some listings mention a base-game cap of about 1,300x, others numbers around 14,400x and 24,000x, and none is confirmed in our verified facts. The help screen at your casino states the version you're playing. Whatever the multiple, it applies to your stake, which can't exceed £5 per spin for adults aged 25 and over or £2 for those aged 18–24. More on how ceilings work in max win.
What do the gold stars do in Star Clusters?
The gold stars are wilds with multipliers. Each starts at 1x and rises by 1x every time it's part of a winning cluster. In the base game it resets when the reaction ends; in free spins it carries over. Big Time Gaming says that when two gold wilds both join a win, their multipliers multiply each other, so 3x and 4x together give 12x. This is the main source of the game's large results. See what is a multiplier in slots.
Is Star Clusters Megaclusters high volatility?
It's rated medium–high volatility. Most spins end after one or two small wins or none at all, while a smaller number of long reactions and bonuses deliver much of the return. That means a session budget can shrink quickly during quiet spells. Choosing a lower stake stretches the same money over more spins, though it doesn't change the house edge. Our guide to slot volatility and budgets shows how to plan for it.
Can I play Star Clusters Megaclusters for free?
Yes, provided the casino has confirmed your age first; demos have been locked behind that check in Britain since May 2019. Splits, reactions and gold wilds turn up as often as in the cash game, so a demo session is an honest preview of how rarely the long chains arrive. Demo credits can't be withdrawn, and a lucky demo session says nothing about what will happen with real money. Read demo slots vs real money slots for the differences that do exist.
Who makes Star Clusters Megaclusters?
Big Time Gaming, founded in Sydney in 2011, makes the game. The studio is best known for inventing Megaways, and it also created the Megaclusters and Megapays mechanics. A deal for Evolution to buy Big Time Gaming was announced in April 2021, which makes it a sister studio of NetEnt and Red Tiger. Star Clusters came out in 2020. Our Big Time Gaming page lists its other games on this site.
Why does the board get bigger during a spin?
The board grows because every tile involved in a winning cluster splits into four smaller tiles. A 4×4 board of 16 large tiles can become 25, 31 or more positions as wins chain together, up to the equivalent of 8×8 in the base game. More positions give more chances for new clusters, which is why long chains tend to build. It all resets at the start of the next base-game spin, so the size carries no advantage forward. See cascading reels for the related refill mechanic.
Can I buy the bonus in Star Clusters in the UK?
No. Versions supplied to UK-licensed casinos don't include a bonus buy, so free spins only arrive through long reactions in normal play. No Commission rule with a date confirms a ban, but it's how games are provided in Great Britain. It also means each go costs only your chosen stake, within the £5 cap for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18–24s. More background is on bonus buy in the UK.
