The Starburst Galaxy slot is NetEnt's 2024 reinvention of its best-known game: a 5×5 grid of gems that grows to 7×7 when the Galaxy Star feature lands a giant 3×3 Starburst wild. The top published RTP is 96%, a 94% version also exists, and the max win is 25,000× stake.
No reels or paylines in the usual sense: wins are lines of three or more matching gems across or down.
Wins charge a Feature Generator; enough of them trigger Galaxy Star on a 7×7 grid.
Top RTP is 96%; the 94% version costs 50% more on average.
Max win is 25,000× stake, against 500× for the original Starburst.
There is no classic free-spins round; the big features come from the generator and scatters.

Why the Starburst Galaxy slot is not just Starburst again
The original Starburst is a 5×3 game with 10 lines that pay both ways, expanding wilds that hold for a respin, a low-volatility profile, a 96.09% RTP and a 500× cap. It is famous for being gentle. Starburst Galaxy keeps the gems, the colours and the wild's name, and almost nothing else.
The new game is a grid slot. Symbols sit on a 5×5 board and pay when three or more line up horizontally or vertically. Wins clear away, new gems fall, and progress builds towards bigger features. The ceiling jumps to 25,000×, fifty times the original's. If you loved Starburst for its calm, this is a different proposition; if you liked Starburst XXXtreme for its volatility, the comparison is closer.

How the Starburst Galaxy slot machine forms wins
Each paid spin fills the 5×5 grid with gems chosen by the RNG. A win is three or more of the same gem in an unbroken straight line, across a row or down a column, anywhere on the board. There are no paylines to follow and no left-to-right rule. That makes it a grid slot machine rather than a reel slot in the traditional sense.
After each win, the winning gems vanish, the rest drop down and new ones fall in from the top, the same cascading idea used in many modern games. The twist is that a Starburst wild is dropped into the middle of each cleared line, so one win tends to seed the next. Where two winning lines cross, a wild is placed at the crossing.
A simple grid example
Picture row three reading: purple, purple, purple, red, yellow. The three purples pay as a three-gem line. They are removed, a wild appears where the middle purple was, and new gems fall into the gaps. If the new arrivals make another line through the wild, that is a second win from the same stake. Every cascade belongs to the spin you paid for.
Pay the stake; the RNG fills the 5×5 grid.
Any line of three or more matching gems across or down pays.
Winning gems are removed and a wild is placed in the middle of each line.
Gems drop and new ones fall in; new lines pay again.
Each win also charges the Feature Generator.
The Feature Generator: five modifiers in order
Successive wins in a sequence feed a meter. Each time it fills, the game awards the next modifier on a fixed list. The rules describe them in this order:
Starburst Galaxy Feature Generator (order per the game rules)
Step
Modifier
What it does
1
Destroy
Removes one or more random gem types from the grid
2
Random Wilds
Turns several paying gems into Starburst wilds
3
Expanding Wilds
Each Starburst wild becomes a vertical stack of three
4
Line Transform
Fills a row or column with one random paying gem
5
Upgrade, then Galaxy Star
Upgrades a gem type, and reaching the end triggers Galaxy Star
Because the generator needs a long run of wins in a single sequence, the later steps are reached far less often than the first. That is how the game holds back its biggest moments. Each modifier is part of the published maths, so none of them pushes the return above the RTP. The reel modifiers explainer shows how features like these are priced in.
Starburst Galaxy bonus: the Galaxy Star 7×7 feature
Galaxy Star is the game's main event. The board grows from 5×5 to 7×7, increasing the positions from 25 to 49, and a 3×3 Starburst wild lands at a random spot. A nine-square wild can complete lines in several directions at once. After wins resolve, the cleared lines leave further wilds behind, and any remaining generator features fire.
A Galaxy metre counts wins during the feature; filling it retriggers Galaxy Star. The rules give the exact threshold. Separately, three scatters in a normal spin start a smaller Mega Star feature with a 2×2 wild, and some scatters can carry multipliers that apply to wins for the rest of the sequence. These are the routes that make the 25,000× cap possible.
Starburst Galaxy has no traditional free-spins round. Searches for "Starburst Galaxy free spins" usually mean casino offers, not an in-game feature.
Starburst Galaxy RTP and what 100 spins cost
The published top RTP is 96%, a house edge of 4%. A 94% version also exists, with a 6% edge. That is a 50% higher average cost for the same game, and the casino decides which you get.

