Irish themed slots

Irish themed slots are slot machines dressed in Irish folklore: leprechauns, rainbows, pots of gold, four-leaf clovers and horseshoes. The theme is about luck, but the maths isn’t; each game’s RTP and volatility come from its model, and in our data they range from about 94% to 96.62%. Barcrest’s Rainbow Riches series is the best-documented example here.

Key takeaways

  • Lucky symbols such as clovers and horseshoes are decoration; they don’t change the odds.
  • Rainbow Riches comes in several versions with very different maths: 500× max win on the original, 12,500× on Megaways.
  • Some Barcrest games link RTP to the stake, so the help screen may list more than one figure.
  • Northern Ireland has its own gambling law, separate from the Great Britain rules described on this site.

What are Irish themed slots?

An Irish themed slot takes its look from folklore and good-luck imagery associated with Ireland. The leprechaun, a small trickster said to hide gold at the end of the rainbow, is the usual mascot. Around him come rainbows, pots of gold, shamrocks and four-leaf clovers, horseshoes, gold coins and green hills, often with fiddle or pipe music. The imagery comes from storybook symbolism rather than everyday Ireland.

Theme is the only thing these games share. Underneath, an Irish themed slot can be a 20-line video slot, a Megaways game or a grid game, each with its own RTP and volatility. That makes them a theme family rather than a mechanical type like the Megaways slot machines or cluster pays slot machines in our types of slot machine hub.

Irish slot symbols and what they usually do

Every game sets its own paytable, so the roles below are typical patterns, not rules. Check the paytable before relying on any symbol.

Rainbow Riches: the long-running Irish themed slot series

Barcrest is a British machine maker with roots in the Manchester area, two staff in 1968 and a first game, Invader, in 1970. It was owned by IGT from 1998 and is now part of Light & Wonder, whose best-known UK slot is Rainbow Riches. The series runs from 2006, and three versions are in our verified data.

Rainbow Riches Megaways96%High6 reels of 2–7 symbols plus a top row, 324 to 117,649 ways12,500×2019

The versions suit different players. The original Rainbow Riches is a medium-volatility game with a low 500× ceiling, so its wins are capped and its sessions steadier. Rainbow Riches Megaways switches to a high-volatility engine with up to 117,649 ways and a 12,500× ceiling. Pick ’n’ Mix keeps the original layout and lets the player choose bonus features, with an RTP that depends on stake. Our Rainbow Riches comparison puts the two best-known versions side by side.

Why some Irish themed slots change RTP with your stake

Most online slots return the same percentage whatever you bet. Some Barcrest games, a maker with a long history in British venue machines, instead list different RTPs for different stake bands. Our data records this for Rainbow Riches Pick ’n’ Mix (about 94%–96%) and for Barcrest’s Reels of Gold (up to 96%). Such a game uses a different maths setting for each band, and the help screen lists them.

The Gambling Commission’s rules on game information (RTS 3) (opens in a new tab) say the return or likelihood of winning must be shown before play, so band figures shouldn’t be hidden. To see why the band matters, take two illustrative figures. On £20 staked, a 96% band costs 80p on average and a 94% band costs £1.20. Over a year of regular play, that 2-point gap adds up.

Other Irish themed slots in our verified data

Lucky Leprechaun, from Games Global (originally a Microgaming title), was released in 2015. It is listed at 96.33% RTP with medium volatility, on 5 × 3 reels with 20 paylines and a 5,000× max win. That makes it a higher-RTP, higher-ceiling alternative to the original Rainbow Riches with similar volatility.

Finn and the Swirly Spin, from NetEnt in 2017, draws on Irish folklore with a mischievous character called Finn. It plays very differently: a 5 × 5 grid that resolves in a spiral, paying for three or more matching symbols in a row or column. Its top version is listed at 96.62% with low to medium volatility, the highest RTP among the Irish themed slots in our data.

