Gonzo's Quest slot

The Gonzo's Quest slot is NetEnt’s 20-payline adventure game where symbols fall into place instead of spinning, and each consecutive win in a chain raises a multiplier. Published figures give it a 95.97% RTP, medium volatility and a 2,500x max win. Below: how the Avalanche ladder works, what Free Falls add, and what it all costs in pounds at UK stake limits.

Key takeaways

  • Winning symbols explode and new ones drop in; each win in a row lifts the multiplier from 1x to 2x, 3x and 5x.
  • Three Free Fall symbols on a payline across reels 1–3 start 10 Free Falls, where the ladder runs 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x.
  • RTP 95.97%: 100 spins at 50p (£50 staked) cost about £2.02 on long-run average.
  • The 2,500x cap equals £5,000 at the £2 limit for 18–24s and £12,500 at £5 for over-25s.
  • There is no autoplay or bonus buy on UK versions.

What makes the Gonzo's Quest slot different

NetEnt lists Gonzo's Quest beside Starburst and Mega Fortune as one of its signature games. Its hook is the Avalanche: stone blocks carved with masks drop from above rather than spinning on reels, and when a line wins, the blocks shatter and the gap is filled from above. NetEnt calls the system Avalanche; you will see the same idea elsewhere as tumbles or cascading reels.

Behind the animation, this is still a 5×3, 20-line video slot. The random number generator decides the first fall and every refill. The visual drop does not change the maths; what matters is the multiplier that rides along with each chain.

How the Gonzo's Quest slot machine Avalanche multiplier works

Each win in an unbroken chain raises the multiplier one step. The ladder resets to the start when a fall produces no new win, and on the next paid spin it begins again.

A worked chain at 50p

At 50p a spin (2.5p a line), imagine the first fall lands a line win worth 1x the stake, 50p, paid at 1x. The blocks break and the refill makes another line worth 50p; the multiplier is now 2x, so it pays £1. A third win worth 25p at 3x pays 75p. A fourth worth 50p at 5x pays £2.50. The chain has paid £4.75 from one 50p stake. These values are illustrative; the paytable gives the real symbol pays.

The point of the example is the shape: late links in a chain are worth far more than early ones. That is why chains of four or more are where most of the game’s bigger results sit, and why most spins, which end after one win or none, pay modestly.

Gonzo's Quest free spins: the Free Falls bonus

The bonus round is called Free Falls, the game’s version of free spins. It starts when three gold Free Fall symbols land on reels one, two and three along an active payline.

  1. Three Free Fall symbols line up on a payline across the first three reels.
  2. Ten Free Falls are awarded at the triggering stake.
  3. During the round the Avalanche ladder is tripled: 3x, 6x, 9x, then 15x for the fourth win in a chain and beyond.
  4. Three more Free Fall symbols on a payline add another 10 Free Falls.
  5. When the falls run out, the total is credited to your balance.

Because the round uses the increasing multipliers in free spins model, a long chain inside Free Falls is the main route to the 2,500x cap. Most bonus rounds fall well short of that; a modest total is the typical outcome, not a disappointment.

The question mark wild

The stone carved with a question mark is the wild. It substitutes for any paying symbol to complete a line but not for the Free Fall symbol. It has no multiplier of its own; its value comes from extending chains, since an extra win keeps the ladder climbing.

Gonzo's Quest RTP and volatility explained

The published Gonzo's Quest RTP is 95.97%, which is a 4.03% house edge. It sits a little below the 96% that many newer games quote. Some casinos may run a different setting; the RTP line in the game rules is the figure that applies.

Volatility is medium. Single wins and short chains are common, and the climbing multiplier gives the occasional strong spin without the very long gaps of games such as Dead or Alive. The 2,500x cap is also modest by current standards, which limits how wide the spread of outcomes can be.

Gonzo's Quest Megaways and other versions

Red Tiger, a NetEnt sister studio within Evolution, made Gonzo's Quest Megaways, which keeps the Avalanche idea but runs it on six reels of varying height. NetEnt has also released Gonzo's Quest 2; check its help screen for current figures. Our Gonzo's Quest vs Gonzo's Quest Megaways comparison sets the first two side by side.

The Megaways version trades the original’s steadier profile for a much higher ceiling and wider swings, and its published RTP is slightly lower.

Gonzo's Quest demo and the help screen

A Gonzo's Quest demo is free demo play, after age verification. UK-licensed casinos must check that you are 18 or over before offering a free-to-play game, and demo results must reflect the real-money maths.

  1. Open the game’s menu and choose the paytable or game rules.
  2. Find the multiplier ladder for base game and Free Falls to confirm 1x–5x and 3x–15x.
  3. Read how Free Fall symbols must land: reels one to three on an active payline.
  4. Note the RTP statement and compare it with the published 95.97%.
  5. Look for the maximum win statement.

