The Planet Moolah slot, full name Invaders from the Planet Moolah, is a WMS game now owned by Light & Wonder, best known for its cascading reels: winning symbols explode and new ones fall in, so one stake can pay several times. It has five reels, three rows and 25 paylines, a 96% RTP (some sources list 95%) and medium volatility.

Who made the Planet Moolah slot machine
Planet Moolah comes from WMS, the American company that grew out of Williams, the pinball and arcade maker. WMS made its first slots in 1994 and had its first casino hit with Reel 'Em In in 1996, a game the WMS Industries history (opens in a new tab) credits as the first American video slot with a second-screen bonus. WMS was bought by Scientific Games in October 2013, and Scientific Games renamed itself Light & Wonder in 2022.
That background matters because Planet Moolah is a casino-floor design brought online. It is a 25-line video slot built around WMS's cascading reels mechanic, with a comic sci-fi theme in which aliens come to abduct cows. Its release year is not confirmed in the sources we use, so we leave it out.
How Planet Moolah's cascading reels work
In most five-reel games a spin is one result. In Planet Moolah a spin can be several results in a row. This is the cascading reels mechanic, sometimes called tumbling or avalanche reels.
Set your stake and press spin. The RNG decides the full sequence, including every cascade that will follow.
The game checks all 25 lines for wins.
Symbols that form a win are paid, then removed from the reels.
Symbols above drop down into the gaps and new symbols fall in from the top.
The lines are checked again; any new win pays and cascades again.
The sequence stops when a cascade produces no new win, and the total is added to your balance.
The key point is that cascades are not extra luck you earn by watching. The whole chain is part of one random result fixed before the reels move, which is how all online slot software works.
A worked cascade (illustrative values)
On a 50p spin (2p a line), suppose the first result pays 10× the line bet on one line, 20p. Those symbols explode, new ones fall and form a 25× win, 50p. A third cascade pays nothing. The spin returns 70p in total for 50p staked. Then a spin that pays 20p and stops costs you 30p, even though the screen showed a win. UK rules stop games celebrating returns like that as if they were wins.
Planet Moolah symbols and paytable structure
The reels mix cow and alien characters with lower-paying symbols. The paytable in the game lists what each pays for three, four or five on a line at your stake, which wild substitutes for what, and which symbol triggers the bonus. Because WMS supplied the game in several markets and settings, we do not reprint values that could differ from your version.

Planet Moolah free spins bonus
Planet Moolah has a free spins bonus triggered by bonus symbols, and cascading reels keep working during the round, so each free spin can also chain several wins. The help screen states how many bonus symbols are needed, how many spins are awarded and whether more can be won during the round. Reference sources disagree on details, so check those figures in the version you play rather than relying on a review.
Cascades help bonus symbols too: a symbol that falls in during a cascade counts just as one that landed on the first drop. That makes the round feel more reachable, but the trigger chance is already built into the game's RTP and does not rise because you have played a long time.
Planet Moolah RTP: 96% or 95%?
The Planet Moolah RTP is listed at 96%, with some sources giving 95%. One point sounds small, but it changes the average cost by a quarter: £4 per £100 staked at 96%, £5 at 95%.
Planet Moolah is rated medium volatility. Cascades produce frequent small returns, and the bonus round adds the occasional larger one. That suits budgets of roughly 100 to 200 spins.
No verified Planet Moolah max win figure is available, so we do not state one. Stake size is the firmer number: the online slot stake limits cap a spin at £5 from age 25 and at £2 between 18 and 24.

