What is the Raging Rhino slot?

Raging Rhino is an animal-themed slot machine set on the African savannah, with the rhino and other African wildlife as the premium symbols. It was released in 2015 under the WMS brand. Williams / WMS began in Chicago in 1943 and built its name on casino cabinets; it was merged into Scientific Games in 2013, and the group is now called Light & Wonder.

The game is a classic of the ways to win format. There are no paylines to select: any matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the left, pay. Six reels of four symbols give 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 4,096 possible combinations on every spin.

How the Raging Rhino slot machine works

Under the animal artwork, the game follows the same logic as every regulated online slot: a random number generator decides the result the instant you spin, and the reels simply display it.

  1. Choose a stake. In Britain it cannot exceed £5 a spin at age 25 and over, or £2 at 18 to 24.
  2. Press spin. The outcome is drawn on the server.
  3. The six reels stop with four symbols each.
  4. Every combination of matching symbols on adjacent reels from reel 1 is counted, with wilds substituting.
  5. If three or more diamond scatters land, the free spins round begins.
  6. Wins are paid, and after at least 2.5 seconds the next spin can start.

Ways in practice

Ways pay per combination, so stacks matter. Picture two rhinos on reel 1, three on reel 2 and one on reel 3. That is 2 × 3 × 1 = 6 ways for a three-reel rhino win, so the three-rhino prize is paid six times. If reel 4 also held two rhinos, the win would become a four-reel win paid 12 times. This is why stacked premium symbols on a ways game can produce sudden large results.

Raging Rhino symbols, wilds and scatters

Lower-value symbols are card royals; higher-value ones are the animals, with the rhino at the top of the paytable. A sunset tree is the wild. It appears only on reels 2 to 5 and substitutes for every paying symbol, but not the scatter. The diamond is the scatter, paying anywhere and opening the bonus.

Because the wild never lands on reel 1, every win needs a real symbol on the first reel. That small rule shapes the game's rhythm: you often see wild-heavy screens that pay nothing because reel 1 does not match.

Raging Rhino free spins and multiplier wilds

Diamond scatters trigger the free spins. The more you land, the bigger the award.

415+15 spins
520+20 spins
650+50 spins

In the round, any wild that forms part of a win becomes a wild multiplier of 2x or 3x. A win of £2 with one 3x wild pays £6. When several multiplier wilds take part in the same win, the help screen explains how they combine; if they multiply, a 2x and a 3x together give 6x, turning that £2 into £12. Over a long round, with many ways and several wilds, this is where most of the game's large results come from.

Retriggers are generous by design, since two scatters are enough to add spins. That is part of the game's high volatility: a short round can pay very little, while a round that keeps retriggering can run for a long time.

Raging Rhino RTP: what 95.91% costs

The Raging Rhino RTP is 95.91%, which means a house edge of 4.09%. That is slightly lower than the 96% or so common on newer games, and over many spins the difference adds up. The average cost per 100 spins is shown below.

£1£100£95.91£4.09
£2£200£191.82£8.18

One slot database lists a different figure in one place (95.51%), so the version your casino runs may vary. Confirm it in the game's rules. For context, see what counts as a good RTP for a slot.

Raging Rhino max win: what is and isn't published

We have not been able to verify a Raging Rhino max win figure from a reliable source, and the figures quoted around the web conflict. Rather than guess, we suggest you check the help screen, which should state any maximum. What we can show is how a win of a given size scales with your stake, because every prize is a multiple of the stake.

How the same win multiple scales with stake (illustration)
StakeA 100x winA 1,000x win
40p£40£400
£1£100£1,000
£2 (limit for 18–24s)£200£2,000
£5 (limit for 25+)£500£5,000

These are illustrations, not predictions. The guide to max win caps explains why many games set a ceiling.

Raging Rhino and UK land-based machines

WMS spent decades building cabinets for casino floors, and the 6×4, 4,096-ways format of Raging Rhino looks very much like the video slots you find on land-based machines. In Britain, though, venue machines are grouped by category, with stake and prize limits set by law. Online slots are not in these categories.

B1Casinos£5£10,000 (£20,000 linked)

The Gambling Commission's gaming machine categories (opens in a new tab) page sets out the full list. Our explainer on UK slot machine categories and the online vs land-based comparison cover the differences in detail.

Is the Raging Rhino slot worth playing?

Advantages

  • Simple, well-known 4,096-ways format
  • Generous scatter table, up to 50 starting spins
  • Multiplier wilds give free spins real potential
  • Two scatters are enough to retrigger

Drawbacks

  • RTP of 95.91% is slightly below many newer slots
  • High volatility: long dry spells are common
  • No wilds on reel 1, so many near-wins pay nothing
  • No verified max win figure

It suits players who like a plain ways game where the bonus does the work. If you like the theme but want different maths, compare the alternatives below.

