The 88 Fortunes slot is a high-volatility, 243-ways game from Light & Wonder's Bally brand with a 96% RTP, in which your stake decides how many gold symbols are active and therefore which of four Fu Bat jackpots you can reach. This page explains that link between stake and jackpots, the free games, the costs in pounds and the UK rules that shape it.
5 reels, 3 rows, 243 ways; 96% RTP and high volatility per the developer's figures.
Higher stakes switch on more gold symbols, which widens the jackpots you are eligible for.
At 96% RTP, 100 spins at 20p cost about 80p on long-run average; real sessions swing far more.
No autoplay, a 2.5-second minimum spin and stake caps of £5 (25+) and £2 (18–24) apply in the UK.

How the 88 Fortunes slot machine works
88 Fortunes is a five-reel, three-row video slot that pays on 243 ways rather than fixed paylines. A win needs matching symbols on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel, in any row, so three matching symbols on reels one, two and three pay whether they sit high, low or in the middle. That structure is explained in full on our page about 243 ways to win slot machines.
The game comes from Bally, a brand that is now part of Light & Wonder (formerly Scientific Games; its corporate history is summarised here (opens in a new tab)). The title began on Bally's casino-floor cabinets and was later converted for online play, which is why its look and its stake-linked jackpot design feel more like a land-based machine than a typical online release.
Every spin follows the same sequence. The order matters, because it explains why nothing you do between pressing the button and the reels stopping changes the result.
Choose your total stake. In 88 Fortunes the stake also sets how many gold symbols are switched on (see below).
Press spin. The casino's server asks the random number generator for a result, which fixes the stop position of each reel at that moment.
The reels animate for at least 2.5 seconds, the UK minimum game cycle for online slots.
The game checks all 243 ways for left-to-right matches, applies any wild substitutions and pays the total.
If a Fu Bat symbol appears, the jackpot feature can start; if enough bonus symbols land, the free games start.
Gold symbols: how your stake changes the 88 Fortunes jackpots
This is the part of 88 Fortunes that catches people out. Instead of every stake having the same jackpot chances, the game uses a row of gold symbols above the reels. Each step up in stake lights another gold symbol, and each lit symbol makes another jackpot tier available in the Fu Bat feature. At the lowest stakes only the smallest prizes are in reach; at the top of the range all four tiers are.
In practice this means two players spinning side by side can be playing quite different games. Someone on the minimum bet is playing mainly for line wins and the smaller jackpots, while someone on a higher bet has the same reels plus access to the Major and Grand. The developer's in-game table lists the exact stake bands; they vary with the coin settings each casino uses, so read them on the screen rather than relying on a summary.

A bigger stake does not make the reels pay more often. It changes which prizes the jackpot feature can award and raises the cost of every spin. Our page on whether you should bet max works through that trade-off.
The Fu Bat jackpot feature explained
The Fu Bat is the game's trigger for its jackpot round. When it lands, the game can switch to a pick screen full of gold coins. You reveal coins one at a time until three matching jackpot icons appear, and that jackpot is paid. Because the coins are revealed until a match is found, the feature always ends with a prize once it starts.
The picking looks like a choice, but it isn't skill. As with any pick-me bonus, the result is fixed by the random number generator when the feature begins; the coins you touch only reveal it. Picking left first or right first makes no difference to the average outcome.
Whether the four tiers are fixed amounts or growing progressive jackpots depends on how the casino has set up its version. The jackpot values shown above the reels are the ones that apply, and they can differ between sites.
Why the jackpots change the volatility
A slot that holds back part of its return for rare jackpot hits has less left over for everyday wins. That is one reason 88 Fortunes is rated high volatility: a lot of its 96% sits in the bonus features and the upper jackpot tiers, so long runs of small or no wins between features are normal. How jackpots are funded explains this in more depth.
88 Fortunes free spins and bonus games
The free games round in 88 Fortunes is started by gold bonus symbols landing across the reels. The help screen sets out how many symbols are needed, how many games are awarded and whether the round can be retriggered, so check it in the version you open. During the free games the 243-ways structure stays the same; whether the Fu Bat can also appear is listed in the rules.
Two things are worth separating here. The free games inside the slot are a free spins feature paid for by your earlier stakes: they are part of the game's RTP. Casino free spins from a promotion are a different thing, with their own spin value, game list and expiry, and they count only if you meet the offer terms.
There is no fixed number of spins after which the bonus is due. Each spin has the same chance of triggering it as the one before, which is covered on our page about how many spins until a bonus.
88 Fortunes paytable structure and symbols
The symbol set mixes traditional Chinese good-fortune icons with playing-card values. The higher-paying symbols are the themed pictures; the card ranks fill the reels and pay the small, frequent wins. The wild symbol substitutes for the regular symbols to complete ways, but, as the paytable notes, not for the special feature symbols.
Because the paytable is shown as cash amounts for your current stake, it changes every time you change the bet. A fair way to compare symbols is to set the stake you actually plan to use and read the values for three, four and five of a kind. Our guide to reading a paytable shows how.

