Number reels slots use a reel, wheel or strip of numbers instead of pictures to decide how much of something you get: nudges, steps on a feature trail, free spins, a multiplier or a cash value. The numbers look evenly spread, but they rarely are, and the weighting behind them sets the true average value of the feature.

What number reels slots are
Most reels carry symbols that pay when they line up. A number reel works differently: the value it stops on is used as an input to something else. Land a 4 and you might move four steps along a trail, get four nudges, receive four free spins or have a win multiplied by four. The reel is a counter dressed up as a spinning drum.
On UK fruit machines number reels are part of the furniture. They sit on the top glass, beside the main reels or within a feature, and they feed the feature trail that climbs towards cash prizes. Online, the same idea appears as number wheels in bonuses, multiplier reels on classic three-reel games and the number reel in Slingo. This page is part of our slot features hub, which lists the other mechanics mentioned here.
Don't confuse number reels with reel modifiers such as Megaways, where the number of symbols on each reel changes every spin. That mechanic changes the grid; a number reel sets the size of a reward.
How a number reel works, step by step
A trigger starts the number feature, for example a special symbol on the main reels or reaching a set point on a trail.
The random number generator picks a stop on the number reel. On a cabinet, the machine's controller makes the choice.
The stop is mapped to a value. Because the reel strip can repeat values, some numbers have many stops and others only one.
The value is applied: you receive that many nudges, move that many steps, or see the win multiplied.
If the feature allows more than one number spin, the process repeats with a fresh, independent selection each time.
Every part of that sequence is set out in the game rules or on the machine's information screen. Where a feature asks you to press a button to stop the numbers, the stop decides only when you see the value, not what it is. Our page on skill stop slots explains why.
The maths behind number reels: weighting explained
A reel that shows the numbers 1 to 6 looks like a die, where each number turns up one time in six. Number reels almost never work like that. Designers repeat the low numbers on the strip, or on the virtual reel behind it, so that high numbers are rare. The table below is an illustrative 32-stop number reel, not taken from any real machine.

The average result is about 2.53, well below the 3.5 you would expect from a fair die, and a 6 lands only about once in 32 spins. That gap between how a reel looks and how it behaves is exactly the effect described on our weighted reels page. The weighting is legitimate and is built into the game's published return; it simply means the value you should expect is closer to the bottom of the range than the top.
Chaining number spins makes the gap wider. Two independent spins of the reel above average about 5.06 in total, but the chance of two 6s in a row is about 0.1%, or roughly 1 in 1,024.

Online, the free spin count and the multiplier are the most common uses. Some games use a wheel instead of a reel, which works the same way; see bonus wheel slots. A multiplier reel is the simplest case of a multiplier: it scales every win by its value, so the weighting of high multipliers drives the game's volatility.
Number reels on UK fruit machines and pub machines
On a pub fruit machine the number reel is often what moves you around the board. A typical design gives you a number spin whenever certain symbols land, then advances you that many steps along the trail, where squares can hold cash, extra nudges, a gamble or entry to a bonus. Wikipedia's overview of slot machines (opens in a new tab) notes that Category C fruit machines 'often have many extra features, trails and subgames with opportunities to win money'; number reels are one of the engines behind them.
Two things limit what a number reel can deliver on a machine. The first is the category: a pub's Category C machine takes £1 at most and pays £100 at most, whatever square the trail reaches. The second is the payout model. Many fruit machines are compensated, meaning the controller steers features towards a target percentage over time, so a number reel on such a machine may land differently depending on what the machine has recently paid. No player technique can read or beat that.

