Action Bank slot overview

Action Bank comes from Barcrest, a company that started out making machines for British pubs and clubs and is best known online for Rainbow Riches. The theme is a bank vault heist, but the structure is old-school: 20 fixed lines, a set of vault and money symbols, and a bonus built around picking. That makes it a useful example of how UK fruit-machine thinking carried into online video slots.

How the Action Bank slot machine works

Each spin is a single result chosen by a random number generator the moment you press the button. The reels then show that result. The game checks 20 lines, each a fixed path from reel 1 to reel 5, for three or more matching symbols in a row from the left.

  1. Pick a total stake; it is split equally across the 20 lines.
  2. Press spin. The RNG chooses where each reel stops.
  3. Line wins are counted from reel 1, with any wild substituting for regular symbols.
  4. Special symbols are checked: certain symbols can turn into Golden Vault symbols.
  5. Enough Golden Vault symbols in one spin start the bonus.

Because the stake is shared across 20 lines, a £1 spin puts 5p on each. A line win of 8× the line bet therefore pays 40p, a net loss on the spin. UK games can't celebrate a result like that, under the losses disguised as wins rule. The paytable shows the real line values at your stake; those used here are illustrations.

Golden Vault symbols and how the bonus starts

Published descriptions say special symbols on the reels can transform into Golden Vault symbols, and five Golden Vaults on the same spin lead into the feature. The animation of symbols turning gold adds suspense, but the RNG already knew how many would turn before the reels stopped. Like a scatter, it counts regardless of lines.

Published descriptions also mention a free spins option alongside the Big Bank pick, including a way to gamble for more or fewer spins. Features can differ between versions, so read the help screen in the game you load to see exactly what yours includes.

Action Bank bonus: the Big Bank pick game and its odds

Big Bank is a pick-me bonus laid out like a vault wall. Published descriptions give 15 hidden tiles: 6 sapphires, 5 rubies and 4 diamonds. You uncover tiles one at a time until three of the same gem appear, and you win the prize for that gem. The help screen confirms which gem pays what.

Working out the odds

If the 15 tiles are shuffled evenly, the chance of each gem being the first to reach three can be calculated exactly. The more common a gem, the more likely it gets there first.

Chance of each gem being matched first (15 tiles, even shuffle)
GemTilesChance of being matched first
Sapphire6about 51%
Ruby5about 32%
Diamond4about 17%

In other words, the rarest gem finishes first about one time in six. Whichever tiles you click, the odds are the same, because the order is random; there is no pattern to read on the vault wall. This is the same logic as a fruit machine's feature trail or cash pot pick: it feels like a skill choice, and it isn't one.

Action Bank RTP and volatility

The Action Bank RTP is published as 95.16%, a house edge of 4.84%. That is lower than the roughly 96% many modern online slots list, and the difference adds up. At 96%, £100 staked costs £4 on average; at 95.16%, it costs £4.84, about a fifth more. Some Barcrest games vary their RTP with the stake, so check the help screen at the stake you plan to use. Our guide to reading slot RTP in the UK shows where it is printed.

Medium volatility means a mix of regular small wins and occasional larger ones, with less extreme swings than the Nolimit City titles on this site. It still means losing sessions are common; see medium volatility slot machines for what to expect from the profile.

What Action Bank costs: 100 spins and an hour of play

Action Bank average cost at 95.16% RTP
StakePer 100 spins stakedAverage cost per 100 spinsAverage cost per hour at the 2.5-second minimum (1,440 spins)
20p£20about 97pabout £13.94
50p£50about £2.42about £34.85
£1£100about £4.84about £69.70
£2 (18–24 limit)£200about £9.68about £139.39

The hourly column assumes non-stop play at the fastest pace UK rules allow, which few people manage; real sessions are slower and cost less. Results also vary around these averages, sometimes a lot. The value of the table is in comparing stakes and games, and in setting a budget before you begin. A fixed figure decided in advance is easier to stick to than one decided mid-session.

Action Bank max win: what we can and can't confirm

We haven't been able to verify a single maximum win figure for Action Bank, so we don't quote one. The paytable lists the top line award for five of the best symbol, and the help screen describes the top prizes in the bonus; together they show the highest payouts at your stake. Since 2025, UK online stakes are limited to £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for players aged 18–24, which caps the cost side of every spin. The online slot stake limits page has the dates.

From pub fruit machine to online slot: the Barcrest connection

Barcrest grew up in the Manchester area, began with two staff in 1968 and released its first game, Invader, in 1970. It later became one of the best-known names in British pub machines and was bought by Scientific Games, now Light & Wonder, in 2011. The Arcade Museum's Barcrest profile (opens in a new tab) lists many of its land-based machines.

Action Bank itself is an online video slot, and we haven't found a land-based version to point to. But its design shows the lineage: fixed lines rather than ways, a pick-style bonus that resembles the cash pots and feature boards on pub fruit machines, and a moderate prize structure. The key difference is regulation. A pub fruit machine is Category C, with a £1 maximum stake and £100 top prize, and it may use holds and nudges. The online slot has different stake limits, a published RTP and no holds or nudges.