88 Fortunes RTP and volatility in plain numbers
The developer lists 88 Fortunes at 96% RTP. RTP is a long-run average over millions of spins, not a promise for a session. At 96%, the game is built to keep 4% of everything staked across all players over time. If you staked £100 over a session, the average cost would be £4, but a real session might end at £0, £60 or £400 depending on whether a feature lands.
High volatility means that spread around the average is wide. You will see more spins with no win or a small part-return and fewer, larger hits. If you want to understand that spread statistically, our page on standard deviation explains it without heavy maths.

88 Fortunes max win and UK stake limits
Light & Wonder doesn't publish a single max-win multiplier for 88 Fortunes in the sources we hold, and the top prize depends on the Grand jackpot value set by the casino and on your stake band. Rather than quote a figure we can't verify, we suggest reading the jackpot values above the reels and the max win cap rules in the casino's terms.
UK stake limits also shape what you can reach. Since 9 April 2025 players aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 a spin on online slots, and since 21 May 2025 players aged 18 to 24 are capped at £2, as set out in the Gambling Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). If the game's top gold-symbol band needs a stake above your limit, the casino must stop you selecting it.

What the UK version of 88 Fortunes leaves out
If you have seen 88 Fortunes in a video filmed abroad, the UK version can look different. Since 31 October 2021 online slots offered in Great Britain must not have autoplay, must take at least 2.5 seconds per spin, cannot offer turbo or slam-stop, and must not celebrate a return that is equal to or less than the stake. The background is in the Commission's online games design consultation response (opens in a new tab).
No feature buy: slots supplied to Great Britain don't offer it, as our page on bonus buy in the UK explains.
Can you play the 88 Fortunes demo?
Free demo play of 88 Fortunes, after age verification, is how UK sites must offer it: since May 2019 licensed operators can't let anyone play free-to-play versions until their age has been checked. A demo uses the same maths as the paid game, so it's a useful way to see how the gold symbols light up and how often features appear, without spending money. Our demo slots guide covers what demos can and can't tell you.
One caution: a few hundred demo spins are far too few to judge a high-volatility game. You might hit the Grand in a demo or see no feature for 300 spins; neither tells you much about the next session.
88 Fortunes in casinos and on fruit machines
In Britain, a game like 88 Fortunes on a casino floor would sit in Category B1, the only category with a maximum stake of £5 and a top prize of £10,000 (or £20,000 on linked machines). Pubs can only host Category C and D machines, so you won't find this kind of game in a pub. Our guide to casino slot machines explains which machines British casinos can offer.
Online, the categories don't apply; the online stake limits above do instead. That is one of the bigger differences between online and land-based slots.
Is the 88 Fortunes slot worth playing?
Whether 88 Fortunes suits you depends on what you want from a session and what you can comfortably spend. It is entertainment that costs money, and the long-run average is a loss.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of 88 Fortunes?
88 Fortunes has an RTP of 96%, according to the developer's figures. That means, over millions of spins by all players, the game returns an average of 96p for every £1 staked and keeps 4p. It is not a forecast for one session: a high-volatility game like this can leave you well up or well down after a few hundred spins. Always check the help screen, because casinos can choose between versions with different settings. Our page on RTP explains the maths, and how to find a slot's RTP shows where to look.
How do the 88 Fortunes jackpots work?
The jackpots are paid through the Fu Bat feature, a pick screen in which you reveal gold coins until three matching jackpot icons appear. Which tiers you can win depends on how many gold symbols your stake has lit: low stakes open only the smaller prizes, while the top stake band opens all four, from Mini to Grand. The feature is triggered at random when the Fu Bat lands, and the result is set before you pick. See pick-me bonus and jackpot slot machines for the wider picture.
