What is the Mental slot machine?

Mental is one of the best-known games from Nolimit City, the Malta-registered studio owned by Evolution since 2022. It is set in a run-down psychiatric hospital and its imagery is deliberately disturbing, so it is a game for adults who are comfortable with horror. Behind the theme is a maths model built for extreme swings: most of its value sits in rare, very large outcomes.

Unusually, Nolimit City publishes several statistics for the game on its own page. They make it easier to understand what extreme volatility means in pounds, and we use them throughout this guide.

How the Mental slot works: grid, ways and spins

Mental has five reels of uneven height: three symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5 and two on reels 2 and 4. Multiplying them gives 3 × 2 × 3 × 2 × 3 = 108 ways. Wins pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, in any row, as on other ways-to-win slots. The small base count is why the game relies on modifiers to make wins worthwhile.

  1. Set your stake: up to £5 a spin if you are 25 or over, £2 if you are 18 to 24.
  2. Spin. The RNG fixes every symbol and modifier before the reels animate.
  3. Any xWays or xSplit symbols resolve, changing the shape of the grid and the number of ways.
  4. Spider and Dead symbols apply their effects, then the game counts every winning way.
  5. If three scorpion scatters are in view, one of the three free spins rounds begins.

Hit frequency of 34.19% means roughly two spins in three return nothing. Many of the remaining third return less than the stake, which UK rules forbid the game from celebrating as a win. Our explainer on hit frequency shows why a high hit rate and a high cost can go together.

Mental xWays and xSplit symbols

The two Nolimit City mechanics that make Mental work are xWays and xSplit. An xWays symbol opens to reveal a stack of one matching paying symbol, which makes that reel taller and adds ways. An xSplit symbol, according to the developer, splits the symbols to its left into two, adding more ways, and the xSplit symbols then turn wild. An xSplit landing to the right of a scatter can upgrade it to a super scatter. The developer also lists xNudge among the game's mechanics.

Here is how the ways count can grow (an illustrative example, not a specific spin):

xWays reveals 4 on reel 2 and 3 on reel 43-4-3-3-3324
Splits double two reels as well6-8-3-3-31,296

The exact number of symbols revealed and which positions split are set by the game, so read the help screen for the precise rules. Our split symbols page compares xSplit with other splitting mechanics.

Spiders, Dead symbols and Mental Transform

Two special symbols shape the base game. When a Spider lands, it triggers Mental Transform, which changes symbols on the reels; it works much like other symbol transformation features but is central to the bonus rounds too. Landing two Dead symbols gives a chance of a random multiplier between x5 and x9,999 being applied to a patient symbol, according to Nolimit City.

The developer's page also mentions enhancer cells, marked by Fire Frames, that boost the chance of xWays, xSplit and other modifiers landing when four or six frames appear. The precise behaviour is written up in the game's rules, which are worth reading in full before you stake money, because few slots have this many interacting parts.

Multipliers this large sound dramatic, but they are part of the 96.08% RTP, not on top of it. A rare x9,999 is paid for by many spins that return nothing.

Mental free spins: Autopsy, Lobotomy and Mental rounds

Mental has three free spins rounds, and which one you get depends on what lands with the three scorpion scatters. Nolimit City describes them as follows; the help screen gives the number of spins for each.

Mental's three free spins rounds
RoundTriggerKey behaviour
Autopsy Free Spins3 scorpionsFire Frames stay put; can upgrade to Lobotomy or Mental
Lobotomy Free Spins3 scorpions + 1 spiderSticky spider gives Mental Transform every spin; Dead multiplier carries to a patient symbol; can upgrade to Mental
Mental Free Spins3 scorpions + 2 spidersSpiders are sticky and the Dead multiplier never decreases

The structure is a ladder. Autopsy is the entry point, Lobotomy adds a transform on every spin, and Mental Free Spins keeps a multiplier that can only rise. If the 66,666x ceiling is reached, the round ends at once. Because the stronger rounds need extra spiders at the moment of triggering, they are rarer than the 1 in 216 average for free spins as a whole.