UK rules that apply to the Action Bank online slot

The UK version follows the Gambling Commission's design rules from 31 October 2021: no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no celebrations for returns at or below the stake, and a running net position. The UK slot game design rules page lists each one. RTP must be available in the game information, as set out in the Commission's standard on game rules and the likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab).

Action Bank myths

  • 'You can spot the diamonds on the vault wall.' The tiles are randomised; any choice has the same odds.
  • 'Golden Vault symbols that nearly convert mean the bonus is close.' Each spin is independent.
  • 'Barcrest games pay like pub machines, in cycles.' Online slots use a random number generator with no payout cycle; see why fruit machines pay out in bursts.
  • 'Medium volatility means you'll break even.' A 95.16% RTP means you lose on average.

Who Action Bank suits, and demo play

Action Bank suits adults who like simple line slots with a single, easy-to-follow bonus, and who accept a slightly higher long-run cost than many newer games. If keeping cost down matters most, a higher-RTP game is a better choice; see our slot machines hub. Free demo play is available after age verification at UK casinos, which is the simplest way to read the paytable and see the Big Bank game.

Support is free if gambling becomes a problem: Gamblers Anonymous (opens in a new tab) runs meetings across the UK, and the National Gambling Helpline is on 0808 8020 133.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Action Bank RTP?

The published Action Bank RTP is 95.16%, a house edge of 4.84%. On average over a very long run, every £100 staked returns £95.16 and costs £4.84. That is a little below the roughly 96% many modern online slots list, so the game costs about a fifth more per £100 than a 96% title. Some Barcrest games vary RTP by stake, so check the game rules at the stake you choose. Our page on what a good RTP for a slot is puts the figure in context.

What is the Action Bank max win?

We haven't been able to verify a single maximum win figure for Action Bank, so we don't publish one. The paytable shows the top line award at your stake, and the help screen lists the top prizes available in the Big Bank bonus; between them they set out the highest possible payouts. Remember that UK online stakes are capped at £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18–24. For how caps generally work, see the max win glossary entry.

How does the Big Bank bonus work?

Big Bank is a pick game. Published descriptions show 15 hidden tiles, 6 sapphires, 5 rubies and 4 diamonds, and you reveal tiles until three of one gem appear, winning that gem's prize. If the tiles are shuffled evenly, sapphires are matched first about 51% of the time, rubies about 32% and diamonds about 17%. Which tiles you click makes no difference to those odds. The help screen confirms prize values. Our pick me bonus page explains how this type of feature is built.

How do you trigger the Action Bank bonus?

You trigger the Action Bank bonus by getting five Golden Vault symbols on the same spin, according to published descriptions; certain symbols can turn into Golden Vaults during the spin. Some versions also describe a free spins option. The trigger is decided by the random number generator, and a spin where four vaults appear doesn't make the next spin any more likely to trigger. There's no bonus buy at UK-licensed casinos. The what triggers a bonus round page explains how triggers work.

Is Action Bank a fruit machine?

No. Action Bank is an online video slot made by Barcrest, a company with deep roots in British pub fruit machines. It borrows some of that style, with fixed lines and a pick-style bonus, but it has no holds or nudges, and it is regulated as an online game with online stake limits rather than as a Category C pub machine with its £1 stake and £100 prize limits. Our page on the difference between slots and fruit machines sets out the distinctions.

Is there an Action Bank demo?

Yes, free demo play of Action Bank is offered by many UK casinos after age verification, which has been required since May 2019. The demo shows the same paylines, symbols and Big Bank bonus as the paid game, with play credits instead of money. It is the best way to read the paytable and confirm the RTP. It can't show how future paid spins will go, because each result is independent and random. The demo slots guide explains how demo play works in the UK.

Who makes Action Bank?

Action Bank is made by Barcrest, now part of Light & Wonder. Barcrest started in the Manchester area in 1968 with two staff, released its first game, Invader, in 1970 and became a major supplier of British pub machines. Scientific Games bought it in 2011, and the parent company was renamed Light & Wonder in 2022. Online, Barcrest is best known for the Rainbow Riches series from 2006. See the Barcrest provider page for more on the company and its games.

Is Action Bank good for a small budget?

Action Bank's medium volatility suits small budgets better than an extreme game, because wins arrive more regularly, but its 95.16% RTP means it costs more in the long run than many alternatives. At 20p a spin, £20 buys 100 spins with an average cost of about 97p; a 96% game would average 80p. Any session can still lose the whole budget. Set the amount before you start and stop when it is used. Our page on the best slot for a small budget compares options.

Does Action Bank have autoplay in the UK?

No. Online slots in Great Britain have not been allowed to offer autoplay since 31 October 2021. The same rules removed turbo and slam-stop, set a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin and banned win celebrations for returns that don't exceed the stake. Action Bank's UK version follows them, and your net position is shown throughout. These rules change the pace, not the 95.16% RTP. The autoplay ban page explains why the Gambling Commission introduced it.
