Nudging wilds slots take a tall stack of wild symbols that stops only partly in view and slide it up or down until it covers the whole reel. The result is a full wild reel far more often than the reel strip alone would give, which is why the mechanic is so common in modern online slot design.
A nudging wild is a stacked wild that moves into full view after the reels stop.
On a 3-row reel with a 3-high stack, nudging turns five partly visible positions into a full wild reel instead of one.
Some versions add a multiplier per nudge (Nolimit City’s xNudge) or a free respin.
The game’s RTP already accounts for the nudge; it doesn’t add value on top.
The nudge is decided by the RNG, not by anything you press.

What nudging wilds slots are
A nudging wild is a stacked wild that doesn’t have to land perfectly. When a reel stops with only part of the stack in the window, the game slides the reel, one row at a time, until every position on that reel shows a wild. Some games then pay the spin; others give a respin with the wild reel held. Either way, the end state is a complete wild reel.
The feature is common in online slots of all styles, from simple five-reel video slots to the extreme-volatility games of studios such as Nolimit City, which brands its multiplier version as xNudge. On our features hub it sits between the classic wild mechanics and the reel-movement features.
Why nudging wilds matter: the reel-strip maths
The clearest way to see what a nudging wild does is to count stop positions on a reel strip. Imagine a reel strip of 40 stops with one stack of three wilds on it, shown through a window three rows high. These numbers are illustrative; real games use different strips and the RNG picks a stop, but the logic holds.

Without nudging, a full wild reel appears on 1 stop in 40 (2.5% of spins). With nudging, any of the five overlapping stops produces it: 5 in 40, or 12.5%. That is five times as many full wild reels from the same strip. Because the game’s total RTP is fixed, the designer pays for those extra wild reels elsewhere, usually with fewer wild stacks on the strip, lower symbol pays or a rarer bonus. The player sees more dramatic wild reels; the long-run return doesn’t change.
How a nudging wild plays out on screen
The visual sequence differs between studios, but the logic below applies to almost every nudging wild slot. The whole outcome is chosen by the random number generator before step one finishes.
Reels spin and stop on positions the RNG has already selected.
The game checks each reel for a wild stack that is partly visible.
Any such reel is moved up or down, one row at a time, until the stack fills it.
Extras apply if the game has them: a multiplier grows with each step, or a respin is awarded with the wild reel held.
Wins are calculated with the full wild reel substituting for every paying symbol it can replace.
Only the net result goes to your balance, and the UK rules stop a return equal to or smaller than the stake being celebrated as a win.
Types of nudging wild
Studios combine the basic nudge with other mechanics. The main versions are below.
Common nudging wild variants
Variant
What happens after the nudge
Effect on volatility
Plain nudge
Reel becomes fully wild; spin pays as normal
Small rise
Nudge with multiplier
Multiplier grows by a set amount per step (Nolimit City’s xNudge adds one per step)
Large rise
Nudge and respin
Wild reel is held and the other reels spin again
Moderate rise
Sticky nudging wild
Wild reel stays for later free spins
Large rise inside the bonus
Nudge and reveal
A mystery stack nudges into view, then turns into one matching symbol
Moderate to large rise
The last row describes the mystery stacks in Push Gaming’s Razor Returns (2023), listed in our facts as “Nudge & Reveal mystery stacks” alongside free spins with starting multipliers up to 25×. Strictly that is a mystery symbol rather than a wild, but it works on the same sliding principle.
Nudging wilds slots in our checked data
We only name a game where our verified facts confirm the feature. Two slots qualify:
El Paso Gunfight (Nolimit City, 2021): 96.06% RTP (lower versions exist), high volatility with an Extreme option, 44,440× max win. Its free spins add sticky xNudge wilds whose multiplier grows with each nudge.
Razor Returns (Push Gaming, 2023): 5 reels × 5 rows, 40 fixed paylines, high volatility and a 100,000× max win, built around Nudge & Reveal mystery stacks. Our facts hold no verified RTP for it, so check the help screen.
Plenty of other slots nudge wilds into place. If a game’s paytable mentions a “nudge”, “slide” or “fill the reel” wild, it is a variant of this mechanic, and the help screen is the authority on the details.
What a nudging wild slot costs at UK stakes
Nudging wilds don’t change cost; stake and RTP do. Using El Paso Gunfight’s listed 96.06% RTP as the example, the long-run average loss is 3.94% of everything staked. Remember that this average is reached only over a huge number of spins and that a short session can go either way, usually down.

