Stop button meaning in slots

The stop button meaning in slots is a control that halts the spinning reels early so the result appears sooner. It does not change the result: on modern machines and online games the outcome is chosen before the reels move. UK online slots have not been allowed a stop button, often called slam stop, since 31 October 2021, though many pub fruit machines still have one.

Key takeaways

  • A stop button only shortens the animation; the result is already fixed.
  • Slam stop has been banned on UK online slots since 31 October 2021 because it speeds up play.
  • Fruit machine skill stops look like timing tests but are controlled by the machine's software.
  • The stop that does make a difference is stopping play: time-outs, limits and GAMSTOP.

Stop button meaning in slots: what pressing stop does

On a machine or game with a stop button, pressing it while the reels turn makes them stop at once, or one by one, instead of running their full animation. The stopped reels show exactly the symbols they would have shown anyway. The button saves seconds, nothing more. Our slot glossary has the related entries slam stop and reel stop, the second being the position a reel lands on rather than a button.

The reason it cannot change anything is the order of events. The random number generator chooses all stop positions when the game starts; the reels then play out to those positions. By the time your finger reaches the stop button, the result is settled.

Why UK online slots have no stop button

The Gambling Commission's responsible product design standard (RTS 14E) (opens in a new tab) says a gambling system must not let a customer reduce the time until the result is presented. Its guidance names turbo, quick spin and slam stop as features that are not permitted, regardless of game speed. The change took effect on 31 October 2021 as part of the package summarised in the Commission's summary of changes to the technical standards (opens in a new tab).

The thinking is simple: a stop button lets a player complete more games per hour, and faster play means more money staked in the same time. Combined with the 2.5-second minimum and the autoplay ban, removing it keeps online slots to a steadier pace. Our page on the slot game design rules sets out the whole package.

Stop buttons and skill stops on fruit machines

UK pub machines have long had buttons under each reel labelled hold, nudge or stop. A skill stop invites you to stop a reel at the right moment, for example to land a symbol on the win line. It looks like a test of reflexes, but on modern machines the software decides where a reel can stop, sometimes allowing a short slip so the reel settles where the game intends. The machine still pays within its built-in percentage.

  1. The machine offers a skill stop or stop feature.
  2. Software sets which positions are reachable this time, based on its random or compensated logic.
  3. You press stop as the symbol approaches.
  4. The reel stops at the nearest permitted position, which may not be exactly where you pressed.
  5. Any win is paid from the result the machine allowed.

Older machines gave players more apparent control, which is where the reputation for skill comes from; our history of nudges and holds tells that story. For the general question, see is stopping the reels a skill and can you stop a slot spin early.

Changes are coming for machines too. The Commission's finalised gaming machine technical standards take effect on 30 June 2027; trade reports say new Category A, B and C machines must not offer features that shorten the time to the result, while existing machines are exempt.

Stop button myths

  • Stopping the reels early does not improve your odds. It only removes the animation.
  • A good sense of timing does not beat a fruit machine. The software decides which stops are possible.
  • Leaving the stop button alone does not make a win more likely either. See our slot machine myths guide.

Frequently asked questions

What does the stop button do on a slot machine?

It halts the spinning reels early so you see the result sooner. It does not change the result, which the machine or game chose when the spin started. On UK online slots, stop buttons have been banned since 31 October 2021 because they speed up play. Many fruit machines in pubs still have stop or skill-stop buttons. The explainer on how a slot machine decides who wins explains when and how the outcome is actually set.

Why was slam stop banned in the UK?

Because it let players finish each game faster, which increases how much can be staked per hour. From 31 October 2021 the Gambling Commission's technical standards have required that online gambling systems must not let customers shorten the time to the result, naming turbo, quick spin and slam stop. The same package banned autoplay and set a 2.5-second minimum per slot spin. The spin speed rule page explains how the minimum is measured.

Is a fruit machine skill stop really skill?

Not in a way that beats the machine. A skill stop asks you to press at the right time, but modern machines decide which stop positions are available and can let a reel slip to an allowed position. The game still pays within its built-in percentage, and on compensated machines it tracks a target return over time. Pressing well can avoid missing a win the machine has offered, nothing more. Our skill stop feature page explains the mechanism in more detail.

Can I stop the reels on an online slot?

Not on a UK-licensed online slot. Since 31 October 2021, slots offered to players in Great Britain cannot include slam stop, quick spin or turbo, and each spin must last at least 2.5 seconds. The rule does not apply inside bonus rounds where no extra stake is wagered, so some features may run faster. Games offered in other countries may look different. Our UK slot machine rules guide lists every design rule with its start date.

Will pub machines lose their stop buttons?

Existing machines can keep them. The Gambling Commission's finalised gaming machine technical standards take effect on 30 June 2027, and trade reports say new Category A, B and C machines must not have features that shorten the time to the result. Machines already in use are exempt, so stop buttons will fade out gradually as cabinets are replaced. Our pub slot machines page explains which machines pubs can have and what they may pay.

How do I stop playing slots if I want a break?

Use a time-out or deposit limit in your casino account, or self-exclude from all GB-licensed online gambling through GAMSTOP for six months to five years. For venues, ask about self-exclusion schemes that cover arcades, betting shops and bingo halls in your area. The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, is free on 0808 8020 133 at any time. The guide to help for slot players lists every service with what it offers.
