Big Bass Bonanza Megaways slot

The Big Bass Bonanza Megaways slot puts the fishing series’ cash-collecting fisherman on a six-reel Megaways engine with up to 46,656 ways to win. Released in 2021 under Pragmatic Play, it has a 96.7% top RTP, very high volatility and a 4,000× stake max win, so it swings harder than the original Big Bass Bonanza.

Key takeaways

  • Six reels change height every spin, giving up to 46,656 ways; winning symbols tumble away for follow-up wins.
  • Free spins come from three to five scatters (10, 15 or 20 spins); the fisherman wild collects fish cash values.
  • Every fourth fisherman collected adds 10 spins and raises the collection multiplier to 2×, 3× and then 10×.
  • Max win is 4,000× stake: £400 at 10p, £8,000 at the £2 limit for 18–24s and £20,000 at £5.

How the Big Bass Bonanza Megaways slot machine counts its ways

Instead of fixed paylines, the game uses the Megaways mechanic: each of the six reels shows a different number of symbols on every spin, and the number of ways to win is those six numbers multiplied together. A win needs matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, in any row.

How reel heights become ways to win (examples)
Symbols on reels 1–6SumWays to win
2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 22×2×2×2×2×264
3, 4, 5, 3, 6, 23×4×5×3×6×22,160
4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 44×4×4×4×4×44,096
6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 66×6×6×6×6×646,656 (the maximum)

More ways doesn’t mean more value per spin. Your stake is the same whatever the reel heights, and the game’s maths already accounts for every possible combination. A spin with 46,656 ways can still pay nothing; a 64-way spin can hit a good line. The history of Megaways explains how Big Time Gaming’s licensed engine spread across studios.

What happens on one spin

Each paid spin follows the same order. The result of the first drop is fixed by the random number generator before anything moves on screen, and each refill is drawn the same way.

  1. You choose a stake (up to £5, or £2 if you are 18 to 24).
  2. The RNG sets the height of each reel and the symbols that fill it.
  3. The game counts the ways and pays any left-to-right matches.
  4. Winning symbols are removed by the tumble and the gaps refill from above.
  5. Any new wins pay and tumble again, until a drop produces nothing.
  6. Scatters in view at the end are counted; three or more start the free spins.

The tumble is why a single stake can produce a chain of small wins. It doesn’t add value beyond what the RTP already includes; it simply spreads the payout over several drops.

Fish money symbols and the fisherman wild

Every fish that lands carries a cash value printed on it. In the base game a fish is mainly a line-paying symbol, and slot databases describe its line pay as small. The cash values matter in the bonus, where the fisherman wild appears and collects the value of every fish in view at the same time. That collect mechanic, borrowed from the cash collect family, is the signature of the whole Big Bass series, which Reel Kingdom makes with Pragmatic Play as distribution partner.

A worked example at a £1 stake: the bonus screen shows fish worth £2, £5 and £10 and one fisherman lands. He collects £17. If two fishermen land on the same drop, each collects the full set, so £34. Once you have reached the first multiplier level (2×), the same single collection pays £34, and two fishermen pay £68. These numbers are illustrative; actual fish values are drawn at random from the game’s list.

Big Bass Bonanza Megaways free spins and the retrigger ladder

Three or more scatter symbols anywhere in view trigger the free spins. The number of spins depends on how many scatters started the round.

Big Bass Bonanza Megaways free spins awarded
ScattersFree spinsStarting collection multiplier
3101×
4151×
5201×

During the round every fisherman collected is added to a meter. Each fourth fisherman awards 10 more spins and lifts the multiplier applied to his collections. The ladder has three steps:

  • 4 fishermen: +10 spins, collections multiplied by 2×.
  • 8 fishermen: +10 spins, collections multiplied by 3×.
  • 12 fishermen: +10 spins, collections multiplied by 10×.

So the most spins one round can run is the starting allocation plus three blocks of 10. Reaching the 10× level late in the round leaves few spins for it to work, which is one reason results vary so much between bonuses. Read about increasing multipliers in free spins for the general pattern.

