The Pirots slot is ELK Studios' 2023 game in which coloured birds fly around a 5×5 grid collecting gems of their own colour, with no paylines or clusters at all. Feature symbols expand the grid up to 8×8, upgrade gems and lead to a bonus game. The RTP is 94% and the max win is 10,000 times the stake.
ELK Studios released Pirots in 2023 on a 5×5 grid that can expand to 8×8.
There are no paylines: birds collect gems of matching colour and each collected gem pays its value (ELK's CollectR mechanic).
Collected symbols fill a feature meter that awards chests of feature symbols.
The RTP is 94%, lower than many slots, so the average cost is about £6 per £100 staked.
Max win is 10,000x: £20,000 at the £2 limit for 18–24s, £50,000 at £5.

Pirots slot: a game with no paylines
Most slots pay when symbols line up. Pirots doesn't. ELK Studios, the Stockholm studio founded in 2013 and licensed in Great Britain under Gambling Commission account 40844, built it around a mechanic it calls CollectR. Coloured birds sit on the grid, gems of different colours fill the other squares, and each bird travels around collecting the gems that match it. Every gem collected pays its own value.
ELK says plainly that the win doesn't depend on how many gems are picked up in a pattern, only on the value of each one collected. That makes Pirots one of the more unusual grid slot machines, and the start of a series that now includes Pirots 2 and Pirots 3.
How the Pirots slot machine works: CollectR step by step
Set your stake and press spin. The RNG has already decided the full result.
Gems and birds land on the 5×5 grid.
Each bird moves to collect gems of its own colour that it can reach.
Each collected gem pays its value, which depends on its upgrade level and your stake.
Collected gems are removed, and new symbols fall into the spaces.
Every collected symbol adds to the feature meter; when it fills, chests of feature symbols are awarded.
The round continues while birds have gems to collect, then ends.
A worked example (illustrative values)
Imagine a £1 stake. A red bird can reach three red gems worth 10p, 10p and 30p at their current level, so it collects 50p. A blue bird reaches two blue gems worth 20p each, adding 40p. The total for this step is 90p. New symbols fall in and, if birds can reach more matching gems, collection continues. The exact gem values are in the paytable and change as gems are upgraded; these numbers are only for illustration. Because 90p is less than the £1 stake, UK rules mean the game won't celebrate it.
If you know cash collect games, the idea is related: a collector symbol gathers values from the screen. The difference is that Pirots has several collectors, each matching a colour, and the collection repeats as the grid refills.
Pirots feature symbols and the feature meter
ELK's game page lists six feature symbols, which arrive from the chests the feature meter awards, and which birds can collect.

The meter works like a feature trail: progress builds within a round, and filling it is what brings the feature symbols. The detailed effect of each symbol is in the game's help screen, which is worth reading before you play, because the rules are less familiar than a line slot's.
How the grid grows from 5×5 to 8×8
The grid expander is what turns an ordinary round into a big one. Each expansion adds rows or columns, giving the birds more gems within reach. A larger grid doesn't change the value of an individual gem, but it means more of them, which is where most of the larger results come from.

Pirots bonus game and the free spins question
There's no free spins round in the usual sense. Instead, ELK describes a bonus game triggered when the birds collect three bonus symbols during one game round. When it starts, the grid size, the win level of the gems and the feature meter all carry over from the round that triggered it. That carry-over is the reason a bonus that starts after a big build-up can be worth much more than one that starts on a small grid.
ELK's page also describes X-iter, a menu of five paid modes that start features directly, from a 3x bet up to a 500x Super Bonus. Feature buys aren't offered on slots supplied to Great Britain, so UK players reach the bonus only through normal play. Our page on bonus buy in the UK explains why.
Pirots RTP: why 94% matters
Pirots has an RTP of 94%, which means a house edge of 6%. That's noticeably higher than the 3.5%–4% edge on many popular online slots, and over a long session the difference adds up.

Put another way, for every £100 staked, Pirots is designed to keep about £2 more than a 96% game. That's the price of the mechanic, and worth knowing before you choose it. With medium–high volatility, short sessions can still swing a long way either side of these averages.
Pirots max win at UK stake limits
ELK lists a maximum potential of 10,000 times the bet. Under the Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab), stakes are capped at £5 a spin for adults aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18–24.

