Grid slot machines replace the familiar row of reels with a square or near-square board, usually 5×5 to 8×8, and pay when symbols connect across it rather than along fixed lines. This guide shows how the board is read, which win rules sit on it, what the maths looks like and how UK rules shape the games.
A grid is a layout, not a win rule: clusters, rows and columns, ways and collect mechanics all run on grids.
More positions (49 on a 7×7, 64 on an 8×8) mean each symbol pays very little alone; value comes from chains and multipliers.
Most grid slots in our verified data are high volatility, with RTPs between 94% and 96.83%.
At the £2 limit for 18–24s, a 25,000x max win would be £50,000; at £5 it would be £125,000, but such results are extremely rare.

What are grid slot machines?
A grid slot machine is an online slot whose playing area is a block of cells laid out in rows and columns of similar length, such as 7 across by 7 down, instead of the classic five reels read from left to right. Every cell shows one symbol, and the game checks the whole board for connected groups, straight lines or special symbols after each spin. It sits in our wider family of slot machine types, alongside reel-based video slots.
The word ‘grid’ describes shape, not payout logic. That matters because people often treat grid slots and cluster pays slot machines as the same thing. Most grid games do use clusters, but others pay three in a row or column, count ways across a growing board, or let a character walk across the cells collecting gems. Knowing which rule a game uses is the first job when you open its help screen.
Behind the picture, a grid slot works like any other online slot. A certified random number generator picks the symbols for every cell before the animation starts, and the paytable converts what lands into a win. Nothing about the square shape makes the game fairer, looser or more generous; the published RTP and volatility tell you that.
Grid sizes: how many cells each layout has
The number of cells drives almost everything else about a grid slot. A 5×3 reel slot shows 15 symbols. A 7×7 grid shows 49, more than three times as many, so the designer has to make each individual symbol worth far less, or the game would pay out too much. Larger grids also give more room for chain reactions, which is where most of the action happens.

Some games start small and grow. Misery Mining begins as a 3×3 board and can open up to 7×7, with ways rising from 27 to 823,543. Starburst Galaxy moves from 5×5 to 7×7 during its Galaxy Star feature. Growth like this is the grid version of expanding reels: more cells, more ways for symbols to connect, and a sharper swing between quiet and busy spins.
Four ways a grid slot machine can pay
1. Clusters
The most common rule. A win forms when a set number of matching symbols, usually five or more, touch each other horizontally or vertically (diagonals rarely count). Reactoonz and Jammin Jars both pay on clusters of five or more; Tome of Madness pays from four.
2. Rows and columns
A handful of grids pay three or more matching symbols in a straight horizontal or vertical line, a bit like a match-three puzzle. Moon Princess 100 and Finn and the Swirly Spin work this way, the latter on a spiral-shaped 5×5 board.
3. Ways across a grid
Valley of the Gods uses a 5×5 board but counts wins as ways, starting at 45 and rising to 3,125 as blocked cells are cleared. The logic matches ways-to-win slot machines, only on a square frame.
4. Collect mechanics
Pirots by ELK Studios has no paylines at all. Bird characters move around a 5×5 board, expanding to 8×8, and collect gems of matching colour. Its listed RTP is 94%, lower than most grid slots in our data, which shows why the help screen is worth reading before you play.
How cascades and multipliers drive a grid slot
Almost every grid slot uses cascading reels, also called tumbles or avalanches. Winning symbols vanish, the ones above drop into the gaps and new symbols fall from the top. If the refilled board forms another win, it pays and the process repeats. A single paid stake can therefore produce a chain of wins.
Studios then attach rewards to those chains. Sugar Rush leaves a marker on any cell that wins twice and doubles a multiplier on that spot each time it wins again. Reactoonz charges a meter as symbols explode. Jammin Jars uses jar wilds that move and grow a multiplier. These are all forms of multipliers that build up during one paid spin, so the size of a win depends mainly on how long the chain lasts.
A worked example on a 7×7 grid slot
The figures below are illustrative, not taken from any real paytable. Picture a 7×7 grid slot at a 20p stake where a cluster of five low-value sweets pays 0.2x (4p) and a cluster of eight pays 0.5x (10p).
You press spin and the 20p stake leaves your balance. The RNG has already set all 49 symbols.
Six red sweets touch in the lower-left corner. That is a cluster of six, paying, say, 0.3x: 6p.