How UK rules change the Gonzo's Quest slot

Since 31 October 2021, UK versions of online slots have had no autoplay, no turbo, a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin and no celebration of returns at or below the stake; the Remote Technical Standards (opens in a new tab) set these out. For Gonzo's Quest the falling animation fits inside that time, and each chain plays out at a measured pace.

Stake limits of £5 per spin (25 and over) and £2 per spin (18–24) apply on top, and you must pass age checks before any play. Our page on the 2.5-second spin rule explains how the game cycle is measured.

Gonzo's Quest myths and facts

  • “After a long chain the next spin is weaker.” Each spin starts from a fresh random result; previous chains have no influence.
  • “You can time the spin to catch a chain.” The outcome is set before the blocks fall, and the speed you press makes no difference. See does the speed of spinning matter.
  • “Two Free Fall symbols mean the third is close.” A near miss is just another losing outcome; see slot machine near misses.
  • “Higher stakes have better odds.” The RTP is the same at every stake.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Gonzo's Quest RTP?

The published Gonzo's Quest RTP is 95.97%, so the house edge is 4.03%. Over a very large number of spins that means about £95.97 returned per £100 staked, but short sessions vary widely. Some UK casinos may run a different RTP setting, and the figure in the game’s rules is the one that applies to you. Our explainer on what a good RTP for a slot is compares it with typical online figures.

What is the Gonzo's Quest max win?

Gonzo's Quest has a published max win of 2,500 times the stake. At 20p that is £500, at the £2 stake limit for 18–24s it is £5,000, and at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over it is £12,500. Reaching it normally needs a long Avalanche chain during Free Falls, where multipliers reach 15x, and there are no published odds for it. For how caps are applied, read about max win caps.

How do you trigger Free Falls in Gonzo's Quest?

You need three gold Free Fall symbols on reels one, two and three along an active payline. That awards 10 Free Falls, during which the Avalanche multiplier ladder becomes 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x. Landing three more Free Fall symbols on a payline during the round adds another 10. Like every other outcome, the trigger is random and cannot be forced. Our guide to how many spins until a bonus explains why averages tell you little about the next trigger.

How does the Avalanche multiplier work?

Every consecutive win in a single chain moves the multiplier up one step: 1x for the first win, then 2x, 3x and 5x in the base game. When a fall produces no new win, the chain ends and the multiplier resets for the next spin. In Free Falls the steps are 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x. Because later wins carry larger multipliers, long chains produce most of the bigger results. Our cascading reels page compares how other games use the same idea.

Is Gonzo's Quest high or medium volatility?

Gonzo's Quest is rated medium volatility. Short wins and single-step chains are common, the occasional long chain lifts a session, and the 2,500x cap limits the very top end. It is steadier than high-volatility games but still loses money for most players over time, because the 4.03% house edge applies to every spin. For help reading volatility labels, see medium volatility slot machines.

Can I play a Gonzo's Quest demo?

UK-licensed casinos offer it as free demo play once they have verified that you are an adult. Since May 2019, sites must confirm you are at least 18 before letting you use free-to-play games, so you will generally need an account. Demo outcomes must follow the real game’s maths, which makes a demo a fair way to see how often chains form. It cannot predict any real-money result. Our demo vs real money slots comparison goes into the differences.

How much does Gonzo's Quest cost per 100 spins?

On long-run average, 100 spins at £1 cost about £4.03, because £100 is staked and the house edge is 4.03%. At 20p a spin the average is about 81p, and at the £5 limit for over-25s about £20.15. Any actual session of 100 spins will vary, often by much more than the average in either direction. Budget for the possibility of losing the full amount staked. Use the slot cost calculator to work through your own stake.

What is the difference between Gonzo's Quest and Gonzo's Quest Megaways?

The original is a NetEnt 20-payline slot with a 95.97% RTP, medium volatility and a 2,500x cap. The Megaways version by Red Tiger runs on six reels with up to 117,649 ways, a published 95.77% default RTP, medium-high volatility and a 21,000x cap. Both use falling symbols and climbing multipliers, but the Megaways game swings much more. Our Gonzo's Quest vs Gonzo's Quest Megaways comparison has the full detail.

Can you stop the reels early on Gonzo's Quest?

No, and it would make no difference if you could. Slam-stop and turbo features have been banned on UK online slots since 31 October 2021, and every spin must take at least 2.5 seconds. More importantly, the outcome is fixed by the random number generator before the blocks begin to fall, so nothing you do during the animation changes the result. Can you stop a slot spin early? explains the rule and the maths.

Is Gonzo's Quest a good slot for beginners?

It can be, because the rules are short and the multiplier ladder is easy to follow on screen. Medium volatility means fewer very long dry spells than many modern games. The trade-off is a published RTP of 95.97%, slightly below the 96% many newer slots quote. Start with a low stake and a fixed budget. Our slots for beginners guide covers the basics, from stakes to safer gambling tools.