Those figures need a maxed-out grid and fully upgraded gems working together, almost always in the bonus. Few players will ever see them.
UK rules that apply to Pirots
Pirots arrived after the online game design rules of 31 October 2021, so the UK version was built to them from the start: no autoplay, a game cycle of at least 2.5 seconds, no turbo or slam-stop, and no celebrating a return that's equal to or smaller than the stake. Your net position is shown throughout. Game rules and the likelihood of winning must be explained, as the Commission's standard on rules and game descriptions (opens in a new tab) requires. Our net position rule page explains the on-screen display.

Pirots demo and myths
You can play a free Pirots demo at many UK casinos after age verification. It's a sensible way to learn how the birds move without staking money. A few myths to set aside: a nearly full meter at the end of one round says nothing about the next; birds aren't steered by anything you do; and a run of small rounds doesn't make a large one due. Each round is decided by the RNG on its own. Read slot machine myths for more.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Pirots RTP?
Pirots has an RTP of 94%, so the long-run house edge is 6%. In money terms, the game is built to hold on to around £6 from each £100 played over the long haul, against about £4 for a 96% title. Your own session can be far above or below that average. Check the help screen at your casino to confirm the figure. Where 94% sits on the scale is explained in what is a good RTP for a slot.
How does the Pirots slot pay out?
Pirots has no paylines or clusters. Coloured birds collect gems of their own colour from the grid, and each gem collected pays its value at its current level and your stake. ELK calls this CollectR. Collected gems disappear, new symbols fall in, and collection continues while birds can reach matching gems. Collected symbols also fill a feature meter. Our page on cash collect features covers similar collector mechanics in other slots.
What is the Pirots max win?
The max win is 10,000 times your stake, according to ELK and our facts. At the £5 maximum for players aged 25 and over that's £50,000; at the £2 limit for 18–24s it's £20,000; at 20p it's £2,000. Reaching it needs a fully expanded grid and highly upgraded gems, usually in the bonus game. It's extremely rare. For how ceilings work, read max win caps.
Does Pirots have free spins?
Pirots doesn't have a traditional free spins round. Its bonus is a game triggered when the birds collect three bonus symbols in a single round. The grid size, gem levels and feature meter carry into the bonus from the round that triggered it, so the starting position can vary a lot. ELK's X-iter modes, which buy features directly, aren't offered in Great Britain. Read how free spins work on slot machines for the more common alternative.
What does the feature meter do in Pirots?
Every symbol a bird collects adds to the feature meter. When the meter is full, the game awards three chests of feature symbols, such as coin wins, wilds, grid expanders, upgrades, transforms and bonus symbols. Those feature symbols then appear on the grid for the birds to collect. The meter carries into the bonus game if one is triggered. It's similar to a feature trail, where progress builds towards a reward.
How big can the Pirots grid get?
The grid starts at 5×5, or 25 positions, and grid expander symbols can grow it to a maximum of 8×8, or 64 positions. That's 2.56 times as many squares, which gives the birds many more gems to collect. The grid size carries into the bonus if it's triggered during the same round. The exact way the grid expands is described in the help screen. For related mechanics, see expanding reels.
Is Pirots the same as Pirots 2?
No. Both are ELK Studios games with a 94% RTP and 10,000x max win in our facts, but Pirots 2 starts on a 6×6 grid, has birds collecting amber rather than gems and is rated high volatility, while Pirots is medium–high on a 5×5 grid. The core collection idea is shared, and both expand to 8×8. Read our full comparison, Pirots vs Pirots 2, for the differences.
Can I play the Pirots demo for free?
Usually, yes: after a UK casino confirms you're over 18 (required for demos since May 2019), a play-money Pirots is often a click away. Birds, chests and the bonus behave just as in the cash game, which makes the demo the easiest place to learn the unfamiliar rules. Demo credits can't be withdrawn, and demo results don't predict real-money play. Our demo slots guide explains what to watch for.
Who makes Pirots?
ELK Studios makes it. The studio was founded in Stockholm in 2013, holds a Gambling Commission licence (account 40844) and has a Malta licence too. Its signature mechanics include Avalanche, Free Drops, walking wilds and X-iter, and its best-known series are Wild Toro and Pirots. Pirots came out in 2023, followed by Pirots 2 and Pirots 3. See our ELK Studios page for more of its games.
Is Pirots fair if the RTP is only 94%?
Yes. A lower RTP doesn't make a game unfair; it makes it more expensive to play over time. Licensed UK sites can only offer it with independently checked random number software, and its returns over time must match the published 94%. The 94% figure tells you the price up front: about £6 per £100 staked on average. Whether that's worth it is your choice. Our page on are slot machines rigged explains testing.
