The Hand of Anubis slot is a Hacksaw Gaming cluster pays game from April 2022: matching groups of five or more symbols win anywhere on a 30-position grid, cascades refill the gaps and multiplier orbs grow as they join wins. Its top RTP is 96.24%, volatility sits at 5 out of 5 and the max win is 10,000× stake.
Wins are clusters of 5+ touching symbols on a 30-position grid, with cascades after every win.
Soul Orb wilds carry multipliers that grow when they join winning clusters.
Bonus scatters lead to two different bonus rounds, depending on how many land in one sequence.
Max win is 10,000× stake: £1,000 at 10p, £20,000 at £2 and £50,000 at the £5 limit.

How the Hand of Anubis slot machine pays: clusters, not lines
There are no reels in the traditional sense and no paylines. The game fills a grid of 30 positions with symbols, and any group of five or more identical symbols touching horizontally or vertically is a win. This is the cluster pays system, the same family as Reactoonz or Aloha! Cluster Pays, dressed in an Egyptian underworld theme.
Bigger clusters pay more, and the paytable sets a value for each symbol at each cluster size. Because a win needs five connected symbols rather than three in a row, the game has fewer winning spins than a typical line slot, which is part of why its volatility is at the top of the scale. The cluster pays vs paylines comparison sets out the general differences.
One Hand of Anubis spin, step by step
You set the stake and press spin; the RNG fixes the first grid before anything appears.
The game looks for groups of five or more matching symbols that touch side by side or above and below.
Each winning cluster pays according to its size.
Winning symbols are removed and the symbols above fall into the gaps, with new ones dropping in from the top.
If the new grid contains clusters, they pay and cascade again; the sequence ends when no new clusters form.
Bonus scatters seen across the whole sequence are counted to see whether a bonus starts.
The cascade, sometimes called a tumble or avalanche, turns one paid spin into a chain of potential wins. It also explains why scatters are counted across the sequence rather than on one screen.
Soul Orb wilds and how their multipliers grow
The feature that gives the game its character is the Soul Orb, a wild that carries a multiplier. Slot databases describe two kinds:
Hand of Anubis Soul Orb types (as described in game listings)
Orb
How its multiplier grows
Best case
Red orb
Rises by 1 for each symbol in the winning cluster it joins
Large clusters
Blue orb
Rises by 1 for each winning cluster it joins
Long cascade chains
When more than one orb sits in the same cluster, their multipliers are combined. An illustrative example: a red orb sits in a seven-symbol cluster, so its multiplier grows by seven; a blue orb next to it has already joined two clusters during the cascade, so it has grown by two. Both now boost the next win they connect with. The exact starting values and how combined orbs are calculated are listed in the help screen, which is the authority for your version.
Orbs make big wins possible, but they don’t raise the RTP. The chance of orbs landing and growing is already priced into the 96.24% figure.
Hand of Anubis free spins and bonus rounds
Bonus scatters lead to two different features, and which one you get depends on how many scatters land in the same cascading sequence. Game listings describe them like this:
Underworld bonus (exactly three scatters). A round of 10 free spins in which the Hand of Anubis multipliers play a bigger role and can be extended. The round’s rules screen gives the precise extension rules.
Judgment bonus (four scatters). A separate, rarer feature that starts with three spins and is closer to a hold-and-respin style round.
Because the trigger is set by scatter count, you can’t choose between them, and in the UK you can’t buy either. Versions sold in other countries list separate RTPs for buying each bonus; those buy options are not part of slots supplied to Great Britain. Our explainer on bonus trigger odds shows how these chances are set in a game’s maths.
Hand of Anubis RTP: the cost of play in pounds
The top Hand of Anubis RTP is 96.24%, a house edge of 3.76%. Hacksaw also supplies lower settings for different markets, so the figure at a UK casino could be lower; open the rules to confirm. Here is what 96.24% means as an average over 100 spins:

Hand of Anubis max win at the UK stake limits
The Hand of Anubis max win is 10,000× stake. Online slot stakes in Great Britain are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, limits the government announced in February 2024 (opens in a new tab) and which took effect in April and May 2025.