Planet Moolah in casinos and online
WMS built its business on casino cabinets, and Planet Moolah's style reflects that. In Great Britain, land-based machines are grouped into gaming machine categories with their own stake and prize limits: Category B1 machines in casinos allow up to £5 a stake and a £10,000 prize (£20,000 when linked). Whether a particular cabinet title is on a UK floor depends on the venue, so we do not claim it is. Online versions are not in those categories; they follow the online stake limits instead.
Before machines are released, test houses approved by the Gambling Commission check their randomness and payout behaviour. The Commission publishes its list of approved test houses (opens in a new tab), and our page on how machines are tested explains the process.
UK online rules for Planet Moolah
No autoplay since 31 October 2021; every spin is started by hand.
At least 2.5 seconds per spin and no turbo; see the spin speed rule.
Cascade totals that don't beat your stake are shown without win effects.
Net position and session time on screen.
The bonus is earned, never bought: GB versions carry no purchase option.
Maximum stake £5 per spin (25+), £2 (18–24).
Planet Moolah demo
A Planet Moolah demo lets you watch the cascades and learn the bonus trigger before staking money. Expect an age check first at a British-licensed site; the demo's credits are for practice and never become cash, and a few minutes of play reveals nothing about long-run returns. See are free slot games the same as real ones.
Slots like Planet Moolah
Cascades have become common. For another studio's take, Gonzo's Quest uses avalanche reels with rising multipliers, and Reactoonz 2 applies cascades to a cluster grid. For another Light & Wonder title, 88 Fortunes comes from the Bally side of the group, and Rainbow Riches from Barcrest.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Planet Moolah?
Planet Moolah's RTP is listed at 96%, though some sources give 95%. At 96 percent the long-run average cost is £4 per £100 staked; at 95 percent it is £5. Casinos may run different settings, so open the rules screen in the game and check the figure for the version you are playing. RTP is an average across millions of spins, and any single session can end well above or below it. Our RTP explainer shows how the figure is calculated.
What is the full name of Planet Moolah?
The full name is Invaders from the Planet Moolah, though most casinos and players shorten it to Planet Moolah. It was made by WMS, the American slot maker that grew from Williams, and is now part of Light & Wonder after Scientific Games bought WMS in 2013 and renamed itself in 2022. The game's theme is a comic alien invasion in which spaceships come for cows. Our page on Williams and WMS covers the company's history.
How do cascading reels work on Planet Moolah?
On Planet Moolah, symbols that form a winning line are paid and then removed, and the symbols above fall into the gaps while new ones drop in from the top. If the new arrangement forms another win, it pays and cascades again, and the chain ends when no new win appears. All of this belongs to one spin and one stake, and the whole sequence is decided by the RNG when you press spin. Read our cascading reels page for how other games use the idea.
Does Planet Moolah have free spins?
Yes, Planet Moolah has a free spins bonus triggered by bonus symbols, and its cascading reels stay active during the round so each free spin can chain several wins. The number of bonus symbols needed, the spins awarded and the retrigger rules are shown in the game's help screen; reference sources disagree on some details, so the help screen is the one to trust. The bonus is already part of the game's RTP. See what triggers a bonus round for the general picture.
What is the Planet Moolah max win?
No verified max win figure is published for Planet Moolah, so we do not quote one. The largest results come from long cascade chains, especially during the free spins bonus. Online stakes in Britain stop at £5 a spin (25 and over) and £2 (18 to 24), so every prize is scaled from a bet no bigger than that. Check the paytable for the top line values at your stake. The max win caps page explains how ceilings are set.
Is Planet Moolah high volatility?
No, Planet Moolah is rated medium volatility. Cascades produce frequent smaller returns and the free spins bonus supplies occasional bigger ones, so the balance tends to move less sharply than on a high-volatility game. Many cascade returns are still smaller than the stake, though, so your balance can drift down over a session. A budget allowing 100 to 200 spins fits this profile. For games with the same middle-of-the-road profile, browse medium volatility slot machines.
Who owns Planet Moolah now?
Light & Wonder owns Planet Moolah. The game was made by WMS, which Scientific Games acquired in October 2013; Scientific Games renamed itself Light & Wonder in 2022. The group, headquartered in Las Vegas and listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, also owns Barcrest (maker of Rainbow Riches), Bally and Shuffle Master. You will often see the game listed under WMS or Light & Wonder in casino lobbies. Our Light & Wonder page covers the company and its brands.
Can I play Planet Moolah for free?
Yes. A number of UK-licensed casinos run the Planet Moolah demo, and since May 2019 they have had to check you are over 18 before letting you in. Anything the demo pays stays as play money. A demo is a good way to see the cascades and the bonus screens, but a short session tells you nothing reliable about real-money returns. Our demo slots guide explains the rules and the limits of demo play.
Is Planet Moolah available in UK casinos as a machine?
We cannot confirm that any particular UK venue has a Planet Moolah cabinet, so check with the casino. Land-based machines in Great Britain are grouped into categories with their own limits; Category B1 machines, found only in casinos, allow up to £5 a stake and a £10,000 maximum prize, or £20,000 when linked. Online versions are not in these categories and follow the online stake limits instead. Our casino slot machines page explains what you can expect to find in a UK casino.
Can I stop the reels early on Planet Moolah?
No, you cannot stop the reels early on the UK online version, and doing so would not change anything anyway. UK rules introduced on 31 October 2021 removed slam-stop and turbo from online slots and set a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin. The result of each spin, including every cascade, is fixed by the RNG before the reels start moving, so speed and timing have no effect on what you win. Our page on whether you can stop a slot spin early explains more.
