Pirots 3 slot explained

The Pirots 3 slot is a high-volatility ELK Studios game with a fixed 94% RTP, where four coloured birds collect matching gems on a grid that reaches 8 × 7 instead of paying along lines. Released in 2024, it adds a Wild West bandit who duels the birds, a Coin Game and a free drops bonus to the series formula.

Key takeaways

  • Pirots 3 has no paylines: each bird collects gems of its own colour and every collection pays.
  • The RTP is 94% in every published version, so the long-run cost is £6 per £100 staked.
  • The caged Bandit, his duels with the birds and the Coin Game are new to the third game.
  • Volatility is high: long quiet runs are normal and most of the return sits in features.
  • UK versions have no autoplay, no turbo and no bonus buy, and each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds.

How the Pirots 3 slot machine works, step by step

Pirots 3 throws out the idea of a payline altogether. When you press spin, the random number generator fills the grid with coloured gems, a few special symbols and four parrots: red, green, blue and purple. Each bird then walks across the grid picking up gems of its own colour. A gem only counts if it sits next to the bird, and each pick-up can lead the bird on to the next matching gem, so one bird can wander a long way in a single spin.

ELK Studios calls this collection system CollectR, and it is the thread that runs through the whole Pirots series. The difference from a normal video slot is that you never line up symbols from left to right. You are watching a chain: gems collected, the gap refilled, the birds moving again, until no bird can reach a matching gem.

  1. Choose your stake. It is fixed for the whole spin, including any chain of collections that follows.
  2. Press spin once. UK versions have no autoplay, so every paid spin needs its own press.
  3. The grid fills with gems, birds and any feature symbols the RNG has picked.
  4. Each bird collects adjacent gems of its colour; each collected gem pays its value at your stake.
  5. Empty spaces refill and the birds keep collecting until nothing more can be reached.
  6. Feature symbols such as dynamite, horseshoes or coin bags apply their effect along the way.
  7. The total for the spin is added to your balance, and your net position for the session stays on screen.

The outcome of the whole spin, chain included, is set by the RNG the moment you press spin. The bird walk is how the result is shown, not a process you can influence.

Pirots 3 gems, upgrades and special symbols

There are four gem colours, one for each bird, and each gem can sit at several upgrade levels. A higher level pays more per gem, so a bird that collects ten upgraded red gems can pay far more than one that clears twenty basic blue ones. The game’s paytable lists the value of every colour at every level; read it before playing, because values are shown as multiples of your stake.

Published game descriptions list these supporting symbols. The exact rules for each are set out in the help screen, which is the version that applies to the copy you are playing.

Pirots 3 special symbols and what they do
SymbolWhat it doesWhy it matters
Bandit wildStands in for gems so a bird can keep walkingKeeps chains going that would otherwise stop
PeanutFills empty spacesGives birds a path to gems further away
TransformTurns gems next to a bird into that bird’s colourCreates instant collections
DynamiteClears symbols and expands the gridTakes the play area towards the full 8 × 7
HorseshoeUpgrades gems of one colourRaises the value of later collections
Golden horseshoeUpgrades gems of every colourThe strongest upgrade in the base game
Coin bagPays a cash value at your stakeCollected in the Coin Game

Upgrades and grid expansion are where the volatility comes from. A plain spin with small gems pays pennies; a spin where a golden horseshoe lands early and dynamite opens the grid can keep paying for a long chain. Most spins are the first kind.

The Bandit, the duels and the Pirots 3 Coin Game

The new character in Pirots 3 is a bandit who starts the game locked in a cage in the corner of the grid. According to the game descriptions, a bird can hand him the key, and once he is out he duels the birds. Each duel he wins pays the cash he takes from the bird. If he clears every bird from the screen he makes his escape and the Coin Game starts.

The Coin Game is a short cash collect style round. Coin bags carry values that are paid at your stake, and one special coin pays whatever is needed to reach the game’s maximum. Because it can only start after a run of base-game events, it is not something you can aim for. Treat it as a bonus that appears when the RNG lines it up.

The Train Heist

Some spins show a train behind the grid. When a bird collects gems over the train, the descriptions say it is handed one to three feature symbols before it moves on. It is a small extra source of upgrades rather than a separate round, and it cannot be bought.