Do I have to bet the maximum to win the Grand in 88 Fortunes?
You need a stake high enough to light every gold symbol, which in practice is the top stake band in the game's settings. Lower stakes still play the same reels but can't win the higher tiers. That design encourages bigger bets, so decide your stake from your budget first, not from the jackpot. In the UK the most you can stake on an online slot is £5 a spin at 25 and over, or £2 if you are 18 to 24. Our pages on should you bet max and stake limits explain more.
How do you trigger 88 Fortunes free spins?
The free games start when enough gold bonus symbols land across the reels in one spin. The help screen states the number of symbols needed and how many free games are awarded in the version you are playing. During the free games the reels still pay on 243 ways, and the rules list any extras that apply. The trigger is random on every spin, so there's no way to predict or force it. Read how free spins work on slot machines and what triggers a bonus round.
What is the max win on 88 Fortunes?
We don't quote a max-win multiplier for 88 Fortunes because the developer's figure isn't in the sources we can verify, and the top prize depends on the Grand jackpot value the casino sets. The jackpot amounts shown above the reels are the figures that apply where you play. Casinos may also cap single payouts in their terms. Your stake matters too: you can only win the Grand at the top gold-symbol band, and UK stake caps of £5 (25+) and £2 (18–24) apply. See max win caps for more.
Is 88 Fortunes high or low volatility?
88 Fortunes is rated high volatility. Wins are spread unevenly: many spins return nothing or a small part of the stake, and a bigger share of the return comes through the free games and the jackpot feature. That makes session results swing widely around the 96% average. If you prefer steadier play, a medium or low-volatility game will usually stretch a budget further in terms of time, though the long-run cost is similar. Our volatility page and the list of high volatility slot machines explain the trade-off.
Can I play 88 Fortunes for free?
You can try a free demo of 88 Fortunes at UK-licensed sites, but only after age verification, a rule in force since May 2019. The demo uses the same reels and maths as the real-money game, so it is good for learning how the gold symbols and the Fu Bat feature look. Remember that demo results don't carry over and a short demo is no guide to what will happen with real money. Our demo slots guide and the page on whether free slot games are the same as real ones explain the details.
Who makes the 88 Fortunes slot?
88 Fortunes was made by Bally, a brand now owned by Light & Wonder, the company formerly called Scientific Games. Bally built it first for casino-floor cabinets, and the online version followed, listed as a 2016 release. That history explains the land-based style of its stake-linked jackpot system. Light & Wonder also owns the Barcrest and WMS brands, which made many games familiar to UK players. Read more on our Light & Wonder and Bally pages.
How much does it cost to play 88 Fortunes for an hour?
It depends on stake and speed, but you can estimate it. At the UK minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin, an hour could hold up to 1,440 spins, though most people play fewer. At 600 spins an hour and 20p a spin you would stake £120, and at 96% RTP the long-run average cost is about £4.80. Actual results vary widely either way because of the high volatility. Use our slot cost calculator and the page on how much a slot costs per hour to work out your own figures.
Is 88 Fortunes rigged?
No. Online slots licensed in Great Britain must use a tested random number generator, and the published RTP has to match how the game actually performs over time. The Gambling Commission's technical standards require random outcomes and independent testing. What can feel unfair is the high volatility and the stake-linked jackpots, which mean long losing runs are normal and the top prizes need higher stakes. That's design, not cheating. Our pages on are slot machines rigged and RNG certification go into the checks.
