The Avalon slot is a 2006 Arthurian-legend video slot first released by Microgaming and now part of the Games Global catalogue. It runs on 5 reels and 3 rows with 20 paylines, returns 96.01% over the long run and is rated medium volatility, which makes it one of the gentler games on the site.
5 reels, 3 rows and 20 paylines: a win needs matching symbols from the leftmost reel along a line.
RTP is 96.01%: 100 spins at 20p (£20 staked) cost about 80p on average over the long run.
Medium volatility: smaller wins tend to arrive more often than on high-volatility modern slots.
Our facts hold no verified max win, so read it from the game's help screen.
UK versions have no autoplay and a 2.5-second minimum spin.

Avalon slot machine at a glance
Avalon takes its name from the island of Arthurian legend, where the sword Excalibur was forged and the Lady of the Lake lives. Microgaming launched it in 2006, two years after Thunderstruck, and it belongs to the same generation of straightforward five-reel video slot machines: fixed lines, a wild, a scatter and a free spins round.
The game now sits with Games Global, the Isle of Man company that took over Microgaming's games portfolio and distribution business in 2022. That's why you'll see both names attached to it. For other titles we cover, start at our slot games hub.

How the Avalon slot works on 20 paylines
A payline is a fixed path across the reels, one position per reel. Avalon checks 20 of them every spin. A line pays when the same symbol appears on consecutive reels from the left, starting on reel 1. Only the highest win on each line is paid, and wins on different lines are added together.
Set your total stake. The game divides it across the 20 lines, so a 20p total is a 1p line bet.
Press spin. The random number generator chooses where each reel stops.
The game reads all 20 lines and pays any that start with a matching run on reel 1.
Scatter symbols are counted separately, wherever they land.
Wins are added to your balance; three or more scatters start the bonus.
Worked example: line bet and total bet
At a 40p total bet, each line carries 2p. If a symbol's paytable value for three of a kind is 10 times the line bet, a three-symbol win on one line pays 20p, and two such lines pay 40p, which is exactly your stake back. Under UK rules, a result like that must not be celebrated as a win. The paytable values here are illustrative; open the game's paytable for the real ones at your stake.
Avalon symbols and paytable
The reels mix playing-card royals (the low-pay symbols) with Arthurian picture symbols, which fill the higher tiers. The Lady of the Lake acts as the wild, standing in for regular symbols to complete lines. A treasure chest is the scatter that pays anywhere on the reels and starts the bonus.
The help screen sets out exactly which symbols the wild can replace, whether it multiplies wins it helps form, and what each symbol pays for three, four and five of a kind. Because the game has been reissued and tuned since 2006, read the version in front of you rather than trusting an old description.
Avalon free spins and bonus round
Landing three or more treasure-chest scatters starts the free spins round. During it, wins are boosted by a multiplier, which is where the game's largest results usually come from. The help screen states the number of spins, the multiplier and whether the round can be retriggered.
With medium volatility, the bonus carries a meaningful share of the return but the base game also pays its way more often than on modern high-volatility titles. That balance is the main reason older games like Avalon still appeal to players who want a steadier session. How often the round triggers isn't published in any source we hold, so we don't estimate it; what triggers a bonus round? explains why trigger odds are rarely disclosed.
Avalon RTP and medium volatility explained
At 96.01% RTP, the long-run average cost is just under 4p in every pound staked. That figure is an average across millions of spins, not a promise for a session. Medium volatility means results bunch less dramatically than on a high-volatility game, but you can still lose your whole budget. Our page on medium-volatility slot machines explains the trade-off, and RTP explained covers how the figure is calculated.
We don't hold a verified maximum win for Avalon, so we don't quote one. Open the help screen, where the top prize is stated either as a multiple of the stake or in pounds at your current stake. To translate any multiple into money, multiply it by your total stake. The table shows how two example multiples convert at stakes allowed in Great Britain.