These are long-run averages. With a 25,000× ceiling and features that need long win sequences, real sessions swing far more than the table suggests. We don't hold a verified volatility rating, so check the game's info panel. Our RTP variants explainer shows how two versions of one game can exist side by side.
£2 stake (the cap for 18 to 24-year-olds): £50,000
£5 stake (the cap for over-25s, if the casino's range allows it): £125,000
This figure is only realistic through Galaxy Star with heavy multipliers. The original game's 500× cap tells you how much the maths has been reshaped: more of the return is held in rare events, less in everyday wins.
Is Starburst Galaxy worth playing?
Advantages
Fresh grid design rather than a straight re-skin
Wilds left behind by wins make chains easy to follow
Clear, visible progress towards the main feature
Much higher ceiling than the original
Drawbacks
Far swingier than the classic Starburst
94% version is common and costs more on average
Main feature needs a long run of wins in one sequence
Rules take time to learn
It suits adults who like grid and cascade games and want the Starburst look with more at stake. If you want the original's steadier feel, stick with Starburst or try Twin Spin Megaways. For similar mechanics, our page on cluster pays slot machines covers games that pay on groups rather than lines.
Starburst Galaxy myths
"The generator remembers progress between spins." It builds within a winning sequence; check the rules for when it resets.
"A full board of wilds means a feature is coming." Every spin is independent and pre-decided.
"The 94% version pays bigger features." It simply returns less on average.
"Starburst games are always low risk." The original is; this one is built very differently.
Starburst Galaxy demo and help screen
A Starburst Galaxy demo is free demo play after age verification, a rule in force in Great Britain since May 2019. It is a good way to see how the generator fills before staking real money. Our demo slots guide covers the limits of demo play.
To check which RTP your casino uses, open the menu, choose the game rules, and scroll to the theoretical return. If it says 94%, the average cost is 6p per £1 staked rather than 4p. Our how to find a slot's RTP guide has more detail.
UK rules for the Starburst Galaxy online slot
Versions elsewhere include autoplay, two turbo modes and paid Elevate options such as bought scatters or direct Galaxy Star entry. In Great Britain none of those are available. Since 31 October 2021, online slots have had no autoplay, no turbo, and a 2.5-second minimum game cycle, as the Gambling Commission's summary of the RTS changes (opens in a new tab) records. Our autoplay ban page explains why.
Stake limits are £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds; see our page on the £2 stake limit. NetEnt is a long-standing slot provider in the UK market.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Starburst Galaxy?
The top published RTP is 96%, and a 94% version also exists. On £100 staked, the average long-run cost is £4 on the higher version and £6 on the lower, so the gap is bigger than it sounds. Casinos choose the version and the graphics are identical, so check the game rules before you play. Our page on what counts as a good RTP puts 96% in context.
What is the Starburst Galaxy max win?
The maximum win is 25,000 times your stake. That is £5,000 at 20p, £25,000 at £1, £50,000 at the £2 limit for players aged 18 to 24, and £125,000 at £5 for over-25s, where the casino allows that stake. It is reached only through the Galaxy Star feature with large multipliers, and most sessions see nothing close. Our max win glossary entry explains how caps work.
Does Starburst Galaxy have free spins?
Not in the traditional sense. The game has no standard free-spins round; its big features are Galaxy Star, triggered through the Feature Generator, and Mega Star, triggered by three scatters. When people search for Starburst Galaxy free spins, they usually mean casino offers that give free spins on selected games, and those offers may not include this title. Our free spins on slots page explains how offers work.
How do you win on Starburst Galaxy?
Three or more matching gems in an unbroken straight line, across a row or down a column, anywhere on the 5×5 grid, form a win. There are no paylines and wins don't have to start on the left. Winning gems are removed, a Starburst wild is placed in the middle of each line, and new gems fall in for a possible further win. For more, our page on grid slot machines explains how grid games differ from reel slots.
What triggers the Galaxy Star feature?
Galaxy Star comes at the end of the Feature Generator, which fills as you string wins together in a single sequence. Reaching the final step expands the grid to 7×7 and lands a 3×3 Starburst wild. A Galaxy metre during the feature can retrigger it. Because it needs a long sequence of wins, it is uncommon. It is built into the game's RTP, so it doesn't add return beyond the published figure. See our page on expanding reels.
Is Starburst Galaxy like the original Starburst?
Only in its look. The original is a 5×3 game with 10 lines paying both ways, a 96.09% RTP, low volatility and a 500× cap. Starburst Galaxy is a 5×5 grid with line matches, cascades, a feature generator and a 25,000× cap. Expect much bigger swings. If you enjoy the classic's steady rhythm, the new game may feel unfamiliar. Our Starburst vs Starburst XXXtreme comparison shows how the family has been stretched.
Can I play a Starburst Galaxy demo in the UK?
Yes, at casinos that offer demos, once you have verified your age. Since May 2019, UK-licensed operators must check you are 18 or over before allowing free-to-play gambling games, so you will normally need an account. Demo credits are not real money and can't be withdrawn. A demo helps you learn the grid and generator, but short demo sessions won't show the game's true long-run behaviour. Our demo slots guide explains more.
What is the highest stake on Starburst Galaxy in the UK?
The legal maximum is £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over, since 9 April 2025, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24, since 21 May 2025. The casino and the game may set lower maximums, so check the bet panel. Your stake doesn't affect the RTP or how often features trigger; it only scales the size of wins and losses. Our online slot stake limits page has the details.
Can I buy Galaxy Star in the UK?
No. In other markets, NetEnt's Elevate options let players pay a multiple of their stake for extra scatters or direct entry to Galaxy Star. Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos don't include feature buys, so the only route in is normal play at your normal stake. Autoplay and turbo are also absent in the UK version. Our guide to bonus buys in the UK explains the background.
