The tumble meaning in slots is a feature where winning symbols disappear after they pay, the symbols above fall into the gaps and new ones drop in from the top, so a single paid spin can produce a chain of wins. “Tumble” is the name Pragmatic Play uses; other studios call the same idea cascades, avalanches or reactions.
A tumble removes winning symbols and refills the grid, giving another chance to win on the same stake.
The whole chain counts as one paid spin and one game cycle.
Tumbles are built into the slot’s RTP: they don’t add value on top of it.
Under UK rules a chain that pays back no more than your stake can’t be celebrated as a win.

What tumble means in a slot game
A tumble is one step in a chain of wins on a single spin. When symbols form a win, the game pays it, removes those symbols, lets the rest fall and fills the empty spaces from above. If the new arrangement contains another win, it tumbles again, and so on until nothing pays. The cascading reels page covers the mechanic in full; this entry explains the word.
Tumbles suit games that pay for symbol counts rather than lines. Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus pay for 8 or more matching symbols anywhere on a 6 × 5 grid, so removing and refilling symbols keeps creating new combinations. That style is known as pays anywhere. You’ll find more terms like this in the glossary.
How a tumble sequence works, step by step
You pay for one spin at your chosen stake.
The grid lands and the game checks for winning combinations.
Each win is added to a running total for the spin.
Winning symbols are removed and the remaining symbols drop down.
New symbols fill the gaps from the top of each reel.
Steps 2 to 5 repeat until a refill creates no new win; the total is then added to your balance.
Every new symbol comes from the game’s random number generator and reel sets, and the full chain belongs to the one game you paid for. Nothing you do between tumbles changes it.

Chain A shows why tumbles can feel busier than they are: two wins, yet the spin still lost money. Since 31 October 2021, UK online slots must not celebrate a return equal to or below the stake, a rule set out in the Gambling Commission’s summary of RTS changes (opens in a new tab). Our page on the losses disguised as wins rule explains it.
Slots that use tumbles
Pragmatic Play, whose studio site (opens in a new tab) lists its catalogue, uses the tumble name across many grid games. Relax Gaming even puts it in titles. All of these are on our slot fact sheets:
No. A game’s RTP already includes every tumble it can produce, so the 96.48% on Sweet Bonanza is the return with tumbles, not before them. What tumbles change is how wins arrive: lots of small chains, with the occasional long one that carries a game’s top wins. That shape often goes with high volatility, as on Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus.
At UK stake limits, 100 spins at £1 is £100 staked; at 96.5% the long-run average cost is £3.50. Players aged 18 to 24 are capped at £2 a spin, and over-25s at £5, whatever happens in the tumble chain.

Frequently asked questions
What does tumble mean on a slot?
Tumble means the winning symbols are removed after they pay, the others drop down and new symbols fill the gaps, so you can win again on the same spin. The chain continues until a refill creates no win. It costs nothing extra, because the whole chain is part of the spin you paid for. Tumble is Pragmatic Play’s name; see cascading reels for the general mechanic and the variations studios use.
Is tumble the same as avalanche or cascade?
Yes, they describe the same idea. Pragmatic Play calls it tumble, NetEnt and ELK Studios use avalanche, Big Time Gaming says reactions, and many others say cascading reels. The details differ by game, such as whether multipliers grow with each step, but the core is the same: wins are removed and replaced on one paid spin. Our entry on avalanche explains the version made famous by Gonzo’s Quest.
Do tumbles cost extra?
No. You pay your stake once, and every tumble that follows is part of the same game. The cost is already priced into the slot’s RTP, which includes all tumble wins, so tumbles don’t give you anything on top of the published return. They change how wins are spread out, not how much the game pays back over time. Our page on how much slot machines pay out explains RTP in pounds.
Can I predict how long a tumble chain will last?
No. Each refill is drawn by the game’s random number generator, and the chain ends as soon as a refill creates no new win. A long chain on the last spin says nothing about the next one, because every spin is independent. Watching patterns or timing your spins won’t help. Our guides to whether slot machines have patterns and slot machine myths explain why.
Why didn’t my tumble win celebrate?
If the total for the whole chain was equal to or less than your stake, UK rules stop the game celebrating it as a win. A £1 spin that pays 40p and then 25p across two tumbles has still lost 35p, so you won’t see win music or animations for it. That rule has applied to online slots in Great Britain since 31 October 2021. Read why did my slot win not celebrate for more.
Which slots use the tumble feature?
Well-known examples include Sweet Bonanza, Gates of Olympus, Sugar Rush and Fruit Party from Pragmatic Play, Extra Juicy Megaways, and Relax Gaming’s TNT Tumble and Temple Tumble Megaways. Most pay for symbol counts or clusters rather than lines, which suits removing and refilling symbols. Check each game’s help screen for how its tumbles work. Our cluster pays slot machines page lists related games.
Does the 2.5-second rule apply to each tumble?
The UK minimum of 2.5 seconds applies to the game cycle, which is the whole paid spin including its tumbles, rather than each step. So a tumble chain doesn’t start a new game, and it doesn’t let you stake again until the cycle is finished. Online slots must also show your net position and can’t offer autoplay or turbo. Our page on the spin speed rule explains the timing in detail.