Pirots 3 free spins: the free drops bonus

ELK uses the term free drops rather than free spins, but the idea is the same. Landing three scatter symbols starts the bonus, where you get a set of drops at no extra cost to your balance. During the bonus a vault fills up, releasing random multipliers and moonshine symbols that can turn into feature symbols. A bigger Super Bonus is played on the full 8 × 7 grid and can be reached through the regular bonus.

The help screen states how many drops you start with and how retriggers work. We don’t quote a trigger rate, because ELK doesn’t publish one and any figure from a short sample is meaningless. What you can say with confidence is that a high-volatility game like this puts a large share of its 94% return into the bonus, so the base game will often pay back less than you stake.

Pirots 3 RTP: what 94% costs at UK stakes

The Pirots 3 RTP is 94%, the same as the first two games. That is below the 96% many online slots aim for, and it matters over time. RTP is a long-run average across millions of spins: for every £100 staked, about £94 comes back on average and £6 is the house edge. In any one session you can be well up or well down.

Pirots 3 cost per 100 spins at 94% RTP
Stake per spinTotal stakedAverage returnAverage cost
20p£20£18.80£1.20
50p£50£47£3
£1£100£94£6
£2 (limit for 18–24s)£200£188£12
£5 (limit for 25+)£500£470£30

Compare that with a 96% slot: 100 spins at £1 would cost £4 on average instead of £6. The gap looks small per spin but adds up across a long session. Our guide to what is a good RTP for a slot puts these numbers in context.

Pirots 3 max win and volatility

We have not been able to confirm the Pirots 3 max win from a source we trust, so we don’t print a figure here. The help screen states the cap in the version you are playing, usually as a multiple of the stake. Once you have it, multiply by your stake: whatever the cap, it is reached only by a tiny share of spins, and the RTP already includes those rare results.

High volatility means the return is lumpy. You can expect long spells of small collections, punctuated by the occasional strong chain or bonus. Our page on high volatility slot machines shows why a budget for this kind of game needs to allow for long dry runs, and the max win caps page explains how a cap ends a round once it is reached.

Pirots 3 vs Pirots and Pirots 2

All three games share the same idea, birds collecting gems with no lines, and the same 94% RTP. The changes are in the grid, the theme and the extra characters.

If you liked the first game’s collection chains but want more going on, the third adds more interruptions to the base game. If you prefer simplicity, the original is the cleanest version of the idea. Our Pirots vs Pirots 2 comparison covers the first two in detail.

Is the Pirots 3 slot worth playing?

Advantages

  • A genuinely different way of paying, with no lines to follow
  • Lots happening on most spins: upgrades, dynamite, duels
  • Fixed 94% RTP, so no hunting for the best version
  • Full feature set in the demo after age verification

Drawbacks

  • 94% is a below-average return; it costs more over time than a 96% slot
  • High volatility can drain a small budget quickly
  • Busy screen: the rules take some reading before they make sense
  • Max win not published in a source we could verify

It suits players who enjoy watching a chain play out and accept that the price is a lower RTP. If your main aim is to make a budget last, a low volatility slot machine with a higher RTP will usually stretch further.

Pirots 3 myths and what is really happening

  • A bird near a big gem cluster is about to pay. The result is already fixed when the spin starts; the walk is the reveal.
  • The Bandit is due to escape after a long wait. Each spin is independent. There is no memory that brings the Coin Game closer.
  • Bigger stakes trigger the bonus more often. The stake changes the size of wins, not the odds of a scatter.
  • A strong demo run means the real game is paying. Demo results are random too and say nothing about your next real spin.

Our slot machine myths guide goes through the wider list, including why near misses don’t mean a win is close.

How to check the Pirots 3 RTP and rules in the game

Published listings such as gambling.com’s Pirots 3 page (opens in a new tab) give a starting point, but the copy that counts is the one inside the game. UK licensees must show the rules and the return clearly; the Gambling Commission’s technical standard on game information (opens in a new tab) sets that out.

  1. Open Pirots 3 at the casino, in demo or real-money mode.
  2. Tap the menu or the i symbol to open the game help screen.
  3. Scroll to the section headed return to player or theoretical return.
  4. Check the stated maximum win and the gem values for each upgrade level.
  5. Read the bonus rules for the number of drops and how the Super Bonus is reached.

