The Gonzo's Quest Megaways slot is Red Tiger's 2020 remake of NetEnt's explorer game, rebuilt on six reels with up to 117,649 ways. It keeps the falling-block avalanches and rising multipliers, adds random reel heights, and lists a 95.77% default RTP with a 21,000x stake cap. Here is how each part works and what it costs.
Six reels hold 2–7 symbols each, so the ways count changes on every spin, up to 117,649.
Winning blocks crumble and new ones fall in, and each avalanche in a row lifts the multiplier.
Default RTP is 95.77%: about £4.23 lost per £100 staked over the very long run.
Top prize is 21,000x stake, which is £42,000 at the £2 cap for 18–24s.
UK versions have no autoplay, no turbo and no feature buy.

What the Gonzo's Quest Megaways slot is
Gonzo's Quest started life as a NetEnt game: a five-reel slot where carved stone blocks fall into place instead of spinning, and wins smash away to let more blocks drop. Red Tiger, which sits in the same group as NetEnt, rebuilt that idea in 2020 on the Megaways engine, a reel system that Big Time Gaming licensed to other studios. Gambling Insider's report on the licence deal (opens in a new tab) covers how Red Tiger gained the right to use the mechanic.
The result keeps the parts players recognise from the original Gonzo's Quest, the avalanche and the multiplier ladder, while swapping fixed lines for a ways count that rises and falls every spin. That one change makes the game swingier: more possible combinations on a big spin, fewer on a small one.

How the Gonzo's Quest Megaways slot machine works
Every outcome is fixed by the random number generator the moment you press spin. The falling blocks are a way of showing you that result, not a process that decides it. In order, a single paid spin goes like this:
You choose a stake per spin. In Great Britain that is capped at £5 if you are 25 or over and £2 if you are 18 to 24.
The RNG picks a height for each of the six reels (2 to 7 blocks) and the symbols that fill them.
The game counts ways: matching symbols on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel pay, one per reel minimum.
Any winning blocks are paid and then shatter. Blocks above fall down and new ones drop in from the top.
If the new blocks form another win, the avalanche continues and the multiplier steps up a level.
When an avalanche produces no win, the sequence ends, the multiplier resets and you are shown your net result.
Why the Gonzo's Quest Megaways ways count keeps changing
On a ways game you don't pick lines. Instead, the number of ways equals the number of symbols on reel one, multiplied by the number on reel two, and so on. Because each Gonzo's Quest Megaways reel shows between two and seven blocks, the total jumps about from spin to spin. Our Megaways vs 243 ways comparison explains how that differs from a fixed grid.

More ways doesn't mean more money on its own. A spin with 117,649 ways also has more low-value symbols on screen, and the game's paytable is tuned so the long-run return stays at the published RTP whatever the ways count. What changes is the spread of results: tall reels create the rare long chains that build towards the top prize.
Avalanches and the rising multiplier
The avalanche is Gonzo's version of what other studios call cascading reels or a tumble. After a win the paying blocks break up and the gaps refill from above. Each further win in the same chain moves the multiplier one step up a ladder shown above the reels. The ladder in the main game is short and low; inside Free Falls the steps are larger.
Worked example with illustrative values
Suppose you stake £1 and the ladder reads 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x (the original game's base ladder; the remake's help screen lists its own values). Your first avalanche wins 40p at 1x. The refill wins 30p, now at 2x, so 60p. A third win of 50p at 3x pays £1.50. Then the next refill misses. The chain paid 40p + 60p + £1.50 = £2.50 on a £1 stake. Without the ladder the same three wins would have paid £1.20. That is why long chains matter so much in this game, and why most spins, which end after one avalanche or none, return little.
The multiplier resets to its first step at the start of every new paid spin. It does not carry over, and a long chain on one spin says nothing about the next.
Unbreakable Wilds and the Earthquake feature
Red Tiger added two extras that the original didn't have. The first is the Unbreakable Wild. Like any wild symbol it stands in for paying symbols, but when it forms part of a win it doesn't shatter with the other blocks. It stays put through the avalanche, so it can help form the next win in the same chain. The game's rules explain exactly where it can land and how long it stays.
The second is the Earthquake, a random base-game event that shakes the grid and removes the low-paying symbols from that spin, leaving only the higher-value masks and wilds. Fewer symbol types on the reels means a higher chance that whatever lands will connect. It can occur on any spin; the game does not publish how often, so treat it as a bonus when it happens rather than something to wait for.
Gonzo's Quest Megaways free spins: how Free Falls work
The bonus is called Free Falls. It starts when enough Free Fall scatter symbols land in one spin; the help screen states the number needed and how many falls each trigger awards. During the round your stake is fixed at the level that triggered it, the avalanche ladder starts higher and steps up faster, and landing more scatters adds extra falls. For the general mechanics, see how free spins work on slot machines.
Most of the game's return is concentrated here. Because the base-game ladder is modest, a typical session is a long run of small or no wins punctuated by a round of Free Falls that may pay a few times your stake or, very rarely, a great deal more. How often Free Falls arrives isn't published, and nothing you do changes it.
No feature buy: versions supplied to Great Britain don't let you pay to jump straight into Free Falls (see bonus buy in the UK).
Retriggers add falls to the current round; they don't reset the multiplier ladder.
The round ends when the falls run out, or immediately if the 21,000x cap is reached.
Gonzo's Quest Megaways RTP and the real cost of play
Gonzo's Quest Megaways RTP is listed at 95.77% for the default version. RTP is an average across millions of spins: for every £100 staked, about £95.77 comes back as wins overall and £4.23 is the house edge. Your own session can land far above or far below that, especially on a medium–high volatility game.