How Irish themed slots usually play: picks, wheels and free spins

Treasure-hunt stories suit a few feature types. A pick me bonus lets you choose pots or tiles to reveal prizes; a bonus wheel spins for a cash amount or a feature; a trail moves a character towards the gold, much like a fruit machine feature trail; and free spins add wilds or multipliers. Megaways remakes add changing reel heights.

None of these makes a game more generous. Choices in a pick bonus are balanced in the maths, so a different pick doesn’t improve the long-run return. The features decide how the RTP is delivered: lots of small bonus prizes on a medium-volatility game, or rarer, larger ones on a high-volatility remake.

Irish themed slots: cost per session and max win at UK stakes

Spins on British online slots stop at £5 for over-25s and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds. Below, each game’s average cost over 100 spins at 20p (£20 staked) sits beside its listed max win at 20p and at £2.

The ceiling tells you how the game behaves as much as what it can pay. A 500× cap means most of the RTP comes back in small and medium wins; a 12,500× cap means more is held for rare events, so quiet spells are longer. Our explainer on slot machine volatility shows the link.

Irish themes on UK machines, and the Northern Ireland difference

Barcrest built its name on British venue machines before online slots existed, and themed games are a familiar sight on pub, arcade and betting-shop cabinets. In Great Britain the machine’s category, not its theme, sets the limits: Category C pub machines take up to £1 a spin with a £100 top prize, and B3 machines in adult gaming centres, bingo halls and betting shops take £2 with a £500 prize, according to the Commission’s gaming machine categories guidance (opens in a new tab). Both are 18+ only.

Northern Ireland is different. Machines there fall under the Betting, Gaming, Lotteries and Amusements (Northern Ireland) Order 1985; a 2022 amending Act took effect on 1 October 2023, adding among other things an offence covering under-18s and gaming machines. The Department for Communities’ gambling pages (opens in a new tab) set out who licenses what. Our page on gaming machines in Northern Ireland explains the differences.

How to choose an Irish themed slot, step by step

  1. Decide whether you want a steady session or the chance of a large, rare prize.
  2. For steady play, shortlist medium or low-to-medium volatility games such as Lucky Leprechaun or Finn and the Swirly Spin.
  3. For a higher ceiling, look at high-volatility remakes such as Rainbow Riches Megaways, and expect long quiet spells.
  4. Open the help screen and check the RTP; on stake-linked games, find the figure for your stake band.
  5. Try a demo after age verification to see how the bonus features play.
  6. Set a session budget and a time limit before the first real spin.

Lucky charms and Irish slot myths

A theme built on luck invites superstition. Here is what the evidence says.

  • “A clover or horseshoe on the reels means a lucky spin is coming.” Symbols are drawn by the RNG; their meaning in folklore has no effect.
  • “Playing on St Patrick’s Day is luckier.” The maths is the same every day of the year.
  • “The leprechaun appears more when the game is about to pay.” Animations follow results; they don’t predict them.
  • “Rainbow Riches pays more in pubs than online.” Any venue machine is a separate game under its category’s limits; compare displayed RTPs rather than assuming.
  • “A lucky charm in your pocket helps.” Nothing outside the game influences an RNG; see can you trick a slot machine.

Are Irish themed slots worth playing? Pros and cons

Advantages

  • Wide choice of volatility within one theme, from steady to very swingy.
  • Familiar British favourites with simple, readable features.
  • Several titles in our data sit at 96% or above.

Drawbacks

  • The original Rainbow Riches has a 95.00% RTP and a 500× cap.
  • Stake-linked RTP on some games needs checking at your stake.
  • Luck-themed imagery can encourage superstition.
  • Several similar-looking versions make it easy to pick the wrong one.

Irish themed slots suit players who like a familiar, light-hearted theme and are happy to compare versions. Players chasing a high ceiling should look at the Megaways remake and accept its volatility.

Frequently asked questions

What are Irish themed slots?