Mental RTP and cost per 100 spins

The Mental RTP is 96.08% in the default version. That is a long-run figure: over millions of spins, £3.92 of every £100 staked is kept by the game. Some casinos may run a lower setting from the developer's range of RTP variants. Under the Gambling Commission's rules on game descriptions and RTP (opens in a new tab), the figure for your version must be available in the game.

Mental average cost per 100 spins at 96.08% RTP
StakeStakedAverage cost (3.92%)
10p£1039p
20p£2078p
50p£50£1.96
£1£100£3.92
£2£200£7.84
£5£500£19.60

On an extreme-volatility game those averages are almost never what a session looks like. Over 100 spins the realistic range runs from losing nearly the whole amount to a rare large result. That spread, not the 3.92% edge, is what a budget needs to absorb.

How long until the Mental bonus? The 1 in 216 maths

A 1 in 216 chance on every spin doesn't mean the feature comes every 216 spins. Each spin is independent, so gaps vary widely. Using simple probability, here is how often you'd expect to still be waiting:

Chance of no free spins yet in Mental (1 in 216 per spin)
Spins playedStaked at 20pChance of no feature yet
100£20About 63%
216£43.20About 37%
500£100About 10%
1,000£200About 1%

So more than a third of the time, a player who stakes £43.20 at 20p still hasn't seen the feature, and around one in ten will spend £100 at that stake without it. And when it does arrive, an Autopsy round can pay little. Our pages on bonus trigger odds and how many spins until a bonus explain the same maths for other games.

Mental max win at UK stake limits

The Mental max win is 66,666 times your stake, and Nolimit City puts the chance of reaching it at 1 in 18 million spins. At the UK minimum of 2.5 seconds a spin, 18 million spins would take about 12,500 hours of continuous play. That is why the figure is best read as a description of the game's shape, not something to aim for.

Is the Mental slot worth it? Who it suits

Advantages

  • Developer publishes hit rate, feature rate and max-win odds
  • Default RTP of 96.08%
  • Three-tier bonus with very high ceiling
  • Distinctive mechanics found mainly at Nolimit City

Drawbacks

  • Extreme volatility: long losing runs are normal
  • Graphic, disturbing theme
  • Complex rules with many interacting symbols
  • Small 108-way base grid means many dead spins

Mental suits adults who understand that most sessions will lose and who play with a fixed amount set aside as entertainment spending. It doesn't suit a small budget looking for a long session; a low-volatility slot stretches the same money much further. Compare it with others on our most volatile slots page and use session limits if you play it.

Myths about the Mental slot

  • 'It's been 300 spins, the bonus must be close.' The chance is about 1 in 216 on every spin, however long you've waited.
  • 'Two spiders and no scorpions means a big round is coming.' Each spin is drawn fresh; nothing builds between paid spins in the base game.
  • 'A high hit rate means it's cheap.' 34.19% of spins return something, but many return less than the stake.
  • 'You can wait for the game to warm up.' Slots have no memory. See do slot machines remember past spins.
  • 'Bigger stakes trigger the bonus more often.' The feature rate is the same at 10p and £5; only the cost changes.

The UK version of Mental and the Mental demo

Nolimit City's page lists a feature buy for Mental in some markets. Slots at UK-licensed casinos don't offer it, so the British version is played only through normal spins; see bonus buy in the UK. The UK version also has no autoplay, a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin and no turbo, under the 2021 slot design changes (opens in a new tab) to the remote technical standards. Read more on our slot game design rules page.

The Mental demo is offered as free demo play, after age verification, at UK casinos that provide demos. It runs the same maths, so it's a sensible way to learn the three bonus tiers before deciding whether the game is for you.

Mental 2 is the sequel and is a separate game with its own maths. Other extreme titles from the studio include San Quentin xWays, Tombstone RIP and Das xBoot. Our slot sequels guide explains why a follow-up can differ sharply from the original.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Mental RTP?