The six sweets disappear, symbols above fall down and six new ones drop in from the top.
The refill joins eight green sweets together: another 10p. Your running total for the spin is 16p.
Two of those cells have now won twice, so a 2x marker appears on each in a multiplier-spot game.
The next refill forms no cluster, the chain ends and 16p is added to your balance. You staked 20p and got 16p back: a net loss of 4p, which UK rules stop the game from celebrating as a win.
This is why grid slots feel busy but often pay less than the stake on ordinary spins. Small clusters are common; big returns need long cascades landing on multiplied cells, which is rare.
Grid slot RTP and what 100 spins cost on average
RTP is a long-run average over millions of spins, explained on our RTP page. Any short session can land far above or below it. With that caveat, the average cost of play is simply the amount staked multiplied by the house edge (100% minus RTP).

Several of these games are offered at more than one RTP setting, and the casino chooses which to run. Sugar Rush 1000 and Gemix are both listed with lower versions, so the number that counts is the one in the game’s own rules at your casino, not one quoted in a review. Our guide on how to find a slot’s RTP shows where to look.
Why most grid slot machines are high volatility
Of the grid slots in our verified facts, the large majority are rated high or very high volatility. The reason is structural. With 49 or 64 cells, low-value clusters land often but each pays a fraction of the stake, so the game holds back most of its return for chains that build multipliers. Those chains are uncommon, so results cluster around small losses with occasional large spikes.
Gemix is the exception in our list, rated medium. If you want a calmer grid experience, a medium-rated game or a smaller 5×5 board is a better fit than an 8×8 with growing multipliers. Our page on low volatility slot machines covers the trade-off in more detail.
Max wins on grid slots at UK stake limits
A max win is a cap on what one spin or feature can pay, stated as a multiple of the stake. UK players aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 per spin, and 18–24s up to £2, under the online slot stake limits. The table converts each cap to pounds. These are ceilings, not targets: very few spins ever reach them.
Long cascades take time to animate, but a UK grid slot still has to respect the slot game design rules in force since 31 October 2021. Each spin must take at least 2.5 seconds, there is no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop button, and a return equal to or below the stake can’t be dressed up with win sounds. The Commission’s summary of the changes to its technical standards (opens in a new tab) sets out the wording.
Many grid slots are sold elsewhere with a feature buy that jumps straight to free spins. Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos don’t offer that option, as our page on bonus buy in the UK explains, so the bonus can only arrive through normal play.
Grid slot machines in pubs, arcades and casinos
Grid games are mainly an online format. UK gaming machines in pubs, arcades, bingo halls and betting shops are still dominated by reel-based fruit machines and multi-game cabinets. Where a grid-style game does appear on a land-based machine, it must sit inside that machine’s category. A Category C machine is limited to a £1 stake and a £100 prize, and Category B3 to £2 and £500, according to the Gambling Commission’s gaming machine categories (opens in a new tab).
That cap changes the maths completely. A 20,000x online max win is impossible on a pub machine because £100 is the ceiling. See our guide to UK slot machine categories for the full list, and remember that Category B and C machines are for adults aged 18 and over.
Are grid slots worth playing? Pros, cons and who they suit
Advantages
Chain reactions mean one stake can produce several wins in a row.
Clear visual logic: you can see which symbols touched and why they paid.
Many grid slots in our data have RTPs above 96%.
Wide choice of win rules, from clusters to collect mechanics.
Drawbacks
Mostly high volatility, so long losing runs are normal.
Busy animations can make small sub-stake returns feel like wins.
Several titles run at lower RTP settings at some casinos.
Max wins depend on rare multiplier chains, not regular play.
Grid slots suit adults who enjoy watching a board develop and accept that most of the value sits in rare chains. If you prefer frequent small hits, a low-volatility reel slot will usually feel steadier for the same budget. Either way, set a session budget first.
Grid slot myths and facts
Myth: a nearly full board means a big cascade is coming. Fact: every refill is drawn by the RNG independently; the previous layout doesn’t predict the next.
Myth: bigger grids pay more. Fact: more cells mean lower pays per symbol; RTP decides the long-run return, not grid size.
Myth: you can spot ‘hot’ cells. Fact: multiplier spots exist only within a spin or feature and reset as the rules say.
Myth: a grid slot is the same as a pays-anywhere slot. Fact: pays anywhere slot machines such as Sweet Bonanza use reels and rows and pay 8+ symbols anywhere, with no need to touch.