Dynamite and bazooka modifiers in the bonus

Slot databases describe two random modifiers that can fire during free spins when a fisherman lands but there are no fish to collect. Dynamite adds fish to random positions so the fisherman has something to collect, and a bazooka clears the grid except for the fisherman wild before new symbols fall. They soften the worst outcome of the bonus, a fisherman landing alone, without changing the long-run RTP, which already includes them. The rules screen at your casino lists exactly when each can trigger.

Big Bass Bonanza Megaways RTP and volatility in pounds

The top published Big Bass Bonanza Megaways RTP is 96.7%, a house edge of 3.3%. Lower-RTP versions are also supplied to operators, so the figure at your casino may differ; check the game rules. Volatility is rated very high, the top band on most scales.

Big Bass Bonanza Megaways cost per 100 spins at 96.7% RTP
StakeStaked over 100 spinsLong-run average cost
10p£1033p
20p£2066p
£1£100£3.30
£2£200£6.60
£5£500£16.50

Very high volatility means the averages above will almost never be what you see. A bonus that hits the 10× level can pay many times the session’s stake; a bonus where the fisherman finds few fish can pay less than the stake. Plan sessions around the amount you are prepared to lose, not the average. Our bankroll guide shows how spin count and stake trade off.

Big Bass Bonanza Megaways max win at UK stake levels

The game’s max win is 4,000× your stake. Once a round reaches that figure it ends and pays the capped amount. That is almost double the 2,100× cap on the original Big Bass Bonanza, which fits its higher volatility.

Big Bass Bonanza Megaways max win by stake
Stake per spinMax win (4,000×)
10p£400
£1£4,000
£2 (limit for 18–24s)£8,000
£5 (limit for 25+)£20,000

The cap is a ceiling, not a target. It needs the top multiplier, plenty of fish and several fishermen arriving together; most bonuses finish nowhere near it.

Megaways vs the original Big Bass Bonanza

The original Big Bass Bonanza runs on a fixed 5×3 grid with 10 paylines. The Megaways edition keeps the fish, the fisherman and the 2×/3×/10× ladder but changes everything around them: variable reel heights, tumbles, more ways and very high volatility. If you want the same theme at a gentler pace, the original is the closer fit; Bigger Bass Bonanza and Big Bass Hold & Spinner Megaways are other branches of the family. Our comparison of Big Bass Bonanza and Fishin’ Frenzy shows how the fishing genre’s two biggest names differ.

UK rules on the Big Bass Bonanza Megaways slot

Versions offered in Great Britain follow the Gambling Commission’s product design standard (opens in a new tab), in force since 31 October 2021: no autoplay, no turbo or quick-spin, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no celebration of returns at or below the stake and a visible net position. Tumble sequences still play out, but each new paid spin must be started by you.

The ante bet and bonus buy options sometimes seen on Pragmatic Play titles elsewhere are not part of slots supplied to Great Britain, so the scatters are the only way into the bonus. Stake limits of £5 (25 and over) and £2 (18 to 24) apply per spin, as explained in the Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) and on our £2 limit for 18 to 24s page.

Big Bass Bonanza Megaways myths

  • “More ways on screen means a win is coming.” The way count is drawn at random each spin and has no memory.
  • “Fish on screen in the base game mean the bonus is close.” Base-game fish have no link to the scatter chance.
  • “The game pays more after a long losing run.” Each spin is independent; there is no catch-up. See do slot machines remember past spins.
  • “A demo that paid well means the real game will too.” Demo and real modes share maths, not luck.

Checking the RTP and rules before you play

  1. Open the game and select the menu icon.
  2. Find the game rules or information page.
  3. Read the RTP line and compare it with 96.7%.
  4. Check the free spins section for the scatter counts and multiplier ladder.
  5. Look for the max win statement (4,000× on the top version).

The Big Bass Bonanza Megaways demo is a useful way to read these rules and watch the ladder work, and it is available at UK casinos only after age verification, under rules the Gambling Commission announced in 2019 (opens in a new tab). Pragmatic Play’s own studio website (opens in a new tab) lists its games, but your casino’s help screen is the version that applies to you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Big Bass Bonanza Megaways RTP?