Nudging on a pub fruit machine
British players met nudges long before online slots. On a pub fruit machine the machine may award a number of nudges, and you choose which reel to move down a step. Using an offered nudge well can avoid missing a win the machine has offered, but it doesn’t beat the payout percentage built into the machine. The online nudging wild removes the choice entirely and moves only wild symbols.
Pub machines are usually Category C, limited to a £1 stake and a £100 top prize; our page on nudges and the guide on how to use nudges cover the land-based version in depth.
Myths about nudging wilds
“A half-visible wild means a big win is close.” It means nothing about the next spin. Each result is independent, and a part-wild reel that misses is a near miss, not a signal.
“Raising the stake makes nudges more frequent.” In a standard nudging wild game, stake scales wins but leaves the reel strips unchanged. If a game’s rules say otherwise, the help screen will state it.
“Nudging wilds raise RTP.” The RTP printed in the help screen already includes them.
UK rules for nudging wild slots
Since 31 October 2021, online slots in Great Britain must run without autoplay, take at least 2.5 seconds per spin, drop turbo and slam-stop features, and avoid celebrating a return equal to or smaller than the stake. Those changes are summarised in the Commission’s summary of changes to the remote technical standards (opens in a new tab). A nudge animation must fit within the spin, so UK versions can feel slower than overseas videos.
Stakes are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. Bonus buy isn’t offered on slots at UK-licensed casinos. Our slot game design rules page and the losses disguised as wins rule go into detail.
Who nudging wilds slots suit
Advantages
More frequent full wild reels than a plain stacked wild on the same strip.
Easy to follow: the reel visibly fills before wins are counted.
Plain nudge versions keep volatility moderate.
Drawbacks
Multiplier versions can be very volatile, with long dry spells.
The drama of a sliding reel can make a small return feel bigger than it is.
Exact rules vary between studios, so you need to read each help screen.

Frequently asked questions
What are nudging wilds in slots?
Nudging wilds are stacked wild symbols that slide into full view after the reels stop. If only part of the stack lands in the window, the game moves the reel one row at a time until the whole reel is wild, then counts wins. Some games add a multiplier or a respin. The feature is a twist on the stacked wild, and it exists to turn near-misses on the reel strip into full wild reels more often.
How do nudging wilds affect my chances of winning?
They make full wild reels more frequent, but they don’t improve the game’s overall return. With a three-high stack on a three-row reel, nudging turns five possible stop positions into a full wild reel instead of one. The designer balances that elsewhere, so the published RTP is unchanged. Your long-run expected loss stays the same; the pattern of wins changes. The RTP guide explains why a feature never adds return on its own.
Can I control when a wild nudges?
No. In online slots the nudge is automatic and the result, including how far the wild moves, is fixed by the random number generator before the reels finish spinning. There is no button to influence it, and UK slots have had no slam-stop since October 2021. That is different from pub fruit machines, where you choose how to use nudges the machine offers. Read can you stop a slot spin early for more.
What is the difference between a nudging wild and an expanding wild?
A nudging wild needs a stack already on the reel strip and physically slides it into view. An expanding wild is a single wild symbol that grows to fill its reel instantly, wherever it lands. Both end with a full wild reel, but they come from different reel designs and appear at different rates. Expanding wilds are best known from book slots. The expanding wilds page covers the instant version.
Do nudging wilds have multipliers?
Some do. Nolimit City’s xNudge wild adds one to its multiplier for every step it moves, so a wild that slides three rows carries a larger multiplier than one that slides one. Many other nudging wilds have no multiplier at all and simply fill the reel. A few games give a respin instead. The help screen of each slot spells out which version you have. Our xNudge guide explains the multiplier version with a worked example.
Which slots have nudging wilds?
In our verified data, El Paso Gunfight from Nolimit City has sticky xNudge wilds in its free spins, and Push Gaming’s Razor Returns uses Nudge & Reveal mystery stacks that slide into view before revealing a symbol. Many other games use some form of nudging wild, but we only name those we can confirm. Check the paytable of any slot you open. The El Paso Gunfight guide gives that game’s full figures.
Are nudging wilds the same as fruit machine nudges?
They share a name and the idea of moving a reel one step, but they work differently. On a fruit machine you choose which reel to nudge when the machine offers nudges, and you can miss a win by choosing badly. On an online slot the nudge is automatic and only moves wild stacks. Neither beats the built-in payout percentage. The guide to fruit machine nudges covers the pub version.
Do nudging wilds make a slot more volatile?
A plain nudge raises volatility slightly, because more value comes through full wild reels and less through everyday small wins. Versions with a growing multiplier, sticky wilds or respins raise it much more, since a few rare spins carry a large share of the return. Expect longer runs without wins on those games and size your stake accordingly. The slot volatility guide explains how to match volatility to your budget.
Why does the game sometimes nudge but still pay less than my stake?
A full wild reel only pays if it joins matching symbols on other reels, and the combination may be a low-paying one. A nudge can therefore return less than you staked. UK rules since October 2021 stop games celebrating a return equal to or below the stake, and your net position must be on screen, so you can see whether you actually won. Our page on losses disguised as wins explains the rule.
Can I try nudging wild slots for free?
Yes, many casinos offer free demo play, after age verification, which UK rules have required since May 2019. Demos run the same maths as the real game, so you can watch how often wild stacks land partly visible and how the nudge plays out. You can’t win money in a demo, and some demos run a different RTP version from the one a casino uses for real play. Our demo slots guide explains what to look for.