Raging Rhino myths

  • "Lots of wilds without a win means a bonus is near." Spins are independent; the wild count says nothing about the next spin.
  • "Older slots pay better because they're 'paid off'." A game's return is fixed by its maths, not its age. See are new slots better than old ones.
  • "Six diamonds are due after a long gap." No outcome is ever due.
  • "Some casinos have a loose Raging Rhino." The only difference between sites is the RTP version. Read about loose and tight slot machines.

UK rules, demo play and checking the Raging Rhino RTP

Online, the British version follows rules in force since 31 October 2021: no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, at least 2.5 seconds per spin and no celebrating wins that are equal to or smaller than the stake. Stake limits of £5 (25 and over, since 9 April 2025) and £2 (18–24, since 21 May 2025) apply; the Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) explains them. Our UK slot machine rules guide brings everything together.

  1. Pass age verification at a UK-licensed casino; this has applied to demos since May 2019.
  2. Open Raging Rhino and tap the information icon.
  3. Check the RTP figure against 95.91%.
  4. Read the free spins page to confirm the scatter awards and multiplier rules.
  5. Look for a maximum win statement in the rules.

Demos are free demo play after age verification and use the same maths as the real game. See our guide to finding a slot's RTP.

Where to play the Raging Rhino slot in the UK

Light & Wonder games are carried by many UK-licensed casinos, but we cannot confirm a particular partner has Raging Rhino; search the lobby, because game availability changes. Frequently asked questions

What is the Raging Rhino RTP?

The Raging Rhino RTP is 95.91%, so the house edge is 4.09%. Over millions of spins the game is designed to return £95.91 for every £100 staked, which works out at an average cost of £4.09 per 100 spins at £1. Individual sessions vary widely because the game is high volatility. One slot database also lists a different figure in places, so check the rules screen in your casino's version. Our page on what a good RTP is puts the figure in context.

What is the Raging Rhino max win?

We have not found a verified Raging Rhino max win figure, and published numbers conflict, so we do not quote one. The game's help screen is the place to check for any maximum stated by the developer. Every prize is a multiple of the stake, so a 100x win would be £40 at 40p or £200 at the £2 limit for 18–24s. The largest results come from long free spins rounds with multiplier wilds. Our guide to max win caps explains how ceilings work.

How many free spins can you get on Raging Rhino?

You get 8 free spins for three diamond scatters, 15 for four, 20 for five and 50 for six. During the round, two diamonds add 5 more spins, and three or more add spins on the same scale as the original trigger. Wilds that form part of a win in free spins become 2x or 3x multipliers. Triggers are random and cannot be timed or forced. The free spins retrigger feature page explains how extra spins are added.

How do the wild multipliers work in Raging Rhino?

During free spins, any wild that forms part of a winning combination becomes a 2x or 3x multiplier, applied to that win. A £2 win with a single 3x wild pays £6. When more than one multiplier wild is involved in the same win, the help screen explains how they combine. Wilds only appear on reels 2 to 5, so every win still needs a real symbol on reel 1. Our wild multipliers page compares how different games handle combined multipliers.

Is Raging Rhino high volatility?

Yes, Raging Rhino is rated high volatility. Base-game wins are often small, and much of the return depends on free spins with multiplier wilds, which arrive unpredictably. A round that retriggers several times can pay far more than one that ends after eight spins. Budget for long spells without a bonus, and set a limit you can afford to lose. Our volatility explainer and high volatility slots page explain what this means in practice.

Who makes the Raging Rhino slot machine?

Raging Rhino was released in 2015 under the WMS brand, which is now part of Light & Wonder. Williams Manufacturing Company was founded in Chicago in 1943, created WMS Gaming in 1991 and had its first hit casino slot with Reel 'Em In in 1996. WMS merged into Scientific Games in October 2013, and that group renamed itself Light & Wonder in 2022. Read more on our Williams / WMS maker page and the Light & Wonder provider page.

Can I play Raging Rhino in demo mode?

Yes, many UK-licensed casinos offer Raging Rhino as free demo play after age verification. The Gambling Commission has required operators to confirm you are 18 or over before any free-to-play game since May 2019. The demo uses the same maths model as the real game, so it shows honestly how rare the bonus can be. Any demo result is chance and predicts nothing about real-money play. Our demo slots guide explains how to find and use demos.

What does 4,096 ways mean on Raging Rhino?

4,096 ways means every combination of matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left can pay, with no fixed lines. With six reels of four symbols, there are 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 4,096 possible routes. If two rhinos land on reel 1 and three on reel 2, those form 6 separate ways, each paid. The ways count does not change the RTP, which is fixed at 95.91%. Our answer on what 243 ways means uses the same arithmetic on a smaller grid.

Is Raging Rhino on pub or casino machines in the UK?

Raging Rhino is best known as an online slot, and we cannot confirm which land-based cabinets in Britain carry it. If a game like it appears on a venue machine, that machine must fit a legal category: Category B1 in casinos allows up to £5 a spin and £10,000 prizes, B3 allows £2 and £500, and Category C in pubs allows £1 and £100. Online slots are not in these categories. Our UK slot machine categories explainer covers the full list.