The top published Big Bass Bonanza Megaways RTP is 96.7%, meaning the game is designed to return about £96.70 of every £100 staked over an extremely long run of spins. Pragmatic Play also supplies lower settings, so your casino may run a version below that. The exact figure is printed in the game rules inside the help screen. Over a short session the RTP tells you very little, especially on a very high volatility game. Our page on RTP variants explains why one slot can have several returns.

What is the Big Bass Bonanza Megaways max win?

The max win is 4,000 times your stake. At a 10p stake that is £400, at £1 it is £4,000, at the £2 limit for players aged 18 to 24 it is £8,000, and at the £5 limit for over-25s it is £20,000. When the cap is reached the round ends and pays that amount. Reaching it needs the 10× collection level and a screen full of high-value fish, so it is a very rare outcome. See max win caps for why games set limits.

How many free spins do you get on Big Bass Bonanza Megaways?

You get 10 free spins for three scatters, 15 for four and 20 for five. During the round, every fourth fisherman wild you collect adds another 10 spins and raises the collection multiplier, first to 2×, then 3× and finally 10×. That ladder can extend the round three times. The number of spins doesn’t decide the result on its own; what matters is how many fish are on screen when fishermen land. Our free spins feature guide covers the general mechanics.

How is Big Bass Bonanza Megaways different from Big Bass Bonanza?

The Megaways version replaces the original’s fixed 5×3 grid and 10 paylines with six reels of changing height and up to 46,656 ways, and it adds tumbling wins. The fisherman collect feature and the 2×, 3× and 10× retrigger ladder carry over. The result is a more volatile game with a 4,000× cap. If you want the same theme with steadier play, the original is closer to that. Our Big Bass Bonanza slot page explains the first game in detail.

Can I buy the bonus on Big Bass Bonanza Megaways in the UK?

No. Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos don’t include a bonus buy or ante bet option, so the free spins can only be triggered by landing three or more scatters during normal play. Versions of the game in other countries may show a buy button, which is why reviews written for other markets sometimes mention it. The base-game maths of the UK version includes the bonus at its natural frequency. Our page on bonus buy in the UK explains the background.

Is Big Bass Bonanza Megaways a good slot for small budgets?

It can be played at small stakes, but its very high volatility makes a small budget vulnerable to long dry spells. With £10 at 10p a spin you have 100 spins, and it is entirely possible to finish them without seeing the bonus. If your budget is tight, a lower volatility game spreads the same money more evenly. Whatever you choose, set the budget before you start and stop when it is gone. The best slots for small budgets guide covers the trade-offs.

What does the fisherman do in Big Bass Bonanza Megaways?

The fisherman is the wild symbol, and in the free spins he also collects the cash value of every fish visible at the moment he lands. Two fishermen landing together each collect the full set. Each one collected also counts towards the retrigger meter, where every fourth adds 10 spins and a higher collection multiplier. In the base game he simply substitutes to help complete wins. The cash collect feature page explains how collector symbols work across different slots.

Can I play the Big Bass Bonanza Megaways demo?

Yes, many UK-licensed casinos offer a free demo of Big Bass Bonanza Megaways, but only once your age has been verified, which normally means opening an account. The demo uses the same reels and rules, so it is a good way to see the tumbles and the fisherman ladder without spending money. It can’t tell you how a real session will go, because short runs of a very volatile game vary enormously. Read our demo slots guide for more.

How many ways to win does Big Bass Bonanza Megaways have?

It has up to 46,656 ways to win, and the actual number changes on every spin. The game multiplies the number of symbols showing on each of the six reels; six symbols on all six reels gives the maximum, while two on each gives just 64. The way count doesn’t change your stake or the RTP, because both are already built into the game’s maths. Our Megaways vs 243 ways comparison shows how the two systems differ.

Is Big Bass Bonanza Megaways fair?

Yes, versions offered by UK-licensed casinos must use a tested random number generator and pay out in line with the RTP stated in their rules, and games are checked by approved test houses before release. Fair doesn’t mean favourable: the house edge of at least 3.3% means players as a group lose over time. Short-term results can go either way, which is how slots work. Our article are slot machines rigged explains how fairness is checked in Great Britain.