UK rules that shape the Pirots 3 slot

The UK version of Pirots 3 follows the Commission’s responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab), in force since 31 October 2021. Each spin, chain included, takes at least 2.5 seconds; there is no autoplay and no turbo; and a return equal to or smaller than your stake can’t be celebrated as a win. The buy options sold in some other markets don’t appear in versions supplied to Great Britain; our page on bonus buy in the UK explains the background.

Stake limits apply per spin: £5 if you are 25 or over (since 9 April 2025) and £2 if you are 18 to 24 (since 21 May 2025). The online slot stake limits page has the detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pirots 3 RTP?

The Pirots 3 RTP is 94%, the same as the first two games in the series. That means that across millions of spins the game returns about £94 for every £100 staked, so the average cost is £6 per £100. A single session can land far from that average in either direction because the game is high volatility. Always confirm the figure in the help screen of the copy you are playing. Our RTP explainer shows how the average works and why it only settles over a very large number of spins.

What is the Pirots 3 max win?

Sources disagree on the Pirots 3 max win and we couldn’t settle it, so there is no figure here. ELK’s own rules screen inside the game gives the cap for your version, written as a multiple of the bet. Multiply it by your stake to see the cash amount. Remember that the cap is reached only on an extremely small share of spins, and when it is reached the round ends. See our page on max win caps for how caps work across different slots.

How do the birds work in Pirots 3?

Each of the four birds collects gems of its own colour that sit next to it, and each collected gem pays. After a pick-up the bird can carry on to the next adjacent matching gem, so a single bird can clear a long trail. Empty spaces refill and the birds keep going until none can reach a match. There are no lines involved at all. The Pirots page explains how the same system worked in the first game, which used a smaller grid.

Does Pirots 3 have free spins?

Yes, although ELK calls them free drops. Three scatter symbols start the bonus, which gives you a set of drops at no cost to your balance while a vault fills and releases multipliers and extra feature symbols. A larger Super Bonus is played on the full grid and can be reached from the regular bonus. The help screen lists the number of drops and the retrigger rules. Our free spins feature guide covers how these rounds work in general.

Can I play the Pirots 3 demo for free?

You can play the Pirots 3 demo with no stake, after age verification. In Great Britain, free-to-play versions of gambling games can only be offered once the casino has checked you are 18 or over, a rule in place since May 2019. The demo uses play credits and shows every feature, which makes it a sensible way to learn the gem upgrades and the Bandit before spending money. Our demo slots guide explains what demos can and can’t tell you.

Who makes Pirots 3?

Pirots 3 is made by ELK Studios, a Stockholm-based developer founded in 2013 that holds a Gambling Commission licence. ELK is known for the Pirots series and for the Wild Toro games, as well as titles such as Nitropolis and Cygnus. Its games are supplied to many UK casinos through their game libraries, though availability changes over time. Our ELK Studios provider page lists the studio’s best-known slots with their published RTPs and layouts.

Is Pirots 3 a high volatility slot?

Yes, Pirots 3 is rated high volatility. In practice that means many spins return little or nothing, while a smaller number of spins with upgrades, grid expansion or the bonus produce much larger collections. A budget for this kind of game should assume long quiet stretches. If you want steadier, smaller returns, a lower-volatility game will usually suit better. Our volatility guide explains how volatility and RTP work together and why neither predicts a single session.

What is the difference between Pirots 2 and Pirots 3?

Both pay through birds collecting gems and both return 94%, but Pirots 3 moves to a Wild West theme and a grid that reaches 8 × 7. It adds the caged Bandit who duels the birds, a Coin Game that follows his escape and a train that hands out feature symbols. Pirots 2 is simpler, with birds collecting amber on a 6 × 6 grid that grows to 8 × 8. See the Pirots 2 slot page for the earlier game.

Can I buy the Pirots 3 bonus in the UK?

No. In some markets Pirots 3 is sold with options to buy the bonus or release the Bandit early, but versions supplied to players in Great Britain don’t include feature buys. You reach the bonus only by landing the scatters during normal play. That keeps each paid spin at your chosen stake and within the £5 or £2 per-spin limits. See bonus buy in the UK for the wider picture.

Why does Pirots 3 show wins that are smaller than my stake?

A chain of small collections can add up to less than you staked, so you can see gems being collected yet still lose money on the spin. UK rules since 31 October 2021 stop games celebrating those returns with win sounds or animations, and your net position is shown on screen so you can see where the session stands. Watch the balance rather than the animation. Our page on the losses disguised as wins rule explains how the rule works.
