In slots, substitute meaning is simple: a substitute is a symbol, almost always the wild, that stands in for another symbol to complete a winning line or way. The help screen usually says it ‘substitutes for all symbols except’ a short list, and that exception list matters as much as the wild itself.
A substitute counts as whichever symbol makes the best win on that line or way.
Scatters, bonus symbols and jackpot or money symbols are usually excluded.
Only the highest win per line is normally paid, so a wild can’t be counted twice.
Substitution is built into the RTP; it doesn’t make a win more likely than the maths allows.

What substitute means in slots
A substitute is any symbol that a game’s rules allow to count as a different symbol when wins are worked out. On nearly every modern video slot that job belongs to the wild symbol, which is why the two words are used almost interchangeably. Rules screens tend to phrase it as ‘WILD substitutes for all symbols except SCATTER’, and reviewers shorten it to ‘subs for everything but the bonus’.
The idea is old. Early machines didn’t have wilds at all: a win needed the real symbol on every reel, as described in our history of the fruit machine. Joker-style substitutes arrived as games moved to video screens and software, because a symbol that fills gaps lets designers pay more small wins without changing the way the reels and symbols are laid out.
Substitution is a counting rule, not a bonus. The random number generator has already chosen where each reel lands before the substitute is applied; the game then reads the visible grid and treats the wild as whatever gives the line its best value.
How a substitute symbol works on a payline
The evaluation order is the same in most games. Once the reels stop, the software checks each payway or line from left to right, and wherever a wild sits it tries the symbol that produces the highest prize.
The RNG picks a stop position for every reel and the grid is drawn.
The game reads each payline (or each way, on a 243-ways or Megaways slot) from the leftmost reel.
Where a wild appears, the software treats it as the symbol that gives that line its highest paytable value.
It compares that substituted win with any win made by the wilds alone, if wilds have their own pay row.
Only the highest single win on each line is paid, then all line wins are added together.
That fourth step is the one players miss. If a line reads wild, wild, wild, king, ten, the game might pay either three wilds or four kings, but not both. The help screen’s line ‘only the highest win per line is paid’ is the clause that settles it.
Substitute meaning in slots: a worked example in pounds
Take an illustrative 5-reel, 10-line game played at £1 a spin, so each line carries 10p (the line bet). The paytable below is invented for the example; real figures sit in the game’s paytable.

In the second row the rules pay three wilds because 25× is better than four kings at 10×. In the third, the wild fills a queen gap, but the scatter on reel 4 breaks the run because it can’t be substituted. Across all ten lines the totals add up, and the result is compared with the £1 stake: a total of 40p would be a net loss of 60p, which UK games must not celebrate as a win under the Gambling Commission’s 2021 game design rules (opens in a new tab).
What a substitute can’t replace
Exclusions exist to protect the game’s feature maths. If a wild could stand in for the scatter symbol, free spins would trigger far more often than the designer intended, so the exclusion list is long in feature-heavy games.
Scatters and bonus symbols. Usually excluded, because they start bonus rounds.
Money, cash or coin symbols. Collect-style games keep these separate from line wins.
Jackpot symbols. A wild rarely counts towards a jackpot set.
Other wilds with special rules. A multiplier wild may not combine with another multiplier in some games.
There is one well-known exception. In book-style games such as Book of Dead a single book symbol acts as both wild and scatter, so the substitute and the trigger are the same icon. The book symbol page covers how that dual role works.
Types of substitute symbol in online slots
The basic rule stays the same while the delivery changes. Common variants include expanding wilds that grow to cover a reel (Starburst’s best-known trick), sticky wilds that stay put for several spins, stacked wilds, and multiplier wilds that substitute and also multiply the line win. Some games use mystery symbols that all turn into the same random symbol, which works like a substitute decided after the stop.
Each version changes volatility. A plain wild spreads small wins around; a multiplier wild concentrates value into rarer, larger hits. Neither changes the long-run RTP printed in the rules, because the substitute was included when that figure was calculated.
Almost every slot in a UK casino lobby uses a substituting wild, so the term applies wherever you play. Coral Casino’s welcome deal for new players (18+) gives 100 free spins after you deposit and bet £10 or more on slots; the spins are 10p each on selected games, must be accepted within 48 hours and last 7 days, winnings carry no wagering, and some payment methods such as PayPal and Skrill don’t qualify. Ladbrokes Casino offers new customers (18+) up to 500 free spins at 10p, delivered as 50 a day for 10 days after a £10 slots spend, with no wagering and the same kind of payment exclusions. Both are run by LC International (Entain), so check the terms before opening a second account; game availability changes, so search each casino’s lobby.
Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open a new account with another; check the terms before signing up.

Frequently asked questions
What does ‘substitutes for all symbols’ mean on a slot?
It means the wild can count as any regular paying symbol to complete a win. In practice the phrase almost always continues with ‘except’, and the symbols after that word, usually scatters, bonus icons and money symbols, can’t be replaced. The game reads each line, tries the wild as every allowed symbol and pays the best result. Our wild symbols guide shows the common wild types, and the glossary explains the other rule words you’ll see beside it.
Is a substitute the same as a wild?
Usually yes, because the wild is the symbol that does the substituting. Strictly, ‘substitute’ describes the action and ‘wild’ names the symbol. A few games give substitution powers to other icons too, such as mystery symbols that all transform into one random symbol, or book symbols that act as wild and scatter at once. If you’re unsure which icons substitute, the paytable and rules screen list them, and the book symbol page covers the dual-role case.
Can a wild substitute for a scatter?
In most slots it can’t. Scatters trigger free spins or bonus games, and letting a wild stand in would push the trigger rate above what the game’s maths assumes, so designers exclude them. The rules will say ‘except scatter’ or similar. Book-style games are the main exception, because one symbol carries both jobs. Read more on scatter symbols and on what triggers a bonus round, which explains why trigger symbols are protected.
Does a substitute make a slot pay more often?
It makes wins more frequent than they would be with the same reels and no wild, but that effect is already inside the published RTP. The designer sets symbol weights with the wild included, so the long-run return is unchanged whether you notice the wild or not. Every spin is still independent and losses remain likely over time. See how RTP works and our hit frequency explainer for how often small wins land.
Why did my wild not pay with the symbols next to it?
The usual reason is that the run was broken before the wild could help. Wins on line games start from the leftmost reel, so a wild on reel 3 needs matching symbols on reels 1 and 2. Another common cause is that the neighbouring symbol was a scatter, money or bonus icon the wild can’t replace. Check the line in the history or rules screen. Our pages on paylines and the win line show how runs are counted.
Do wild multipliers apply when the wild substitutes?
Yes, that’s usually the point of them: a multiplier wild substitutes for a symbol and multiplies the line win it helps form. Rules differ when two or more multiplier wilds sit on one line; some games add the multipliers together, others multiply them, and a few cap them. The help screen states which. Our wild multipliers page explains the variants, and the multipliers guide covers multipliers outside of wilds.
Do UK fruit machines use substitutes?
Substitutes are far less central there, because pub and arcade fruit machines are built around holds, nudges and feature trails rather than wilds. If a particular machine does use one, the machine’s on-screen or printed rules describe it, and the machine still works to its theoretical payout percentage whatever symbols appear. Category C machines in pubs carry a £1 maximum stake and £100 top prize. See how fruit machine nudges work and our Category C entry for the limits.