Gonzo's Quest Megaways max win at UK stake limits
The max win is 21,000 times your stake. It is a cap: once a spin or a Free Falls round reaches it, the game pays the capped amount and ends that feature. Reaching it needs a long chain of avalanches on tall reels at a high multiplier step, which is extremely rare.
Whether it suits you depends on how you feel about variance and on the slightly lower default RTP. The game is a good fit if you enjoy chains building on screen and accept long quiet spells; it is a poor fit if you want regular small returns.
Advantages
Avalanche chains and a visible multiplier ladder make results easy to follow.
Unbreakable Wilds and the Earthquake add variety to the base game.
A published 21,000x cap is higher than most medium–high games.
Drawbacks
95.77% default RTP is lower than many modern releases.
Most of the return arrives in Free Falls, so base play can feel slow.
Random reel heights mean many spins have few ways.
Myth: a spin with 117,649 ways is about to pay. The ways count is drawn fresh each spin and is already part of the result.
Myth: after a long dry spell, Free Falls is due. Every spin is independent; past spins don't change the next one. See the gambler's fallacy on slots.
Myth: the Earthquake predicts a big chain. It improves the symbol mix for that spin only.
Myth: some times of day pay better. The RNG has no clock-based setting, and the RTP is fixed by the game version.
Other Gonzo games and similar Megaways slots
The series now has three main entries: the original, this Megaways remake, and Gonzo's Quest 2. Among other Megaways titles with falling symbols, Bonanza Megaways is Big Time Gaming's own mining game and Extra Chilli Megaways adds a gamble on free spins. All are listed on our slots hub.
Gonzo's Quest Megaways demo and UK rules
A Gonzo's Quest Megaways demo lets you watch the avalanches with play credits. In Great Britain, demo play is only available after age verification, so you will need an account that has confirmed you are 18 or over; the demo slots guide explains the rule. Demo results come from the same maths, but the Commission's standard on play-for-free games (opens in a new tab) requires them to reflect real-money play rather than flatter it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Gonzo's Quest Megaways?
The default Gonzo's Quest Megaways RTP is 95.77%. That means about £95.77 of every £100 staked is returned as wins across millions of spins, with £4.23 kept as the house edge. It is an average, not a forecast for a session: on a medium–high volatility game your results over a few hundred spins can be far from it. Some casinos offer lower-RTP versions, so check the figure in the game's rules screen at the casino you use. Our RTP explainer covers the maths.
What is the max win on Gonzo's Quest Megaways?
The maximum win is 21,000 times your stake. At 10p that is £2,100, at £1 it is £21,000 and at £5, the UK limit for players aged 25 and over, it is £105,000. For 18–24s the £2 stake cap makes the ceiling £42,000. The figure is a cap, reached only in exceptionally rare chains, and the game stops paying once it is hit. Read more on max win caps.
How do you trigger Free Falls on Gonzo's Quest Megaways?
Free Falls starts when enough Free Fall scatter symbols land on a single spin; the game's help screen lists the exact number needed and the falls awarded. It can't be bought in UK versions. Inside the round the avalanche multiplier ladder starts higher, and more scatters add extra falls. How often it triggers isn't published and doesn't change with how long you have been playing. See free spins retriggers for how extra falls are added.
Is Gonzo's Quest Megaways high volatility?
It is rated medium–high volatility. In practice that means a lot of spins return nothing or less than your stake, with the bigger results concentrated in long avalanche chains and Free Falls. It is less extreme than the highest-variance Megaways games but noticeably bumpier than the five-reel original. If you want a steadier session, a lower volatility game may suit you better; our volatility guide explains the trade-off.
Who makes Gonzo's Quest Megaways?
Red Tiger made it, and it was released in 2020. The original Gonzo's Quest was a NetEnt game, and Red Tiger and NetEnt are sister studios within the same group, which is why the character and the avalanche idea carried over. Red Tiger uses the Megaways engine under a licence from Big Time Gaming. More of the studio's games are on our Red Tiger page.
Can I play a Gonzo's Quest Megaways demo in the UK?
Yes, but only after age verification. Since 2019 UK-licensed casinos have had to confirm you are 18 or over before letting you play free-to-play versions of their games. Once verified you can try the demo with play credits to see the avalanches and Free Falls. The maths matches the real game, but demo credits can make it easy to forget the real cost, so compare the cost tables above first. Details are in our demo age verification page.
How many ways to win does Gonzo's Quest Megaways have?
Up to 117,649. Each of its six reels shows between two and seven symbols, and the ways count is those heights multiplied together. With every reel at seven you get 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 = 117,649, while the minimum with every reel at two is 64. The count is random each spin. A high count doesn't raise the RTP; it changes the spread of outcomes. Our Megaways explainer has more.
What is the Earthquake feature?
The Earthquake is a random event in the base game that removes the low-paying symbols from the reels for that spin. With only higher-paying masks and wilds left, the blocks that land are more likely to form wins, so the spin tends to pay better than average. It is decided by the RNG like everything else and can't be triggered on purpose. It doesn't signal anything about later spins. See random features for similar mechanics.
Is Gonzo's Quest Megaways better than the original Gonzo's Quest?
Neither is better overall; they suit different players. The Megaways version has a higher published cap at 21,000x, more variety through Unbreakable Wilds and the Earthquake, and bigger swings. The original is simpler, steadier and uses fixed paylines. Check each game's RTP at your casino, because versions vary. Our side-by-side comparison lays out the differences in mechanics, maths and cost per 100 spins.
Can you stop the reels early on Gonzo's Quest Megaways?
No. Online slots in Great Britain have not been allowed slam-stop or turbo since 31 October 2021, and each spin must last at least 2.5 seconds. Even where stopping early was allowed in the past, it made no difference: the result is set by the RNG the instant you press spin and the animation only reveals it. Read is stopping the reels a skill for the full explanation.