Slingo games merge a slot with a bingo card. A row of reels below a grid spins numbers instead of fruit, and any number that matches the card is marked off. Completing lines on the card climbs a prize ladder, and special symbols such as jokers let you mark a number of your choice. The reel is a pure number reel: it never pays on its own, it only feeds the card.
The maths works the same way as any other number reel. The game sets how often each number and special symbol appears, and the published RTP accounts for every combination. Choices about where to place a joker can affect a single game's result, so the help screen usually explains the best placement, but the overall return is set by the design. The headline 'up to 15 free spins' is true, but the average is under seven. The value column shows how many pounds' worth of spins you receive, not what they win: those spins still return less than their face value on average, and the bonus as a whole is priced into the base game. Our explanation of how free spins work on slot machines covers what happens next.
Number reel myths and facts
Advantages
Fact: each number spin is a fresh, independent selection on an RNG game.
Fact: high numbers are usually rarer than they look.
Fact: the published RTP already includes every possible number result.
Fact: a pub machine's number feature cannot pay above its category's prize cap.
Drawbacks
Myth: low numbers in a row mean a high number is due.
Myth: you can time the stop button to land a 6.
Myth: every number is equally likely because each appears on the reel.
Myth: number features online respond to how much you have lost.
Online number features are part of the slot, so the UK slot rules apply in full. Since 31 October 2021 there has been no autoplay, each game cycle must last at least 2.5 seconds, slam-stop and turbo are not allowed, and the game must not celebrate a return that is equal to or less than the stake. The most you can stake on one spin is £5 if you are 25 or older, a cap in force since 9 April 2025, or £2 if you are 18 to 24, since 21 May 2025. The RTP or likelihood of winning, and the rules of the number feature, must be available before you play.
On machines, the information requirements are different: Categories B and C must display a theoretical target return, and the Commission's draft standards require compensated games to say so. Our guide to reading a machine label explains what to look for.

Frequently asked questions
What is a number reel on a slot machine?
A number reel is a reel or wheel that shows numbers instead of symbols, and the number it stops on sets the size of something else: nudges, steps on a feature trail, free spins, a multiplier or a cash value. It does not pay by lining up like normal symbols. The value is chosen by the random number generator, or by the machine's controller on a cabinet. See the related feature trail and nudges pages for how numbers are used on fruit machines.
Are all numbers on a number reel equally likely?
Usually not. Designers repeat low numbers on the reel strip or the virtual reel behind it, so high numbers land far less often than their place on the display suggests. In our illustrative 32-stop reel, a 1 has ten stops and a 6 has one, so the 6 appears about once in 32 spins and the average result is 2.53. The help screen or rules explain the feature, but not always the weights. Read about weighted reels and reel strips.
Can I stop a number reel on the number I want?
No. On an RNG game the number is chosen when the feature starts, and pressing a stop button only ends the animation. On a fruit machine the controller makes the choice, sometimes with a compensated payout model, and again the button does not steer it. Timing tricks and patterns do not work. Our pages on whether stopping the reels is a skill and whether slot machines have patterns explain why in more depth.
What do the numbers on a pub fruit machine mean?
Numbers on a pub fruit machine usually tell you how many nudges you have, how many steps you move on the feature trail, or how much a feature square is worth. The machine's rules, available on the cabinet, set out what each number does. All of it sits within Category C limits for most pub machines: a £1 maximum stake and a £100 maximum prize, 18+ only. Our guides on how to play fruit machines and why fruit machines say hold explain the screens.
Is Slingo a number reels slot?
Yes, Slingo is the best-known online example. A row of reels spins numbers, and any that match a bingo-style card are marked off; completed lines climb a prize ladder. The reel never pays by itself, it only feeds the card, which is the definition of a number reel. Jokers let you choose which number to mark, which can affect a single game, but the overall return is set by the game design. Our Slingo slots page and the grid slot machines page explain the format.
Do number reels make a slot more volatile?
They can. If a number reel sets a multiplier or a free spin count, its rare high values create the occasional large result, while the common low values keep most features small. The heavier the weighting towards low numbers, and the larger the top value, the more volatile the feature. The RTP is unchanged by that spread; only the pattern of results changes. Read our volatility explainer and standard deviation for the maths.
Why does 'up to 15 free spins' usually mean fewer?
Because 'up to' describes the top value on a weighted number reel or wheel, not the average. In our illustrative example the reel offered 5, 7, 10 or 15 spins, but the low values were far more common and the average was under seven. The help screen often lists the possible counts; check it before assuming the maximum is typical. Our pages on what triggers a bonus round and how many spins until a bonus cover related questions.
Are number reels allowed on UK online slots?
Yes. Number reels are a normal game mechanic and are allowed, provided the slot follows the UK rules: no autoplay, at least 2.5 seconds per game cycle, no slam-stop, no celebrating returns that are equal to or smaller than the stake, and stake limits of £5 per spin (25 and over) or £2 (18 to 24). Results must be random and cannot be adjusted to hit a target return. See our UK slot machine rules and the online slot stake limits page.
What is the difference between a number reel and a multiplier?
A multiplier is one job a number reel can do. A multiplier reel shows values such as 2x, 3x or 5x and multiplies any win on that spin by the value it lands on. Other number reels set counts instead, such as nudges or free spins. Multipliers can also come from symbols, wilds or bonus meters with no reel at all. See our multipliers feature page and what a multiplier is in slots for every type.