The Mental RTP is 96.08% in its default setting, according to Nolimit City. Over a very large number of spins the game returns an average of £96.08 for each £100 staked. Because Mental is extreme volatility, real sessions rarely look like that average: most lose more, and a few pay far more. Your casino may run a lower RTP version, so check the figure in the game's rules. Our guide to how to find a slot's RTP shows where to look.

What is the Mental max win?

The Mental max win is 66,666 times your stake, and the round ends when it is reached. Nolimit City puts the chance at 1 in 18 million spins. At the £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds that ceiling is £133,332; at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over it is £333,330. Treat it as a description of the game's shape rather than a realistic outcome. Our page on what slot has the biggest max win puts it in context.

How often do Mental free spins trigger?

About once every 216 spins on average, according to the developer. That is an average over a very long run, not a schedule. Each spin is independent, so roughly 37% of the time you'll go 216 spins without the feature, and around 10% of the time you'll go 500 spins. At 20p a spin, 500 spins is £100 staked. The stronger Lobotomy and Mental rounds are rarer still. Our page on how many spins until a bonus explains the probability.

What are the three Mental bonus rounds?

Mental has Autopsy, Lobotomy and Mental Free Spins. Three scorpions start Autopsy, where Fire Frames are sticky. Three scorpions plus a spider start Lobotomy, where a sticky spider transforms symbols every spin and the Dead multiplier carries over. Three scorpions and two spiders start Mental Free Spins, where spiders stay put and the Dead multiplier never falls. Lower rounds can upgrade. The help screen lists spin counts. Our free spins feature page explains how tiered rounds work.

What does xSplit do in Mental?

xSplit splits symbols to its left into two, adding positions and ways to win, and the xSplit symbols then become wilds. If one lands to the right of a scatter it can upgrade it to a super scatter. Working alongside xWays, which reveals a stack of matching symbols, it lifts the game well beyond its 108 base ways. Exact rules are in the help screen. Our split symbols page compares xSplit with similar mechanics from other studios.

Is Mental too volatile for a small budget?

For most small budgets, yes. Mental is rated extreme volatility, with free spins about 1 in 216 spins and a 34.19% hit rate that includes many returns smaller than the stake. A £20 budget at 20p gives 100 spins, and around 63% of the time that is not enough to see a feature. If you want a longer session from little money, choose a lower-volatility game. Our best slots for small budgets guide suggests how to match game and budget.

Can I play the Mental demo?

Yes, where a UK casino offers demos, as free demo play after age verification. The Gambling Commission has required age checks before free-to-play games since May 2019, and demo versions must use the same outcome rules as the real game. A demo is useful for learning the scorpion and spider triggers, but a short demo session says nothing reliable about what your next session will pay. See our demo age verification page for the rule.

Can you buy the bonus in Mental in the UK?

No. Nolimit City lists a feature buy for Mental in some markets, but slots at UK-licensed casinos don't offer it, so British players reach the three bonus rounds only through ordinary spins. Stakes are also capped online at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. That keeps the cost of chasing a feature tied to normal play. Our bonus buy in the UK page explains how games are supplied here.

Who makes the Mental slot?

Mental is made by Nolimit City, a studio with its registered office in St Julian's, Malta, and teams in Sweden, Malta and India. Evolution agreed to buy it in June 2022. Nolimit City is known for its 'x' mechanics, including xWays, xNudge, xSplit and xBomb, and for very high ceilings, such as 300,000x on Tombstone RIP. The studio published Mental on 31 August 2021. Our Nolimit City provider page covers its main games and maths habits.

Is Mental 2 the same as Mental?

No. Mental 2 is a separate sequel with its own grid, features and maths, even though it reuses the hospital theme and Nolimit City's x-mechanics. Reference listings describe its xSplit symbol behaving a little differently from the original's. Never assume a sequel shares the original's RTP, volatility or max win; check each game's help screen. Our Mental 2 slot page covers the follow-up in detail, and the slot sequels guide explains what usually changes.