Where to play grid slot machines online in the UK
Grid titles come from studios such as Play’n GO, Pragmatic Play and Push Gaming, and casino lobbies change, so search a site for the game you want rather than assuming it is there. The offers below are our partners’ current welcome deals; all are for new customers aged 18+, and terms apply.

Frequently asked questions
What is a grid slot machine?
A grid slot machine is an online slot that shows its symbols on a square or near-square board, such as 7×7, instead of a row of reels. The game checks the whole board for winning groups after each spin, usually using clusters of five or more touching symbols, though some grids pay rows, columns, ways or collect mechanics. Cascades refill the board after each win, so one stake can produce several payouts. Our cluster pays guide covers the most common rule in detail.
Are grid slots the same as cluster pays slots?
No. A grid is a layout, while cluster pays is a rule for counting wins. Most grid slots do use clusters, but Moon Princess 100 pays three in a row or column, Valley of the Gods counts ways across a 5×5 board, and Pirots uses birds that collect gems with no paylines. Equally, NetEnt’s Aloha! Cluster Pays uses clusters on a 6×5 reel layout. The help screen states which rule applies. See cluster pays vs paylines for a side-by-side comparison.
How does a cluster win work on a 7×7 grid slot?
A cluster win forms when enough matching symbols, usually five or more, touch each other horizontally or vertically anywhere on the 49-cell board. The pay depends on the symbol and the cluster size, shown in the paytable. After paying, the winning symbols disappear, others fall into the gaps and new symbols drop in, which can form another cluster. In Reactoonz, for example, clusters of five or more pay. Our Reactoonz page walks through that game’s meter and features.
What is the RTP of grid slot machines?
There is no single RTP for grid slots; each game publishes its own. In our verified facts, grid titles range from 94% for Pirots to 96.83% for Jammin Jars and Gemix, with most around 96.5%. Several are sold at more than one RTP setting, and the casino chooses the version, so the figure inside the game’s help screen is the one that applies. RTP is a long-run average, not a session forecast. Read what is a good RTP for a slot for context.
Why do grid slots often pay less than my stake?
Because small clusters are common but individually worth very little. On a 7×7 board with 49 cells, matching groups of five appear often, so each one may return a fraction of the stake, for example 4p on a 20p spin. The game saves most of its value for long cascades and multipliers. UK rules since 31 October 2021 stop games celebrating a return equal to or below the stake. See our page on losses disguised as wins.
What is the biggest max win on a grid slot?
Among the grid slots in our verified facts, Misery Mining lists the highest cap at 70,000 times the stake, followed by Sugar Rush 1000 at 25,000x and Starburst Galaxy at 25,000x. At the £2 limit for 18–24-year-olds, 25,000x would be £50,000; at £5 it would be £125,000. A max win is a ceiling reached extremely rarely, not a likely outcome. Our guide to max win caps explains how studios set them.
Can I play grid slot machines for free in the UK?
You can play many grid slots in demo mode, but only after age verification, which UK-licensed sites have required since May 2019. Demo play uses virtual credits, so nothing you win is real, and nothing you lose costs money. It is a sensible way to see how a board’s cascades and multipliers behave before staking. Our demo slots guide explains where demos appear and how they differ from real-money play.
Are there grid slots on pub fruit machines?
Grid-style games are rare on UK pub machines, which are mostly reel-based Category C fruit machines. Any game that does run on a pub machine is limited to a £1 stake and a £100 prize, so it cannot offer the large multipliers seen online. Pubs have an automatic entitlement to two Category C or D machines, and Category C play is for adults aged 18 and over. Our pub slot machines page explains what you will find.
Can I buy the bonus on grid slots in the UK?
No. Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos don’t offer a bonus buy, even when the same game has one in other markets. That means free spins and other features on grid slots like Sugar Rush or Jammin Jars can only trigger through normal paid spins. The UK version also has no autoplay and a minimum 2.5 seconds per spin. Our page on bonus buy in the UK explains the position in full.
Which grid slot is best for a small budget?
No grid slot is best for everyone, but a medium-volatility game such as Gemix, rated medium with a 96.83% top RTP in our facts, tends to give steadier results than a very high volatility title like Sugar Rush 1000. Combine that with a low stake: 100 spins at 10p is £10 staked. Whatever you choose, losses are likely over time. Our guide to best slots for small budgets covers stake sizing.