A cap of this size is reached so rarely that it shouldn’t shape your decisions. What it does tell you is how far the game’s maths is stretched towards the extreme: lots of small or empty spins pay for a very long tail of rare, large outcomes.
What the UK version of Hand of Anubis leaves out
Hacksaw’s games often carry bonus buy menus in other markets. At UK-licensed casinos those are absent, and the British design rules apply: the Gambling Commission’s online games design changes (opens in a new tab) removed autoplay and speed features from 31 October 2021, set a 2.5-second minimum spin time and stopped games celebrating returns no bigger than the stake. That last rule matters on a cascade game, where a chain of tiny wins can add up to less than you staked; the UK version won’t play a win fanfare for it. See losses disguised as wins for detail.
Is Hand of Anubis worth it? Who the slot suits
Advantages
Clear cluster mechanics with visible multiplier growth
96.24% top RTP
Two distinct bonus rounds
High 10,000× ceiling for those who want that profile
Drawbacks
Top-of-scale volatility; long losing runs are normal
Bonus rules are more complex than a classic free spins round
Lower RTP versions exist
Cascade chains can show lots of activity that adds up to a loss
It suits adults who enjoy watching multipliers build and accept that most sessions will lose. It doesn’t suit anyone looking for steady play on a small budget. For a gentler Egyptian theme, Legacy of Egypt or the Egyptian slot machines guide offers alternatives.
“A big orb on screen means a big win is coming.” The orb’s value only matters if a cluster forms around it, and that is random.
“Long cascades are a sign the game is warming up.” Each spin is independent; there is no warm-up. Our article on slot patterns explains why.
“Three scatters then a near-fourth was almost the bigger bonus.” That is a near miss; it says nothing about future spins.
Hand of Anubis demo and checking the rules
The Hand of Anubis demo is free to play at many UK casinos once you have passed age verification. Use it to read the rules rather than to test a system:
Open the game and tap the information icon.
Read the RTP line and compare it with 96.24%.
Check the Soul Orb section for starting values and how orbs combine.
Read both bonus sections for the exact scatter counts.
Confirm the max win statement.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Hand of Anubis RTP?
The highest Hand of Anubis RTP is 96.24%. Over an extremely long run, that means about £96.24 is returned for every £100 staked, with the remaining 3.76% kept as the house edge. Hacksaw Gaming also supplies lower-RTP versions, and a casino can choose which to offer, so open the game rules at your casino to see the exact figure. Over one session the RTP tells you very little on a game this volatile. The high RTP slots guide puts the figure in context.
What is the Hand of Anubis max win?
The max win is 10,000 times your stake. That is £1,000 at a 10p stake, £10,000 at £1, £20,000 at the £2 maximum for players aged 18 to 24, and £50,000 at the £5 maximum for players aged 25 and over. The cap applies to a single game round, including the cascade sequence and any bonus. It is an extremely rare outcome and shouldn’t be treated as a realistic target. Our guide to max win caps explains how the limit is applied.
How do you get free spins on Hand of Anubis?
Free spins come from the Underworld bonus, which game listings say is triggered by exactly three bonus scatters landing within one cascading sequence and awards 10 free spins. Four scatters lead instead to the Judgment bonus, a different feature that starts with three spins. You can’t buy either bonus at UK-licensed casinos, so they only appear through normal play. Check the help screen for the full rules on your version. The page on what triggers a bonus round explains how trigger chances are built.
How does cluster pays work on Hand of Anubis?
A win is any group of five or more matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically anywhere on the 30-position grid. Larger clusters pay more. After a win, the winning symbols disappear and new ones fall in, which can create further clusters from the same paid spin. There are no paylines to count and the stake doesn’t change with the cluster size. For a deeper look at the system and how it differs from lines, see our guide to cluster pays slot machines.
What are Soul Orbs in Hand of Anubis?
Soul Orbs are wild symbols carrying multipliers that grow when they take part in wins. Game listings describe red orbs rising by one for each symbol in a winning cluster and blue orbs rising by one for each winning cluster they join, with orbs in the same cluster combining their values. They make large wins possible but are already counted in the 96.24% RTP, so they don’t improve your long-run odds. Our page on wild multipliers shows how similar mechanics work elsewhere.
Is Hand of Anubis very volatile?
Yes. It is rated 5 out of 5, the top of the volatility scale. In practice that means a high share of spins return little or nothing, and most of the game’s return comes from rare large wins, often in the bonus rounds. Budgets can run down quickly at higher stakes. If you play, choose a stake that gives you enough spins for your budget and decide in advance when you will stop. The high volatility slot machines guide explains what to expect.
Can I play Hand of Anubis for free?
You can play a free demo at many UK-licensed casinos, but only after your age has been verified, a requirement in force since May 2019. That means registering and passing identity checks first. The demo uses the same grid, orbs and bonuses, so it is a good way to understand the rules. It won’t show you what a real session will feel like, because short runs on a 5-out-of-5 volatility game vary hugely. The demo vs real money slots comparison explains the differences.
Why doesn’t Hand of Anubis have a bonus buy in the UK?
Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos don’t include bonus buy options, so Hand of Anubis can only trigger its bonuses through normal play. Versions in some other countries offer buy menus for both bonuses with their own RTPs, which is why overseas reviews mention them. There is no published Gambling Commission rule with a date that bans bonus buys; it reflects how games are supplied to Great Britain. Our page on bonus buy in the UK explains what is known.
Who makes Hand of Anubis?
Hand of Anubis is made by Hacksaw Gaming, a studio that began in 2018, is based in Malta and holds a Gambling Commission licence for Great Britain. It released the game in April 2022. Hacksaw is known for very volatile games with high max wins, and for supplying scratchcards and instant-win games as well as slots. Its best-known slot is Wanted Dead or a Wild. Our Hacksaw Gaming provider page covers the studio and its other games in more detail.
Can a cascade chain on Hand of Anubis still lose money?
Yes. A cascade can produce several small cluster wins that together add up to less than your stake, which is a net loss even though the screen showed winning clusters. Under UK design rules introduced in October 2021, the game must not celebrate a return that is equal to or less than your stake, and your net position for the session stays on screen so you can see the real result. Our explainer on why a slot win did not celebrate covers this rule.