Irish themed slots are slot machines whose artwork and sound draw on Irish folklore and luck imagery: leprechauns, rainbows, pots of gold, four-leaf clovers and horseshoes. The theme doesn’t change how they work; each game’s RTP, volatility and features come from its own maths model. In our data they range from about 94% to 96.62% RTP. Our slot machine symbols guide explains where lucky symbols came from.

Which Irish slot is best known in the UK?

Rainbow Riches by Barcrest is the long-running Irish series in our data. The series dates from 2006, and it is the best-known UK slot of Light & Wonder, which owns Barcrest. It now comes in several versions, including the original at 95.00% RTP, Pick ’n’ Mix with a stake-linked RTP, and a high-volatility Megaways remake. Our Rainbow Riches page covers the original game in detail.

What is the RTP of Rainbow Riches?

The original Rainbow Riches is listed at 95.00% RTP in our data, with medium volatility, 20 paylines and a 500× max win. Rainbow Riches Megaways is listed at 96%, and Pick ’n’ Mix at about 94% to 96% depending on stake. Casinos may run different settings, so always confirm the figure in the game’s help screen. Our guide on what a good RTP is puts these numbers in context.

Does Rainbow Riches RTP change with the stake?

On some versions, yes. Our data lists Rainbow Riches Pick ’n’ Mix at about 94% to 96%, varying with the stake, which means the game uses a different maths setting for each stake band. The help screen shows the figure for each band. Most other online slots, including Rainbow Riches Megaways in our data, list a single RTP. Our explainer on RTP variants shows how these versions work.

Who makes Rainbow Riches?

Rainbow Riches is made by Barcrest, a British machine maker with roots in the Manchester area that began in 1968 with two employees and launched Invader, its first game, in 1970. IGT owned Barcrest from 1998, and it is now part of Light & Wonder, the company formerly called Scientific Games. The Rainbow Riches series runs from 2006. Our Barcrest provider page has more on the company.

Is Lucky Leprechaun a high RTP slot?

It is slightly above the common range. Lucky Leprechaun, a Games Global title originally released by Microgaming in 2015, is listed at 96.33% RTP with medium volatility, 20 paylines and a 5,000× max win. On 100 spins at 20p, the average cost at that RTP is about 73p, though any session can differ widely. For games above 96.5%, see our page on high RTP slot machines.

Do lucky symbols like four-leaf clovers improve your odds?

No. Every symbol position is chosen by the random number generator, and a clover or horseshoe has no influence beyond what the paytable says it pays. Folklore meaning is part of the artwork only. Spins are independent, so a run of lucky-looking symbols says nothing about the next spin. The four-leaf clover symbol page explains where the image came from and how slots use it.

Can people in Northern Ireland play Irish themed slots online?

Northern Ireland has separate gambling law, the 1985 Order amended in 2022, and no full framework for regulating online gambling. The rules on this site, such as the £5 and £2 stake limits, are set by the Gambling Commission for Great Britain. Some offers also exclude Northern Ireland; PlayOJO’s welcome offer is one. Check each casino’s terms. For the land-based rules, see Northern Ireland gaming machines.

What is the max win on Rainbow Riches Megaways?

Rainbow Riches Megaways is listed at a 12,500× max win in our data, which is £25,000 on a £2 spin and £62,500 at the £5 maximum stake for players aged 25 and over. The game is rated high volatility, with 324 to 117,649 ways, so prizes near the ceiling are very rare. It is listed at 96% RTP. Our Rainbow Riches Megaways guide explains the features.

Are Irish themed slots good for low stakes?

Several are, because medium and low-to-medium volatility titles tend to spread wins out. The original Rainbow Riches, Lucky Leprechaun and Finn and the Swirly Spin all sit in that band in our data. High-volatility remakes such as Rainbow Riches Megaways can drain a small budget faster. Check each game’s minimum stake in the help screen. See penny slot machines for what low stakes really cost.