Advantages
Easy to follow: 20 fixed lines, one wild, one scatter.
Medium volatility suits longer, steadier sessions at low stakes.
RTP of 96.01% sits in the usual range for online slots.
Drawbacks
No headline-grabbing ceiling compared with modern high-volatility games.
Graphics and sound date from the mid-2000s.
Bonus details vary by version, so you need to read the help screen.
Newer isn't automatically better. Modern games often trade more frequent small wins for a bigger ceiling, and our answer to are new slots better than old ones? explains why. Avalon suits adults who want a simple, lower-drama game and are happy with a modest prize range.
Slots like Avalon
Thunderstruck: Microgaming's 2004 Norse game on 5×3 with 9 lines and medium volatility, the closest relative in age and style.
Rise of Merlin: Play'n GO's Arthurian-themed 5×3 game with 10 lines, but high volatility.
Immortal Romance: a later Games Global classic using 243 ways rather than lines.
Microgaming also produced a sequel, Avalon II, which reworked the theme with a more elaborate bonus; it is a separate game with its own maths, so don't assume its figures apply here.
Avalon myths: what an old slot does and doesn't do
'Older slots pay more because casinos forgot to change them.' RTP settings are chosen by the operator and tested; age doesn't loosen a game.
'Playing all lines raises the RTP.' Lines are fixed at 20, and the RTP is a property of the whole game.
'The Lady of the Lake appears more after a losing streak.' Each spin is independent; see the gambler's fallacy on slots.
'You can time the spin button.' The result is set when you press spin, and pressing again can't stop the reels early online.
Finding the Avalon RTP and rules in the help screen
Load the game and open the menu (often three lines or a question mark).
Choose 'Paytable' to see symbol values at your current stake.
Choose 'Game rules' or 'Help' to find the RTP, the free spins rules and the maximum win.
If the RTP shown is below 96.01%, the casino runs a lower setting; compare elsewhere if that matters to you.
Avalon predates the Gambling Commission's 2021 design rules, so UK versions were updated. Since 31 October 2021 the responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab) has required no autoplay, no turbo or quick-spin, a game cycle of at least 2.5 seconds, a clear net position on screen, and no celebration of returns equal to or below the stake. Our spin speed rule page explains how the 2.5 seconds is measured.
Demo play is available only after age verification, in line with rules from May 2019, and credit cards can't be used to fund play. See UK slot machine rules for the full list.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Avalon slot RTP?
Avalon's RTP is 96.01%. Over a very large number of spins, that means £96.01 is returned for every £100 staked and £3.99 is kept as the house edge. Short sessions vary widely around that figure. A casino can run a lower setting, so open the game rules and check the number before you play. Our guide to reading RTP in the UK explains where to look and what the figure does and doesn't tell you.
Who made the Avalon slot?
Microgaming made Avalon and released it in 2006. In 2022 Games Global took over Microgaming's games portfolio and distribution business, so the game is now listed under Games Global at most casinos. The studio's catalogue also includes Thunderstruck, Immortal Romance and Mega Moolah. Read more on our Games Global provider page or browse other studios through the providers hub.
How many paylines does Avalon have?
Avalon has 20 fixed paylines on 5 reels and 3 rows. All 20 are active on every spin, so you can't reduce the number to lower the cost; your total stake is shared across them. A line pays when matching symbols run from the leftmost reel. Wins on separate lines are added together. If you're comparing line games with ways games, our page on ways to win slot machines explains the difference in plain terms.
Does the Avalon slot have free spins?
Yes, Avalon has a free spins bonus started by three or more treasure-chest scatter symbols landing anywhere on the reels. Wins during the round are boosted by a multiplier, and the help screen lists the number of spins and the multiplier for the version you're playing. Free spins in the game are a feature, not a casino offer, and they can't be bought in the UK version. Our explainer on how free spins work on slot machines goes deeper.
What is the Avalon max win?
We don't quote a maximum win for Avalon because none is verified in our facts. The figure is shown in the game rules, either as a multiple of your stake or in pounds. To convert a multiple, multiply it by your total stake: a 1,000x prize at 50p, for instance, would be £500. Bear in mind that top prizes are very rare outcomes. The explainer on max win caps explains how ceilings work.
Is Avalon a good slot for beginners?
Avalon is a reasonable first game because its rules are simple and its volatility is medium. There are 20 fixed lines, a wild, a scatter and one bonus round, so there is little to learn before you understand the paytable. That doesn't make it cheap: at 20p a spin, 100 spins stake £20 and cost about 80p on average, with real sessions varying a lot. Our slots for beginners guide covers budgets and help-screen basics.
Can I play an Avalon demo?
Yes, many UK-licensed casinos offer free demo play of Avalon, after age verification. Since May 2019, demo games in Great Britain have been for verified adults only, and they must behave like the real-money version. A demo is a good way to read the paytable and see the bonus, but a short run won't predict real results. See our guide to demo slots for what demos can and can't show you.
Is Avalon the same as Avalon II?
No, Avalon II is a separate sequel with its own design, features and maths model. It keeps the Arthurian theme but builds a more elaborate bonus structure. The figures on this page (96.01% RTP, 20 lines, medium volatility) apply to the original only. Always open the help screen of the game you're actually playing. Our slot sequels guide explains how studios usually change a game from one instalment to the next.
Is the Avalon slot fair?
Yes, at a UK-licensed casino Avalon must use a tested random number generator and pay back in line with its stated RTP over the long run. The Gambling Commission requires independent testing by approved test houses. Fair doesn't mean you'll come out ahead; the 3.99% house edge applies to every spin. How slot machines are tested explains what checks are made and by whom.
What stake can I use on Avalon in the UK?
In Great Britain you can stake up to £5 a spin on Avalon if you're 25 or over, or up to £2 if you're aged 18 to 24. These caps apply to all online slots and came in on 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025 respectively. The game's own minimum is set by the casino and shown in the stake menu. Our page on online slot stake limits explains how operators check age.
